(((Michele))) It is so hard to see your loved ones in that kind of state. Praying Pete receives the right kind of help. Praying for your daughter to find a way to put herself first so she can help your grandson. Prayers for turning their overwhelmed and stressful lifestyle (that is what all the junk and video game addiction indicates) to a healthier home. I think what upsets you the most is to see your daughter and grandson living in such unhealthy conditions. It is a mothers reaction and valid!!! You know your daughter needs help and you don't know how to help her. All you can do right now is encourage her to find ways to help herself and that you are there for her.
The topic of yesterdays talk was stress and the negative effect it can have on health. You can do everything else right and it can be derailed by stress. They went over tools that you can use to help...meditation, yoga, breathing, singing, getting out in nature. One of the speakers discussed finding some kind of happiness or gratitude everyday even in the midst of the worst moments. (Reminds me of Barbie)...the importance of finding calm even for a few moments to help reset your vagus nerves. The problem if you live in chronic stress your vagus nerve does not work properly. You can get stuck in flight or fight (reactive) or freeze patterns (playing video games all day). We need our periods of rest and relaxation. Having fun and laughing makes it even better.

Lisa- logging sure helps us get the big picture, and sounds like it's paying off for you. Great job! I had been been steadily logging for the past 6 months or so - to ensure I'm hitting the macros (lower carbs, higher protein) but also to remind me what I like to eat when nothing looks good, lol. The diabetes prevention program pushes logging, which is something new for many of my classmates and is beneficial.
But lately, I've been slacking a bit in the logging department. I think the "plate" is becoming more ingrained. As we've mentioned here before, if we pay attention to the nutrition, the calories often take care of themselves. I thought I ate plenty of veggies, but now, I'm much more aware and intend to make sure I have some with most meals.
Rita - I keep thinking of that powerful "self talk" list you posted yesterday. I still beat myself up a little when I don't achieve what I planned to in the exercise department, but I'm starting to tell myself that even ten minutes on the elliptical (I sound like Lisa ) is much better than doing nothing. I have "Hey Googoo" set a timer and grab a book or watch a video.
Not sure how much walking I'll get in today - formerly broken toe is achy for some reason this morning, blast it. . Weather change or something. I'll swap out shoes and see if that helps.
I've been watching "My 600 Pound Life" on Discovery+.I'm intrigued by reasons why people overeat and why some of them become morbidly obese. What jumped out yesterday - very bossy, critical and judgmental parents, spouses, other relatives and friends. So food had been these patients' only solace for a while. And the criticizers were sometimes the enablers.
One episode I watched featured a new wife, fairly obese herself. So much so, that Dr. Now told her husband, his patient, that with her weight problem it might be hard for him to stay on his diet. She was incensed and told her husband that if he returned to Dr. Now for the skin removal surgery, she'd leave him. He did as she demanded. My heart broke for him that he was so fragile and lonely, he was willing to give up his dream to please her, and I wanted to shake her for using a threat like that because of her own insecurity. She did appear to be supportive of his diet and weight loss efforts, but Dr. Now's comment triggered something in her.
Was Dr. Now wrong to make this comment in front of her? Did he sense something in her that he felt might jeopardize his patient's long term success? I'm not sure. The show ended. Perhaps she cooled off and he was able to get the skin removal done by Dr. Now or a local plastic surgeon. Maybe she decided to follow his diet and lose weight herself.
I recall hurtful comments from my dad and my DH - certainly not to that extent - but where judgment and advice for my weight "problem" (which really wasn't at the time!!) didn't help and I let it batter my self confidence, and backfired since I turned to food - and junk food at that - even more.
I think I have a line-up of people that needed shaking. Many of us probably do. But, I've forgiven them and myself. I realize they had their own demons they were trying to deal with and they let it spill over. I'm sure I did that to others as well.
Now for something completely different. Are any of you curious about storms, especially lightning strikes in your state or country? Many of us here give little weather reports, and I sometimes look up weather for your regions. I ran across this website for real-time lightning strikes. Kind of fun to see what's happening in various parts of the world.

