    Mary from Minnesota – I hope I will be able to post a picture of my flamingo t-shirt. It had gotten far too large for me to wear so a Red Hat “sister” offered to alter it for me when I offered to give it to her. So sweet. She knew this was a favorite. It’s in her hands now.

    I’m enjoying my mental image of Rolf and his herd. Rushing up and down mountains to get everyone home safely sounds like an enormous task.

    Michele NC:I've been dizzy a lot lately too... I think it's related to my allergies and my ear closing off. I'm so tired of not being able to hear properly or move quickly! A visit to the doc might be in order if its been going on for more than a week.

    Lenora: Congrats on the weight loss...isn't it awesome when the medical personnel are thrilled! WTG!!!

    Sheilaann48: Welcome to this thread...I'm so sorry to hear about your heart attack. It does change your life substantially! I was wondering if there is a cardiac rehab program where you live. The rehab program here recommended tai chi for me and its been wonderful for stress management as well as flexibility and mobility. I love it. There's nothing wrong with gentle exercise - my recommendation would be to pick one activity and start gradually and be consistent.

    Does anyone have a recipe for mulligatawny soup? I saw it on a special board yesterday and it's been years since I've had any.

    mtowne - i've never used a fitbit, i have alwaysed used polar watches, until i wore them out, now i use my iphone and hrm called wahoo that is hooked up to my iphone.

    well... gonna ride home. yesterday when I rode from the train station to home I took a different route. there was a short spot that was very steep so I had to stand. it felt ok when I got to the top. by the time I was in bed and was turning around it reminded me, don't stand up when you ride a hill. but I have no choice, i'm not going to get off of my bike and walk it up, you walk a dog, you DON'T walk a bike, sorry, that's my mantra.

    today, gonna ride home from work. I have my bike messenger bag so I won't have a strap over the injured shoulder at all, so it should feel better.

    Grits – My kitchen also makes me crazy because so many appliances are on the same breaker. It’s sometimes hard to remember which items can be used at the same time. But the good news is DS is finally tall enough to reached the circuit breaker, so I don’t have to go to the basement with him to help him climb on the workbench. Plus, it doesn't have elves that clean it. :'( // Congrats on the NSV of the swimsuit being too big !

    Vicki – hugs for you in the passing of your friend.

    Barbie – So glad your hubby understood. I look forward to hearing how your lifting works for you, too.

    Penny – My family sings, too, and it is a lovely bonding time for us. I’m so glad you were able to entertain both yourselves and others in the area.

    Lisag0328 – Hugs. I hope you find the support and strength you deserve. Keep complimenting others, and you will most certainly start getting those compliments back (or keep coming here and asking us).

    Purpleiris (and everyone new) – Welcome. I do better with smaller goals. I focus on trying to lose the weight 1-5 pounds at a time, not the 60 total that I want to lose. I focus on staying at or just under calorie goals 1 day at a time, and give myself a break if I make a mistake, like eating hamburger helper last night (because it was already cooked, and not too painful to chew) instead of something healthy. I also strive to work-out 30 minutes per day, in 10 minute blocks 3 times a day. The thought of doing anything for 30 minutes makes me nervous and bored, but I can usually do it for 10 minutes. I hope you keep coming back for the support you need. I know you can reach all your goals with baby steps. // I still tell my dad “no” when he offers me unhealthy food. Sometimes he gets “that look” on his face, so I take it and give it to DS or DH.

    Kim – I do the same thing. Read . . . read . . . read . . . Oops, I forgot to take notes. lol :D

    No, sadly my tooth is not much better. She removed the old loose filling and found a crack, so she had to drill a little deeper. She said the root is inflamed, but not infected, so no anti-biotics. She gave me some vicoden, but I'm such a lightweight I hate to take it, so I didn't even fill it yet. DH will bring it home tonight. The only thing that really helps is Listerine, so I've been rinsing with it several times per hour. She is really pushing me to have a root canal, but I'm going to give it several more days before I decide, because I don't think I met my deductible yet, and I just don't want to take the time off work if the swelling will go down on it's own. I'm already on 2 different anti-inflamatories, so hopefully I will be fine soon. Plus, since I didn't bring home the pain meds, I paced most of the night and lost that pesky pound that found me last week, so I'm back down to my ticker weight. Plus, I'm just that stubborn.

