Kylia, Thank you for thinking of me as serene. Years ago I read a quote that referred to the image of "a clock ticking in the thunderstorm". I continue to aim to be like that. I love your plans to incorporate small changes. They will add up and pay huge dividends.

Good morning ladies
And Happy New Years to one and all!!
Im awake but still in jammies and of course Alfie is awake and barking at nothing.. yes it is annoying but what can you do..have to love him for what he is,other than barking..he is the sweetest dog in the world..
I think after a bit the dog and kitty will be buds.. and might even chill him out a bit.
Tomorrow is my sons 39th birthday ,can't believe it..he has taken this week off from work.so he is resting up after his jaunt into NYC.they walked 15 miles ,pretty much all day long and the only place they didnt see was Time Square.
I really don't know what my word is for this year but I think it will be Determination ,to declutter in all areas of life,my home and eating habits and to get to a healthy weight and try and get off at least some of my medications.
Today though Im resting up..Im tired..6 -
You all only have one word for the year; I couldn’t decide so picked 3. Here is my goal list for this year. I may add more physical exercise at some point, but not until I get through all the doctor appointments this month: Renal, Cardiologist, last eye cataract surgery, and therapist. One a week will keep you all posted of anything worth talking about with this. Meanwhile, I will be working on this:
2024 Goals
Words of the year: simplify, empowered, and authentic.
1. Do 12 different crafts this year: color, draw, sew, crochet, knit, bead jewelry, candles, make cards, origami, scrapbook, macrame, loop looms 0/12
2. Walk 7250 steps daily.
3. 30 minutes activity 0/7 days
4. Journal 0/5 days a week
5. Meditate 0 /7 days a week
6. Family phone calls 0/12 monthly.
7. Save $1000 for emergencies
8. Research and apply for senior independent living in Roswell, one a month. 0/12
9. Drink 8 days a month or less. 0/8
10. Read /24 books this year.
“I’m learning to treat myself as if I am valuable. I find that when I practice long enough, I begin to believe it.” In All Our Affairs
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God.” —-Romans, The Bible.
Keep it Simple
But for the Grace of God
Easy Does It
First Things First
Just for Today
Let it Begin with Me
How Important is it?
Think
One Day at a Time
Keep an Open Mind
Live and Let Live
Let Go and Let God
say the Serenity prayer.
“Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can, and
The wisdom to know the difference.”
I also say a step 7 prayer which is very simple and it goes like this: 'God, please help me deal with my character defects.’

Lisa The sunroom is looking outstanding...
Kelly The pot hole story was a good laugh to start off the new year. I shared the shark one on Facebook. I tried some of the others but they didn't paste for me.
For this year I hope to carry over the habits that are making me feel stronger especially the change in my diet with no wheat and limited other grains. The next step is to reduce of eliminate sugar consumption. Had a great chat with a friends son who is a vegan. Even with no alcohol and a vegan diet he has a fatty liver. Thinking about it he might be eating refined carbs or carbs with too much sugar. His mom loves her sugar!
HAPPY NEW YEAR DEAR FRIENDS!2 -
Today I will spend time with family either electronically or in person, weight in (weekly on Mondays), find a bell to ring, while celebrating my independence, and jump! (My new daily goals will come from these “Today is”.) See spoiler. Lots today4
-
Happy New Year ... love and blessings to you and all of your families!
Barbie ... thank you for starting us off on another year!
Annie ... hugs. Grief is so very different for each of us.
Lisa ... the sunroom looks great!
Kelly ... pothole pictures!
Rita ... to accomplish 78% of your goals is amazing! Congratulations on being alcohol-free for 5 months too! You are doing great!!
2024 GoalsI continue to need to move off of my current weight as it was essentially the same throughout 2023. I will continue with the intermittent fasting window of 20:4 each day of the week because I like it and when I'm consistent I feel better. But I'm not going to stress about it either. I don't have a word for the year, but knowing there are challenges ahead, maybe an intention ... to be patient and kind. Can't go wrong there.

