AUGUST 2024 Monthly Running Challenge
WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the JULY 2024 Monthly Running Challenge which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10919058/july-2024-monthly-running-challenge/p1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until August 1, 2024 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:

After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the bookmark in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.comandcreate your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody else’s Chapter 20.

You may see some phrases / words that are unique to our little group when it comes to describing some of our runs. It is a mash-up of words that seem to best describe the way the run felt that day. Here are some examples. Feel free to come up with your own to add to the dictionary 😃

Hurrah for August - that means the days are getting longer and Spring is on the way!
My aim for the month is to get to 200km - all part of my building up to the half marathon series I’ve entered, which starts in October.9 -
My goal is to be as diligent as I can with marathon training. It will be hard to get in my mileage the first 3 weeks of August due to work obligations and I might have to run 2x some days. I really am not sure how I can get in long runs during this period that aren’t split…. I will aim to match or top the kms I ran this month, which will probably be about 260km.6

I'm thinking yay, the sun is rising a little later and fall is on the way!!5 -
I sorted out my plan and it looks like 113 miles for August. My schedule is more normal this month so it should be doable.6
-
I'm setting my goal at a very conservative 60 miles this month vs. 100 miles last month. This weekend I have a biking/camping trip and then I'm flying to Rome on the 23rd and heading out on an 11-day Mediterranean cruise on the 27th.8
-
I'm going for running all 31 days in August.
So based on that... Going for 185 miles.

@Teresa502 hope you have a great trip to Rome and enjoy your Mediterranean cruise. Please let me know how it was. We are thinking of doing that, or an Alaskan cruise for our 40th anniversary next summer.
I will start my training plan Aug. 1 for my 15K race in October, but I can't see the full plan schedule, so not sure how many miles are planned for this month. I'll just say 80 miles and see how it goes.5 -
I'm going to set my goal for 130 again for August. We still haven't decided if we will do anything for our anniversary this year, but if we do then I may have a couple of days that I am unable to run. Whatever we do, it won't be as exciting as Rome and a Mediterranean cruise. Have fun @teresa502.

@Teresa502 @Laurz9191 Keep us posted on your trips! I'd love to see some pictures.
@Scott6255 Can't speak to the Mediterranean cruise but I can recommend an Alaska cruise. It's beautiful with the bonus of nice cool weather!4 -
August is underway with a Thursday 12k. Previously, I’d do 10k on a Thursday but I’m upping my monthly mileage so I have changed my Thursday 10k to a Thursday 12k but, because I’m a bit thick and didn’t plan my route properly, I actually ended up doing 14k today. Oops.7
-
Awww. Sounds like you are going to have a great August @Teresa502 . Enjoy your trips. Looking forward to your pictures of it all.
Great running @ContraryMaryMary . It seems we all have some trouble with running and math at the same time.
My goal for August is to go to the gym 3 times a week and run/fast walk a total of 60 miles. I really hope I exceed that, but I know that 60 should be doable.7 -
Hey newbies, we create a new monthly thread (each month of course)
Post your August running goal here, then check in with your progress. Good luck with your running.

August Running Goal: 18 runs, 60 miles
4.5 lbs. weight loss last month (240.6 lbs -> 236.1 lbs)
I'm Chris; I live in San Diego, California. I started doing daily runs to get back into the habit and made it 89 straight day, certainly the longest I've every done. I gave 'first thing in the morning runs' a try, but it doesn't work for me.
For August I'm starting a "Garmin Coach" 5k plan. I chose coach "Greg McMillian." It is just under 15 weeks to prep for this 5K with a finish goal of 34:00 mins.
Please connect on Garmin if you have one. Just click @quilteryoyo and add.

Got in 5.7M (at 09"56).4 -
Good morning.
I am in for 75 miles this month.
I am house-sitting for a week starting tomorrow morning. So there is that.
Wishing everyone a great month.7 -
Good Morning! I did squeak out 100 for July so I am going to set my goal early for 100 this month. It's usually a pretty hot one here. But that is nothing new!8
-
Hello! Hello! My August's mileage goal is 50 miles. I was short last month, but I am not sad about it, especially since I am getting back to losing weight, building up endurance, and focusing on strength training. This month, I do want too really focus on stretching. On Tuesday, I had my monthly 90-minute massage. My massage therapist told me what I was expecting: my hips were tight. A lot to focus on, but it's all good.
Well, everyone, have a great Thursday and I'll talk with you soon. 😊7 -
8/1 16.42 miles, Lightening show to North and East

Running Partner caught me last 4 miles

Checking in for this month. Humid 28C, hardly any wind.4 -

The start of my training plan had me do a 2 min warmup, 5 minute hard run, and a 2 min cooldown for a baseline. Did it on the treadmill since running outside hurts. Surprised at the 7:09 pace since treadmill running always records so much slower than outside.
Followed it up with a 3 mile run just because.

I will start my training plan Aug. 1 for my 15K race in October, but I can't see the full plan schedule, so not sure how many miles are planned for this month. I'll just say 80 miles and see how it goes.
My 5K plan starts today too, for a Saturday November 2nd 5K. I have the same 2/5/2 first run assignment.
In choosing the plan I selected 16-20 mile/week running. So for the month I guessed 16x4 and rounded to 60 miles for the month. Also, I selected 4 runs per week so I guessed 18 runs for the month.
I might finagle it in the last week to try and meet the goal, but I'm confident I'll be pretty close either way (without the dreaded injury sidelining me.)
I'm excited to see all of your prep....15K is a fun distance, no shortcuts.7 -
I don’t actually know what my Garmin Coach plan has in store for me (it doesn’t reveal info on more than a couple of runs in advance), but I will aim for 40 miles/64.3km in August.
Rest day today, first run of the month tomorrow. Happy running, everyone!

August Goal: 130 Miles
8/1: 3.53 miles
3.53/130 miles completed for August
I ran 3.5 miles today. It was so hot. It was really a struggle starting out. I started out slow, but I worked to increase my speed and ended up with some nice negative splits. My splits were 12:21, 11:53, 10:46 and 9:56 for the last half mile. It was a tough run, so I felt pretty good about it.

I think I did it @chris_in_cal .
Nice start to the month @tarun_yadavA .
Nice run @AlphaHowls . Love the words of wisdom.
Wow! Very nice @Scott6255 .
Great start to Aug @yirara .
Very nice splits @kgirlhart !
1 Aug - Walked 1.00 miles - Ran 0.00 miles - Treadmill
1.00/60.00 goal
I had an echocardiogram this morning, just to ensure my bicuspid valve is still holding it's own. Then, mom and I ran some errands and saw two of my great nieces. Today is the oldest one's birthday. I was very tired after we got home (I didn't sleep well at all last night) so I just did a mile walk on the treadmill to keep the streak going.

5 miles to start the month yesterday. I don't know why but I hit a wall at work around 3 when all of a sudden I was exhausted. So strange. I still managed a mile walk after getting home but it was as if I had been drained of all energy. No real reason. This morning I feel better. Perhaps the heat and humidity and smoke took a toll on me. The AQC was not horrific at 80 something but still I could tell it was dusty with that sahara stuff we get. I went to bed very early not because I was sleepy but because I had no energy to do anything.8
