Machka sorry to hear about your knee. Are you on crutches? Are you taking the bus? How are you managing to care for your household? It does sound overwhelming. Take care!

I hadn't been wearing the Powerstep in my right shoe, but I'm going to. I put them in tonight.

I think I replied: Hoka trail running shoes.
I also walk using relatively inexpensive men's hiking shoes from one of our department stores. I get them in a men's size 7 which is a little bit big for me, then I put my orthotics in them.

Meanwhile, on Friday as the dust of the week began to settle, I did manage to find two pair of dress shoes which I think will do.Machka those spicy sweet teas look yummy, especially the chili and chocolate. Is it the rooibos that makes it taste sweet without sugar/honey/stevia etc?
Barbara
Yes.
Actually, once you get away from real tea (black, green), often the other "teas" are a little bit sweeter.
For example lemon ginger is not too bitter either.
But rooibos is sweetish and is especially nice with the orange and cinnamon and a few other flavours, rather than just on its own.Anniesquats100 wrote: »A. I somehow convinced myself that I should serve the kiwi I bought so it wouldn't go bad. So then I ate a bit, which wasn't too bad.

Kiwi is low cal ... it's a good fruit to eat when limiting calories.

I'll eat a couple of them each day during their season.

Barbiecat: Barbie, what a beautiful car! Love the name for it, too, it fits with that color.
dlfk202000: Debbie, I jumped on this train while it was still moving, so I don't know the background of the situation, but I hope things work out with watching Ezie--it looks like you know what you want to do!
Took the dog out for 3.5 walk/run with mostly walking at this point. Oof, soo muggy today! Saw ALL the dogs out there getting the walks in before it gets too hot, lol. Hope you have/had a beautiful Saturday!

As I thought it was just a bruise, I remained active for the first couple weeks but I began to notice that it was hurting worse which didn't make sense. My elbow with a deep bone bruise was getting better but my leg, with just an ordinary bruise (I thought), was getting worse. So last weekend, I cycled 50 km on Friday then rested it for the rest of the weekend but when I used it on Monday, it was really sore and got worse throughout the week.
Most of the bruising on the right side of my knee is gone, but there's a long, narrow, kind of rectangular lump that is extremely painful. I can't even brush it with a fingertip without a lot of pain. That lump is still quite blue and the area around it is swollen.
I couldn't get in to see anyone till Friday because of how busy and stressful this past week was ... just no time. I've been hobbling around and I cut way back on my stair climbing and walking. Monday I wore little boots with low-ish heels but felt oddly wobbly in them ... the rest of the week I was into flat walking shoes because I didn't feel stable in anything else.
When the nurse practitioner (NP) checked it late on Friday, she immediately suggested torn MCL. If it were just a bruise, it would be mostly healed by now. So this weekend I'm wearing a knee brace and keeping my leg up most of the time. I've got a cane to help me around.
We'll see what happens next week with the scans (X-ray, MRI, etc.). The NP thought I might be in to see an orthopaedic surgeon shortly, but I don't know if it is that bad.

Barbara, congrats on the weight loss milestone.
Tracie, the first time I retired I found that I wasn’t quite ready to give up on my career and found a part-time job utilizing my degree. The second time I retired, I found a volunteer position that gives my life purpose but still plenty of free time. My husband, bless his heart, decided to take up walking when he realized he was looking too forward to Gunsmoke every day. He set a boundary of no daytime tv and now walks 20-25,000 steps a day at 77. I cannot hang with him. I try to join him for an hour. That is my limit.
Barbie, love the car. You and Jake are an inspiration to me in the simple way you live your life and go for your dreams.
I found another new item for me that I am loving - it is chicken & apple breakfast sausage links. Two links are 100 calories and 9 g of protein. Add a hard boiled egg, a piece of toast, and a little fruit and I have a 400 calorie breakfast that I really enjoy. Dave tried them, but thought they were too sweet for his liking. They make bigger ones that you could use in place of kielbasa for dinner. I probably won’t go there since Dave was not a fan, but I would love it stir fried with some cabbage.

Congratulations if you had weight loss this week!
Mine stayed the same because of reduced exercise and wonky eating.
Hoping next week will be better. Back to my usual eating pattern at least.

reading. slowly. strep going through my childcare families. Sore throat hit yesterday afternoon while I had a house full of kids. Needless to say, I had them all "rest" and had parents come and get the kids early. Sleeping/not sleeping all last night. Went to "bed" at 5pm and was up every hour. In between times I was having dreams that I was working, while sick. Ugh. I am exhausted. If the swollen glands don't get better, I will head into Urgent Care tomorrow... Can you believe it? Strep! In the summer!?
Hugs to all! The activities sound fantastic, the grands look healthy and happy! Welcome newbies!

