Good morning beautiful ladies!
Thank you all for being in my pocket as I worried about Teddy. I am so happy his heart is stable.
Rita I make overnight oats every day for lunch. It suits me to eat first, then assemble it for the next day. The oats need to be "old fashioned" otherwise they are cut too small and turn to mush.
1/2 cup oats
1 cup almond milk ( makes soft oatmeal)
1 scoop protein powder
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
Stir then add
1/2 cup blueberries
I wash them but am careful not to add water.
My protein powder is sweet so it doesn't need honey but yours may differ.
Kylia glad the banquet turned out well! Yay!
Lisa I write out checks for Dad to sign, and find it tricky to stop from signing them myself.
Lynn welcome! We are a friendly bunch, jump right in! The only limit is that we don't discuss religion or politics because that tends to be controversial. And we respect each other's diet methods. So let us know what you are doing and how it works for you!
Machka glad you are coloring again. Yay!
Allie yes we love the pics of Miles!
Michele boy that oven has taken forever! Sounds like PJ could use some extra loving kindness, but that's true of us all.
Dad doesn't hear, and he makes noise wherever he goes. I keep the TV off. I just heard him shut his door and come downstairs. It's useful to know where he is.
He is very thankful, which helps balance some of the awkward things he says. His view of women reflects his age.
So I have gotten my to do list down to the less urgent items. I have no excuse to skip that bike. I will do it today!
Have a lovely day! May you all be happy, healthy, safe and free!

Hi everyone! My name is Lynn and I live in Kansas. I've been on and off of MFP but I'm back on. I was disappointed they did away with the newsfeed. Had supportive women on there. We'll back to it! Have a great day!
Hi, Lynn, hope you're able to drop back in and find some of the support you're looking for here with this group. Barbie re-starts the thread for us each month, giving us a blank slate to write to each other and to share our own paths to bodily and mental health. We're glad you're here. Drop right in to any conversation, and welcome!
Regards,
Lisa in Arkansas (just around the corner from you!)5 -
Machka asked Michelle: What was the best part of visiting your daughter?
Michelle: I have the same question. It seems like the few times y'all have visited, nothing is to your satisfaction. Have you thought of bringing a restaurant meal to enjoy with the family? That way Denise would not have to cook. And, if the house is that messy, could you possibly help get it straightened up. It looks like Denise does not have the necessary skills to accomplish these things.
I know that you are so good about helping folks in your community and making meals etc. for those you encounter so please don't take what I mentioned in the wrong way.
My son and daughter-in-law and their two children have a messy house and never invite us up mainly because they are so busy with sports and work. I have finally gotten to the point when they stop by to visit, I just make sure the toilet and sink in the bathroom is clean. Other than that, I quit worrying about it. This is totally against my old nature but is probably an improvement all around.
Carol in GA
Agreed.
Some people are just fairly comfortable living in a mess. I might prefer something neater, but to each their own. It's also why I will usually stay in a hotel. But, as you say, Michelle could ask if Denise would like some help with the dishes, laundry or something.
Some people (like me) don't cook. If you come here, you'll get something but it probably won't be brilliant. In fact, I'm much more likely to suggest we go to a restaurant or order a pizza. Carol, I think you've got a great suggestion that Michelle should order dinner in for the family.
I think most people don't have guests and don't do dinner anymore. It's not a thing these days. Whatever skills were involved in dinner parties disappeared back in the early 1990s.
Michelle, don't you go there to enjoy your grandson? Just enjoy him for who he is. Don't diagnose him ... play with him, find out what he likes, make good memories with him.

