What nobody tells you about losing weight

Even at my skinniest ever (still around 10 kg off that one) pant shopping was a drama and left me in tears. In fact got so fed up with it that it got me into sewing. Haven't bought pants in 10 years or so, not intending to ever again either.
I make almost everything I wear. My 12" (or more) waist/hip difference happens in the space of 3 vertical inches. No company will ever make ready to wear to fit that.

Has this happened to you? I feel like it has to me but I assumed I was being paranoid.

People will hate on you as if you didn't put in the work. They will tell you how "lucky you are".7

OMG... the minute the "L" word comes out of their mouth I am down their throat before the "ucky" comes out BUt then I do that when someone says that about my job/income/lifestyle too.... My favorite response is "OMG it is so weird - seems like the harder I work the luckier I get?! Whats up with that?!"

Either they do not stock that size, or it gets picked clean as soon as new clothes go in . . . I am not sure. But I've been trying to find new pants for months, and I haven't yet found one that fits.
Speaking of pants and how they fit, apparently women's pants are not currently made for someone with a 10" difference between hips and waist. Anything I find that fits my hips gaps at the waist by several inches. I wish I knew what the manufacturers were using as standards.
Look for "curvy" fits. If you're in the States, you might try Loft and Ann Taylor for curvy fit pants. They're the best-fitting pants I've found. I recently discovered that Express jeans work great for my 11" difference waist/hips. Don't pay full price at Loft/AT. They have lots of 40-50% off sales.
Thank you, I will take a look at Loft/AT. I used to wear Express jeans all the time, but eventually decided I liked jeans with a higher rise. Perhaps they are making some now that high rise pants are more in fashion. I suspect that a good fit requires a bit of tailoring, which is a catch 22 for me, because my budget doesn't really allow me to buy expensive clothes, and it seems a bit of a waste to invest $$ in tailoring for cheap clothes.
I sew, but I don't really have the skills to tailor pants.

The people who don't put in the effort to get to an ideal weight should get stuck with a "l" word, or Lazy.

How you can lose 50 pounds and maintain the EXACT same body shape. Same shape just smaller format. I'm now lifting heavier weights hoping that bigger muscles will change my shape a bit more. dreaded apple body.9

Hi, please consider looking into Callanetics by Callan Pickney or The Lotte Berk Method to encourage your body to lean out into a more X shape.2 -
This was a great thread, I've read them all. Thanks everyone for sharing. It's a good thread to read on those unmotivated days!

Me too, it's that feeling of helplessness that gets me. I try so hard not to pity them and look for their strengths instead because I just can't help but think that at one time people saw me like that and probably felt the same way. Even though I was overweight & out of shape, there was so much more to me than just that.
I'm slowly working my way through this thread a few months later but I totally get that. I have such a hard time watching finales of Biggest Loser where the slimmed-down version scoffs at the overweight version of themselves. The overweight version is just as deserving of love and all the things as the slimmer one! It really reinforces the body shaming.13 -

Lack of focus on muscle! I have lost 50 pounds several times. The last time I lifted weights too. All the previous times I ended up a smaller fat person - exactly the same shape, with the same lumps and bumps, just shrunk to a smaller version. This last time, my whole body shape changed - new curves in cool places, etc.

@raregem99 I loved the Callanetics workout video. The one I have is from back in the 1980's. I haven't tried it since I was so overweight, but know that I've lost some I might have to try again.0

That you have to change how you think when you reach your goal weight. The compliments of how great you look stop coming, the thrill of losing another pound is gone, and you have to learn how to maintain what you've achieved. You have to decide to be proud of and happy with who you've become.
Wow. This.11 -

- how much confidence it will actually bring, especially when strangers start treating you like royalty all of a sudden!
- Sitting (particularly in baths) and laying (particularly in beds) will become ever increasingly uncomfortable.
- how vain you will become! I can't walk past a mirror without checking how I look nowadays!
Your turn!

You start feeling like your old self again! You start remembering that girl and you feel like you can actually be her again! 30 lbs down! 33 more to go! Half way to go to weigh what I did in high school!

I am not really " droopy" but my arms and legs are a lot smaller than my middle. I look a little deformed, but my middle with shrink with time and it will all even out again.