My Christmas season eating marathon is OVER! No more crackers, cheese, pepperoni, dip, chips and all the other things I avoid for most of the year. I just threw out the snacks we had for New Year's eve.
In 2024 I have faith that I will get my bad knee replaced, new glasses, and hearing aids that actually work! I also have faith that we will get at least one thing done each month to extend the life of our 30+ year old house.
Carol in GA10 -
Kelly - Now, that's a pothole - love the creative ways people are dealing with it.
I also am thrilled to read everyone's word/words and looking at the progress we've made through the years and what our goals are. You all have inspired me in so many ways.
So.... Accumulate Health. Building on small successes and not beating ourselves up for "failing." I think Dr. Matt emphasizes a lot of ideas and philosophies we've discussed in this group during the past year. Whether we realize it or not, many of us have incorporated some of these strategies in our lives and are doing better for it.
Below are a few of Dr. Matt's short videos. He's just a small town naturopath who films these in his office or outside his office. I think his sister helps him sometimes. When the student is ready, the teacher appears, right? In this case he's sort of the son I never had, but better. I don't have to buy birthday and Christmas presents for his 7 kids, lol.Dr. Matt - A healthy mindset v. self-imposed limitations: "when is the perfect time to change habits?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpOrcv2j3OEDr. Matt - New year, new habits: "change your consumption". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANqjlCdKRD4Dr. Matt - 7 Healthy Eating Habits | What I recommend to my patients for BIG results: "accumulate health layer by layer," https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJgmgkZ8PQQ
Just got in a good nap, and finished making mom's Indiana kidney bean salad for lunch. It's damp and foggy and I hope to see the sun for a few hours.
Make it a wonderful day/week/year.

MFP Weekly Check-in January 1, 2024
Evie in BC -I checked back to see my weight on Jan 1st, 2023 and lo and behold, I've actually lost 1.6 lbs since then! I was quite sure that I was up by a considerable amount, so not as bad as I had feared. Not as good as I hope 2024 will be, but it's a start!
Kylia in Ohio - Happy New Year! So I ended the year 1 pound heavier. My start for 2024 is 129.6. My concentration was mental health for 2023. 2024 I plan on being selfish in my self care. I am 15 lbs from goal weight. I get close then self sabatoge. Positive attitude says ....I only gained 1 pound, not bad considering my lack of effort in that portion of my life. I have all you ladies to keep me in line!
Rita in Roswell NM - This year has been up and down all year in my weight. I have been retaining water and losing it almost every week! Last year on January 1, I weighed 180 pounds. Today I weigh 176, last week on Monday I weighed 171 pounds. All depends on water weight and what I ate the night before. Too much salt yesterday! RVRita
Lanette in SW WA State – Weight seems to have stabilized into a “set point” good for my age. High protein breakfast helps snack attacks. Looking for ways to add a bit of different resistance type exercise for strength and/or balance. Still walking for bone and strength building with various weights at least 30 minutes per day in 10-minute increments, after meals.

