Still snotty, but my sleep is better and my heart rate is coming back into the 40's!
LOVE THIS NEWS!!!! Also so smart for you to keep an eye on that heart rate. That always tells me just how healthy my innards truly are.6 -
Closing in on the end of Dec already. CHilly weather here but apparently it is going to get colder next week so enjoying the runs while I can. After yesterday's 7 I decided to keep it short today at 5K. It was definitely nice out. upper 30's and crisp but no wind and clear and bright. Sometimes it's just so beautiful I can't pick one photo from my walks later,
109 miles exact?🌟🌟🌟 out of 110 goal for the year

@AlphaHowls Great News!1
-
So glad you're on the mend @AlphaHowls!2
-
I’m happy for you @AlphaHowls! Great news!
I like your NYE plan @emptydog!
This morning I went on a 7.1km run. I didn’t really have time for it with our visitors here and all, but I needed to buy breakfast bread at the bakery anyways so I ran there (via a large detour) and back (via another large detour and carrying a bag of food) to get a bit of distance in. Tomorrow is sausage race day- and NYE. Have fun everyone!
So far 139.5/160km for December. I am not going to make it to 160 but I want to be within 10kn from my goal . So my 10k plus warm up/cool down will be plenty.7 -

@AlphaHowls so glad you are feeling better! Now you can go into 2024 strong!
@martaindale very smart decision to cut your run short. I'm sure it is nothing to get alarmed about, but better safe than sorry. Take the next weeks up to your race as a taper and you'll be ready to go!
@emptydog that sounds like a great New Year's Eve plan.
Got in a HM this morning. Perfect weather in the low 50s and very light wind. Ended up being 3rd fastest HM ever. So ending 2023 on a high note
Had a lot of accomplishments in 2023:
Personal Records in HM, 15K, 10K, 10M
Running Distance records: 3 months had over 200 miles, keeping streak of 100+ miles/month alive at 24, 2163 miles for the year
2+ years without injury (this is the most amazing of them all)
Happy New Year Everyone!!!!!!!!!!!! See you in 2024

@SummerSkier I thought that is how the canal worked too. Great speedy run today and love all of the pictures.
Great job on the strides @chris_in_cal .
Nice run @daria0919 .
Great job on surpassing your monthly goal @project9percent . I'm glad you are active with a local running group too. When you say FINAL POST, are you meaning final, final or final for the year? I hope it is the latter. We will miss you if you don't come back. Happy New Year to you too!
YEAH @AlphaHowls ! I'm so glad you are able to be around people again and feeling some better. I hope you get back to normal soon!
Great running and listening to your body @martaindale ! Hopefully it was just because you were running hills today.
Nice run today @emptydog . I hope you get to run as planned tomorrow night.
Great use of your time @Laurz9191 . I don't know how you ran with a bag of groceries though. Good luck on your 10K tomorrow!

77.50/80.00 miles goal
I did another treadmill run this morning. It was tough today - my legs just didn't want to work. So, I didn't do the long run that I thought I might. I did do a run/walk at 6 x (3/2 min at 4.6/4.0 mph, 3/2 min at 5.0/4.0 mph, 3/1 min at 5.0/4.0, 1 min at 6.0 mph, than finished at 5.0 mph. Made my avg pace 13:26 min/mile. Avg HR was 127 with a max of 155 bpm. I'm pleased with the time. It did feel a bit better after the first 25 minutes.
I looked back at my year total. In order to make a nice round 80 miles for the month, I'll just need 2.50 miles tomorrow, but, I currently have 1,010.51 miles for the year. So, I think I will try to get in 3.49 miles tomorrow (normally my one mile walk rest day) so that my yearly total will wind up at 1014...even if it makes my monthly total 80.99 miles, which I cringe at. Back in August, I had some bad running math, and wound up with 80.01 miles for the month. Gotta make that up, I guess.5 -

So many accomplishments and great running for everyone this year! You all are terrific!!
@AlphaHowls - Yea for negative test and feeling better!
@SummerSkier and @quilteryoyo - The ships in the Panama Canal are actually lifted using water from a man made fresh water lake that pulls water from the local river, so the drought is limiting the water available to move the ships. This is a pretty good explanation of what is happening.
My treatment this week really knocked me down so I haven't been able to do much of anything. I think I am done for the year and will focus now on kicking off 2024.
I posted in the January thread that I signed up for run the year again. I will be starting out slow as soon as I am able and will then be ramping up. I am not expecting to hit 2024 miles so if anyone else is joining and wants to form a team let me know.7 -

