Yay! Managed a 2 mile walk tonight on my bum leg/hip. Felt pretty good. I wasn't sure if I should, but I took the dog with me and she did well and seemed very happy. She is getting better.
Supper was thin crust pizza. I had 1 1/2 slices. Water to drink. My "boo-boo" today was having a dark chocolate mocha from Starbucks.
Sara - I like the idea of one dark chocolate biscotti a day. I wonder if I would have the willpower?2 -
Annie - great job on that 2-mile walk. What is your dog's name? Glad she did well!
It's a good thing I'm stingy when it comes to Starbucks--I don't buy the coffee drinks there, only the pounds of coffee beans for home. I didn't know they had a dark chocolate mocha! Hopefully, I will forget this in a few days. There's one directly across the street from my building. LOL!
Good night all~~

SATURDAY,
Good morning, up with dog who is now done so back for more ZZZ's for us.
Lana - good reality check on Starbucks - their drinks are corn syrup based. You have Ghiradelli chocolate to use to make your own, and you have a budget.
Dog to groomers today, she looks and smells so good that she gets extra hugs when she gets home. Treats are also on tap.
Long week, just glad its Saturday. Nap somewhere in today if I get lucky.
Wave to all who follow. BBL.1 -

Lana - thank you for providing the fool part of today. Errands done, dog up next. I hope you didnt think I was nagging you about your hot chocolate, I just think Starbucks is overrated - especially when you have better chocolate at home.
Never good at weekend lunches so I just bought 2 more salads to eat. Boring, but stops some of the "extra" snacking.
BBL1 -
Oh Sara, I'm just highly suggestible! Someone mentions something they are having to eat or drink, and, for the moment, I want it too! Just like a little kid sometimes. When I eat out with people, I always second guess my choice because I think other people's choices are better than mine. Must be rooted in my childhood somehow. LOL.
Miss Tillie will be all cuddly today and smelling nice from her groomer? Yay!
Time to shower, dress, and go for a walk. The rain seems to have stopped~~
Lana1 -
Dog is waiting for sun to sunbathe.Bought chicken to make fried rice with chicken, havent had in awhile and it makes 4 servings.
Lana - hope you had a good walk. Sun bright here (less pollution) but rain is in forecast.

Sara-
I managed to get out there for a walk! I headed up to the Park, got across to 5th Avenue, and the legs were getting shaky, so I got a bus and subway back home. IPhone says 2.2 miles. This is good all things considered.
Time for dinner. I still have plenty of "old points" left. Maybe scrambled eggs, cheese, and veggies.
Lana1 -
Good evening,
Frozen lasagna for dinner. Bought french macaroons to share with groomer who knew how good they were. Hot chocolate for after dinner.
Tomorrow I cook for dinners - fried rice with chicken and vegetables (broccoli and mixed frozen vegetables).
Excellent walk Lana!! I usually sleep better after a good walk.
No nap today, reading book instead. Tomorrow who knows?
Wishing all a good evening.1 -
Lana- I do the exact same thing when eating with others... always wish I woulda got what someone else ordered... never thought it meant anything, other than possible food envy... congrats on the good walk!
3 times a year, we have a Swap meet at a Cave... it's not in the cave just on the grounds...we decided, spur of the moment, to go and just walk around... definitely got much needed steps in, NOT a good food day at all....we also succeeded in not spending any money..WIN WIN for sure!0 -
Saturday late check-in
Scale was back at 155.6. Definitely not a good eating day. Lunch out with 92 year old grandpa and some cousins. Supper was grilled chicken and fajita vegetables with brown rice in a flour tortilla. Only water to drink all day - except I see a margarita on the horizon tonight. I did go for a 1.5 mile walk with my dog and got in over 10,000 steps today. And today is Day 32 without pop!
Bought a new diet book = The Fast Metabolism Diet. I figured what I have been doing isn't working, so maybe change it up. Also, DH admitted to me that he has checked his BP and it is HIGH! He should be on medication. I agreed to let him try this diet for the next month and see if he's able to lose weight and/or lower his BP. If the BP doesn't come down enough, he has to see our doctor. I don't want him to have a heart attack or stroke! Wish us luck. Will have to change our morning schedule a bit in order to eat within 30 minutes of waking up. And will have to give up coffee! We are going to do our meal-planning and grocery shopping tomorrow and then start on Monday.
DS in college is on his way home right now with some friends (guys and gals) to grill and have a bonfire. It's interesting because he never wanted to have people over in high school. Complained our house wasn't big enough and wasn't set up right for having friends over. He had his second counseling session on Thursday night and was disappointed in how it went. We reminded him it will take time. My mom also reached out to him. She is so wise and he trusts her and values her thoughts.
Got some sad news earlier this week that my oldest nephew was being investigated for drug activity. He is 21 and has been on a downward spiral since high school. Apparently he was staying at his dad's for a couple of days and stole some of his younger brother's ADHD medication. When his dad went to fill the prescription, the pharmacy said he was too early to get it. They couldn't fill it unless he filed a police report against nephew. How horrible to have to file a police report against your own son. Anyway, nephew was arrested on Thursday and had his first court appearance on Friday. Felony charges. He was released and will have another hearing later in May. He has nowhere to go, no job, no money. He has managed to crash with a friend for a couple of nights but that can't last for long. He's burned bridges with most of his friends. Neither of his parents dare let him stay at their homes. They are working to get him into inpatient treatment but not much can be done on the weekend. So sad and so frustrating. He was such a sweet kid. Saying lots of prayers.
Time to do our homework for our Dave Ramsey class which is tomorrow morning.
Good night!

