Yesterday's tea/dinner was really lovely. They have been unable to get into the kitchen for a few days, so my son has been improvising with a camping stove, in the family room, with great difficulty. The planned bbq hit the storm. So that was cancelled. He said he had been looking forward to my dinner all day!
With 7 of us, with very different tastes and dietary requirements, I prepared a variety of things to pick at on the table, poached chicken, prosciutto, jumbo frankfurters, but it all went down beautifully. My DDIL especially enjoyed the potato salad. (I was thinking of my American friends when I made that!) Lots of condiments, a variety of dips and sauces. A lovely mixed salsa salad with avocado. Various pittas, and GF ones. Of Course, Bea stuck to her pasta with pesto, and polished off a huge bowl full.
Dessert was salted caramel ice cream for all, with loads of fresh strawberries and raspberries, and extra caramel sauce. Much appreciated!
My son said, how lovely it was to be able to sit around a table together. The kids told a lot of silly jokes.
I know it is a lot of work, and I was feeling a bit resentful beforehand, but it really is one of my favourite things in all the world, to sit as a family, or friends, around a nicely laid table, and eat delicious food together. And talk, and laugh. Memories are made of this.
(It goes without saying that mobile phones are banned at the table.)
I suppose we had our own little family Thanksgiving. It certainly felt magical.
John did all the clearing and washing up, and helped with preparation and shopping.
Nice dresses Pip! Perhaps you ought to find a place to go to where you could wear them. A nice little bolero or jacket would see them anywhere, even in cooler weather. I wear my dresses on cruises in the evenings, but they have to be maxi

Happy Anniversary Machka and Rowan!
Lanette It is amazing how things show up when we quit panicking or looking! New Balance- my DH wears them. I order directly from website in urgent situations. We usually buy when we go to TN as that is when they have a buy one get second pair half price.
Yesterday was crazy steady busy . I actually felt good mentally most of day, then.....ugh. DH was in a mood. It started with what's for dinner? He ate but side comments about not having this or that because I haven't been to store. Next was contractor not doing what he said he was going to get done. We'll he did 75% of it. We did last 25% when we got home. Then it was I was sitting down scrolling on phone.....you get the picture....I went to bed at 830! If I wasn't going to "do anything right", then bed took care of that. I get that he is frustrated about a lot of things, but I wasn't going to be the target of that anymore. Slept until 530 this morning. "Should" have gone to grocery this morning, but still need to shower and get to work. Hoping for a better day especially since we have a banquet to go to tonight....The last one we went to ended in a huge fight. The one before that I had a migraine and slept in the Bronco for most of it. We will see.....
Beth So happy that your Mom is finally in a good place!
Heather Sounds like a wonderful time was had by all!
May your day be full of of peace like a kitten purr, Joy like finding a missing item, and knowledge that you made the best decision you could in the moment.
Lots of love,
Kylia in Ohio6 -
Beth: Wonderful that your Mom is in a new, quality place! So pleased for you and her!
PIPCD: I am with Heather, I would find some type of wrap for the black dress and wear them. You look great in them and with all your hard work exercising you should wear the black dress!
Lanette: Wow! Great that you found the necklace. Sorry you missed lunch with your friends. I will take a look at Dr. Litrel
Margaret Turk: I find that eating in moderation doesn't work for me like it use to. Cheese and starches are not my friends. Even in moderation. I am on my last month of Nutrisystem. It seems like it is meals with carbs that are portion controlled and this is why I have not lost weight. The meals seem low in fiber to me. Nutrisystem might disagree!
RVRita: I am finally ready to look at MyPlate to increase my veggie consumption! I plan to do this this morning!
Kim: I am so sorry you are going through this. Very stressful.
Debbie: I am trying Pilates now. It was always on my bucket list. I will do the machines until Christmas then do a home program.
Carol: How is the swelling and warmth in your knee. Do you think it might need some prednisone. Can you take Ibuprofen.
I am just thinking what can you do to reduce the inflammation. A doctor's visit might be best.
GrandMallie: So good of you to help Doris. I am beginning to think about packing for this wedding the end of September. It is on Boston's North shore. Usually people in MA are in their jeans but I am not sure if those are right for a wedding week end. I ordered some jeans from Amazon..skinny jeans. And then I looked at Chicos and the other fashion catalogs that came in...wide pants....even wider than the 60s I think...I don't feel inclined to buy a pair. I hope the MA people are not in new wide jeans when I go up there! Because I will be in my skinny jeans! Praying for Tracey as she sees the MD 2x a week now. It will be a relief when her pregnancy is over.
Kylia: Congrats on the Grands having their licenses!
Flea: I would have added Boston for their public transportation. There was a day when Boston was proud of its public transportation but I understand there are upkeep/repair issues, money issues and management issues now.
Tracey: 2.5 hours by public transportation. Certainly not feasible.
Monique: I hope you do not have another headache for awhile!
Heather: Great on getting some writing done. I have joined a writing group that meets once a month on zoom and occasionally for a lunch or coffee. The writings are submitted in a drop box before the meeting and only the critques are done at the meeting. My plan is to stay in 3 days a week to clean, write, knit and home exercise and work on Bills and such. Going out every day leaves me feeling other goals are not met.
Machka: I eat no where near that amount of veggies. I have bought some stir frys but they are not good. I might have to make my own stir fry and keep it in the fridge each week. A habit I would need to build.
Lisa: So great to be in touch with the children! My son will be moving back to town in the next 2 months or so. I wonder how that will work? How often will I see him?
Annie: You are doing such a great job! I know taking care of your Dad is limiting your life! You have such a great attitude. I am so glad you are able to get some horseback riding in.
3 Wins: I went out to dinner last night with some friends. I have a lunch date with a friend on Tuesday. My son is coming next Thursday!
3 improvements: I am walking with others so I am walking faster. I keep my yoga mat and blocks out now and do a little yoga every day. My house is staying cleaner.
Grateful: That so far I have been able to stay in my home where my memories are.
Intention: My intention is to pick up a little volunteer project at some point.
Excited: That my son is moving back to town.
Accomplish today: Read a book about Mr. Roger's for a book discussion a local church is having, Declutter 50 items. Clean the guest bathroom and vacuum. I have already done the dishes, the laundry and swept the floor! I plan to stay in today!
Best,
Rosemarie from GA