Morning everyone!
Didn't run yday... Or today... So that's me done now.
153 miles for the month and 1408 for the year.
Highlights: Marathon (official one - and practice one !), running abroad (Milwaukee, Montreal, Québec city)...
Lowlights (not really a word) : knee injury in April.... and running abroad (nearly getting hit by a truck in India!)
Anyways... Not run in a couple of days...
I sprained my ankle night before yesterday. Nope - not running, nor anything alcohol related.
Was wearing these tight brown leather shoes on our anniversary night out... Ended up walking a lot in them and while didn't fall over or anything, Just for a second got trapped in stride. Came home - all swollen.
So taking a couple of days off. Elevated - Ice and deep heat; naproxen before bed after dinner..
Maybe take tomorrow off too? Or maybe a smallish / sleasy 5k? Don't know 🤷🏽
@AlphaHowls glad you're -ve and on the mend. And thank you for the dream analysis!
Special Thank yous to @quilteryoyo and @SummerSkier for literally, daily encouragement and checking in on me daily 😊❤️.
HOPE EVERYONE HAS A LOVELY NIGHT IF YOU'RE OUT CELEBRATING 🎉🍻🍻🥂.
See you in 2024... (and in some cases - literally! Hoping for an I.R.L meet-up run! 😊 )

And this wraps up another year. I went to the lake this morning and ran one mile, just in case this 11 pm thing tonight with P falls apart. I doubt it, though. She is very dependable and punctual.
Total miles this year: 630.3
Races: 5k races - 9
Ultra: 1 - An overnight race for 12 hours. 7 pm until 7 am. It was a one-mile loop mostly through the woods.
Other stuff: In early spring I had an aortic heart valve replaced and a pacemaker installed. The running came to a halt and I was afraid to start again. Eventually, I did and all is well with that.

@shanaber Thanks for the explanation about the canal. I wonder why they didn't fix it so that they could reuse the water somehow. I'm sorry that your last treatment was so hard on you. I hope you start to feel better soon. I'll let you know if I decide to join RTY again. If I do, I would need a team too.
You're welcome @tarun_yadavA . I'm sorry to hear that you sprained your ankle. I hope the heat and ice are all it needs. Please don't go out and run on it too soon. An extra day of rest is better than extra recovery due to making it worse. Of course, I'm sure you will "feel it" if it isn't ready to be run on. You did great this year, esp with the knee injury thrown in there.
@emptydog I didn't know that you had your aortic valve replaced this year. Did they do it as an open heart surgery, or through the artery? I'm asking because I had to have an aortic aneurysm repaired (removed and replaced) in Jan of 2021. It was open heart. The surgeon told me that if my valve wears out, due to being bicuspid instead of tricuspid, that he could do it through the artery somehow. I'm really impressed that you ran that far after being out with the surgery.4 -
@quilteryoyo They went in through the artery. I had it done at Strong Hospital in Rochester NY. It was quite uneventful and everything went smoothly. I have fallen twice since getting it when racing, once going unconscious and having a concussion, needing eleven stitches in my head, and now having a kind of droopy eyelid and a scar on my forehead. I didn't mention this in my previous post because I felt it was long and unnecessary.
The pacemaker surgery went well, but with that, I can no longer go through metal detectors and can't have one of the metal detecting wands used on me. I have to request that I be patted down if need be. I have an ID card that says that as well as having an 800 number to call if needed. The pacemaker records my heart and I have a box next to my bed that downloads my heart rhythm from the day and at night the box sends it to the doctor. I went for a checkup last month and they had the history of my heart and said all was fine. One more visit this year, and then I only have to go back once each year. The pacemaker is more of a hassle than the valve
replacement.
If you have any questions or I can be of help, just let me know.0 -
@quilteryoyo They went in through an artery. I had a longer post written and it seems to have disappeared when I posted it. If it doesn't show up in a while, I will retype it. The short answer is that they went in through the artery and I have had no problems with it.5

@quilteryoyo do please join us 😀
Sorry to hear your treatment wore you out @shanaber. Hopefully you’ll feel better soon. ((Hug))4 -

112.86 miles/100 mile goal
I took the second of a 2-shot Shingles vaccine on Thursday evening. I did some yoga on Friday morning and walked 2 miles on the treadmill. As the day progressed, I felt tired and achy all over – that same feeling you get after running a marathon only no shiny medal or banana given out! Yesterday, I felt 100% better, so I finished off the month by running 6 miles. It was cold and a snow/rain mix was falling. My total mileage for the year was 1156.54 miles. Great running everyone – I hope everyone has a safe New Year’s Eve and see you in 2024!
@Laurz9191 – I hope the flood waters have receded. Getting trapped in a vehicle in flood waters is one of my recurring nightmares. I hope that you get to run your sausage race. I recall our lively conversations from last year regarding the “reward” for that race!
@AlphaHowls – Glad you are feeling better and are able to interact with your mom. I’m sure that brings down the stress levels for both of you!
@SummerSkier – I too was confused about the Panama Canal ops when I heard that same thing on the news. Thanks for the additional information @shanaber!
Happy Belated Anniversary @tarun_yadavA but so sorry about your ankle injury.
Congratulations on all your PRs @Scott6255! You worked hard for them – well done!