Annie - prayers for your nephew.. my nephew has been struggling with addiction... he was clean for 3 years, had a beautiful baby girl, was doing great... and, then he tried heroin, thanks to his GF... in Jan, he was arrested for possession, and that baby girl is now in Foster Care... they've already had one hearing and did not get her back...the court doesn't feel it's in her best interest to be with family..I don't judge, but I will never understand addiction...I can only hope, he will do what's right, stay clean and get his daughter back...I hope, this is a wake up call for your nephew, he gets help and gets better....
I hope this new diet works for you and DH.. good luck to you both and hope it helps with his BP... he needs to stay healthy!
Off to veg out and watch mind numbing TV...
Have a great night!

SUNDAY
Good morning,
Sunday paper here very early, got paper and went back to sleep. Dog is now taken care of and I will set alarm again.
Killed strange looking bug by door. Stuck in plastic bag and threw away. Being such a wet year I expect many bugs, I dont need to see new ones.
Back for more ZZZ. Back later.1 -
Hi, I'm serial starter. I'm getting married next year and I want the flab gone! I'm rubbish over the winter, I find losing weight much easier in the summer so I'm taking this prime time (for me) to start again.
81 lbs to go.0 -
Welcome @kakiem! Winter is never an easy tune to lose weight...food is so warm and comforting... this is a great place to come find support and encouragement... good luck.. I'm sure you'll be right where you want to be for wedding!0
-
Errands done. Found Paul Newman's dog treats, which dog likes so she has another option. Will donate sweet potato treats (the expensive ones of course) to a neighbor with dogs.
Winter is hard because getting out is not the best exercise time be it rain or snow. Comfort foods abound, do we even mention the holidays?? Many people just give up and start at New Years.
Bought pita bread for freezer, thinking maybe breakfast pitas (eggs, sauage, cheese) as well as pita pizza.
Tea kettle done. Trying herbal tea and will get some decaf coffee later. Too much caffeine lately.
Jeans are wearing out in knees, so may need do a thrift store run this month??1 -
Missy - so wonderful you finally get to start your new job! I know you've really been looking forward to it... I'm sure you'll be much happier! And, super bonus about more workouts!
Sara- strange bugs can stay away! Living in the woods, nothing surprises me... don't like them in my house at all..
I just noticed, jeans I just got in November, are already starting to wear... always in the worst place... jeans just don't last like they used to...
Waves to Lana and everyone else!
Hanging with the dogs, today...
Have a great day!
Check in later...