Regarding shoes—I wear SASS shoes & they’ve been sturdy and comfortable. They’re great for long walks.
Machka—I hope your bruising is healing well & you can & go about your daily routine. Fingers crossed that you don’t need surgery. 🤞🏻

Machka, sorry about your knee
Debbie, I know you will inventory what is best for you and say NO to everything else
Katie, my mother was able to adjust her job to 75% to help her figure out what she wanted to do with retirement. When she finally retired, she was so busy she didn't know how she found time to work
Margaret, I thought I would want to substitute after I retired but one day back to help friends on the first day of school the next year convinced me of two things---first that I was talented working with children, and second, that I never wanted to do it again, ever.
Fitbee, I don't remember where you live, but I know for me that I learned quickly that the earlier I walked in the morning, the better.
Allie, my marriage to Jake for over 30 years has been mostly excellent, but I can't imagine trying to train a new man under any circumstances even if her were wealthy and healthy. I have enough friends to enjoy and enough money to hire people to do things I don't know how to do.

1. Take a small step to help overcome a problem or worry. I am working on helping my son through this tough time by being in contact with his case worker and tracking his location.
2. Adopt a growth mindset. Change “I can’t” into “I can’t…yet”. I try to never use those words. I follow Yoda’s ‘Do or not, there is no try”
3. Be willing to ask for help when you need it. I will. My back hurts today so will easily ask for help when I need it.
4. Find something to look forward to today. Missed posting this yesterday. So today I am looking forward to my therapy session.
5. Get the basics right: eat well, exercise and go to bed on time. Will do!
6. Pause, breathe, and feel your feet firmly on the ground. Will meditate today to help me do this.
7. Shift your mood by doing something you really enjoy. I really need to do this today. Did not do this. Had a bad day all around yesterday.
8. Avoid saying “must” or “should” to yourself today. I will try.
9. Put a problem in perspective by seeing the bigger picture. Trying to see my son’s decisions through his eyes.
10. Reach out to someone you trust and share your feelings with them. I did not do this.
12. Write you worries down and save them for a specific “worry time”. I will try to remember to do this. Write them in my journal.
13. Challenge negative thoughts. Find an alternative interpretation. I worked on this. I also learned a breathing technique to help.
14. Get outside and move to help clear your head. I do this every day, but the triple digit heat is preventing it.
15. Set yourself an achievable goal and take the first step. I have to think about this.16. Find fun ways to distract yourself from unhelpful thoughts.RVRita in NM
17. Use one of your strengths to overcome a challenge today.
18. Let go of the small stuff and focus on the things that matter.
19. If you can’t change it, change the way you think about it.
20. When things go wrong, pause and be kind to yourself.
21. Identify what helped you get through a tough time in your life.
22. Find 3 things you feel hopeful about and write them down.
23. Remember that all feelings and situations pass in time.
24. Choose to see something good about what has gone wrong.
25. Notice when you are being judge mental and be kind instead.
26. Catch yourself over-reacting and take a deep breath.
27. Write down 3 things you are grateful for (even if today was hard).
28. Think about what you can learn about a recent problem.
29. Be a realistic optimist. Focus on what could go right.,
30. Reach out to a friend, family member, or colleague for support.
31. Remember we all struggle at times. It’s part of being human.