Ugh, life got in the way and I'm 85 posts behind so will just say well done everyone and see you next year!4

Official end of year wrap-up. I'm doing some yard work today but no run today. On full extension of my ankle my Achilles feels ok but my muscles are sore from the sudden introduction of hills after a few months away. Taking a day for active recovery and back to it tomorrow.
I the Strava year in sport. Really makes you feel like you accomplished something!8 -

@quilteryoyo haha I didnt mean to be cryptic, I meant final as in "woohoo I completed my goal". Thanks for your support.5 -
Happy New Year’s Eve everyone!
Today I ran a New Year’s Eve 10k. It went really well but I am not sure how much faster my time was than last year because they haven’t posted the results yet . I was very happy with my race though, as I haven’t done speed work in forever. I really felt that all the miles I’ve been doing helped make the race feel easy even when it wasn’t. And, I got my salami .
Including warm up and cool down I completed 13.6km today bringing my December total to 153.2/160km which I am very happy with.
This year I have run 2137km! Last year when I started up running again it was 857.2km!
I might write up a short race report about the race today but I’ll post tomorrow. It’s party time now .

Finally got one of my .25 mile splits under 9 min. Since I spent most of the summer and year trying to keep myself under a 12 min pace that is a huge accomplishment for me. Overall for the year 1555 miles running and 539 intentional walking. For the month 113.3.... lucky 13s. 🤣🤣
SUPER proud of everyone here and hope to see yall on the flip side in January 2024. wow.

80.99/80.00 miles goal
I did run and walk enough to make my year total an even number. Today, I did my run/walk for 3/2 min at 4.5-4.9/4.0 mph with the finish at 6.0 mph. Avg pace was 13:20 min/mile. Avg HR was 127 with a max of 151 bpm.
I went back to Jan 2023 thread and found my goals for the year. They were:
1) Continue my streak of at least 1 mile ran or walked fast.
2) Average 70 miles a month. I reached 70 four of the last 5 months. So, should be doable.
3) Shoot for 1000 miles total for the year - run, fast walk, and other exercise (mowing, tennis, trees, cleaning gutters, etc.)
4) Improve my time for the T-Minus 10 miler
5) Lose back to my goal weight - from today, that would be 14 pounds! Yikes!
Here's how I faired:
1) Streak continues. I really need to figure out how many days now.
2) My lowest months were 80.00 miles and the highest was 95 miles - last January
3) My total miles for the year, including every thing was 1083.71 miles. Total of running and fast walking was 1014 miles. That is really something that I didn't think would be possible. My 2022 total for running and fast walking was 759.69 miles!
4) MISS - I was about 10 minutes slower. I'm blaming the heat this year.
5)MISS - I'm almost at exactly the same place I was a year ago. I guess it is a small win that I didn't gain anything.
I hope everyone has a great evening and a happy and healthy 2024!8 -
Well, I only managed 1.7 miles on our walking pad this evening. Too tired to get any more in for December.
If you’re bored and feel finding out why I’m 2 miles short of my goal this month then read on…..So, as many of you know, my husband is supporting me in my mileage efforts and he signed up to do the 10K with me. He, of course, used to run much faster than me when we both ran. My “run” pace was his light jog pace back in the day. He also ran a few more marathons than I did. But lower back pain issues have resulted in his having to quit his running in recent years.
Well, one weekend day recently there was a day when we walked 4 miles together. This walk included us going past a Ford dealership. I saw a Mach E in the parking lot and told my husband I thought he should sell his Outback and buy the Mach E. Well, I was mostly kidding, but…
Apparently I put this idea in his head and this past Thursday after work he went to test drive it. That made him even more interested in getting an EV. He also looked online at cars and got to thinking about the Tesla Model Y.
Since he had to work Friday I told him I could test drive one for him. Well, he liked the idea and after I drove it I told him he’d probably like it. It costs a lot less than the Mach E and qualified for the Federal $7500 rebate here in the US, but it had to be purchased by the end of the day December 31st. The closest one available was 3.5 hours drive away in another State.
So, yesterday (Saturday) we drove to see it and planned to buy it. We got down there and no one had told us in advance about how the payment for it works. We weren’t able to pay for it yesterday. 7+ hours of driving total for an unsuccessful car purchase.
So, we drove home very late last night and took care of the financial end of things that were needed, but then also had to drive there again another 3.5 hours today to finish the financial stuff and bring the car home with about a 4 hour drive home due to traffic issues and EV charging time.
Needless to say, my plan to get the last 3.7 miles done between yesterday and today did not happen because of all the driving and time away from home these past two days.
So, my little snowman got to 48 out of the 50 miles I had hoped to cover in December.
And, all this took place because I joined this thread, got my race mojo back and signed up for the 10K.
On a positive note: my Fitbit watch tells me I covered 112.94 miles this December. That’s the most mileage per month during the 2023 year for me. So, 48 of those miles were the “official” walks/runs that I recorded and the other 64.94 miles were miles covered at work, walking the dog, house cleaning, short walking trips that I didn’t record, etc.
I think my December was quite successful as far as miles. 😀8