    Bowling starts tonight for DS and DH, so I'm pumped about walking 0.6 miles each way to Big Lots. I hope I can stock up on water enhancer drops. I also hope to finish the granny-square afghan I am making for my nephew's future daugther. I found some cute pink yarn, and verigated bright baby-color yarn. Everyone else in my family is buying her Green Bay Packers items (poor thing).

    I just bought a new Honeywell fan with five settings where the first setting is sleep. If you find white noise helps you I like this one. The light is also blue as opposed to an older fan I have that has red lights. Since we have cooled off here and I don't need the fan on the cooler settings I have used the sleep setting and find I like it.

    I know when I sleep better, so many things go better for me. I notice when I sleep better it is easier to stick to my healthier routines.

    Rita, someone with depression is NOT lazy! Lack of motivation and energy are symptoms! Do not call yourself lazy and recognize how strong you are when you can overcome those symptoms through will power! And yes, e><ercise is very helpful in fighting depression, along with full spectrum light (sunlight).

    Cheri, good point about the blood pressure! I asked my doctor about it and she said for me the benefits of a good night sleep outweigh the slight increase, but for someone with a big problem with blood pressure, it might not be so. Although not getting enough sleep is a cause of weight gain- you don't metabolize calories efficiently without sleep!

I no longer take it nightly but several times a week as it really does help with my sleep.

    I don't take Benadryl because it makes me drowsy until noon and I hate the feeling. I have taken Ambien for years, which helps me fall to sleep in 10 minutes but I still don't sleep longer than 4-5 hours. I don't drink coffee in the evenings and I don't drink alcohol at all.

    Mary - The Motor Maids is the oldest organization for women motorcyclists in North America, established in 1940. They put a heavy emphasis on riding, so if you want voting rights at the annual convention you have to ride there (and being a passenger doesn't count). They had their 75th anniversary convention in Canada in July. There are women in their 80s and 90s who still ride to convention!

    Lenora - Our new house was built in 1938, and we have the same problem with our outlets. I would like to have more of them, but our first task is to get the ones we already have replaced with proper grounded outlets! In the meantime, I have some plug bars with flat plugs, and whenever I have to put a bookcase or other large object in front of an outlet, I plug in a plug bar behind it.

    Penny - I have a great solution to the Windows 10 dilemma... it's called Linux! I run Ubuntu on my notebook now, and will probably switch the desktop over to it when they stop supporting Windows 7. Word on the street is that Windows 10 is a big improvement over 8, but it's full of spyware.

    Bad Penny - Welcome back! You made me think of my friend Bill, who often posts "Woo hoo, found a penny" to his Facebook status.


    Lately I want to eat All The Foods, and I gained a pound this week. Mild depression is still a factor, but I'm slogging along. I've been having trouble sleeping due to pain, so last night I took NSAIDs and a sleep aid to try and get back in the groove. Definitely feeling better this morning, and my sweetie the LMT is off early today so he's promised me a massage.

    It's Hump Day at last. I'm going to do my best to make up for wasted time for the rest of the week. Wishing you all health and joy!

    Joyce, if the avocado green appliances work, then you can play up the retro look. I think they look great with white. You can google retro kitchens and see lots of cute ones with avocado green. One that I liked used a picture of an avocado. Cute!

    The only reason we redid our kitchen was because our oven and dishwasher broke in the same week. I had been wanting new countertops and to lose the brass hardware, so that seemed to be a sign that it was time. We had been wanting to add a sunroom, but we were waiting until we got a new roof. The the roof sprung a leak while I was waiting on estimates for the kitchen. We saved money by keeping our existing vinyl floor. I originally was not going to change the dining room wallpaper but then the plumber fell through the dining room ceiling and that was going to have to be fixed/painted so we said, why not? I removed the wallpaper myself to save more money. To be honest, I know my watermelon wallpaper was dated, but I still like it and miss it.