Good morning beautiful ladies!
Kim what a snafu! Hope the lawyer can push effectively.
Rebecca and Beth Yay for new fasting projects!
Carol sorry about your knee pain.
Lanette Yay for finding the necklace! I hate the way sneakers change models and leave us guessing. They ought to at least provide a replacement recommendation on the website.
Beth Yay for moving your Mom! So glad you have found good care.
Machka happy anniversary! And great job losing 1 kg!
Heather Yay for family meals! I was raised to eat that way.
Teddy had a good vet visit. I'm much relieved. His heart murmur is stable at grade three of six. They said he needs a canine cardiologist workup only if we are doing anesthesia for his teeth, so I said we are skipping all that. Too hard on his poor little heart. He chews the dental greenies. I might try a dental rinse again but last time it just sat on the counter.
My sitter did come, bless her heart, and so all was well. And we went out to dinner with my buddy, and I left food on my plate! Yay me! I did change my clothes in a rush and ended up in comfortable leggings instead of something more formal, but no one seemed to care.
Have a great day! May you be happy, healthy, safe and free!

Beth ~ So very glad you were finally able to get your mom in a facility that sounds like a wonderful place for her to be. When my brother-in-law had to be moved to the memory part of his assisted living facility my heart felt so sad for him. His room was TINY, dark, and barely able to fit his single bed, dresser and computer table. Then, the tv room was also dark and very depressing. I don't think he got very good care there and it probably contributed to demise.
Rosemarie ~ I hope you enjoy your skinny jeans. The rest of the family probably won't think anything at all about what you are wearing. My granddaughter did ask for the wide jeans for her birthday from American Eagle. There is no way I could wear the wide ones and I much prefer my pull on old lady jeans.
Machka ~ Happy Anniversary! We will have our 55th on Monday. Probably won't celebrate because I have PT that afternoon. Then on Wed. we will go to a Japanese Restaurant to celebrate grand daughter's 13th BD. I don't like the food there but the family thinks it's their favorite place. I would be happy with pizza. LOL
Kylia ~ Hope your DH's mood is better today. It's funny how badly our spouses mood can turn our day upside down. When that happens here I spend the day wondering WHY?

pip - they are both cute on you! I hope offerup or marketplace work out for you. Do you ever use FB or nextdoor to sell things? I am getting a collection of some of my mom's stuff I don't want and wondered which of all the sites is best.

