There is a lot to learn on this site but persistence, trial and error, and asking questions are great tools.
I tend to be a reader until a topic interests me then I jump right in and say something

Barbie, Laney looks like a love bug! Congratulations Plus her name is extra special, lol.
Joy - your floors are absolutely gorgeous. Wonderful job. I love the color of the natural wood like that. I can't remember - did you have the wood milled from trees on your property?
Margaret - thank goodness you are an excellent driver! So glad no harm done - bet you lost sleep though! Good reminder for all of us to pay special attention now it will be getting dark earlier. Deer and dears might be out and about.
I did a little more mowing this afternoon and my pedometer registered only 500 steps from bouncing.

Barbie - Laney looking good!
Writing this in the front bedroom, as I was awake in French time! Also I took a Nytol last night, and that makes me snore. Poor John.
The journey home started off going well, as our train to Montpellier was great. We had a salad lunch opposite the station, though I only ate the chicken and parmesan as I wasn't altogether trusting my stomach. In the end my stomach was OK. I did start to get a bit worried about a UTI though. Kept drinking water, but was dehydrated from the previous night.
Taxi to the airport went well. Then it went downhill. Huge queues for the security checks. Long, wiggly lines. There have been some increased alerts on terrorism, so they were being extremely thorough. I failed the x-ray, as did John, and we had to be swiped for explosives. They swiped his camera and my Kindle.
That done, we found the airport a bit downbeat. We arrived first at our gate, which was eerily deserted! Sat there until another couple turned up and we chatted. Eventually people fltered through and we got on tge aircraft in good time. Legroom seats again, so I wasn't able to keep my handbag, but I was wise to it and made sure I had taken out everything I needed and placed the bag carefully so that I could get it out after takeoff. The advantage of sitting in the front is that I had an empty seat next to me, where the cabin crew place their demo equipment, and I was part of the crew's discussion. They were very nice and patient, because we had to wait an extra 15 mins because of the security checks and a large school party getting stuck in it. People arrived very late.
Time was caught up on the flight, arriving on time. Then the real fun started with trying to catch a train from Gatwick on a windy, rainy night, with signals down, in the rush hour. Jumped on to the first thing that limped along. Was going, very, very slowly to Brighton. Standing room only. Not what I needed at that point. Exhausted after the previous night. John not happy, as he is a bit claustrophobic. I kept glugging the water as I was getting uncomfortable. I spied a couple who looked as if they were getting ready to leave, so I moved over there and asked them if they were leaving. Success. We got to sit for the slow journey home.
Because of the rain and dark, I treated us to a taxi from Brighton Station, and were mighty glad to put the key in our own front door. Phew!
I ordered a delivery of fish and chips. Much deserved.
Watched a couple of gentle programmes and then went to bed.
Recovery and laundry day today.
Oooouuuuffff!
But then, when I used to go with my parents in 1961 - 6, it used to take us three days of driving to get to the South of France. Not 8 hours door to door!
Now to make a cup of tea. I did take our own tea bags with us and thank goodness! The French have gone in for all these super fancy teas, and even black tea is weird and perfumed. We like our PG Tips. Proper builder's tea, but no sugar. We made tea in our room each morning.

Lisa: 🥰 the vase
Joy: WOW! That looks like a great job
Heather: What a saga! Travelling almost takes the fun out of holidays.
Barbie: Laney is a cutie.
We are under a nasty storm at the moment which has raged all night. There are red warnings in several places in England/Scotland. Gale force winds and torrential rain.
I have Latin Study Group at 10am, so just popped on to say 👋 Hi!

Lisa - Did you do that at your classes, or at home? I'm presuming the glass stays in there. I could do a similar thing with the girls as I bought Edie the clays last Christmas. They are expensive, so it would be a small vase! Probably an egg cup! I imagine there are YouTube videos?
I've decided today is a 'transition' day. I had my French breakfast of two boiled eggs and soldiers. I'm not going to do my gymming, or writing, but will get on with laundry, hair washing, shopping for milk, bread and veggies. Plus catching up with bank accounts etc. John is on the machines already and had his normal breakfast. I am a very slow switcher.
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx6 -
Thursday’s gratitude: freedom to nap this afternoon just because my body wanted to. Joe’s willingness to drive me and the dogs to Gold Beach in his “new” Jeep despite thinking it a waste of time and gas, because the “road trip” time is important to me.
Wednesday’s gratitude: heartfelt message from nephew T.
Knew it when I did it ;{ Chose cocoa and cookies instead of a dryer warmed beach towel before bed Tuesday. Up 3.3 lbs Wednesday morning. Then napped today instead of playing with plants or dancing. Really sabotaging monthly weight and steps averages. Foo.