    My next project will be to replace that flooring and the carpet in the rest of the house. We are saving for it now. We don't do home improvements that are "wants" unless we can cash flow them, so it might be a while.

    ssc1958 - thanks for the compliment - it is not as terrible as it sounds, it comes and goes, depends on what i did. yesterday i went home on a different route and it had in one part of a hill that i was going up, it had a short steep climb, well i stood up to get up there. i was ok for the rest of the ride home, but later at nite, it hurt some because of it. so i just have to watch it.

    Well it is Wednesday and I hope everyone is doing well. I am working the 7-3 shift today with the boss. After work I need to run by the pharmacy and pickup meds and then go home and see about starting to mow the lawn. It was only 50 this morning and only to get up to around 75.
    Had a good time with the DGGS's last evening. They can make me smile over the littlest things. Then some friends called and their car broke down at Wal_Mart so we went out to see if DH could help. Sounds like the timing belt broke and broke something else. So the car is not worth fixing. Feel bad as they only have one car now and with four kids at home that is not going to be easy. Please pray that things will get better for them. Thanks. It reminds me of all the things I am Blessed with.

    Michelle--Seems you have been getting dizzy more often lately. Maybe time to get it checked out. Sure don't want anything to happen to you.

    Yvonne--The motor maids sounds like a good group. But I am a back seat rider not a driver. I could drive the trike we had, but not the motorcycle we have now. First off I am not tall enough for my feet to reach the ground and I enjoy just watching around us and listening to my ipad. I should not of been, but I was surprised at the number of women riding thier own motorcycles last Saturday at the Make a Wish Ride. Not just a men's sport anymore. Hope you are feeling better soon.     Katiebug--Sounds to me like redoing the kitchen and sunroom was met to be. We have somethings we want to do at our house, but waiting until we have the money.

    Well ladies it does not look like the sun is going to shine much this afternoon so planning to do some mowing when I get off work. Then need to vacumn the living room and clean the kitchen floor. Not been home much to get much done. So type at you later. Keeping you all in my prayers.

    Well this certainly is an interesting take on the situation. I am 11 years post-menopausal. I experienced natural early menopause as I was only 45 yo when I finished up. Had to take HRT meds for about 6 years as the hot flashes/night sweats were debilitating and extremely effecting my quality of life. Since going off those I do find that my body temp is higher and I will perspire quicker than most. I have noticed though that some days I do have very light hot flashes. I am going to monitor those and see if there is any correlation as you have mentioned.

    The thot never even occurred to me. I had to have a complete hysterectomy when I 35 (30 years ago). I always associate the urge to eat everything in sight with stress, depression, overtired, etc.

    I had a complete hysterectomy at the age of 30; fibroids tumors. I had already had my family. MD put me on hormone replacement with one week off; I was such a pluperfect *kitten* I asked him to do something else. He told me to take the pills all month long. I still felt horrible and then I decided to go off all hormone pills and life was so much better for me. For a number of years (when I worked) my weight was consistently 135lbs. After I retired my weight started going up and up and yo-yo for a while. Diagnosed as Bipolar and put on Lithium. I became Lithium Toxic for a reason unknown to my MD, was taking my meds as Rx'd. I was 2.4 on the Lithium Scale when .6 - .8 is considered 'normal' - they put me in the hospital; spent 3 weeks in ICU and had my kidneys flushed to get the Lithium out of my body before it killed me. I don't remember squat about it, other than my husband said I was having seizures non-stop and that the MD had told him that the only way to get the Lithium out of my body quickly was to flush my kidneys and I might die in the process. DH told him, that 'if' I might die without doing anything, he'd rather be doing something and if I died, it was meant to be. Here I am ........ Actually I worked for several years after being diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder; was saddened when I could no longer do the work because of the stress. I had loved my job and had the best boss of all.