I love these two quotes~ especially the last one. I get depressed so easy. I practice stopping my negative self talk then changing my thoughts. Although yesterday and today I’ve gotten to feeling very depressed. Not sure why, nothing new or different happened, it just started. IDK

The family arrived safely in Croatia yesterday and had a fabulous day today. 😀 I followed the flight on my app, and they touched down 15 mins early.
It's a great break for my son, because he doesn't have to cook! I hope he can leave work behind. Weather looks excellent for their 10 days.
Michele - Like Margaret, I can feel your frustration and fear around your daughter’s life. It sounds miserable. Unfortunately, we cannot do anything about it, until they are ready themselves, which is so sad. Just show her all the love you can. When she needs you, you can be there to support her.
We can lead a horse to water, but we can't make them drink. Ditto my book again.
Those that have ears to hear, let them hear.
Most of us are pretty well deaf.

Lisa I get the money spending and dhs. When I started this relationship, I came with responsibilities and debt. I was diligent in not asking him for assistance. His money and my money. Maybe it is always needing to protect me, maybe it is trauma of earlier life, but I still pretty much feel the same way. Yet, he has gotten more lax about those boundaries. By that I mean he shares more now with very little conflict. He has even gotten better when I spend my money on me. It usually was a struggle. My brother and sister are more like Corey....they don't understand my reluctance to totally merge our finances.
A little food "porn" of my own. This makes me happy! Crunchy, fresh, and colorful!
Can't concentrate today. The positive is I have had lots of water to drink and only one cookie and two turtles(dark chocolate) along with bites of above and several bites of venison tenderloin. I have been nibbling all day. Oh well, mainly good for me
Lanette I totally forgot to weigh in! Went to bathroom to do that realized the kitty pan needed emptied, did that, mopped floor, emptied kitchen trash, took meds, came to work.....oops! But the kitties are happy

So, so happy this morning! I had closed my eating window at 6 pm last night, so waking up at 6:30 am I was almost 12 hours fasted already. Good way to start my day. Unfortunately it went a wee bit downhill from there! We got to the gym and I put my stuff in the electronic locks in the ladies. When I came out husband was right there stating the weight machines room had spring a leak in its ceiling from the rain we had over the weekend. So he said it's just the treadmill today. I go back into the locker area because I like to take my Pellegrino water, plus tablet and ear buds while walking. It took me a good 5 minutes of swearing to get the blasted thing open! I have been reading some lovely romantic vampire books, lol, so that is nice to walk to. I tried my normal machine but it kept going to the "resume or end" page. I went to a machine behind it and it was fine but started making an annoying squeek. I then switched to the machine next to it. In the end I got 25 minutes of walking because husband came by with a "I'm done" smile. I just figured he would tag on the time we usually lift weights onto his walking time and do 45 min. He is such a creature of habit. He does 30minutes and never strays! Well the point is find the good! My good was that I woke up at 6:30 am! I walked. I also made brownies for youngest sailor son this morning. I gave the batter bowl to husband and ordered him to take it away. Too easy to have a fingerfull.
My NSV this morning was that I tried on my black honesty pants that have been sitting in my closet for almost 2 years. I can put them up past my hips! Are they a wee bit tight? Kinda. The fabric is kind of stretchy. Anyways they are a size X1 or 18. What I was wearing yesterday was a 3X or 22. Do I kinda have a muffin top? Oh heck yes. But I wear shirts long to cover my apron thing. I shall wear these all day, gosh darn it. 😁
Today is a repeat performance of yesterday. 2 slices of papa johns pizza with a salad.👍🏼💖

MFP Weekly Check-In August 26, 2024
Rita in Roswell, NM – I was going to wait until tomorrow but decided to stick with Sunday weigh ins. Up 2 pounds from last week, BUT!!! Still down 11 pounds from my start weight of 186 and 35 pounds less than my all-time high of 210! Positive thinking!!
Debbie in Napa Valley, CA - weight same as last week. Glad to be out walking again.
Lanette SW WA State – Weight remaining stable. Able to retire some too baggy pants that were tight 6 months ago. Keeping up with morning stretches, back to lifting light weights a few times a week, some time on the elliptical. Number of steps way down from 6 months ago, but feet doing better so that’s a win.

Quick drop in this evening. Busy Monday at work. Came home needed to balance checkbook-to the penny like Rebecca! Then needed to pay some bills (medical stuff not cleared through insurance). That got me to my out of pocket and deductible for the year. Set up account for new PA practice. Lunch packed and logged for tomorrow. Trash to the curb. 30 minute walk inside. Am ready for bed!
No words of wisdom for anyone. It seems like we all have our struggles and our victories. While they may be different it helps me to know I am not alone with such things.
Tomorrow we are in another heat wave so Kylia and I will bake! Luckily I am indoors most of the day. Will leave work at 3:45 for haircut then home.

