Ginny- we felt bad for the baby possum. He has been hanging around her since he was very tiny, all alone. He is still small, less than 1/2 the size of a rabbit at most/just bigger than a full grown rat.
They are not distructive like rats and coons so we leave it alone. We just don't want it trapped in the garage, climbing on dh's 3D printers.
Lisa- I agree, they are not the cutest when full grown but the little ones are pretty cute.2 -
Nothing special today. Went in the pool (another tube of sunscreen bites the dust), went to WalMart since Vince needed bananas and milk, went for a walk to Dollar General (they didn’t have what I was looking for), then went in the pool to cool off. That felt so good since I get sweaty on my walk.
We had another skunk in the skimmer. Oh joy, thank goodness the garbage can is outside….
Tomorrow is back to the soup kitchen. Then I’ll go to the Humane Society’s thrift store to donate a home theater system, hand embroidered pillowcases, and a CD radio.
Young kids...when I got to work today in the back room someone had spilled their drink. How hard is it to clean up after yourself? Well, these are young, immature kids who are working (at least some of them are)

Speaking of possums, I walked my dog at 3AM last night and was surprised it was still 75 degrees out! While walking, we came faced-to-face with a raccoon. My dog went bonkers and the raccoon ran away and fell in the water in the canal beside us. It came back up looking pathetic all wet, looked at us, looked at the water, then scampered away on the edge of the water. It was funny at 3 AM!
RVRita in SE NM where it is hotter than hell in the daytime!
the raccoons we have here are really bold-they actually stand up to me. They are around because of the cat food. One time, one tried to grab the plastic container of food and run off with it. He wanted to run but wanted to take the container with him too- couldn't decide what he wanted more. He finally dropped it and took off. For a while they were living under the deck. We had to put chicken wire on the whole catio instead of just screen because the coons ripped a huge whole in it. I was just about ready to fall asleep when I looked over at the bedroom window, just less than 2 feet from my head, and there was a coon, poking his nose in. He was in there after the cat food. The catio is off our bedroom window and our window is always open. Another time they ripped the latch off the side door to it. Cats got out both times and I had to spend two days catching them and then repairing the damage.
They are very distructive

I have the same issue although he never went for therapy. He has a short temper and gets depressed easier than I do.

mine went I think once, maybe twice. I wish he would go back.
Oh, the short temper!!!
Today, he was talking in the kitchen, not far from where I was. He always talks very loud and I have asked him many times to talk a little quieter. It is terrible in a car. I kind of shushed him and he got PISSED, walked out and then wouldn't talk to me at all for quite a while, even when we were driving over to his mom's so I could walk her dog while he took care of her.
He is a total pessimist about every single thing in life.3 -

I was also raised with animals as utilitarian parts of living and survival (dogs and cats, too). And pretty much feel the same about chickens as you do. For the squeamish, look away!We honestly had bacon wrapped up in the freezer with names written on them from the contributing pig. They were all named after my mother's female relatives, Flossie, Lorraine and Belle--my father's sense of humor tended toward the macabre.
We kids also raised a calf each to full grown, sold a couple and a couple were processed by Mr. Penny down the road, the meat manager at the Piggly Wiggly in town, and they added to the freezer as well. It was a different life. I don't think I'd mind too much having to ask a chicken to give their all, named or not. More like a really nice gift from a friend.

Growing up, we raised all of our own meat and veggies. We rarely named the animals except for the ones we were going to show and sell at auction at the fair for FFA-
We knew certain animals were safe- My rabbit, Butterscotch but her little ones were meat rabbits for us or to sell. Same with the goats and sheep. Raised a pig or two each year along with one beef for us to split with my grandparents or aunt and uncle.
I HATED when it was butchering time for the chickens- we would raise 200 each spring. Then at 8 weeks old, first 100 were butchered then the following weekend the other 100. We would all sit around a pile of chickens that had been blanched and pluck then they would go in the kitchen for the rest of the work. I had to do the inside part once- I couldn't handle it- Still don't like the smell of raw chicken because of it. We had all the family and some ladies from church. Those little old ladies LOVED to come out and help and boy were they quick and thorough.

Yuck to finding another skunk. I was always so worried when I was trapping the feral cats to take them up to get them fixed, that I would accidentally catch a skunk in one. Thankfully, never happened.
One of our cats got sprayed by one and son almost did. It was dark and he thought it was one of the cats. He backed away just in time.
Lucky HS- I love checking out the embroidered pillow cases and table clothes when I go to our thrift store or garage sales. They are so pretty and took so long for someone to make.