-Just because you lost weight doesn't mean you can go back to how you were before you were trying to lose weight. I know a few people who let themselves revert back to the old 'them', and they gained a lot of their weight back. This is a lifestyle change. A lifelong journey.
^^i am one of those people who went right back to my old ways. I lost 56 lbs in 2013 and I heard people say " you need to eat more", "you are too obsessed", " you are too skinny" etc and my fault that I went back to old ways. Now I'm on this for life so if they want to say I'm too obsessed or skinny or need to eat more I will smile and say Thank you and move on with my happy self....down 20 lbs in 2 months...:)8 -

One is about my fellow weight losers.... Once you get down a ways they can look at you in disgust for talking about dieting when they conclude you don't have a weight problem so great as theirs.... I doubt anyone here would do that, but it happens in the wild.
Another random observation, when I get depressed I can't eat. This is not something society can believe about an overweight person, why they assume if I am depressed I must put a quart of ice cream on one hand and lard in the other and feed like a pig at the trough but no, I stop eating...
Society has some deeply held beliefs, that's for sure
So true about the depression. I've been going through a bout recently and have had no appetite whatsoever. I'm not used to having to FORCE myself to eat

Wish there was a like/love button feature....just for this.1 -
I agree with everyone about how painful it can be finding bones you didn't realize were hiding! Yesterday I kept trying to prop my elbows on my desk at work and found it very painful. At first I thought my elbow was on something, then thought that maybe it was bruised. Only when I actually lifted my shirt sleeve up and felt where it hurt did I realize that it was my bone I was feeling!1

You will sometimes get annoyed or even angry when people offer you seconds or say you "deserve" a treat. I'm trying to lose weight! Extra calories means more work for me! Back off! (I'm still training my boyfriend about this).
I call them diet saboteurs. My family is supportive, but my coworkers would do this kind of stuff. Since I started my weight loss journey again, I didn't mention a word about it to them. I'll let them figure out I've been trying to lose weight when they start noticing.

Someone posted about not being able to eat when depressed. I am experiencing that right now. I started the morning in an icy fury, but have no desire for sugar carbs or chocolate. Kickboxing (which I don't actually do, so I would just hurt myself), but not food.
It takes some doing (and is tied in to other facets of my success) but it's odd to be in the position of wanting the endorphins from exercise more than the serotonin from sugar carbs.0 -
not sure how many times this has already been mentioned, but the sex is so much easier and better.7

This is a wonderful thread. Very fun, uplifting and inspiring. I know that I am down from my heaviest weight, but I don't *see* myself as being smaller. In the mirror, I still see me at my heaviest. But, I just really realized today that I am down around 42 pounds from 3 1/2 years ago (highest weight of 212 and am 170.2 as of today). I have skirts, pants, dresses & tops that are very loose on me now, but I just haven't had the desire to shop for new things yet. I guess I have been too scared to do so.5

I believe I have the eating healthier part down, just need to deal with my anxiety and overactive mind so I can go to the gym.
- Actually being cold all the time and needing a sweater for the office.
- Sitting at my office desk all day didn't bother me, now my joints ache periodically throughout the day.
- The amount of time it takes to strategically plan meals so they're not too repetitive.
+ Realizing I actually have bones in my hands now because they're not pudgy.
+ Wearing slightly lower shirts so my newly found collar bones will show.
+ My arms hang parallel to my body and don't lean out from resting on side fat.
- Having a full wardrobe of clothes too large with pants that fall off or look like diapers (and too poor to buy new).
+ Not minding being seen in my bathing suit/lingerie/birthday suit.
+ Not having to apply deodorant multiple times per day from excessive sweating.
-/+ Lightweight from just 1 or 2 drinks (I could drink a 6 pack before and not feel it).. however, cheap date!
+ Feeling overall better with healthier skin and hair.
- Guilty feeling from eating something bad, then the nausea/aches from stuffing bad thing in a healthy system.
+ Seeing the size of my butt switch places with the size of my gut tire.
+ More pale old stretch scars than active red stretch marks.
- The initial sagginess of skin (especially heavy boobs) from losing weight quickly.
+ Being able to wear clothes I kept from 5+ years ago. Oh, nostalgia.7 -
The alcohol thing is really startling, isn't it @odaveyrules? I used to be able to drink my friends under the table. At the Fourth of July parade I had to leave early because the five or so beers I had sent me over the edge. I reeeeeeeally have to be careful. I guess that's good though, less alcohol calories....1
