@KatieJane83 - I've seen different elevation numbers from Garmin and Strava, and I'm inclined to trust Strava more than Garmin. Both pick up elevation from GPS location, but I think Strava takes data from multiple users into account. In any case, the run that convinced me was by the Charles River in Boston, from about 10 to 25 feet above sea level. Garmin had me going down to sea level every time I crossed a bridge. Strava understood the bridges, and even understood a pedestrian/runners' ramp to get from the river trail up to a bridge.2

Shade=doable for me sun= inner circle of Hell. I think you can do it if you let the sun get low and there's some shade you can catch.... But I'm a morning runner, so the whole evening run thing is out of my purview0 -

Today at 87 with reasonable humidity and sunshine felt almost as bad as 91 and high humidity but available shade in the evening felt last summer. This is not definitive, as I don't think I'm as acclimated to the heat as I was then; but where there was shade today that made a big difference.0 -
Dragged myself up to my friends quarry/dive centre to test my swimming wetsuit. A slight hangover after a few beers and a curry last night night - nothing that plunging into cold water wouldn't cure!!!!
Was hoping to be left alone to test the suit and just splash around - no chance, some friends were up there diving and insisted on watching and providing 'helpful' commentary....... What is it with people and girls dressed in rubber eh?
Did a couple of hundred yards, but I'm tired and my shoulders ache from Fridays efforts so kept it a short test swim, after all it was all about the suit anyway.
A few runs planned this week. All this talk about LT and heart rate reminds me too take them easy and slow.6 -

@skippygirlsmom Haha! Oh sorry about the cyclists! Yesterday I wanted to shove everyone that came within 3 feet of me. PMS, calorie deficit, humidity and heat, then DH kept running back to meet up with me, then would run ahead, and run back ugh. Im like "dude, you best just keep movin' forward if you don't want me to push you off this cliff and drown you".
I always sneak up running behind a group. I don't like them on my trail, so..... I'm passive aggressive. I really need to embrace yelling at them. I had one older guy nearly hit me cuz I spooked him. Haha! MY TRAIL! I'm the trail boogie monster!5 -
Goals for June:
1. To add 4th day to the running week - Going well so far with the only sticky spot being on Thursdays when I have to run before work at 4am.
2. To not puke, pass out or die while adjusting to the heat - Also going well but the month is young and it has not been that hot yet.
3. To stay healthy - So far so good but trying not to jinx it.
4. Make my running a priority, not the first thing that gets forgotten when work and family schedules get crazy - Also going well but last week I was on vacation so that made it easier.
5. To do a better job tracking miles and holding myself accountable - Not so well so far but we will see.
Running mileage goal :
I am planning on 4 runs a week of 2 miles each as a conservative goal so 40 miles.
Date Day Run Monthly total Needed
6/3 Sat 2.3 Mi 2.3 Mi 37.7Mi
6/3 Sun 2.0 Mi 4.3 Mi 35.7Mi
6/6 Tues 2.5 Mi 6.8 Mi 33.2Mi
6/8 Thurs 1.5 Mi 8.3 Mi 31.7Mi
6/10 Sat 3.1 Mi 11.4 Mi 28.6Mi
6/11 Sun 1.1 Mi 12.5 Mi 27.5Mi
If I do 4 miles on Tues and Thurs I will be right on track for the month. We will see how that goes.
I ended up doing the Cedar Point Run and Ride 5K over the weekend. I wasn't going to but I have completed it since the second year they started so why stop now? Plus the medals each have a different Peanuts character on them and they attach to form a roller coaster train so I REALLY need to collect them all to finish the train. Can't have an incomplete roller coaster after all. The weather was perfect and there were only about 2000 people signed up so it was a nice run. I did not race it but tried to fix some trends I see when I do race in preparation for longer races I have coming up. I worked on not getting rattled at the start with all the people around (music and ear buds helped), not going out to fast at the start and going faster in the second mile (wore my Garmin so I could see splits and pace), almost working on negative splits. Did not get the negative splits, but was able to accomplish everything else. Over all a good race, now I just need to get faster for my next 5k in September which will also be a hilly one.
2017 Upcoming Races :
6/10/17 Run and Ride Cedar Point 5K (maybe) - Done
9/9/17 Kick off 5k (race 2 of series)
11/19/17 Halftime 10K (race 3 of series)
2/4/18 Championship 5 miler (race 4 of series)
4/29/18 Akron Half Marathon (Can sign up for $26.50 by 8/1 without getting a shirt for full or half)5 -
I'm in ... not mileage but consisterly - 2 runs a week x11