I also posted it on Nextdoor. Facebook marketplace is quite posted it too. I’ve sold a lot of stuff. Most buyers have come from OfferUp.
These dresses do still fit but what’s the use of having them if you don’t have the place to wear them to, lolol3 -

Morning, my dears,
Hope the weekend is treating you well.
Happy anniversary Machka, to you and Rowan! Hope it is/was a lovely celebration for you both.
Heather - It sounds just wonderful, one of those relaxed and lovely family affairs. That kind of laughter and love all in one place will truly be one of the grands' best memories of these years. So pleased for you all to have that time together.
Not my best morning, but far from my worst this week. Trying to stay still a little, let the pain pills work. Hope this afternoon to drive around and check out a couple acres of land in various places. We're thinking of buying a piece of land and paying it off while Corey's still working, and then slowly building out the house that we want over the next few years, with no driving need to move into it until we're ready.
It's still very much in the contemplating stage. We do like it here, and will probably stay, but the land is more than we need here at this house, and building new appeals to both of us for one final house. Still very much in the thinking stages at this point. A lot of what we do want and don't want now has been shaped by the six years we've lived in this house.
Here's to another day of caring for ourselves and the ones we love, dealing with our lives with as much joy and laughter as we can find, and keeping each other sane.
Love,
Lisa in AR

Beth - I was just thinking we hadn't heard from you in a while and maybe you were busy getting your mom moved and settled in. Hooray! Sounds like a very nice place, what a relief for everyone that she'll be better cared for.
Rosemarie - great to read you have a lot of happy things going on in your life. I've been meaning to ask you, did you pick up any good tips at the yoga retreat? I also noticed the wide leg pants coming back in. Not for me either. Seems jeans are worn to nearly all functions these days whereas when we were kids, our moms and grandmothers wore dresses. Times change.
Kylia - hope your DH is in a better mood today and hope the banquet this evening goes smoothly!
Pip - you look fabulous in those dresses, what a supermodel! All of your hard work through the years has really paid off.
Machka - Happy anniversary!
Carol - I'm with you on old lady jeans. I realize I don't wear them out like I used to since I quit working, plus I spend more time in sweats. So getting something comfortable wins out over stylish. Happy Anniversary!
Annie - glad Teddy had a good vet visit and the sitter worked out well. Happy to see your worry lessened a bit. I was raised every meal was at the table, TV off. I tried hard to implement that after I was married, my DH would go for it a few times then carry his food into the living room and eat from the coffee table in front of the TV. Stains on the rug to prove it.
Your comment about shoe recommendations are exactly why I prefer buying shoes in a store, with a well - educated employee for guidance. Customer service yesterday was lacking. Two employees, both ignored me as I wandered around for 5 minutes then finally asked one for help. He must have been brand new, he finally got the older gal to help who was working in the back room. Every other time I'd been in the store, I had someone at my side from the minute I walked in the door.
Heather - loved hearing about that family meal. Nice to get everyone together like that, it had been a while for you. A milestone and testament to your healing.
I wonder if we'll hear from Barbara this weekend? KJ? Hope everyone is doing well.
Lisa - always exciting to look at land and plan and dream of building the perfect house. Looking back, some of the best times DH and I had together were doing just that. We bought the land but didn't make it any farther due to his illness. So now, it's an investment the tax man likes to remind me of every February.
Have a great weekend!

Machka ... Happy Anniversary! My husband and I celebrated our 40th anniversary on Aug. 11th!
Carol ... dark and tiny seems to be common in a lot of facilities. One of the reasons I wanted my mom in this current facility is because it features a "household" concept rooted in the philosophies of the "Eden Alternative" and "Green House" models. The great room has floor to ceiling windows looking out on Lake Erie, there's a kitchen on each floor where the residents can smell the aromas of the meals being prepared and the dining area and halls are all kept light light and bright and designed to reflect a home-like atmosphere (as much as you can in a remodeled hospital). A lot of the residents have specifically made their rooms dark but that's a choice. My mom's room ... like her former home ... is being kept light with sheer curtains on the window, her prized artwork (which are light pieces) on the walls, photos, etc.
Plan today is to get some housework done and then visit with my mom for a while. Still going every day but will slowly back down to 3 times a week as she gets adjusted.