Woot! Good Monday morning, my chickens...
Hope it was a grand weekend, and that the week is lovely for everyone.
Here's a question for you - why is it so much harder to spend money on ourselves than it is to spend it on someone else? Going down the hill in a little bit to get glasses ordered, and had to convince myself at length to do it. All the needlework of late is really showing how scratched up and beat up my glasses are, and need replacing.
Anyway, other than the usual Monday chores...
My Monday morning weigh-in - At 157.5 this morning... When I began the five-day stint with the booster diuretic to get my edema settled down, on August 9, I was at 167.8. There was one really rough day in there, but I dropped ten pounds of water off by last Monday, and I'm slightly lighter than that as of this morning.
I am feeling incredibly smug (sorry... but still) because I've managed to track my food for two straight weeks now! Every day -- every drop, every crumb, since August 13. It's really helping me see where my calories were coming from. I'm very gently trying to stay around 1450 calories a day or less - slowly ooch back down to around 145 if my body will cooperate, but mostly, just pay attention to what's going in my mouth, rather than eating mindlessly. It was oddly easy to drop back into... not sure what to think about that!
Now to also very gently add a little exercise in - I was on the elliptical ten minutes each day this weekend. Doesn't sound like much, but it's a whole lot better than nothing.
Now that the healthy portion of this program is over, and Corey just called to say "good morning," I'm going to swan off and get a few things done and take a shower so I don't offend the person who gets my glasses ordered... 👀😝🤣
Later, y'all,
Love,

I'm all about spending money on myself!!
Although recently I have decided that I've probably got enough stuff, so I've started buying for my husband and granddaughter.

Machka - If I ever knew anyone who deserved to spend money on herself, it's you... It was on my mind because I ordered yarn to make afghans for my nephew and his wife with only a little bit of thought ahead of time, but agonized over getting glasses. I think I still feel like I'm "spending Corey's money," rather than my own - which is not true, we are genuinely united on the financial front, and indeed, he convinced me to go and get the new glasses ordered. Strange dynamic in play there... but nonetheless, I'm going to go get them.
Michele - Not to pile on, but I'd love to see you taking a little of Machka's advice, and finding the joy that's there to find in your time with your grandson. You may not think your disapproval and disdain for Pete, for PJ's behavior, for the environment, and for the accommodations they make for you comes through loud and clear, but I can tell you from experience that you're wrong. Denise knows how you feel - she grew up with you. She knows, and PJ knows that neither one of you is comfortable with the other without knowing why.
Probably shouldn't say it - just really hate to see you lose something that you can keep by reining in the judgment and ramping up the love.

Lanette- I don't mind pork, but my body really doesn't like it. I would be fighting Lisa for the bathroom and reaching for migraine meds. I can't eat Turkey because of migraines. I do limit beef only because I don't always feel good after eating it. So I eat a lot of chicken! Both before and after hatched-lol! I do eat seafood and some fish but don't cook them.

I have a similar reaction to meat.
I've never liked pork and am not overly fond of beef. They give me heartburn and an upset stomach.
I'm not convinced that most meat is good for us, and especially not for my kidneys.
And processed meat, including ham, is particularly bad for us. That said, I do like pepperoni on my pizza once a week.

I also eat poultry and a bit of fish.

I am kind of the same. Lee will make a steak and though I sometimes use the same pan to toss some veggies in, I rarely have steak. I buy the thin pork chops and toss them in a sweet band spicy mixture and bake them. Lee loves them but I am like "meh". I do love roasted chivken, and a lot of seafood!

I thought I would weigh in on the discussion of kids, their homes and how we do things. I think my saving grace during my 2 week stay with my middle sons family was to "concentrate on the good". I was " fetched" by son and granddaughter to be the babysitter until they found one. I kept the kids fed, safe and healthy, and poured as much love on them as they let me. I didn't cook one nightly meal, them feeding me was my reward. I didn't clean their home, but kept my things organized. They didn't need me for my cleaning skills, plus as I told husband on the phone, "I need to conserve my energy"! To attempt to clean their garsge, well I wouldn't have been able to play with and chase around the 11 month old grandson. Pick and choose what we want to take away from each and every visit we have with family. The ball is in our court and we can decide.💖👍🏼