Hello, ladies; I missed you guys so much. I told my therapist about how inspirational every one of you is. I think it was Annie who said that she does a task that her husband does not do, and he gave his input on how to do it better. It made me wonder if all wives go through this. I know I do. I just had to chuckle at that. This week, I stayed away from the Manusha of work politics. My manager called me in again. I asked her, "What did I do this time?" She said nothing. She just wanted to inform me that I got a raise based on my performance in the review.
I am not allowed to disclose it to anyone. So, I told my husband I got a raise but don't know the amount . I stuck to it. What I got this morning was better than any raise. The baby boy I cared for smiled at me and patted my arm. I got to hold my gray/blue-eyed cherub(her eyes changed), and she loved the snuggle time and didn't want me to leave. Then my patient who has Down syndrome told me bye as a hint to leave. I held my hand and would not let go. His mom told me that he is attached to me now. My patients remind me why I am a nurse. My cherub is going home to her mom. I hope she will be okay and take care of her. She is so sweet.
Lastly, we talked about headaches so much last week that I had a patient with one who is 17. Hers is from falling off of a horse and getting kicked in the back of the head from him. She has a skull fracture and TBI. I tried to explain that she needed low stimulation and a cold room, cold drinks, and ice in the area. Controlling her pain was a difficult feat. I went over everything I do since this will be a continuing issue. I told her parents about the migraine teas, the cooling gel mask, and the diversion. Dad wants
opioids, but the doctors say that they do not work with these injuries. Sometimes, I feel we treat the parents more than the children.
Pip- all the hard work you are doing shows in those dresses. You should find a nice place to go to wear them. Go on a cruise.
Lisa, I will do my floors next week. I know it was your goal, and I thought it would be great if I could do that as well. I also need to start washing my son's linens. I hope all is well with you, and thank you for the great send-off. I had a fantastic stretch.
Kim, California is my home state, yet I don't know how things work. It has been a long since I worked for a doctor's office while in school, billing Medicare. I could ask my cousin or aunt who lives in Vallejo, California. I want to get your help or point you that way. My cousin is a social worker.
Rita, those meals you posted look delicious. Your hubby must love to cook.

Beth, Happy Belated Anniversary! It would be best if you wrote a book on how to make marriage last. Your 40 years of marriage are a testimony to your commitment and patience. My DH and I will celebrate 28 years in September. The place you set up for your mom sounds so tranquil.
Kylia, I get what you are saying. I could stay in my pajamas all day, and I do sometimes.
It is so hot in my bedroom, and my AC unit is not working. So I will close for now. I will chat tomorrow. Take care of everyone I missed today. Lanette, thanks for making me smile.

had to miss class tonight. As I was getting ready to go, one of the cats was acting really strange(like he was paranoid of everything around him). I am pretty sure he had just had a massive seizure. He wouldn't let me touch him or anything. He had another big one and kept having small then big ones then passed away in my arms. I tried giving him his CBD which have helped with his seizures in the past but not this time. I just held him for the last hour and a half until he passed. Peed on me as he did. Just came in from burying him. DH couldn't handle any of it- I was fine doing all of it. I am a lot calmer which is what Miso needed.
Dentist in the morning- not looking forward to that- removing a crown because there is a cavity under it- will get a temp. crown until the first of the year when our insurance resets. I will have to pay out of pocket for all of the work tomorrow but don't want to pay for the actual crown too.

Machka - I think if I were just worried about my meals I would have a lot less meat. We tend to have it almost daily, although I do get chicken in 2-3 times a week I think.
Rodger will eat seafood, I will not.
I agree, people don’t have dinner parties anymore it seems. We still do in our family, but mostly because it’s the least expensive way to get together.
Terri - I too am a pretty positive person, but I find my mood changes a lot with who I’m hanging around.
Carol - I have a daughter that is messy and one that has to have everything in order. I offer to help either of them whenever they may need it. My messy daughter has the Grands and a husband in a small area, I take the kids lots to give them all a break from one another. I care about them not their housekeeping.
Lisa - I need to order new glasses too. My glasses run close to $1000 because of the prescription I always get discounted frames. I was quite pleased to know that my benefits will cover $500 every two years.
I need to start logging again, so did today. I need to start making some changes.
Heather - I’m happy to see your family arrived safely. I know how it worries you to have them in the air.
On money - I have a vivid memory of my mother asking my father for $2 and him saying I just gave you $2 last week. This was probably in the early 80’s. I swore I would never ask a man for money. We have separate accounts and I tend to say my money and your money, this upsets DH because he is of the it’s our money belief. I have had to manage the money for a long time and for way too many years with him making little to no money for months on end. I resent it now and don’t know how to fix it. It’s a sore spot with me, but it’s also something I couldn’t loosen the grip on without going into panic if I needed something and had to ask him for money. Even all of this time I haven’t worked I have had an income albeit a small amount.