June 6 - WooHoo I did it! Ran before work! 5.1 miles at 5am - 72 degrees and 90% humidity
June 8 -Weight training and then Spinning class.
June 10 -10.1 miles -
June 11 - 8 miles before a hike with a weighted backpack
It felt so very hot today! I did not manage the last 2 miles I was hoping to get in, but still hit my weekly total - which is better than I have been doing lately. Now I need to find a way to get another early morning run in this week.
Total - 42 miles

Felt much much better on my 12 mile run with my friend this morning.
Mostly recovered from last weekend's race, which is good as I'm planning on ramping back up my mileage in the next few weeks (as Trainingpeaks has two consecutive 50 mile run/200 mile bike/8000m swim weeks planned for me at the moment).
6/1 - 2 miles
6/3 - 3.5 miles
6/4 - 13 miles (1:36 run @ IM Raleigh 70.3)
6/6 - 3 miles
6/7 - 7 miles
6/8 - 3.5 miles (post ride)
6/10 - 10 miles
6/11 - 12 miles
Total: 53 miles
Goal: 180 miles
Remaining: 127 miles
2017 Race Schedule:
1/29 - Chilly Willy Duathlon (1:07:48 - 20:05 1st 5K/21:16 2nd 5K - 1st AG, 3rd Amateur)
2/5 - Best Damn Race 1:50 pacer
5/5 - Pittsburgh Marathon (withdrew at mile 16 - 1:32 split @ 13.1)
6/4 - Ironman 70.3 Raleigh - 4:43/1:36 run - Qualified for Ironman 70.3 World Championships
8/25 - Ironman Coeur D'Alene
9/10 - Ironman 70.3 World Championships
@mobycarp - Depending on if your Garmin watch has a barometric altimeter or not (most fenix/tri models do along with the 935), it'll either correct for elevation based on known topography if it just measures it with the GPS (which misses bridges/overpasses), or it'll just go by the barometric measured altitude. Definitely funny doing a route with both (as my 910xt has an altimeter, my 235 doesn't) and seeing the differences, especially when I'm running over bridges/overpasses/underpasses/rivers/etc...6 -
I'm getting a laugh out of the discussion around announcing you are about to pass vs just blowing right by! I seem to switch back and forth and have yet to find the right method that doesn't result in people getting the kitten scared out of them. When I announce myself to walkers in front of me (I don't pass runners because I'm too slow) they always jump and freak out. Even when they have a dog with them who knows I'm coming because, well, it's a dog! When I have a wider path and just go around, same thing most times.
Actually, just about a week ago I passed by some walkers unannounced because we had already seen each other as I was running up to the intersection, they were just a bit ahead of me by the time I turned on the path, I know they saw me, and should have been a bit aware I was coming, or so I thought. It was a teenage girl and her mom. I was about to go off into the grass to pass in order to give them the path when the daughter stopped to tie her shoes and the mom kept walking ahead. So I just weaved around really quick and as I was headed up to pass the mom her daughter shouted out really loud, "Mom, look out"! The mom leapt off the path freaked out and I said, "You're fine, sorry to scare you". Yeah, that was weird. I could have scared both of them, I guess, by just announcing myself. Not sure which is better. I always hear people behind me long before they pass, so announced or otherwise it doesn't bother me. The only time I remember being scared was when I heard dog tags clinging and closing in on me from behind really fast as two loose dogs flew by. That was nerve wracking knowing a dog was closing in and I had no clue what to expect.