(((Michele))) It is so hard to see your loved ones in that kind of state. Praying Pete receives the right kind of help. Praying for your daughter to find a way to put herself first so she can help your grandson. Prayers for turning their overwhelmed and stressful lifestyle (that is what all the junk and video game addiction indicates) to a healthier home. I think what upsets you the most is to see your daughter and grandson living in such unhealthy conditions. It is a mothers reaction and valid!!! You know your daughter needs help and you don't know how to help her. All you can do right now is encourage her to find ways to help herself and that you are there for her.
The topic of yesterdays talk was stress and the negative effect it can have on health. You can do everything else right and it can be derailed by stress. They went over tools that you can use to help...meditation, yoga, breathing, singing, getting out in nature. One of the speakers discussed finding some kind of happiness or gratitude everyday even in the midst of the worst moments. (Reminds me of Barbie)...the importance of finding calm even for a few moments to help reset your vagus nerves. The problem if you live in chronic stress your vagus nerve does not work properly. You can get stuck in flight or fight (reactive) or freeze patterns (playing video games all day). We need our periods of rest and relaxation. Having fun and laughing makes it even better.
Moment of Zen today...Some Flamingos with petunias from the garden in a heart shaped vase given to me by a student years ago. Enjoy🌹

Lisa- logging sure helps us get the big picture, and sounds like it's paying off for you. Great job! I had been been steadily logging for the past 6 months or so - to ensure I'm hitting the macros (lower carbs, higher protein) but also to remind me what I like to eat when nothing looks good, lol. The diabetes prevention program pushes logging, which is something new for many of my classmates and is beneficial.
But lately, I've been slacking a bit in the logging department. I think the "plate" is becoming more ingrained. As we've mentioned here before, if we pay attention to the nutrition, the calories often take care of themselves. I thought I ate plenty of veggies, but now, I'm much more aware and intend to make sure I have some with most meals.
Rita - I keep thinking of that powerful "self talk" list you posted yesterday. I still beat myself up a little when I don't achieve what I planned to in the exercise department, but I'm starting to tell myself that even ten minutes on the elliptical (I sound like Lisa ) is much better than doing nothing. I have "Hey Googoo" set a timer and grab a book or watch a video.
Not sure how much walking I'll get in today - formerly broken toe is achy for some reason this morning, blast it. . Weather change or something. I'll swap out shoes and see if that helps.
I've been watching "My 600 Pound Life" on Discovery+.I'm intrigued by reasons why people overeat and why some of them become morbidly obese. What jumped out yesterday - very bossy, critical and judgmental parents, spouses, other relatives and friends. So food had been these patients' only solace for a while. And the criticizers were sometimes the enablers.
One episode I watched featured a new wife, fairly obese herself. So much so, that Dr. Now told her husband, his patient, that with her weight problem it might be hard for him to stay on his diet. She was incensed and told her husband that if he returned to Dr. Now for the skin removal surgery, she'd leave him. He did as she demanded. My heart broke for him that he was so fragile and lonely, he was willing to give up his dream to please her, and I wanted to shake her for using a threat like that because of her own insecurity. She did appear to be supportive of his diet and weight loss efforts, but Dr. Now's comment triggered something in her.
Was Dr. Now wrong to make this comment in front of her? Did he sense something in her that he felt might jeopardize his patient's long term success? I'm not sure. The show ended. Perhaps she cooled off and he was able to get the skin removal done by Dr. Now or a local plastic surgeon. Maybe she decided to follow his diet and lose weight herself.
I recall hurtful comments from my dad and my DH - certainly not to that extent - but where judgment and advice for my weight "problem" (which really wasn't at the time!!) didn't help and I let it batter my self confidence, and backfired since I turned to food - and junk food at that - even more.
I think I have a line-up of people that needed shaking. Many of us probably do. But, I've forgiven them and myself. I realize they had their own demons they were trying to deal with and they let it spill over. I'm sure I did that to others as well.
Now for something completely different. Are any of you curious about storms, especially lightning strikes in your state or country? Many of us here give little weather reports, and I sometimes look up weather for your regions. I ran across this website for real-time lightning strikes. Kind of fun to see what's happening in various parts of the world.

On that note, have a grand week!