Allie, I'm so glad that Miles seems to be adjusting well to his new daycare! Much nicer for you to just be Gramma! And you can be there for emergencies too, if you want to be that is!
Debbie, sounds like you and hubby would do well to cut ties with Ezie's family! I know that the step grampa had some mental health issues, is he okay now? Sounds like he's just back in the same toxic environment that got him in trouble to start with! Good call on not giving him any money!
Can't remember who was asking about what to do now that she's retired, but I'll put my two cents worth in. I retired just under a year ago. I had already been watching our granddaughter one day a week, and picking up our grandson after school on those days, so I upped that to two days and I started volunteering for an outfit that helps women get back on their feet. We are partnered with many different agencies who help women, whether they are escaping abusive relationships or if they are young and have just aged out of foster care and everyone in between! We collect household goods and the gals can come by and "shop" for what they need. All of our items are donated (except bed pillows, we buy new) and so everything is free. We've even started doing some furniture. I found out about them while I was still working, the storage facility that I worked at donated 4 large lockers for this group, so I was familiar with what happened there. It looked like fun, so when I retired, I started helping out. It's only a couple of hours two Saturdays a month, so doesn't cut into my "me" time much. I've just been helping out on donation days, but will start training to do the "shops" with the gals too. I'm looking forward to that. And I recently found out that our granddaughter will be going to preschool in Sept, so I will have more time.
Basically what I'm saying is one option is to look for a volunteer opportunity. Food banks and soup kitchens I think are often looking for help, if that's something that interests you.
Evelyn, Vancouver Island
We will see how things work out with Ezie's mom. She is the mom but her mom acts like the boss of everyone. If they don't want to do two days a week, and the days I pick, then that is ok.
DH has distanced himself even more from step grandpa. The mental health issues are not just one sided like we thought. He was diagnosed as having cleptomania (sp?) and was caught stealing from his work, that is why he planned on killing himself. He did get some therapy but stopped that. Of course, work would not take him back but they also didn't file criminal charges against him which was what he was afraid of. He filed for unemployment but got turned down, of course. He is barely looking for another job. Dh doesn't think he is taking this serious- he thinks he stole because he wanted to, not so much as he couldn't help himself. They haven't been as close as he was years ago- he never had time to spend with dh and dh is pretty self centered too. (believe as he does or you are wrong)
I love the idea of the place you volunteer at.
I have helped at the food program at my old church when I go to see mom. I love doing it and will be checking into the local one to see if I can help there. They do it during the week so right now I can't but when I don't have Ezie on Wed, I can help,if they need it.
I would love to find something dh and I could do together. Need to figure things out with him. Can't imagine another 20 or so years going the way the past almost 30 yrs have been.
I need to do more things for myself too. Will continue Zumba and maybe go to a morning class or take some other class. A classmate from Zumba does quilting and I would love to do that. His quilts are amazing- won't get that fancy but I do love to sew.
Debbie

Yesterday was no fun & I wound up in my apartment because of a yucky nose & throat. I am doing fine today—👍🏻 😊
I inherited a weather device from my grandfather many years ago & it is remarkably accurate for temperature, barometer & humidity. I can confirm that humidity here in Illinois is much higher than in the Willamette Valley where I grew up.

Speaking up and saying no, or making my wishes known on any level is something brand new for me.
If Ezie's mom hadn't brought it up yesterday of what her mom wants her to do, I would have still been waiting to tell her about what my plans were, pushing it off another month.
I have either taught preschool or did daycare for the past 42 yrs so totally stopping is going to be a bit strange at first but if it happens now, I am ok with it. I may just take some time off and after the first of the year, look for another family but then again, by then, I might be liking this total retirement too much and not want it,even if it does mean loosing the write offs and extra income.4 -
Machka - we missed you. Bummer about that knee. Since I put the Powerstep inserts in my shoes, my knees are a little grouchy but I know it's arthritis in my left knee and my gait is a teeny bit different. It doesn't take much. The one I fell on a couple weeks ago is a little stiff, I think just bruised tendon, but dang it, it just takes so much longer to heal.
Tracey - I don't have a clue what the drums will sell for and am tossing it out to fate. So I don't have a number. Many of them were antique snare drums that DH was in the process of restoring, plus he had shelves of drum heads, those rings to hold them in place, many spare parts and tools, so much more than just a drum a person could purchase and start playing. It will take a person with special interest to purchase these items. The kid who picked them up yesterday seemed to think they'd be popular, we'll see. If not, at least they are out of my hair.
Lisa - I remember the feeling getting the mortgage paid off. Good for you and Corey! Because of DH's iffy health, I made it a priority to get the house and car/s paid off as soon as possible. I think it was Dave Ramsey and others who said a person shouldn't go into retirement with a lot of debt. There's a couple my age (early 70's) down the street with a mortgage, a little boat, and an RV (both of which are always requiring expensive fixing). When I talked to the wife a while ago, she said they were considering a reverse mortgage to make ends meet. This was when DH was still alive and I was so grateful we weren't in that situation.
Margaret - I love your retirement story and especially "No" being a valuable word. "The world comes to me". Brilliant.
On living alone:I was up at 4 am this morning, read my email and other messages, checked out this group, fed the dog and the cat, put the feed out for the chickies, put on my shoes. Got in a mile walk and was back at my house at 5:15 where I grabbed a container and went across the street to Roger's house and picked blueberries. Then I watered some of my container garden, pulled dandelions and tossed them in the pen for the chickens, went into the shop, moved a few boxes and looked at all the space I now have in there. The planning has started - I don't just want to slap things on shelves without doing it purposefully this time. What items to keep, what to donate, what to discard.
Came back in the house at around 7, made Kodiak power waffles. And thought about how wonderful it was to be totally in charge of my time. And back to Margaret's "No" - not feel guilty because I'm not available to others who want to chat or visit at a time that's convenient for THEM. Selfish? Perhaps. After decades of being on someone else's schedule - work, classes, hobbies and projects done with other folks- I love being accountable to only me, the dog, the cat and the chickens.
I get to eat the food I like, sit in the chair I want, watch or don't watch TV. Spend time in town shopping for an hour or three if I want. Can dress like a slob in DH's recycled sweats if I want. Or go to town shopping well-dressed without anyone wondering what I'm up to, lol. Doing what I want when I feel like it. No one will question what I'm up to, which is nothing in particular 99% of the time. Gosh, that sounds like a teenager who just moved out of their parent's house, doesn't it?
I may change my mind about all this in a few weeks, months, or years.
Barbie - another thrilling thing about your new car is not only the gas savings, but a great learning opportunity. Sounds like there are bells and whistles to investigate. Fun things to figure out. A fabulous means of brain stimulation for you and Jake, I know you've been planning this for a while getting the plug wired in. I read recently that anticipation is the key to happiness. When we no longer have something to look forward to, we start to fade.
Deep thought: What's the opposite of anticipation? Dread? Is dread a form of anticipation? A topic for another day. Some marbles to roll around in my head while I'm looking at those shelves in the shop.
Make it a wonderful weekend, ladies!