    I'm now 64 and about all I can say is medications that I take, most for Bipolar Disorder, make me put on the weight. I was consistently putting on 1 to 1.5 pounds a month and did that for 5 years - total - until I weighed 199lbs. By this point I was unable to bend over and tie or buckle my shoes, felt like $#*T warmed over, disgusted with the way I looked, and had no clothes that fit me; so I decided 'now is the time to do something drastic'. My health was tanking fast. About the only good thing was I was not having periods. At 5'4" a 199lb weight was pretty bad and my records showed me as 'mildly obese'. I did not 'like' that one bit. So here I am 20lbs lighter, can buckle/tie my shoes, can move better all around, and in a better mood and DH is very proud of my weight loss. Still got a way to go; but, losing it slowly is best. I've been on this modified liquid plan for 14 weeks now. My tummy has gone down; but, late at night I feel bloated, not sure why.

    I don't think that I eat from stress, probably just the opposite; and I am not a 'sweet eater' although I do have times when I crave ice cream. Thankfully, Klondike puts out several products that are 100 calories and when I feel that urge (like today) I eat one.

    Recently, I have been feeling 'cold' all the time; especially my feet which also feel like they are damp, especially if I put on socks. I hate this feeling because when I do have it, I warm up, get too hot, then take off clothes and get cold again. Is this a delayed 'hot flash' or something? I also take a thyroid replacement pill which before I went on the diet (if that is what you want to call it - I don't) it had been increased from 150mcg to 200mcg (upped twice) from a starting point of 125mcg. I don't really think it is the thyroid replacement doing this to me; I think it is my body saying 'ok, it is time that you start going into normal menopause - you are now that age'. I hope it doesn't last too long. It's been a little over a year.

    Mia in MI – Absolutely! We all know getting old ain't for sissies. Getting old while continuing to work a farm in northern Norway is for superheros! Everyone here in the village is grateful to Rolf not just for being his great friendly self, but also for the way his goats and sheep help keep the landscape from getting overgrown.

    Terri – Congratulations on losing that pesky pound... I guess. But remember we're aiming for a lifestyle change?     Yvonne in TX – The house where I am now has PLENTY of outlets! But then it was built in 2010. I designed it myself and knowing full well how many gadgets we need to plug in, I had them put in a whole bunch.

    I see what you're saying about LINUX. My programmer son uses LINUX for all his private computer needs and won't touch anything from Microsoft with a ten-foot pole. But I'm a free-lance editor and I have to use Word because that's what all my clients use. They send me files to edit, and when I return them, those files still have to be compatible with the customer's software. Still, thanks for the suggestion! :flowerforyou:

    Mary from MN – I guess you're our new poster child for the benefits of Stronglift 5×5. :) I've been looking into it and may give it a try. In particular, I'm hoping it will help keep my bones strong. My mother's problems with osteoporosis are a warning sign! Next week when I get home to 78°N I'll get myself a pass card at the gym so I can use their equipment. I simply can't face the idea of owning any more stuff. :/

    Speaking of the Far North, when I was a Twin Cities girl the word "Bemidji" conjured up images of snowdrifts and iron mines and a place waaaaay north. And look at me now!

    Caffeine apparently does not bother me, thankfully - I love my coffee (mornings and evenings).

    I've been using a CPAP for almost 5 years and next year I will be able to turn in my old one for a new one. The one they gave me to use while mine is 'in the shop' ... HATE IT! It whistles and you can get the water in it without pouring it all over the end table. I have not had any problems with Medicare paying for it or for my supplies. I also have a secondary insurance that pays the rest of it. I just recently had another 'sleep study' done, to prepare for getting the 'new' CPAP machine. I've been told that is all I had to do in order to continue getting it. I 'rent' mine instead of 'buying' it because I did not want to have to repair it or replace it at my expense. On my machine there is a chip that I take out every 6 months or so and they print out a read-out which shows how many nights I use it and for how long I use it. I even use mine if I take a nap (so that I will feel restful after it).