Went shopping after taking MIL's dog for a walk. I glanced over and notice an old guy- think to myself that his shorts are the same color as his skin, NOPE- the old man was completely naked, walking across the street. This was at one of the busiest intersections in town. He didn't seem to have a care at all.
Went in to FoodMaxx just to get peaches that were on sale for $1.69 a pound- ended up getting a bunch of other stuff- spent $60- got 8lbs of chicken wings that were $1.29 a pound- Cooked them tonight in the pressure cooker in my homemade teriyaki sauce then air fried. Got some beef that I cut up and also made broccoli beef tonight.Got some other meat, a few fun snacks. Got home and see they charged us for the other peaches that were not on sale- will go back Saturday to get a refund.
Went to our old favorite Mexican restaurant- haven't been there in a few years because the food and service went down hill really bad. I saw a post on Facebook with their daily deals so we decided to give them a try again. Service is super slow still BUT she was very friendly and the food was great. We were the only people there. I got a civeche tostada and dh got the shrimp enchillada combo. Mine was only $5-the daily special. We will be back on Tuesday for Taco Tuesday- $1 tacos- six meats to pick from and one Wed. for their $5 burrito(same six meats to pick from)
The only thing on my list for today and the one thing that didn't get done today is clean out the catio- need to get that done tomorrow for sure. Need dh to put a door on the end where the playhouse is(it is an old one from the daycare that we just left inside and built the catio around it. The cats love sitting on the roof that we put shingles on and I put a 40lb bag of cedar bedding pellets inside for a big litter box) No door to it means me leaning through the little playhouse window to scoop- it is a PAIN to do .
No plans this weekend- Next weekend I think I will go to mom's.

Ginny - It always makes me feel closer to you knowing that you’ve seen the St. John River Vally area. I miss it.
Machka - didn’t there used to be a tickler tape type of thing that you could set wth different themes for reaching your goals on MFP. I think one of those had fireworks like Beverly is looking for. I don’t remember how to find them though, I did look.
Lisa - Yes! You described my history with chickens perfectly. I never would want to have them around for the smell. I also do not like birds.
Debbie - I would not be feeding any animals outside if I had to contend with all of the wildlife you do.
I have a former staff member that worked hard and is now a multi-millionaire. He and his wife built their dream home and he posts pictures all the time of feeding raccoons. A week or two ago his neighbour complained to them about it, because a raccoon was on their back porch. I would be complaining too.
A few years ago my DH started watching CNN all day! I finally told him how it was changing his personality and he should stop. He did. Thankfully.
Terri - thank you! I’m nervous and excited all at once.
Vicki - I have applied for probably 200 jobs since March and have only heard back from 1. It is so frustrating to hear employers can’t find staff and employees can’t find work. I think a huge problem is the algorithms in the HR programs these days.
Lanette - I hope you have a great trip to Home Depot and they are able to help you.
I had a friend that never witnessed any farm things, she married a guy whose family were farmers. She got back from their honeymoon, stopped at his parents and they were slaughtering chickens for the Winter. They put her right to work. She was expecting and ended up terribly sick. They were married in 1986, divorced in 2000 and she still talks about that “traumatic” experience. I’m sure it was for her, would be for me too honestly.
Rita - I bet the raccoon has a different definition of funny than you do. 🙂
Pip - your niece is getting the boot - camp. I hope she heeds your advice and doesn’t struggle all her life.
Beth - I would invite you for dinner if you were closer, it wouldn’t be a fancy dinner party with a beautiful table like Heather’s would be, but I would make sure you left full and happy.
Oh dear! I hope your DH doesn’t push himself too hard.
What is the old saying, “Pride goeth before the fall”? Something like that.
Misslissa99 - I check in here several times throughout the day.
Allie - what a sweet picture of Miles.
My student loan was approved! It’s been a busy day.
We went to the museum, I would have liked to spend more time there reading and watching things, but DH wanted to see the cars and not much else. I did buy a Christmas gift and couple of stocking stuffers.
We came home and I went to a rock and get place to get something for the dragon. I found an egg and some little crystals. Spent more than I was hoping, but it’s his main gift for Christmas.
Then my youngest daughter told me that my eldest daughter now knows about the pregnancy. Also, that our eldest daughter’s camper pulley has broken and they are supposed to go camping on Saturday. I feel for them. I’m going to call around tomorrow to see if we can find a place to get it fixed inexpensively. We are planning on using their camper in August.
I have about a dozen sets of my mother’s embroidered pillowcases. She did beautiful work. I have a set on the bed in the craft/spare room, but I won’t use them daily.
I just gave Michaela a set a couple weeks ago that had a cat on them.

