SO glad i just read this post. i've been doing a low carb/very high protein diet for the last few months....realised yesterday after a MASSIVE binge..that i can't do it anymore. i have ZERO energy...eating out/in social sitations is BEYOND a nightmare/leads to binges....so from today i am having 3 healthy, filling, nutritious meals and snacking on fruit. that is it! xxx0

I find that too much white bread/pasta etc.... makes me really sluggish so I am trying to eat wholewheat stuff instead. I am also a REAL carb person, I LOVE them, which was my downfall, so I have cut down on them but nor totally cut them out x0

I think the main reason people do the no bread thing is because of the carbs. (pretty much what some other people said) Personally I have gone that route and tried the low carb diet and ended up gaining a few pounds. So i went back to watching my calorie intake.
Personally I have a sandwich or a wrap everyday and I am still loosing 2+ lbs a week.0 -
I would rather be over weight than never have a carb. Seriously! Moderation and a balanced diet! To much meat consumption is just icky...0

I stopped eating pasta when I lost weight. It's not because carbs are bad, but because pasta/bread is calorie-dense and easy to overeat. I can't eat only one "serving" of pasta (being about the size of a baby's thumbnail) without going overboard. For me it's a matter of willpower. And carbs make me crave more carbs. So I cut back, but didn't eliminate, and I stopped craving carby foods that did nothing but pad my diet.
I'm not against carbs but it makes sense to understand the effect that bread and pasta has on the appetite. People who can easily moderate their intake of carb-heavy foods are at an advantage.

By the way, you can get carbs by not eating grains. They are not the be all and end all of carbohydrates. I don't judge people for eating bread or pasta or whatever (food, real food) so why judge others if NOT eating grains works for them.
I don't have a problem with anyone not eating grains. It's personal choice. It's the hating on grains/bread/carbs etc and the claim that they're the sole cause of obesity that I have a problem with.
And I don't doubt that reducing carbs or giving up grains helps some people to lose fat, but it's important that people understand that it's not *necessary* they don't *have to* give up bread/grains to lose fat (though some people with certain medical conditions might do better on a lower carb diet) - so long as you're supplying your body with what it needs, eating at a deficit and doing exercise then it's whatever helps you to stick with it in the long term.
well I am not a hater, of anything.
and in my case it was necessary and I had to do this because nothing else actually worked, as i mentioned my 2.5 year plateau earlier. I'm an active, clean-eating person so it's also not to say that I wasn't actually trying to lose weight / fat WITH grains in my diet.
I just think it's stupid either way to hate on or to act like one is an expert at something. even the so called experts have conflicting information. do what's right for you and stop judging others ("you" being general in this case). My personal opinion is eat healthy and clean, get some fresh air and exercise and if you want to eat bread or pizza that is your choice. Mine is to find an alternative.0 -

I eat bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, couscous, porridge. I've tried going carb free for a meal and generally end up chewing the table! It's all about balance and everything in moderation. Wish I had realised that a few years earlier.0

I take issue with any diet that tells you that you can't eat something as basic as bread and potatoes. People have eaten those for more generations than I care to think about without suffering from an obesity crisis so carbs clearly aren't the problem - people being lazy now is.0 -
And I used to be able to lose weight and eat eat carbs too.... looking at your photos most of the posters on here are young. When you are over 50 (and particularly when you are female) you may well find that it is a very different story.
Just bear that in mind for the next 20 years or so!0 -
Before MFP, I would live off bread, rice, pasta, noodles, etc. and I went from 145lb to 123lb. I never kept track of how many calories I was consuming or how much I burnt. I did this for like 4 or 5 months I think and it wasn't that hard. I wasn't as restrictive as I am now and I was doing really well. People could see a difference in my face, my overall build and my chest was strong (I did push ups everyday).
I still eat those carbs because if I didn't, it would be too expensive to keep feeding me lol. I still live with my parents and they pay for the shopping and they aren't going to go out of there way to buy more protein rich foods on top of what they normally buy. I do pay towards the little things I have, but too be honest, they don't eat unhealthy meals anyway so the protein is there anyway.
If I workout and do cardio, pretty sure eating carbs isn't going to hurt my progress. I don't think there is anyway someone could keep up a no/low carb diet for the rest of there lives. They will most likely put it back on as soon as they go back to the carbs, but it's all about incorporating healthier options and living with it instead of avoiding everything, you might think it's healthy, but mentally it will probably make you loopy.0 -
I eat ~200g carbs a day (wholemeal bread, wholemeal pasta, potatoes, noodles, porridge) and have lost 60lb. I literally could not go without carbs, when I try cutting them out I get so cold and hungry.
Yes I understand I'm still young and may be lucky that my metabolism allows me to do this - BUT, if I had cut out carbs, it would not be attainable for me. I think those "no-carb" diets are extremely stupid because it's unattainable to keep up and eventually you will go back to your old ways.
Instead I am now a LOT healthier and happier and it has been a lifestyle change for me, I can still have my carbs.0 -

I eat 1 slice of rye bread a week and 3 slices of Ezekiel bread weekly. Yes I LOVE bread and I try to stick to gluten free bread. Have to keep giving your body carbs, but you have to manage exactly how many it gets.0

it's people eating processed, chemical crap and not eating real food.

I don't really have bread often, just because I tend to prefer cooked meals throughout the day, and bread doesn't really go with much apart from a sandwich or toast.
I do however love pasta & rice. I will have those every single day (seriously!) Most of the time I'll have both in one day, or at least pasta. I used to have white of both, but now I have wholemeal pasta as it's better fibre & protein and I do like the taste. I hate brown rice though so I just stick to white.
I eat around 200-300g of carbs a day.
Still losing, because I'm in a calorie deficit :happy: :drinker:0 -
I agree. There are good carbs and bad carbs. I also am trying to eat only 1200 a day. How do you do it?0

I eat two slices of bread everyday, because I take a sandwich to work, I've been losing weight fine on it.
I did cut bread out completely in September 2011 to see if that would have any impact on weightloss, for me, it did not, however, I got the idea from somebody at work who did cut it out and shifted the pounds.
I guess what suits some people does not necessarily suit everybody.0 -

However, if eating bread, brown rice, other grains cause any type of bloating and / or gas and such there is an intolerance of some level there and it is best to cut them out.
No need to eat stuff that makes you feel sick or uncomfortable.0 -