    I get my CPAP machine and supplies through American Home Patient. It is a mail order company; but they have offices in some towns. I'm called long distance by the people who pack up my supplies and send them to me after asking me some 'stupid' questions about why I am ordering them (mask is collapsing, tubes are getting condensation in them and things like that). If something happens to the machine - I take it to their local office and they ship it off and give me a replacement (which I have to also get an order from the MD to get it). 1-877-221-9612 or http://www.ahom.com. You would probably have to have a MD order a 'sleep study' to prove that you actually need one and then they set up the shipping dates. The local office sets the 'settings' on it and this last time the air flow was decreased by 1 point. I get masks and hoses every 6 months and then they replace my chin strap and humidifier on an alternating 6 month period. So far, I have never had any trouble about Medicare and my 2ndary insurance paying for it; and the company has to 'write off' the balance not paid. I'd talk to your MD about the issues you are having. He would probably end up having to order a 'sleep study' for you which should show that it is a needed item, therefore, Medicare should pay. I don't know. Just a suggestion. I would not talk to a 'tech' about it; I'd talk directly to the MD. The first time I had a 'sleep study' done it was ordered by my GP; the next time I had it I had been referred to a lung specialist. All this is probably due to ObuzzardCare. >:)

    LOL! I think we all need a 'break' from our children, even the ones that are 'grown' and on their own, especially if they live just next door. :#

    @jnkmom - even 'if' you are planning on ripping it out some day; you'd be surprised at what a paint job will do to brighten up the place. Our den was the same dark paneling that was in the kitchen. So brown it was almost black. We painted it a nice light yellow/beige with off-white trim. It made all the world of difference to the entire house. We also realized that some amateur must have put the trim work up; we had to do a lot of filling in with spackling. We also added a FP to the room as well. The brick on our house was so ugly (a lot of pink and brown and just a little cream); so the FP man matched it as best as he could and then alternatingly put some of the 'old' brick in when he was building the chimney and fireplace. We had an ugly brown roof on the house - thankfully it was ruined by a hailstorm shortly after we moved in and we got a new one; this time it was gray. Put black paint on the shutters then and painted the trim the cream color in the bricks. Looked like a totally different house. One house we lived in, every time I told someone where I lived . . . they'd say, 'oh the house that use to have the ugly blue trim and shutters on it'. Yeah, that'd be the one. That was the previous owners paint choice. It was a medium baby blue. We painted that the first week we lived in the place. You just have to be able to 'look past the ugly'.

    For me, I think 'how I think/feel about myself' has a lot to do with whether or not I have serious 'mood swings' with my Bipolar Disorder. I've only once in all the time that I have been diagnosed as Bipolar gone to the 'depressed' side of it. Usually my moods are more like going up and then coming down on an iced over pond ___/\_____/\___/\__ Never want to do THAT (get that depressed) again. My BF had come over to check on me, knew I was home; but, could not get me to the door. I heard her screaming for me to 'come open the door' and banging on the windows and doors; but, all I felt like, at the time, was just lay here and maybe you'll go to sleep and wake up somewhere else (like maybe in Heaven). She called my husband who confirmed I was home and that I was sleeping when he left; he told her where to find the key and she called the EMTs when I would not respond to her. I was just a limp noodle and didn't even care that she was slapping me 'hard' trying to wake me up. She took me to Macon to see my PsycheMD who promptly admitted me. I did tell my PsycheMD that I would prefer to be one step to the right (manic) of 'normal' - not sitting on the fence, than to ever be run the risk of being depressed. It took a 3-week tour of the hospital with him dicking with my medications to straighten me out. That was 3 years ago. I don't take a 'new' medication without checking with either him or my pharmacist about any interactions or reactions I could possibly have if I take it. He has called my MD in town and asked if there was something else I could take in the place of what had been Rx'd. I'm allergic to penicillin and Cipro; can't take a Z-pak because of one of the medications, and can't take some other antibiotic because of another different medication. That doesn't count numerous other medications that I have a bad sensitivity to that makes it so I cannot take them either. So I get to either 'try' something 'new' on the market or 'suffer' through an illness like a cold. Going to get my yearly flu shot tomorrow.