Well had a nice long chat with my middle sister on the phone this evening. I knew she had gone to the doctor a week or so ago. I had texted her, "you know I will keep contacting you, its what I do". Well her back has a crushed disc, so that might be causing the numbness in legs and hands. Her insurance won't pay for an MRI or other scans until she can prove she needs them. Its crazy! The back issue showed on a normal X-Ray which the doctor approved and ok'ed it right after the appt. I don't think her doctor is really into trying to find out what's wrong. She also only eats one meal a day, granted she wakes up at 2 pm but she says she's up to 254 lbs. From like 200. She also was smoking a cigarette during the video call. (Pick and choose your battles Rebecca) was playing in my brain. It was nice chatting with her though.

Tracey- we feed the feral, neighborhood cats. Dh likes cats more than people
There is one cat, Jack (One eyed Jack) that has lived in our back yard for years. Always hangs out but never lets us get close to him. He does hang out next to the catio and talks to them at night or when he wants me to put food out for him. There has always been at least a couple in the front too- never know which will show up- Dh gives them canned and dried food a minimum two or three times a day. I keep telling him to not put so much out at night because he is just feeding the coons but he doesn't stop.4 -
Hello, my chickens...I guess I've been back in "first sleep/second sleep" mode last night and tonight. Sleep for three hours, wake for two, sleep for three. There are worse things.
Tonight's pleasant surprise, and it got longer than I meant it to:My husband has decided, I think, that the extra pounds he's put on over this last year or two are bugging him, so he's switched to light beer. In that same time, he's stopped chips in his lunch for the last month, and last night, let me know in case I'm up early that he had already made his lunch. He also said that, if I do make it next week, he's no longer taking bread in it either - just a packet with meat and cheese, a packet of fresh/pickled veggies, and an apple. He put it all together before he went to bed.
Until now, in the years we've been together, he has had a sandwich, chips, an apple and fresh/pickled veggies in his lunch Every. Single. Day. More than 3,000 lunches that were effectively the same, just the ingredients of each element changed. He also hasn't ever made his lunch the night before, because the bread gets soggy.
Uppermost in my mind as we talked was the fact that women make these changes throughout our adult lives. Most of us have tried one or many more than one way to lose weight, from calorie counting to Weight Watchers and everything in between. And he's simply changing what he eats to make himself feel better. My life could have been so much simpler if I had thought that way...
Rebecca: I hear my sister take a drag off her cigarettes during every phone call, and I don't say a word. No smoker will stop until they're ready; I certainly didn't stop until then. You're wise to not pick that battle, I'm sorry though, that her health issues are so worrisome. Glad you had a good call with her.
Tracey: Congrats on lining up the financing, and the dragon is gorgeous. Love the egg... I'm reorganizing my craft room completely tomorrow, and finally putting away the home office. Change is in the hot winds of summer, I guess.
Ah, finally, the eyes are starting to droop. Off to second sleep!

I suspect they vanished in the last significant update a few years ago.

A slow day yesterday, since it was pouring rain most of the day. With the ground now saturated, I will be going out to do some desperately needed flower bed weeding. With the rain and the heat this month, they have really taken over.
I just went grocery shopping yesterday, also something that was desperately needed. For some reason I haven't done any serious shopping for about 3 weeks. I made up for it yesterday, though! In spite of dodging the rain drops, I really did enjoy myself.
I'm afraid I snacked too much last night - way too much - and gained back some of the weight I had lost this week. My shins are already turning black and blue from kicking myself. I have fought depression all my life, currently not taking meds, and this is what happens when I let myself get down. I will not let it happen again tonight. Maybe my battle with the weeds will help with that.
Lanette SW WA state - I have two "hammer toes" on each foot. I am having them surgically straightened, that way I will be able to wear closed shoes in the winter. Somehow, when there is over 12" of snow on the ground, sandals just don't cut it! I wear sandals exclusively in the summer, so the toes are not a problem then. I had bunions removed and two other toes on each foot straightened about 5 years ago. It worked well, and I really noticed a difference, that is why I decided to have the remaining toes done now, just to get it over and done with. A lot of people don't opt for surgery for this problem, but it is impossible to find orthopedic shoes anywhere within 200 miles from where I live, so I decided to take this route. It's just simpler and easier this way. Buying shoes on the internet is not working for me, I'm afraid.
Lisa in AR - Good for you taking care of the poor plants in this weather. A tip I read years ago, when I was living in Tampa, Florida, was to water plants after dark. The water evaporates much less that way, the leaves have a chance to dry off without burning too much, and the water can soak into the ground much more efficiently. I tried it, and it did work for me. Just thought I would pass that along.
That's about all for now. I do enjoy reading all the posts, and will participate more often as time goes by.
Kayne, NH6 -
You can't smell a skunk if the tail is not up. I learned this one I met one in my yard at night. There was no smell because tail was down. If the tail is up get away fast as possible because they might get ready to spray. If you see one during the day and it is acting strange it may be carrying rabies. Bats and skunks are the most common animals here that are carriers of rabies.
Here it is best to water between 5-10 in the morning especially on the hot days. Watering at night can cause fungal issues. Now that we are on water restrictions working on what and what not to water. Still try to be done by 10 in the morning.2 -
Yesterday we went to an indoor social gathering for the first time since early 2020. I found out several valuable things about myself. I am still good at staying away from the food at these gatherings, I am capable of making small talk, and I don't like sitting around for so long. The conversations we had were pleasant. Jake and the people we talked to said the food was outstanding, and I was thrilled to get home to my familiar surroundings.
When my mother was alive, she had a skunk come into her house through the cat door.