Not a weight watcher. This is my third or fourth time restarting with MFP in 3 years; kept getting foot injuries that kept me from exercising. This time I'm trying not to rely on exercise and setting my activity level lower. Ok to poke my nose in the thread?2
-
Hey Missy!
How did you find that picture of me and my coffee? LOL! So glad to hear you start your new position tomorrow. Sending magic vibes to you~~
Welcome to Kakiem!!

......hit send too soon.....
Sara - Not new bugs! Argh.
Enjoy your Sunday!
There is a tiny back yard space/garden behind my building, which my only real window looks out over. I'm going to go out there and clean it up a bit and get the Virginia Creeper vines off of the poor Japanese Maple before every thing starts to grow again this Spring.
.....then another walk, maybe over to the Hudson River park.

Today being Sunday I splurged a little at breakfast and tried a new recipe--buttermilk biscuits--that I found online ("Brigg's Buttermilk Biscuits"). Ordinarily I don't eat bread-like items so anytime I do I feel extravagant.
The original was for 8 biscuits but it doesn't use any eggs or other difficult-to-scale-down ingredients, so I made a 1/8 size recipe and left out the shortening (used only butter). 213 cals (by formulation), so that uses up my 'treat calories' budget for the day. I didn't have self-rising flour but it's just 1.5 tsp baking powder and 1/4 tsp salt per cup of flour--easy to recreate at home.
Also starring in Sunday's breakfast extravaganza--2 eggs, 3 trader joe's chicken breakfast sausage (130 cals, such a deal!!!), 70g of Galia melon, and tea with a tablespoon of real cream. Total 519 cals (on a daily target of 1670 cals). Without the biscuit (as I normally eat it) this breakfast would be around 310 calories.
I have a container of refrigerated "ancient grains" soup (lentil & quinoa, basically) from trader joe's that will be 400 cals for lunch, so I still have a lot of calories left for figuring out something for dinner. Broccoli will be involved because I have some in the refrigerator, but that's like, 25 calories a serving so hardly worth mentioning.
This iteration of MFP I've lost 20 lbs in 52 days, including the initial water whoosh, but the last 30 days are probably more representative of my 'real' weight loss rate without the whoosh. In 30 days I lost 8 lbs, which seems to me like a realistic target rate for now (I need to lose about 90 more lbs). BUT as I lose more weight my calorie limit will go lower and I may need to change my meals.
So I'm kind of wondering how this stacks up next to the WW approach and other folks experiences adjusting their calorie targets downward as they progress?
other tmi: My diet is always a little high in fats according to mfp targets, but I know from experience my carb-meter seems to be busted; on a low fat diet I'm always ravenous and over-eat, whereas on a fat-friendly, reduced (but not truly 'low') carb diet I feel full at a lower calorie count. So far I seem to have lucked out on the cholesterol & blood pressure genes, so eggs and salt aren't an issue for me; my lab numbers just keep chugging along without changing.