Lanette Dr. Wholeness love that name...
After responding I will go back and watch videos. I think they will fit in nicely for my mantra for 2024 which I got from Alberto Viilolde...
creating health, rather than fighting disease.
I may be repeating myself. Given adjusting to turn in DH health not surprised ...I tried teff and goat for the time at an Ethiopian Restaurant that was name after where Lucy who they believe is one of the oldest human found. I loved the tea, the teff (It is a gluten free nutritious grain), a red dal dish, but not so much the goat. Next time the veggie platter. DH managed to go out twice to eat over the weekend. I got the gluten solo pizza with red onion and spinach. Yes another thing to create a decent gluten free pizza crust! Still got used to the cracker-like crust and did not feel bloated after eating!
First video l like his need to humble self and ask for help, then find like minded who are on their way to creating a healthier self like my friends here. In addition creating healthier habits examples he gave were better sleep habits, drink a glass of water first thing when you wake up. For me it is to eat or to drink something bitter (dandelion tincture) before I eat to get the bile working to properly digest my food, eat more fermented foods, continue to avoid what products and most grains if possible, take time to stretch during the day especially if fell tense in my legs...4 -
Hello and Happy New Year to all from New Jersey!
I am embarking on this journey once again. Thank you for all of the inspiring quotes for the New Year. I have never posted before but think that getting involved in the community may make the difference.
Wishes for a good start in 2024 to all.8 -
This is a few days late, but when I found it in my files, I couldn't resist sharing it with you. I have no idea who wrote these verses, when they were written, or whether the authors are still among us.
O Fitness Pal, My Fitness Pal,
How steadfast are thy diaries.
O Fitness Pal, My Fitness Pal,
We need our daily entries!
Your member boards are full of fans,
Full of facts, and diet plans
O Fitness Pal, My Fitness Pal,
You've given us a road map.
O Fitness Pal, My Fitness Pal,
How lovely are thy scruples.
O Fitness Pal, My Fitness Pal,
You have so many pupils!
Your older gals are always here,
Voicing triumphs, bringing cheer
O Fitness Pal, My Fitness Pal,
You've given us our future.
O Fitness Pal, My Fitness Pal,
I HATE to drink the water!
O Fitness Pal, My Fitness Pal,
I know I really OUGHTA.....
To flush my bod of sodium,
and extra carbs, and fats I've done,
O Fitness Pal, My Fitness Pal,
I wished I LIKED the water!
O Janie, dear, release your fear
Of plain old, stupid water.
It's not so bad, just gulp it down
I'm telling you, you oughter!
It's good for you, never severe,
It's free of fat, and everclear!
O Janie, dear, O Janie, dear,
I'm telling you, you oughter!
Jingle Bells, fitness pals, losing all the way
o what fun it is to log and see what others say
Jingle Bells, kettle bells, muscles really pay
For all the exercise we do each and every day – hey
Jingle Bells, Fitness Pals,
Losing all the way---,
Oh, what fun it is to write
Our food log every day---,
Jingle Bells, Fitness Pals,
Losing every day---,
Drink your water, Janie, dear,
Have a happy, leaner day--Hooray!
Sing to the tune of Jingle bells (beginning verse and chorus)...
Oh, I stubbed my toe
Kettle bells were in my way
When the rope I jumped
For keeping fit to stay.
Get my trainer in the ring
Sock him with a right
Left upper cut to the chin
And he’s out for the night.
Oh jingle bells, this shirt smells
How much do I weigh???
Oh what fun to lift those weights to keep those pounds at Baaa-aay!
Jingle bells, this shirt smells
I weigh how much you say???
Oh, nuts! Oh, fudge! Hey that sounds good…no, no that’s—how—you—got—this—way!!
Dashing to the pot,
Then stepping on the scale,
Hoping to be down,
To kiss goodbye the whale!
When numbers do decrease
We shout and sing O my!
What fun it is to finally see
A normal BMI!
Oh!
Jiggle Buns, Jiggle Buns
Jiggle all the way
Shake the fannies, wave the arms
Each and every day, hey!
Jiggle Buns, Jiggle Buns
Jiggle all the way
Oh what fun it is to see
Our fat just melt away!

sing slowly to the tune of We Three Kings...
We Three Pounds of Holiday Pudge
Gath'ring 'round from all of the fudge
Holding on to thighs and ab-do-mens
Now we can barely budge.
Oh--
Pounds of peanuts, pounds of fat
Pounds of cookies, this and that
We'll be brooding and protruding!
Guide us from thy sweets at last.
We three pounds of holiday pudge,
Mama's dressing, yeast rolls and fudge,
Spread the table, hardly able to resist each special treat.
Oh,---- Here's the eggnog, spiked with rum,
Christmas cookies, by the ton,
Cakes and pies and special candies,
That's why we weigh a ton!
O little town of "eat too much", how big we see thee grow!
Around our middles and our thighs, and places we do not know.
Yet in the coming new year, we'll vow to make it right!
The weight that's here from all the years, we'll finally kiss goodbye!
Everyone ready to sing? Here we go!
We Wish You a Merry Food Day - We Wish You a Very Good Day –
We Wish You Would Find a New Way - to Lose Weight Next Year!!
Good Tidings We Bring - to You and Your Kin –
We Wish You'd Chew Slowly and Start Thinking Thin!
Should all the calories we consumed at Christmas Party time,
Those extra cookies, cakes, and pies, and that extra bottle of wine;
Be on their way, they’re out of here, not sticking to my thighs---
I’m back on track, I’m working out, and making choices WISE!
For all my friends at 50+, I wish you all that’s fine,
We’ll log our food, and chat and sing, drink our water, not the wine!
For MFP and 50+, for health and exercise,
We’ll drink a glass of water clear, and toast those pounds good-bye!

