Marcelynh wrote: Another half-marathon this weekend. Cooler this time which will be nice. The last one was hot! I don't like doing them in 75 degree weather. This one will be in the 40s and low 50s. Not bad.
I've been very busy and haven't had time to read. In about an hour my husband and I head for the airport to go to Stockholm for the annual celebration of a learned society he's a member of. It's a tie-and-tails type event held in the same place as the party for the Nobel Prize. There will be induction of new members, a keynote lecture, and an award ceremony, followed by dinner and then dancing. So I'm busybusybusy-all-stressed-out. But I wrote this to a friend about what I did yesterday and thought I'd share. :flowerforyou:
Every year starting in mid-January there are open lectures for the people of Longyearbyen on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The three-week lecture series started way back in the old days when there wasn't anything to do here until the light started to return. The lecturers are from the research institutions and the Governor's office and visiting authors and what have you. Usually about the Arctic.
Last night's lectures were on cultural themes. The first was by the head of an art museum on the mainland. He talked about how the Arctic has been portrayed through the years, frequently by artists who had never actually been here, but worked only from narratives and rough sketches penned by explorers. That lecture was entitled "Imagining the Arctic".
The second lecture was by two people: the very energetic young powerhouse in charge of a symphony orchestra and opera company in northern Norway, and the composer she has commissioned to write a signature piece for the orchestra. The working title is "The Sound of the Arctic" and it attempts to recreate the emotional impact of the arctic soundscape. When the project was just getting started, my husband took the composer around and exposed him to the thunder of glacier calving, the cacophony of bird cliffs, the trills of flocks of little auks (remember them, Heather?), the whoosh of a whale exhaling, and the living silence behind all the other sounds. The composer has been working on it for two years now and has about two years to go. (Imagine that!) He had some parts recorded and played them during the lecture. They were absolutely stunning!
After the lectures, we were invited to a dinner with the three lecturers and a few local bigwigs. We wanted to talk with them, but we'd already had dinner and didn't want to eat another four-course meal starting at 9:45 pm. So I just had a glass of wine and my husband had an alcohol-free beer, as he was driving.
/Penny, about to leave the Arctic – but only temporarily

Good morning! Happy Friday! Crunches and Crockpots completed. Two of my kiddos have already arrived and had some breakfast, and are playing contentedly with the toys I have out.
Gloria-To get a picture from facebook to this site: download the photo onto your laptop or device, then when you come to this site and click on the attachment icon on that same device it will come up and you can attach it to your post.
Penny- Your days are busy, but sound like a lot of fun!
Karen NY- Happy 55!
Re- Happy belated birthday! Hope it was a good one!
Kate- Omigoodness! What a great picture! Is it your daughter and grand daughter? Looks like someone was having some fun!
Heather- So happy you are able to recoup some of that vacation fun!
Marni- How amazing that you had babies born in your back yard! Although, if you had to get back there, I imagine it would have been inconvenient.
Hey, thought I would share something with our friends living in the southwest. My cousin, John, is biking across the country. He started from his home in St. Petersburg, FL, he has pretty much followed the coast line through the southern states. He began his trip in November and has just left west Texas. He is riding anywhere between 30-60 miles a day, stopping at any place that looks interesting. He is aiming for the CA coast and then he will turn around and come back and head for some where on the New England area coastline, and then follow the coast back home to TX. He is living off a little savings and the kindness of strangers. He has met some wonderful people so far. Also spent some time riding with other adventurers doing the same sort of thing. If you are on facebook his site is John Garza bicycles America. He has a bit of a potty mouth, so if you watch his videos, be prepared.
Well, I better get off the computer and get busy with my day. ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)

Our new girl, Bess, is retriever/spaniel mix about 40 pounds. She was rescued with 35 other dogs near Houston from a woman who had all the dogs in her single wide mobile. Bess has been in foster care for two years while being treated for mange and heartworm. She has scars from the mange but finally tested negative for heartworm. She'll be on preventive treatments for both for the rest of her life. She is long haired black with some brown patches. The foster family says she is shy which will be perfect for Sasha who is mostly shy. Her expected arrival at Seatac (Seattle) is midday on Sunday.12