I met with my new manager today to ask what the plan is, we are going to have a meeting tomorrow to know who is doing what and I’m going to dive in. She goes on vacation next week for almost the whole month of September, I would like to get into the deep while she’s still here, so I know her expectations of me. I learn better just by diving in too.
I am up late and need to get to bed.

Monique-you seem to have a diversity of young patients. I agree at times we all need reminded why we do what we do.
Debbie-sorry to hear about Miso. About how old was she? Was there a specific cause of her seizures? I am asking since I have older cats and have no clue what to expect as they continue to age.
Tracey-Good luck with the deep dive. Sometimes it is best just to jump in.
Slept well last night. Doing stretches and getting ready for work. After moderating walking and stretches nearly daily I am seeing improvement with leg/foot. The strange leg issues have definitely improved which seems to be helping everything. The foot still hurts at times but not nearly like it was. I need to remember how extremely painful it was to motivate me to continue daily stretches.

I think this list is out of date and needs to be updated but I've been sitting well over 300 for the past 7 years.
Yale Medicine’s stress management recommendations include:- Exercising
- Eating healthy foods
- Learning time management techniques
- Setting realistic goals
- Getting more sleep
- Making time for leisure activities
- Building stress reduction skills
- Learning and practicing mindfulness (learning to control attention)
Even when the stress eases up a bit, I find it very hard to relax.
The colouring helps.
I really need to get back to exercising.

I haven’t taken notes so just know that I am reading along, with nothing much new to add to what has already been written by others.
It’s difficult to sit back when our adult children are struggling. We had a rough time with our youngest for a couple of years, (her relationship broke up) but we supported her through it, and a few other wobbles. You have to let them make their mistakes. Sometimes stepping in isn’t an option for various reasons, but they need to know you have their back.
Tracey: I can tell you’re champing at the bit to get into the job. I would be the same. In at the deep end. 😂

Pleased with self.
Decided at breakfast to take myself into Hove on the bus, so that I could have a look at the cushioned vinyl flooring and order it for my bathroom. If I don't do things first thing, they don't get done.
First time on the bus since the second op. I took my stick, as a signifier for the public, though I can shuffle along perfectly well without it. Bus driver helpful, cars stop etc etc. I got brought a seat in the carpet shop!
I had to wait a while as the owner was cancelling an order, but I chose a light oak herringbone while I was waiting. I wanted something that will go with the present paintwork, but will also go with any new colour I choose in the future. I think light wood goes with anything.
I got an approximate estimate, for the vinyl, the fitting, the removal of the present carpet and underlay, and disposal of such, but they decided they would come to estimate on Thursday afternoon, as they want to check the condition of the actual floor. It's normal in the UK to pay the fitters separately, when they come to do the job, in cash! We have used this family run company before and the fitters were amazing!
The walk to and from the bus stop was not too bad, and I was able to buy a few food bits on my way home past the deli. The owner was pleased to see me.
So, an accomplishment!
Can't wait to get the bus into Brighton and hobble around a shop or two.
John's cricket friend is coming over on Friday, to go to the Sussex ground in Hove. It's a decent journey from South London, so it's nice of him. I suggested we all meet up afterwards at Fatto a Mano, but his friend wants to get back. He will park in our drive and they will walk the 40 mins to the ground.
Plus, I get a day off, to eat my 'funny' food, and watch the recorded programmes that John doesn't like. :laugh:
I also may be meeting up, at the weekend, with an old friend, C, from decades ago. We met through our drama careers, and self-development workshops that we attended. We taught several weekend workshops together, of our own devising, which were a great success, called things like, "The Creative Express", involving dance, mime, acting, art etc. She is a trained drama therapist and currently teaches self confidence classes. If we do manage to get together, it will be quite a strange experience! She is 68. Six years younger than me.
