It seems most of the people within the Fasting message boards are concentrating on toning at this point and have already lost their mass of weight. Anyone lost a good deal using the IF plan?
I'd like to know that too.0 -

I'll let you know in a few weeks! I am doing this for discipline and to try and change my eating habits and to LOSE FAT. I find it much easier to say
"I am forbidden to eat the 16 hours between 8 pm and 12 pm"
than to say
"I am forbidden to eat ice cream and pie".0 -

Hi all, I'm starting 16/8 from leangains today.
Question, I take a 13 calorie fish oil capsule every morning, that's probably OK, right? But what if I want a few tablespoons of soy in my coffee or tea? Is that too many calories during a fast time period?
Martin says that as long as those calories are minimal, under 50 total, then it wouldn't be considered as breaking the fast. Just make sure that these remain very minimal.0 -

I had been on a platue with wieghtloss when I started IF in late June. At that point I had lost about 19 pounds, but had been stuck for the better part of 2 months. Since June 20th when I started IF I have lost 31 pounds, and I hardly lost anything during August as I spent much of the month on vacation not eating clean as much, working out as much, or religiously doing IF.
During this time I've also trended towards a Paleo type diet, as I've been eating a lot more veggies and more fat. I've also been working out less that last 6 weeks, and I've been losing very well (14 pounds in 6 weeks). It's a bit hard to determine which of the changes I'm made have had what effect, but the overall outcome has been quite good. I can say that the convenience of the 16/8 approach has allowed me to consistantly stay under my calorie goal while not feeling hungry, which may well be the biggest benefit of the leangains approach.0 -
I made it 14 hours today!! and broke my fast with some not so healthy food!! I was in a bad mood cause I spilt hazelnut coffee all over myself and my work. So I broke my fast at 14 hours with a junior chicken and half of a small fries at McDonalds0

How did everyone do today and what did you eat? How long is your 'overeating phase'?
white/choc pb proats
snack: jerky & carrots
dinner: chilli choc steak & veggies
after: pumpkin ice cream.
Pumpkin ice cream ohhhhhh yum! Have you tried Dairy Queens pumpkin blizzard? I also plan to go as close to the 16/8 fast as I can in the morning. The thing is I get up early to workout (not today as kids are home from school) but usually at 5 am and "they" say to eat right after working out then shorten the meals in the hours furthest from workingout. How are you doing this?
There's been a furvor lately behind the idea that not eating after excercise is actually a perfered method. There's a couple of "experts" out there that promote the idea that you should get some protien (or BCAA's) post workout, and then not eat for at least a few hours. The idea being that your metabolism is in high gear after excercise, so by not eating you're letting it burn through fat. The leangains model where you train fasted, and don't break the fast for hours after, may end up being a method that is preferable. I don't think there's any study's to back that concept up yet, but we'll see.0 -
Question for those of you who have been do IF daily. When you are sick do you continue to do IF or put it aside until you are back up to par? I've got a little bit of a cold and running a low grade fever and a few aches and pains. Eating seems to help me feel better and make it thru the day.0

Out of the whole day that won't matter so much. Just eat healthy the rest of the day and stay within your goal. I forgot to reply to you saying that BCAA's are Branched Chain Amino Acids. I could only do 14 hours as well. It would have been like 16 if I hadn't snacked right before bed...lol. See we alllll do it!0 -

Thankyou! That's what I have always thought even before hearing anything about IF. I always wondered why everyone said eat eat eat other than your body will burn the postworkout cals right away instead of storing them as fat.0 -

Actually. Now my mom is pretty Holistic but growing up I never ate, I only had liquids when i was sick. She always said you don't want to feed the virus but kill it. Nowadays I still do this because I grew up with it and it always worked but I also take probiotics in pill form. But that's just me...someone else might have an opinion.0 -

Where do you get BCAA? a health food store?0 -
You may be able to find well priced BCAAs online. bodybuilding.com is a good site. I used purple wraath and liked it.0