    Well tomorrow I am volunterring at the community center serving lunch for the Senior Luncheon. There is 4 of us that do it from the TOPS ladies. Should be fun! Enjoy the day all :-)

    Penny - I credit the pacing to the loss, not the tooth pain. I am still determined to fix this pain without another root canal, so send me strength. Thanks! I felt that. o:) // Since I now live in Packer Country, I tolerate them and all the fans. I just feel bad that this baby has no clue what she's getting into. And since she lives in Arizona, she will be in the minority. And, baby girls should get the chance to have cute clothes, too, not just Packer clothes. I mean, it's not like her Dad is smart enough to be a Bears fan or anything (yeah, that's right, I said it ! Boom ) :D

    I tried the CPAP, but I couldn't tolerate it during the hot flashes. My MD is overly worried (in my opinion), because she is a friend of my inlaws, and sleep apnea was the reason my middle sister passed last January. Just today I ordered a mouthpiece that is supposed to help. I was supposed to get one from the Dentist for around $200, but the Dentist never called, and I forgot to ask yesterday when I was there for the tooth, so I paid $7.16 off the Internet. I hope it fits, and works. If not, at least it didn't cost much.

    Hello everyone! Just a quick check in for me today. Not much going on. It was raining this morning and now, at 3:00 pm, it is SIXTY EIGHT DEGREES! Hooray! I love cooler weather.

    Today I haven't done anything constructive, except for enrolling my DGD in the new session of piano lessons and my DGS in the boys gymnastics class. Other than that I've been sitting on my butt listening to an audiobook. My head has felt a little funny the last couple of days. Just kind of floating. I keep checking to see if I'm wearing my reading glasses instead of my regular ones, but I'm not. Hopefully it will pass soon.

    Sylvia - Very cool here too, only 68. Low tonight supposed to be 58, if so we will break record lows for tonight. I'm sitting on the patio soaking in the cool air. :)

    hey peeps! I got some Percocet from a co-worker that had some! I am pain free til it wears off :0).... don't feel loopy or anything, I feel normal, just no pain.

    Pip - You blow my mind. The last time I took percocet for foot surgery I hallucinated giant butterflies. I am SUCH a lightweight when it comes to medicine. I am SO glad you are getting relief for you pain. Keep taking care !

    Yvonne in TX: Do you have a smart phone? I do all my logging from my phone and have never missed a day, even when travelling. My main diet strategy has always been portion control because of the number of food allergies and sensitivities I have. I have learned to make choices in restaurants that support staying on target and/or very close to target. Sometimes I have them divide the meal and put half in a take-out container. Sometimes I order items ala-carte, and sometimes I order appetizers rather than a main dish. I use exercise to compensate for over-doing calories. Hotels often have exercise rooms with equipment, or pools. If not, I take myself for a walk. No matter what I eat, I log the food and the exercise. I hope this gives you an idea or two that could work for you. :flowerforyou:

    Janet OKC: I've also had sleep issues that impacted my memory and attention levels. I found forms on line to record sleep and used them for several weeks. We should be averaging a minimum of 7-7.5 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night to keep our brains charged up and functioning well. After several months, I stopped using the paper tracking system, but I'm still using the same goals and taking mental note each day whether I met my sleep goal. I always do better when I'm well rested. :flowerforyou:

    Mary from MN: I find that sleep time is important in order for me to have good memory recall and focus. I got my information from AARP in the beginning, thanks to a tip from Kim in N. CA. Then I did online research to refine and confirm it. You can see my previous post about sleep time. I haven't paid any attention to Dr. Oz since trying one of his "miracle" weight loss products. I think he is in show business, not health business. :mad:

    2. Cardio exercise at least 3 days a week. Work on flexibility and back strength.
    3. Have fun every day.
    4. Drink at least three glasses of water daily, preferably more!
    5. Eliminate alcohol.
    6. Monitor sleep. Try to average 7 or more hours of sleep nightly.