Barbara – I would be scared with no driver’s mirror, too. I depend so much on my mirrors. I don’t use my backup camera much. I know some people really rely on them. I do like it, tho, when I have to parallel park (which I hate to do). When do you get the replacement?
Jerry said he got another job (in add’n to BK). I do have to say that I think he has at least cut back on his drinking, he hasn’t come to work drunk in a while. I guess we shall see…..
Ginny – yea for the mammo. Hope the other tests go as well.
Worked then went to the farmer’s market to pick up the corn. In a sense, I wish it hadn’t come in today, just one more thing for me to do. Went to the bank yesterday to get money to pay for it. Now getting ready for the party.
Terri – when I guess I was in my 30’s, one time FIL (who was retired) commented “I don’t know where I ever found time to work.” At the time I thought “yea, sure”. Now I know what he meant! Thank goodness for my calendar!
Lisa – good luck Tuesday
M – sorry about the knee

Machka - That is so annoying about the knee. Just when you had got into a great routine. Life sends us lessons!! I hope it clears up quickly. With my wrist, I don't think people realise just how all encompassing it is. It affects so much more than the one body part. Everything is connected. Including our mental state.
Sending best wishes.

Belated welcome @Latitude27N Diana on the Island and @SylviaGamboa! Lots of inspiration, motivation and compassionate wisdom here. Baby steps are the way to start, that and logging every bite, lick and sip ;} It’s a real eye-opener.
Lisa Con VERY gratulations on paying off the mortgage. Well done! We are on track to pay ours off in 8 years, when the 10 year annuity that covers the mortgage payment runs out ;} Are you able to grow your own ginger? Thanks for the Sister Boniface suggestion. Thankful the cardo visit was so hopeful, fingers X’d the dosage fix really does help.
Carol it’s grat you don’t abuse your credit, but does your bank issue a visa or mastercard credit card that is not a debit card? You could build your credit by using it and paying it off each month AND there are protections from fraud loss that your debit card does not give you.
Beth scary Thursday indeed. Happy for the no-migraine-silver-lining, hope the tests point to a quick and easy fix.
Annie and Michele, I have such a strong emotional reaction against underwire bras, I’d have been tempted to burn them… and stomp on the ashes!
Margaret well done on setting that boundary and offering an alternatve.
Lanette BEFORE I get out of bed, I do ankle circles, flex and point, and write the alphabet with my toes. Otherwise when I stepped out of bed I’d just want to fall back in. ;} the chickens as instant composters of kitchen waste
Barbie your bucket in the shower is what we did in California during droughts (all the time) and sometimes here in August/September. When drought was severe, the “Pinot poudou” sign went up on the toilet
Rita ((hugs)) Does it cool down at night? Prayers continue for your son.
Katla hummingbird, fireworks AND a garden stroll? So happy for youi. Thank you for sharing.
Tracey “medium girl” Michaela sure has a way with words.
Kira in AB July 10 (I’m sooo far behind) was an awesome activity day. Well done!
Rosemarie well done on the decluttering. Sleep all you want, you are recovering from long time caregiving.
Vicki OWW! Glad your chiro could get you in on an emergency basis. Good lookin’ family!