Kim How terrifying to find fire both in front and behind your mom’s property. I, too, vividly remember Loma PrietaI was at work at 333 Market Street in San Francisco. As the building started to sway one of our coworkers who’d suffered a disastrous quake as a child ran screaming through the office. My boss grabbed her and hugged her under a desk. After it settled we boarded a bus to go home to the East bay. As it drove up the entrance ramp it stopped as hundreds of people were walking back down the ramp because sections of the Bay Bridge had collapsed. Boss and I then walked to a friend’s apartment in the Castro. On the way, the Marina fires lit the sky. Later that evening everyone else who was camped out in that friend’s apartment had gotten through to their East Bay friends/family but me. Finally got through to a friend who’d been with Joe and assured me he was ok. The friend then drove to our house and found that the quake had knocked our phone off the hook. That, and a little mortar off our chimney was the only damage to our 1890s Queen Anne Victorian cottage that was only a block and a half from the collapsed section of the Nimitz freeway. Bless the person who’d had the brick foundation capped. Hitched a ride with another co-worker the long way around the north bay home the next morning. Commuted by ferry for the following months, too freaked out to take BART under the bay.Lanette, I rarely watched TV news in the morning but there were two times I did, 9/11 and the Challenger disaster. Our company’s offices were right across the Hudson so my co-workers had a horrific-right-there-view and were understandably traumatized for a long time.
Heather thanks for the pics. Handrail-less spiral staircase? :noway:  :noway:

Barbara - it was a medieval stone tower. I could stretch my hands across the width coming down, and I made John go ahead of me. It was still scary and I was talking aloud to myself. "I can reach both sides. I am safe."
Washed, one load of warm laundry done, unpacked, toiletries back in place. Having a coffee, brought by John. Next I will put a hotter wash on, and go out for bread, milk, and cold meat for lunch. John is going out later for fruit and veggies.
One thing I bought for cabin bag flights is a solid foundation, by L'Oréal. I bought it in the Monoprix in Narbonne. It's solid, so it doesn't count as a liquid. I love Monoprix for purchases like that. It also does food and kitchen tools etc.

I can't believe it is already Thursday night! I have been reading but not replying. Sorry.
HeatherUK I have thoroughly enjoyed your trip. Thank you for sharing! Glad you are safely home.
Welcomes to the new ladies!
Joy I love the floors! I want to sand my kitchen cabinets and revarnish. They are oak that has yellowed over the past 30 years. Everyone wants me to paint them, but I love the wood tones.
Margaret That is so scary! I am also glad everyone is safe.
Barbie Laney is beautiful.
And now it is Friday morning.....
Barbara You know as well as I do that you didn't really gain that much overnight. It is hard to remember that though!
Lisa Beautiful vase!
It has been a long week for me. Monday was good until shopping with DH. He asked what I was picking up (Christmas cards)? Asked if they were for my major mailing? I said yes, and they are on sale. He asked if I couldn't get them cheaper elsewhere? I just put them back. I was pi$$Ed! I explained to him in the truck that I always feel like he is judging me when he does that. Money isn't an issue. This is why I don't shop with him. Went to bed early. BTW...cards are the only part of Christmas I love.
Tuesday I was running a little behind. Forgot he had dentist appointment. Got there on time. Fought with my tablet to get hooked up to hotspot while waiting. Didn't happen. He was on a roll at work. I was happy to leave at 4. Got 15 mins from home and my low tire light came on. I am thankful my son in law taught me about the new tire machines. Found one quickly and aired up tires. Proceeded to Cincinnati to go to play with oldest daughter and her friends. It was " The Girl from North Country". I would have left at intermission if I had driven to theater. The actors were wonderful, but the story was unclear, dark, and all over the place. Got home at midnight.
Slept in Wednesday morning, but those late nights are hard on this 60 y/o! Productive at work. Bought oldest daughter and I tickets to go see the musical "Cher" my birthday weekend in February. This one is here in Dayton at 630 on Sunday. Yay!!!! Worked on laundry. bathmats one of them shredded yuckies in the dryer! It was like sand. Had to clean out drier and rewash part of that load. Helped put more accessories on Bronco for DH. He can't see well enough to do the accents I added. After that, I went to bed early.
Yesterday I had a productive morning at home. Just odds and ends stuffs, but felt good. Kept getting "boss" questions and decisions at work when both "bosses" were there. Attitude....I muttered I was a boss with no authority and a regular customer heard me. He said my persona is that of the boss. Most customers don't realize that I have two other people above me. I need to quit fighting it and just do what I need to get the customer taken care of as well as the business. Was an okay day. Did get the windows tinted on my work truck. After having tinted windows, the plain ones make me feel naked. 😌 Dinner was in crockpot so fast once we got home. Fell asleep early typing y'all. Glad I had hit save!
So this morning I am caught up with here, emptied dishwasher, and getting out of hot tub. After work I am going over to a friend's house to cross stitch together. 😀
I am excited. No chores to do at her house and no one needing my assistance.
Walking Trying to be more aware even if dancing in place behind counter.
Dr Goodness printed his suggestions and trying to implement some.
Cleaning schedules The only thing I really try to schedule is laundry with sheet change on Wednesdays. "Sharkie" vacuums every day for me. Dishes get done every day. Everything else is as I think about it and needed.
Still craming badly through hips , legs, and feet. Added new stretches and still using ball on the wall. Water, magnesium, electrolytes.
I think that was all....though I will think of more I missed. Please know I read everything but sometimes the replies don't make it out of my thoughts.
Much love!
Healing thoughts!
Many welcomes!
Make the best choices you can!