My food was bad all day yesterday, so no food picture today. I wanted to take a day off and celebrate DH’s b-day which is really on Tuesday the 27th. I did, and now back to accountable. I figure 1 day won’t hurt as I believe in the ‘no bad food’ just amounts, so back on track today.
I am working the pay booth all day again today. Next weekend, Labor Day Weekend, should be the last (at least I think so anyway!). I will do Silver Sneaker exercises, yoga, and Duolingo in between cars. It was slow last week, should be about the same this week. Labor Day will be busy. Whatever happens, happens…. I’m no soothsayer! Lol. I’ll take whatever comes and do my best with it.

Kim - thank you, I'll check it out. I went to the New Balance Outlet this morning - evidently this particular model - 1080 - is one of their most popular. Hardly any on the shelf of ANY size. I'm a 9 1/2 D (wide). I'm not choosy about colors.

Whew! ... I am finally caught up and, as usual, you have all been busy! I know I will forget someone, but here's what I remember ....
Rita ... does your husband reduce the number of portions he makes when he cooks? You have so much variety in your meals. Like the cheesy potatoes. I have a recipe for that but it would make 12-15 servings. Do you have a lot of leftovers? I think you do great too with taking ownership of your health.
Beth near Buffalo
Yes. My DH never uses recipes and cooks by smell/taste. He has reduces the portion sizes to fit what we eat. Sometimes just a little left over, so I may have it for supper, but mostly, he gets it right. He doesn’t measure either! I don’t know how it does it! I need to measure everything. It irks him that I have measuring cups and spoons that I use when taking portions, or cooking my breakfast and supper (he does dinner).

My dinner before my eating went south. That’s a lamb chop and chicken pot pie. I ate it all!

I guess another way for me to look at it. It is not refined sugar and refined starch fault it messes up my insulin levels to the detriment of my health. It is not their fault they are calorie rich and nutrient poor. Being calorie rich and nutrient poor is also true for seed oil. They were processed that way because they do not spoil, and they are addictive. Perhaps that is why the big cigarette companies bought some of the food companies. According to Robert Lustig he does not even classify them as foods because you gain no health benefits for your body from eating them. I no longer choose to eat them if possible knowing the effect they have on me.
The talk last night was on the health of your colon and intestinal track. They discussed for some individuals adding more fiber causes gas and bloating, so those who are affected are likely to give up adding more fiber. What could be going on is that the gut itself is inflamed . Calming the gut down comes first. SIBO is an inflamed small intestine. Adding fiber until that is addressed is difficult. Dr. Davis who wrote Wheat Belly has a yogurt recipe he uses for his patients if he figures out they have this condition. Crohns disease and irritable bowel are other diseases that make it difficult to add fiber to your diet. If any of these sound like you finding the right health care provided to calm the inflammation and rebuild your gut may be the way to go. Hopefully they do it through change of diet and adding the right probiotics you need and not steroids. Steroids will not get to the root cause.
Others speakers reminded where bitters play in the diet. Bitters help wake up your digestion process bile, enzymes.. to do their job in digesting your food. Bitters are foods like coffee (no sugar or cream sorry) Argula, dandelions...Online I found all kinds of tinctures. I guess bitters can be classified as warm and cool. Still learning more about that distinction. It just reminds I need to try to eat a bitter food or take my tincture about ten minutes before I start my meal.3 -
I got my trickle charger plugged in. Yay! I was afraid to mess with the battery but I finally faced it. Now the cord is hanging over the trash cans, but I can improve that.
Annie in Delaware7 -
Beth, congratulations on finding a place for your mother. It sounds perfect.
Kim, what a nightmare! I cannot imagine the frustration. I wish I had a magic wand to make it all better.
Jeans, I prefer a bootcut jean with a dark wash and no distressing. The brand I wear is very comfortable for my body. During the summer, though, I am a skort girl all the way. I have been known to wear my dressier ones to church. I tend to stick to workout leggings and long sweatshirts in the cooler months around the house. Jeans are too heavy for walking and we tend to go for frequent, short walks throughout the day. It’s just easier. I save my jeans for shopping, errands, bridge, etc.
I enjoy reading about all the different eating plans that we follow. I also enjoy the fact that no one tries to convince the rest of us that their plan is the “only” one. Barbie’s analogy is a good and wise one. I personally, follow a plan that most closely aligns with Mediterranean if you were to compare it to the popular “diets” out there. The only difference is that I do rely on protein powders and collagen supplements to meet my protein goals, because I do not enjoy large amounts of meat and eggs. I recognized that for me, I need the protein to combat sugar & carb cravings, so I use the powder - either a smoothie or a protein coffee, sometimes both, sometimes a protein pudding or an Oikos pro.5 -