Novice ie stupid question
what is the difference between the lean gains and the ESE methods?
has anyone tried both and found much difference in results?
and do you have to do fasted workouts? I have 4 kids and work fulltime so really cant workout until around 4pm most days apart from weekends. however the intermittent fasting appeals to me as i naturally seem to eat the bulk of my food between 1 and 9pm0 -

Yes I was just going to look online like the poster above this reply. I usually get my BCAAs in my whey protein shake but going to try what was advised earlier.0 -

Not sure. Well actually leangains is the ESE. I would look up on www.leangains.com and he describes the few different IFs. You don't "have to" do your workouts in the fasted state but it is the most beneficial.0 -

ESE is a once or twice a week 24 hour fast methodology, while leangains is a 16/8 (or so) daily fast cycle. On page 5 of this thread I gave a link to an article from this week written by a long time trainer who tried multiple IF models and reviewed them. Check it out.
Also, you don't have to train fasted. I typically break my fast at lunch, and don't workout until 6pm. I just make sure I eat the bulk of my calories post workout. Check out leangains.com for more info. The approach I follow is to eat 2 meals before workout (20% daily calories each) then one or two meals post workout (60% of daily calories total).0 -

Thanks I am reading it now.0 -
re fish oil/coffee. martin has said that a tspn of skim milk in coffee is ok. I personally wait until my first meal to take my fish oil (as I take 5ml).
skinnyfat14: if it fits your macros BCAA's people recommend are xtend apparently. I get different ones in Australia.
pork_belly: Haven't been sick enough to cut it out. If you feel better with food, I would eat. When I was injured and couldn't train properly I dropped the IF for a bit.
re eating after training: It's because exercise is catabolic in nature. It's not until you feed it that it becomes anabolic. Also, it is recommended to eat your largest meal of the day after working out but once again if you prefer not to then you don't have to e.g. midday workout but want to eat a large dinner with family.
Re fasted workouts: definitely not required. Beneficial possibly but definitely not required. I do them once a week because of my schedule and it has worked fine for me. Martin put up the fasted training protocol because there are so many people that workout in the morning but didn't want to start their eating window until around lunchtime.
And just because it's awesome. Read this if you haven't already.

Thanks chrisdavey, I'll have to take a look for those.
I woke up early today and did 35 minutes on the treadmill and I feel soooo hungry now. I'm sure it's normal though. I usually feel hungry around the 12 hour mark but I started my fast a little earlier last night so the 12 hr mark is now. I guess I'm just not use to being this hungry so early but I did stop eating earlier. 4 more hours to go!!0 -

Yes, it's been 12 hours and I'm hungry and actually tired because I haven't eaten I'm sure. Today is my light training day if anything so I think I can do this until 1:00. yikes that sounds so far away.0 -

Wow that's impressive that you waited from 10:30 to 4 to eat the cheesecake!! Hopefully I can have that strength on friday. My coworker is going to bring in some of her wedding cake! 2.5 hours for me to go0 -

Yes, seems like forever. I did a few toning excercises and it actually helped my hunger. Some simple things without weight. I'm in Indiana and its 9:49 am...3 more long hours.0 -

Well I went 14 1/2 hours. if I hadn't had a small snack at 9:00 pm my last meal was at 5:30. I might try to stop eating at 7:00 tonight so i can go to 11:00 like I did today. BUT check my diary and you'll see I had a very healthy lunch.0

I have found that after a short period of time doing IF, the fasts become quite easy. I was a breakfast eater for my entire life, and now I don't miss it at all. I do the 16/8 approach but mix in a 22-24 hour fast occasionally. The first time I did a 24 hour fast I was miserable, but now they aren't difficult at all. I would tell you that if you force yourself to make the 16 hours every day for a week or two, it will become much much easier. Martin talks about resetting your hunger hormone's by eating at the same time every day, and I feel like that totally worked for me.0

Yeah, this is very similar to me. I usually one or two workouts (lifting or HIIT/MetCon) fasted each week, and one or two not fasted. The first few times I tried working out fasted I felt weak and tired, but now training fasted is no problem at all. Some of my best workouts lately have been fasted workouts!0