Skunks/Racoons/Possums ~ We had a rabid possum in our garage when we bought our first house. I thought it was my Siamese cat until it started hissing at me. My husband came home from the shop and shot it.
Rebecca ~ Hope your middle sister will get the help she needs to feel better.
Lisa ~ So glad your daughter got to Hawaii safely with the children. She must have been exhausted. Sounds like Corey is being wise in watching what he eats before it gets out of control. My husband was skinny our entire married life until he had a heart attack and had to quit smoking. Food took the place of his cigarettes and now he is very over weight.
Machka ~ You sure do know a lot about using the MFP program.
Kayne ~ Hope your toe surgery is successful. I think my MnL had hammer toes on each foot but that was probably because she had been in the big time dance reviews in the 1930’s/40’s.
Barbie ~ Glad you were able to attend the social function and be around other people. But, know you were glad to get back to your usual calm life. I would have been.
Hope Everyone Has a Great Day!

Well my sister and my Dad are off on their trip to Maine for my Aunt's funeral. Packing was a mess because he has never packed his own stuff, my mom has dementia now, and my sister and I don't know what he wants or needs. He didn't get his meds packed until right before they had to leave. He scared us all saying he was out of one of the meds, but we found some. So despite the hiccups, we managed. My anxiety is fading to a more usual mild level. The next thing is to pick him up at the airport on Sunday.
So I am at home with Mom, and it's time to get back to normal diet and exercise. I gained two pounds last week.
Stay cool, my friends!

This has been a tremendously busy week. I almost regret taking 5 days off last weekend!
- My emails at home and work chose this week to sky-rocket for some reason. I could not keep on top of them.
- I had a big report I needed to get done by the end of today - the draft for review. And I made it. Sent at about 5:30 pm.
- I had several smaller reports to squeeze in there. I broke one of my rules about not bringing work home to get one of them done last evening.
- Heaps of reports and documents and things to read.
- And lots of meetings. Including 3 after-work meetings - Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
- Plus my MRI Wednesday morning.
- Lots of buses this week weren't running. Fortunately mine all came except one which left me standing outside for nearly an hour one evening after dark, in the cold.
- In bed late every night just trying to keep on top of the really important things to do.
Regarding the MRI ...
That was lovely! It was only about 15 minutes, but I dozed right off.
I got some of the results today. The damage from my fall isn't too bad. It's healing and will just take a lot of time and continued rest. However, apparently they found a lot of other "things". The receptionist or nurse who passed on the message wasn't clear about that.
I will be able to read the report myself next week, but I'm suspecting arthritis. I've got arthritis in my feet, my hips, my back, and I think I'm developing it in my hands, so it would not surprise me if I've got it in my knees too.
Noise cancelling headphones ...
One of the 1001 things I did this week was to accompany one of the admin assistants to get me noise cancelling headphones for work.
I love them!!
They are so comfortable and while they don't block the noise entirely, they reduce it to a dull murmur. I work in an open-plan office so there's always noise and chatter around.
And the sound quality is so good. I've been using bargain bin earbuds but these are amazing!
Weekend ...
Planning to spend tomorrow in the garden ... me and the plants.

That is one of the reasons we have an electronic dog door. (don't have a dog right now but for the two we had in the past). They could let themselves in and out when they wanted to but nothing else could come and go.
It was so nice when we first got it as I seemed to be the only one in the house that heard the dog scratching in the middle of the night to go out side to pee.
Same thing happened when son was a newborn. Dh never heard him cry during the night-even when I put Jona right next to him in the bed. He never did get up during the night to feed/change him.