Reading back a little in the thread, it sounds to me like several people here are struggling with the soda monster and candy cravings.
Some bad news on that front. Carbonation can do strange things to your acid-base balance; your body is able to compensate for an occasional carbonated water without lasting issues, but if you drink carbonated beverages every day, then you're constantly in that compensation mode. I don't recall the specifics (it has to do with how your kidneys buffer blood pH) but over a prolonged period, these changes can increase your risk of osteoporosis because they keep your blood chemistry in a mode that favors drawing calcium from your bones, iirc. Maybe marginal effect on kidney stone risk. That's from the *carbonation*, ignoring the sweeteners. Using carbonated water with lemon will save you from the calories of a sweetener but doesn't change the effects of carbonation.
There's also a lot of questions as to whether corn syrup (fructose) increases your risk of type 2 diabetes more than sugar (sucrose) does, which plays into your choice of both soda and candy. To be abundantly cautious, read the labels and pick treats that don't use corn syrup. This may reduce some categories (eg: divinity, which is mostly corn-syrup) to holidays-only treats. For others it may mean picking a different brand of the same category of yummy.
I'm kind of old-school, so I rely on teas and herbal infusions, and tolerate the occasional calorie-hit of fresh squeezed juice, rather than carbonated stuff. It's more interesting than plain water, less interesting than carbonation, but a compromise that works for me. I figure people have been drinking teas for probably 10,000 years and so we know all the side effects; for actual *tea* most of the side effects seem to be beneficial.
For candy, substitute real fruit when you can, unless your poison is chocolate, in which case life is too short for cheap chocolate--get yourself something really high-quality with ingredients you can pronounce and no corn syrup.
add: your body is adaptable, and it up-regulates and down-regulates enzymes and receptors according to how much they are used. If you eat a lot of sweets, you down-regulate your receptors for sweet on your tongue and loose your sensitivity to sugars. If you avoid sweets for a few months, your body up-regulates receptors for sweet on your tongue, everything (eg: unaltered fruits and veggies) tastes sweeter. Candy you formerly craved are way too sweet when you try to eat them again, and other treats that used to be 'bland' (when you weren't as sensitive to sugars) become yummy. If you can just break yourself of the candy habit for a few months, you'll regain your ability to appreciate more healthy alternatives; if you can cold-turkey on candy starting now, you might experience a really awesome cherry season this year because your ability to taste their natural sweetness will increase.1 -
Sunday
Darn allergies are bugging the eyes more today again. Grrr. DH wants me to go see an eye doctor. Not much they could do, in my opinion, except maybe prescribe different drops? Just so itchy - especially the outer corners of my eyes.
Just got done making grocery list for the new diet plan to start tomorrow. Not sure we can afford this plan! But will try for this week and then see how we feel about it.
Dreary, rainy day here today. No walk outside. Should do homework but having trouble finding motivation.
Enjoy the day,
Annie1 -
Annie - I can totally relate about allergies! So miserable! I suffer from dry, itchy eyes, sneezing, itchy nose, itchy ears... and, the meds I take, I have to take twice the recommended dose... ugh... good luck with the diet... hopefully, it will kick start your weight loss and, you will be on your way to success!0
-
Missy I was staring at the large coffee mug I did not read about your job starting tomorrow - hope you found some new clothes that will make you enjoy your first day!
Stopped drinking soda a long time ago when I heard carbonation changes your stomach ph and I had a stomach ulcer.
Annie - there are lubricant eye drops, the ones for nighttime use (stay away from Visine or any "red reduction" drops). Also try microwaving dry rice in an old (clean please) sock and use for 10 minutes as a warm compress on your eyes (keeps all the oil ducts in our eyes working - and it feels good).
Have the dvd set (2 dvds) of "The Best Magnolia Hotel". Decided to break them out and watch.
Love new recipes, hate it if I have to buy extra and sometimes expensive food. Hope the recipes and plan works.1 -
LAT1963 - I see you are a woman of few words! Welcome!

The best part of rainy weather...mushroom hunting! I didn't get to go myself, today... but, SO brought some home for dinner...we're gonna wait a few days and try again... it's the only hunting I'm ok with..really good exercise, hiking thru the woods, up and down the steep hills... and, they are so yummy!0
-
Sara - warm compress felt so good! Thank you for the tip!2

Jumping in....hope that's ok...I like this threads vibe! I started reading the first posts and then realized that they were from last summer. ....anyway.....
Hi. I am Sherry. 47...mother of 4....I have been overweight most of my adult life. In recent years I have had a bum knee that has kept me from being very active. But in nov I had a total knee replacement. I need a second one for the other knee...so I can have a matching set...but the surgery is VERY difficult. My surgeon who is also a friend said that the number one thing I can do to preserve my new knee and put off the next surgery is to lose weight. It's discouraging to be at that place again where I have to START. I have tried half a dozen "programs" ...the only really thing that has worked for me is MFP. It looks like some of you came from ww....I have signed up and sorta tried to use ww I bet 5 times. MFP works for me. I originally lost 30+ lbs....but I am now approaching the highest I ever was (268)...I am 252 this morning. Anyway...hope I can join in.
Sorry for the rambling post....
Goodnight from Montana2 -
Hello Sherry from Montana! Welcome! This is a good group--stick around!
Time for bed. See you all tomorrow~~