On Physical Health
I drink a glass of water first thing in the morning, before I leave for work, and have done for many years. Pretty much since I discovered I had kidney stones.
I refrain from drinking my calories as much as possible.
I also take a small collection of vitamins in the evening. I have tried various ones over the years and have dropped the ones that really don't seem to make a difference.
My diet can be described as "leaning toward being vegetarian". Lots of fruit and vegetables, grains, seeds etc. Some dairy. Minimal meat.
I don't consume a lot of added sugar except for my after dinner deserts. 😀 Those are usually a couple ice cream bars.
I exercise as much as I can but want to increase the amount I exercise this year. Our home gym helps. The stairs at work help. And getting outside to walk (maybe run again) and cycle are my favourite ways to exercise.
I also want to work on going to bed a few minutes earlier during the week.
(Interestingly, the Wellness Wheel is about various aspects of mental health ... just one item on the Wheel is about physical health)

I went into my shoe cupboard today, where things are lurking! Things that I haven't worn since the early noughties or longer ago. Heels! More heels! Aaarrrggghh!
Plus some things that are now too small. Who knew your feet grew as an older adult!
I have extricated seven pairs for the charity shop, and two for the trash. An old yoga bag, and a heap of old papers.
HOORAY!

Barbie thank you for faithfully starting us fresh! You’re my gratitude for today.
Yesterday’s gratitude: 12/31 Joe came to me and said “You’re in the newspaper!” local newspaper documents the commissioners’ meetings and quoted all who spoke, including me. I asked him what he thought and he shook his head. “I don’t do politics.” BUT a few moments later he said “but I’m proud of you for standing up for what you believe.” Another example of how he’s mellowed and matured. There would have been a day when he would have made his preference for me not to get involved very clear and in a not so supportive way. Yay Joe!
Annie hugs, just hugs more and more. Glad you can vent here. Really glad your cousin is helping organize the finances. Hope your father accepts backing away from them entirely. (((more hugs)))
Lanette thanks for the vit D links. Last May I was at 41. Must be more faithful about taking the D3/K2 EVERY day ;}
Lisa came to the same conclusion as you about the microplastics. Leaning that way about the Fosamax/progesterone/estradiol conundrum. Love your acupuncturist!
Kylia so what treasure was concealed in the hidden compartment?
Rita WAY big improvement. Bravissima!
Michele does the dentist who’s doing your root canal, know you’re on Prolia? Sounds like someone at BK is trying to maximize profit at the cost of quality and customer service. Short term benefit, but catastrophe in the long run.
Lanette incorporating exercise snacks while waiting for something else, yes! Run water to heat for dishes? Sink pushups. Wii to warm up? Seated fast marching and surprise! That really gets to the gut. Water to boil for tea? Invite the dogs to play “Chase me!” around the house.12/31: Move: : ZERO sets PT , dogs to powerline, Steps:4047Finished thru 2023. Lanette Thank you for sharing Dr Matt. Healthy mindset and consumption I found interesting. Mindset is a work in progress. Consumption choices.....I tune out the news which my DH likes on every morning and evening. Tuning out is best for me mentally. Everyone knows the world is a mess. It is also full of feel good stories, ie the pothole shenanigans. Too bad the news doesn't give us briefs on things we may need to know followed by lots of good things! I will continue to work on my consumption of good for me which includes all of you! As for the layers towards health. I am doing really well there! I already shop very little processed, wild caught, hormone free, grass fed. I can't do artificial sweetners as they drop my blood sugars badly. If I eat anything after dinner it is usually just a dark chocolate my DH leaves on my pillow. So the 2-3 hr not eating window is good. I do limit vegetable oils. Will continue that. The three that I need to prioritize are...1) meal planning. I know this works as when I do it I snack way less, think more clearly, and lose weight. 2. Water- I want to be a plump juicy grape . Will add water first in morning. 3) protein rich meals especially when breaking my fast.
Barbie That was fun! I sang right along!
Great job ladies on weights and challenges. Recognizing out potholes and our smooth roads is awesome in our progress to healthier lives.
Machka My thinking on the reason there are more mental spokes is because if those aren't being addressed the physical isn't going to happen. You do a great job of balancing them all. It is inspiring!
Welcome @njmomof3 !
Well, I ate steamed shrimp for breaking fast. I have had 24 oz water. I dusted new room, watered plants, cleaned master bath including the tops of cabinets-yuck, vacuumed house, and threw out a bunch of stuffs sitting in a basket for 2 years. I sorted the last bag of stuffs that I bagged to deal with later. I have walked/danced 22mins intentional exercise. I read my book for 30 mins. Did my Bible reading. So far great day! Still need to wipe down my bathroom, clear off bed in guest room, and clean out desk drawer that is overflowing. Dinner will be leftovers tonight.
Have sat long enough. Time to grab more water and move to next task.
Love y'all,
Kylia in Ohio trying to take advantage of new year, new month, day off work to set up success