Joy - what a great job you did on your floors. Our dining room is pitch pine, and we had it done with the normal floorboards a few years ago. Best thing we ever did.
Of course, we paid a lot, but the guys were in and out in a day!!!! Amazing. Not a speck of dust. I was dreading it, but it was really fine. I love our floors!
Another great thing we bought in the supermarket, was a set of bamboo cutlery. You can take it in cabin bags. We had several in room picnics and it was great. I looked on Amazon and you can buy big sets. Ours came in a sweet drawstring bag. It could be a project for you crafty people, and very sellable, I think. We have washed them and will take them again.
Today I ordered a new bread bin. Our old one is rusty inside and crumbs stick in the corners. It's around 15 years old. I have bought a new vintage style black metal one. We have other kitchen items in a similar style.

Question of the day: Have any of you ever used a personal trainer? If so, would you mind telling about your experience - are you still utilizing what you were taught?
I watched the latest Zoe presentation this morning: Resistance training: how to stay strong as you age | Prof. Brad Schoenfeld. Excellent as always, Jonathan is such a good interviewer.
Kylia - Do you wear a pedometer or some type of step-counter? I'm willing to bet you get a lot of steps in by the end of the day. Even though I had "sit down" office jobs, it was surprising how active I really was. Going to the copy machine or up to the counter or walking to another department to ask a question or deliver paperwork. Moving boxes. Bending and lifting in the supply closet. I really should have given myself more credit for that activity at the time.
I'm so glad to read you are able to attend things with your daughter and get a happy break from your routine.
Heather - welcome home. At this stage in my life, I am grateful for the traveling I was able to do when I was younger.
Which brings me to something I've been asking myself lately - am I making some decisions based on the fact that I'm closer to death (hopefully 20 plus years away but still, I'm on the downhill slope)? Shouldn't I be more interested in living life NOW and not worrying about what I'll be doing or where I'll be living in 10 years?
Barbie's new dog prompted my pondering this again. So many folks I know are hesitant to get pets when they reach their 70's. Are they eliminating potential joy and adventure, companionship and exercise? A girlfriend messaged me last night that a little kitten showed up at her son's house, it was scared and crying and he was unable to get it since it retreated into the bushes. She drove to his house and also tried, and in the end they just put out food for it and a box with a towel and are hoping it makes it through the night. She asked if I wanted a new kitten. My old kitty is on her last legs. So.... do I want to bring a new kitty into HER life right now plus - cats can live 15 years or more. Where will I be? When DH was alive and somewhat healthy, even a few years ago, that never concern never crossed my mind.
I think a new shop kitten will be in the cards at some point. Keep the mice at bay. I'm leaving it up to fate at this point.
Make it a super Friday!

Enjoying some beautiful fall weather with DS and DrewB. This was taken in the park that is near us. I told son of the near miss with the young pedestrian. He travels on the roads that he has to watch out for deer. Next time I go to see him I will now go down for lunch so I will not have to drive in the dark.

In the middle of the night we changed Laney's name to Annie because Jake has had two people in his life named Laney that don't hold good memories. We like the new name.
I don't know which sounds more exhausting, Heather's trip home from France or our first day with Annie. Lots of fun with many challenges. Jake and I have worked amazingly well as a team and Bessie is getting used to the new bundle of energy that has taken over our house.
Lanette, I had a personal trainer at the gym I went to in 1980 and it was a delight. Otherwise, I have relied on videos and books.
I live in a 55+ neighbourhood with many people with dogs. Most are mixed breed or shelter dogs. Several women I know have gotten dogs after the death of their old one. We have a provision in our will for who will get our dogs when we die along with money set aside for that person. If Jake weren't so distressed by the presence of a litter box, we'd get another cat. I am 77 years old and Jake is 78.
Too distracted to write more

Good morning ladies!
Barbie Laney looks like a wonderful happy dog!
Heather welcome home, glad you had a good trip.
My mom is still in rehab. Very slowly getting slightly stronger. We have a care team meeting today. Dad is so eager for Mom to come home, but then he won't be doing any of the work. I'm nervous about the next step. Will I be able to leave the house at all? Will I have any time or energy for my own mental health? Am I selfish for being concerned about myself?
A friend sent me some writing to review, and I don't even have a word processor set up. I have slipped.
Mom is cheerful and has no pain, so for her it's a question of bathing, medicines, meals, and moving around the house. I'm afraid she will try to go back to using the stove. I can make her meals, but I can't be with her 24/7 to keep her out of the kitchen. I need to read up on stove locks again.
Well instead of worrying, I should write down some questions.