Thanks friend! It is quite a project! Last night I was glad to not have heartburn and take my nightly Tums, but my stomach was achy all night. I just kept thinking, "feeling hungry isn't an emergency, this will pass".
Glad your Teddy had a good vet visit.🤗. Going out to dinner is always fun in my book! Good job leaving a tad, I did the same with my huge taco salad (in a serving bowl which annoys the snot out of husband). What else should I use to toss everything nicely? Then get ANOTHER bowl to serve my own self? That's crazy thoughts there!

the part about the brother happened 10 yrs ago, the day after he died, the part about never wanting him, she said that last week but his dad told him that is how she felt back when he was 14yrs old.
She tells everyone she has no one, no one to help her. Just her and her little dog- with dh sitting right there next to her.3 -

Rita - thank you, I did look them up on Amazon. The "model" is on the outside of tongue on the shoe, just under where I tie them, it says Fresh Foam 1080.
The ones I have on are V12 (I still had the shoebox) and I'm not sure about the V13, what the changes are. I don't want anything with a higher sole.
Nothing available at Amazon in my size except for white ones in V12, around $10 more than the store = close to $170. I paid $129.99 this past February.
Letting the pot soak for now. I have 2 pairs of size 9 1/2, B (regular) width in my Imelda Marcos walking shoe collection. One pair slightly worn, the other brand new. Plus the older pair of NB's, 9B. When my right foot isn't kicking up like it was this spring, B width might be comfortable so I'm kind of in wait and see right now.
Besides, I'm getting decision fatigue.
But I appreciate everyone's input. Thank you ladies!

(((Betth))) I am so glad you found a much better place for your mom. Sigh of relief!
Talked to a friend today and she reminded me that if I want to add more beans to my diet to do it slowly. Start with a tablespoon. Add a little bet more each day. It is a good way to add any new food or food that gives you problems. Eliminate for a while then add back in slowly especially if there was an underlying issue that prevented enjoying food in the first place. She also gave me the idea to make Chia pudding from the little left over milk I have from making yogurt the last time. I can add fruit and no sugar. If I make pudding the recipe I have calls for added sugar.4 -
I chatted to G for a while this morning, but kept being interrupted by yelps, as her back was twingeing.
This afternoon, I phoned L at a prearranged time, and we chatted for over an hour. The power breakdown, while she was on holiday, and the mouldy fridge/freezer has been a bit of a nightmare, but she thinks the mouldy smell is beginning to retreat. She has every kind of odour absorbing stuff in there, including cut up lemons.
For dinner I used up most of the leftover chicken, in a lentil curry, with fresh spinach. I did a raita. The last of the chicken will go in a lunchtime ciabatta tomorrow. Dinner will be mushroom risotto.
I don't know if any of you have read the Robert Harris books. I am currently reading An Officer and a Spy, about the Dreyfus affair. It was 99p on Kindle. His best was Pompeii. What I really admire about him is the pageturnability of his novels. I would love to understand how he does it! A rare gift.
It's a Bank Holiday weekend here. Luckily, the family are leaving for the airport tomorrow at 4 a m , so they should miss the traffic. Stansted Airport is North of London, so a longish drive. I don't envy them, getting up at 2.45.
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx3 -