Hello ladies!
I tried the Gym Boss timer today with my bike. Excellent! I did five minutes of cruise speed followed by a twenty second sprint, four times, plus a five minute cool down. I was panting and sweaty, but not scared. The bike takes my pulse every ten seconds or so, so I keep an eye on that. And the timer is simple to set up, partly because it comes with good instructions. I'm calling it twenty seven minutes of leisurely riding as far as the calories on MFP.
Other than that, I bought Teddy some special dog food, which he really enjoyed. He earned coupons for his $$$ vet visit. I'm normally not much of a coupon person, but this was fifteen bucks off.
And I had a NSV today. My aunt brought homemade chocolate chip cookies and I passed. I decided I like my own chocolate better at 80 calories vs twice that for a cookie. And I never eat just one.
Have a great day, my friends!

I'll just have to burn down the drive on it to make up for the mortgage burning. (Geek joke. )
Heather - Your London trip sounds both wonderful and utterly exhausting!
I feel as if I should accomplish something, but my headspace is all taken up by the dread of the colonoscopy prep beginning tomorrow and the procedure itself on Tuesday. I'm getting myself too worked up over it, I know. I just need to relax and get my mind off it, but the thought of two days with only clear liquids is seriously making me twitchy. Later, y'all,
Lisa in AR, trying to get over myself and quit whining...
Hey Lisa, my last colonoscopy I fasted prior just so I wouldn't be dealing with so much. The day prior to drinking the prep mix I fasted. Water only. By the afternoon of the next day I was drinking the prep. Use that "green tinned bag balm" for your nether region, as a barrier for what is coming out during the night. Believe me, its strong stuff and you get painfully sore. In your 23rd hour of fasting you can get really amped up, like gitty! You can feel really cold too. Your body's energy is going into the vital stuff so feet and hands can become really cold. I took a hot shower the night before my procedure. By the time I got out of recovery, I was like 42 hrs fasted. Remember it takes a while for your digestive system to click on. Eat small amounts and realize it takes time. It took maybe 4 days to have a bowel movement afterwards. All in all a good experience. You got this.

Oops the response posted twice oh well.
Yesterday husband brought flowers home for me, just because. He's a keeper.🤗💖
Today I bought kitchen things for my pen pal that's getting her first apartment. She's like 21 yrs old and calls me Auntie Rebecca. Bought her two bright yellow placemats, two pretty plates, 4 napkins, 2 colorful kitchen towels, drying mat, and have donated to her flatware for 8. I need to buy those boxes, "if it fits it ships" because with all that flatware it will be heavy. It was fun shopping for all that.😁
Then I checked out two library books:
"Breaking Up with Sugar" by Molly Carmel
Firefly cookbook. Recipes by the characters in the series "Firefly"😁
My dear husband just said, " why do you need a book to tell you to give up sugar"? "Do like I did and just don't have it". I said, " because I am not as disciplined as you, and I need help". "You though, just stop and that's that". (Then I think I used the word for donkey butt). 😂😂🙃
Men and their diss association with food and emotions. For many of us food and memories are intertwined. I can eat strawberry shortcake and think of summer, then canning, the scent of Ban De Sollie sun oil in its orange tube of heaven (No SPF to speak of though), then homemade root beer floats after hay season. Sadly foods and memories go hand in hand with me.

Good evening ladies!
Today I ate 1193 calories, which is one yogurt over my target. A reasonable choice, after I was hungry for thirty minutes. Earlier I rode my bike for twenty seven minutes, then tonight I did my dumbbell routine. Yay! My deficit is 386, again reasonable.
I might have to rethink my cycling intervals if they make me too hungry. Hmm. Always a balance.

Today I am going to try to figure out where I left off, just over a week ago, before things got so hectic!
For those that don't know, I work a 9-day fortnight and last week was one of my 5-day weeks.
I had meetings piled on meetings, work to do in the evenings, heaps of decisions to make, stuff to figure out, appointments to attend with my husband ... it was a full on week!
I knew something wasn't right with my knee, but it wasn't till Friday that I was able to do something about it.
Today, I have nothing I have to do, so I'll try to find my head and reattach it.
In the middle of all that I was able to complete the bowel screen test my doctor has been strongly encouraging me to do. In Australia, we do an at-home bowel screen test. If nothing shows up, then we're good for 2 years. If something shows up, then we go for a colonoscopy or something. So far, I've never had a colonoscopy.

No ... my skin doctor is away till October. I'll get it done then. I haven't noticed anything suspicious.