Annie - is there someone like a social worker affiliated with the Rehab facility you could talk to about your questions and concerns? I'm thinking of someone who would be looking out for your welfare first? You have a lot of plates spinning in the air.
You are not being selfish at all. If you end up with health problems due to the stress you are under, I don't think you'll be much help to either of your parents.
Hopefully you can get some good answers at the Care Team meeting today.
Many, many hugs heading your way from my house today.
Lanette3 -
Annie- please speak with social services...they are such a wealth of information for both you and your parents.
Barbie-Annie is adorable and will keep you both busy..
Ive tried to talk to Tracy. Miles wakes up during the night and knows that mommy will come up and sleep with him
. She says Kyles job is more important and he is the breadwinner and needs his sleep. And I argued you work full time and do everything else.. keep Carmines bed set up,buy Kyle ear plugs he can close the bedroom door ,for a week she can sleep in Carmines bed there is a door at the top of there stairs. Close that door and then she has to train Miles to sooth himself back to sleep
She said she will talk to Kyle about it.. she is losing sleep, but its ok for Kyle to sleep ugh.4 -

Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx
Heather - I designed and created the polymer clay cladding on the vase at home - we're still throwing bowls in pottery class. I did two more yesterday but forgot to take pics. But for polymer clays, there are loads and loads of videos. For what I made, the glass does stay encased in the clay - glass vases are quite inexpensive here, only three dollars at Walmart for one that's about 8 inches high, and the next time I go to the thrift store, I'll look for other pieces there even cheaper.
The clay cladding on the glass vase is a very thin coat of clay, the tree is about a quarter-inch thick at the trunk, but the larger spaces are covered with barely a millimeter of clay, so it goes a long way. I ran it through a pasta machine, but you can roll clay with anything round, like a small jar or rolling pin. Anything that will go in the oven at 275F (135C) without damage can be used as either an armature (like the glass vase, where it stays) or as a slump mould, such as a bowl or plate that you can turn upside down and then take it off once your clay is baked.
I've got a couple of battery strings of fairy lights on order, as well as a couple more glass vases, as I want to make other pieces. This time, I want to carve patterns in the soft clay to show through once it's baked. Still thinking it through. It's definitely got my creativity in gear!SophieRosieMom wrote: »Question of the day: Have any of you ever used a personal trainer? Lanette
Lanette - Well, in my checkered past, I WAS a personal trainer, if that's helpful. When I ran a fitness center in Illinois, I was the one who brought in new members, ran them through the basics, according to what they were trying to accomplish, and then was available for two more sessions for free. After that, they had to pay for my time. About 1 in ten made it as far as the third session - not because of me, I hasten to add, but just because that's how long it took for them to quit.
I'm almost as bad, so I have no room to talk, but one thing my sister and I have figured out is the rule of threes... the third time, third week, third month, etc., always seems to be the hardest. If you can make it past those points with almost anything, you're doing well. Probably not helpful, sorry!
Last but not least - get a cat. If you want a cat (or kitten), get a cat, or if you want a dog, get a dog. Pretty sure that Barbie & Jake are a bit older than you are, and they still have much love to give, as do you.
Barbie - Annie looks like an absolute love, and very definitely NOT afraid of Jake!
More later, my chickens, time for chores... a little laundry, a little vacuuming, and then on with the rest of the day. Possibly more clay (I can get a little obsessed... )
Love,
Lisa

1.Write down three things you can look forward to this month. 1. Another month of sobriety 2. Cooler weather 3. Decorating for Halloween18. Set hopeful, but realistic goals for the days ahead. My biggest hope for the near future is a holiday without depression and ‘drama’ caused by my family.
2. Find something to be optimistic about (even if it’s a difficult time). I am optimistic about cooler weather.
3. Take a small step to a goal that really matters to you. I need to call my uncle.
4. Start the day with the most important thing on your to-do-list. Updating this list and My Fitness Pal.
5. Be a realistic optimist. See life as it is but focus on what’s good. I usually hope for the best but prepare for the worst. I think this counts!
6. Remind yourself that things can change for the better. No matter how bad you think it is, it can always get worse. So enjoy life no matter where you are, or what you are doing, or your circumstances.
7. Look for the good in people around you today. I can do this if I try. This was not difficult to do with visitors. Employees were a different matter!
