I need to ask here, because it IS true that a lot of threads get posted twice or three times here. Isn't there a way to get a thread closed with a link to a previous thread or something?

As in: Issue discussed at length here. [link]
    Thread closed.

Just asking because it seems that the right now it just leads to a whole amount of annoyment and frustration from both sides every time without advancing any debates. Oh and let's not forget the CICO vs nutrients threads that end up with people saying the same thing, but coming from different points of view, for twenty or so pages.

Then again, maybe it's better this way, as otherwise one would have to go through pages or pages to find the information needed and may possibly miss it?

I was just wondering as I haven't been around for that long, but that is how I usually see it happen on large forums that have recurring debates. :/

All the good information tends to get lost in all the mumbo jumbo. Really, the best thing for people to do is what is going to work best for them. If cutting out all sugar works best for them, then they should just do it despite what anyone else says. I think what gets people up in arms is when people who decide to do something like that acts as if everyone should do it, or they're not doing it right.

I feared that may be the case. :/

That makes sense. It just irks me a bit that at times, whenever these repeated threads come up, they are often met with a lot of (please read to the end before arguing) a lot of comments that may come across as hostile. I am not talking about the "hard truths" comments, I am taking about the more snarky, sarcastic comments that don't really contain any information as to why OP is wrong and just come off as condescending or hostile.

Sure, some snark is fine and a healthy part of humour, but in the long run, when a thread becomes 80% snark it becomes unhelpful and can make people feel unwelcome. On the other hand, I understand that people get sick of repeating the same thing over and over again. (hell, I've been here for three weeks and even I am already sick of some of the threads)

So I was just wondering if "Link-Close" wouldn't be easier. I guess not though. D:

I get where you're coming from. If you read the entire thread, you saw where I asked if newbies were welcome. I definitely understand long time members getting sick of the same threads/topics. Yet on Day 3 for me, it made me a little wary of starting a thread or responding because I wasn't sure what was going on until it was explained to me.

A moderator should be able to easily combine threads on the same topic, but I'm not a moderator here and have no desire to be. Been there and done that elsewhere and not doing it again. What a pain! lol

Lol. I have never been an internet moderator on large forums, but I have spent the last five years moderating real-life debates. I can't imagine what moderating an Internet discussion has to be like. Although banning people has to be a big plus.

LOL! Yes, the banning was a plus when necessary. It felt great to ban trolls.

I'm a patient person and taught 6th graders for years. My students were easier to moderate. When a volunteer moderating position is driving you to drinking, it's time to move on. lol

    Preach!

Lol, I remember the AOL chat rooms, especially the role playing ones. Those people were intense with it.

AOHell, I avoided it like the plague after the free hours ran out. It was bad even for early Internet.

Never really did AOL, but I remember Usenet, that was fun. Used to go on through my dial up Mindspring account.

That said, this particular thread isn't too bad. It's actually taking a rather entertaining turn.

There is always debate in any long running forum about linking to old content and just going with the new threads that rehash the same thing over and over. Any community that tries to just say "search this it's been answered"' will eventually die out since there are only so many topics. It can be annoying to older members, no doubt, but it does keep the community more vibrant and engaging for new members.

Serious question here. Not being a jerk. Are newbies welcome on the forum? Or is it a "we like who's here screw the rest" vibe?

I've been using the app but am curious about the dynamics of the forum. Thanks in advance.

Sassy, post what you like, when you like. Don't pay any attention to any of the don't do this or don't do that crew. It is a free forum and is not controlled by any of the members. As long as you follow the official forum rules and stay within the guidelines - post what you like.

Don't search old discussions because they are just that - OLD. It is much more fun to be a part of a NEW discussion and learn as you go along. Wading through pages and pages is a waste of time. If existing members find it tedious, they have the choice not to read it or be involved in the discussion.

It is not necessary to back things up with scientific evidence, it might be super important to some but me, I don't give a rat's ar$e - lots of things which were thought to be fact are no longer fact.

So just go for it honey and I hope that you meet lots of wonderful people along the way who will be of use to you in helping you stay healthy. You have a very unique medical history and I hope you continue to maintain your wonderful sense of humour.

My Fitness Pal is a lot more than just weight loss and I hope you get to enjoy those benefits and "screw the rest" xx

And for the record, I hadn't see the Fed Up thing so thank you OP for posting it. I have the right to see something and make up my own mind as to whether it is beneficial to me or not. I do not need the thought police to veto things on my behalf.

I wanted to share that I watched a newly released documentary last night called "Fed Up" with Katie Couric. Couric covers the ridiculous amounts of sugar that is added to processed foods and goes over some alarming statistics. I already knew processed foods aren't healthy, but this documentary was very interesting and extremely motivational. If anyone is interested, I watched it on Amazon, but I'm sure you can find it elsewhere. For me, education is motivation. The thought of eating processed foods this morning after watching this makes me cringe! I hope it sticks!!!

So what did you have for breakfast, OP, if you didn't want anything processed?

Why am I surprised by the lack of social decency in comments found on the internet? You wouldn't speak to someone the way you have me in person...but yet here you are online.

I find MFP pretty middle of the road as far as discourse goes. Not always the most pleasant but usually not too bad. I am on only a couple boards that are for "ladies and gentleman" where the rules of courtesy are strictly enforced, those are truly rare, and I'm on a few where it's the Wild West, which are much more common on the Net.

Overall, it's not so bad but it does get a little terse at times.

I care about science and believe in science, I just am not going to waste my precious time scouring through my old out dated textbooks or spend hours Goggling or worse still, wading through your previous posts (shudder), to find what some selected MFP members consider as evidence to back up my comments. I said "It is not necessary to back things up with scientific evidence" (and these are the words highlighted by your good self ) and I stand by that - people have a right to their opinions without the burden of having to substantiate every little word. I will do as I always do, speak my mind when I want and how I want. I will continue to respect people and their views and will tell things as I have experienced them in life and if they happen to not be scientifically sound then - OOPs!!

Thanks for responding to my question!

I had a co-worker who drove me insane about salt intake. I have to eat or drink a lot of salt to maintain a normal blood pressure. She scolded me every day until I finally printed off some articles on autonomic failure. I figured being a fellow teacher she'd understand sometimes people get rare diseases and have to listen to doctors and specialists. Nope. Still told me I should stop eating salt. I told her I preferred being conscious to fainting from low bp. lol

Oh I'm keeping my sense of humor! It's best to laugh than curl up in the fetal position begging the ceiling to fall in on top of my head. (Me last night. JK!)

Yes conscious is definitely the preferable state .lol Some people mean well but do not understand that we are all different. On the further end of the scale, a young girlfriend of my son was actually allergic to salt, rare but true. Her gums and mouth would peel from just cleaning her teeth. People, even her mother, insisted that she eat salt to get her body used to it. Apparently, her throat and the lining of her stomach was peeling and irritated from salt when they did investigations. She struggles to exclude salt entirely from her diet as you would imagine. At least you have to add it, much easier.

I find I have to now add salt back into my diet because I was cramping up so much from not eating it. It has it uses, and obviously in the sad case of my son's friend, its bad side.

Sorry to hear you were in so much pain last night and I wish I could take away just a fraction of it for you. I will be praying you to have a better night tonight as I would imagine it would be difficult for you to use pain relief medication.

Good luck on the boards and remember there are lots of wonderful people here and I hope you have the good fortune to find them. xx

It would be horrible to have an allergy to salt. So sad! Thank you for the prayers and the warm welcome! xx