Haha! @WhatMeRunning ! Oh I'm so glad I'm not the only kitten of a runner! Yesterday we had 2 very seasoned runners come up behind us. One announced something abrupt, like "Look out, coming through" which is fine with me. I instinctively move to the right. He chuckled and said something apologetic. No worries here man.
The times I announce my passing, they are just dumbfounded and it's usually easier just to weave past. Maybe I'll try "runner". Although, I may get called "liar" if they see me on a walk break. "Slogger"?
Anyone have tried and true suggestions?2 -
I've tried, "On your left" only to scare people and still have to move around, then apologize and look back if they were older. I recall passing an older guy on a hoveround one day and announcing I was passing because I didn't want to startle him. He went up out of his seat!! I looked back a bit later to make sure he was still upright.
I've tried, "Runner", and other things, can't recall the exact words, but whatever came to mind. Same thing. I might as we be wearing a Freddy Kreuger costume and be in a strobe light in a haunted house and step out from the shadows asking someone if they would kindly find it in their hearts to donate to charity.
I like the bikers with the little bell thingy. That to me seems the best way to rather unobtrusively let people know you're coming up. I guess I need to carry one of those on a wrist strap? I've also considered an air horn.6 -
ugh I just typed a long post and lost it! @elise4270 @whatmerunning I don't have the PMS excuse ha ha. I like the idea of an air horn. I try to make noise when I'm coming up behind walkers, I figure they must hear me breathing like a train coming behind them Sometimes I'll say I'm there so they know. This girl was doing like 1,000 miles on our 6 mile greenway so she was back and forth and back and forth just her RBF and was annoying me.2
-
I don't generally run where I have to pass a lot of people. I breathe really hard so I have a feeling they can hear me coming a mile away
I usually just run around them by going onto the grass. Usually they step out of the way especially if they are walking.
Once when I was on vacation in the Outer Banks I was walking on the shoulder of the road and a kid on a bike rammed right into my backside. He yelled out a split second before hitting me, didn't even give me a chance to move. I was pretty angry- his parents weren't even apologetic. They didn't even stop, just kept going. So rude.3 -
Hi all! I haven't forgotten about you guys, just have been pretty busy (like last month) and on top of that, my computer has decided to work only when it wants to and typing long posts on my phone is annoying. I've been reading some of the thread here and there. Congratulations to all those PRs and awesome races/runs I've seen lately!
6/1: rest
6/2: rest
6/3: 5 miles
6/4: 10 miles
6/5: 5 miles
6/6: rest
6/7: 5 miles
6/8: 4 miles
6/9: rest
6/10: 9 miles
6/11: 5 miles
TOTAL: 43/105 miles
I'm about to head into my third week of marathon training and the mileage has been either about the same or slightly less than what I was doing previously. I almost decided to jump in around week 3 or 4, but I'm happy with my decision not to since I've been adding in some hills and speed work as well as trying to acclimate to the sudden heat. Weekly mileage for June will look fairly similar to May, but mileage will definitely start ramping up after I return from vacation the first week of July.

I feel like everybody has a personal preference on this. The posted rules on the multi-use path that I run on a lot are that cyclists are to signal when passing. It doesn't say anything about runners. Personally, I'm grateful when someone on a bike announces themselves because I usually run with headphones in and can't always hear a bike coming up from behind. I also tend to run near the center line when I don't think anyone's around since the path is fairly sloped in places and I'll move over if I know someone's there. I don't really ever announce myself when I'm running past someone else and I don't really expect them to do that for me either. I may say "excuse me" if a particular group is taking up the whole width of the path, but this particular path is fairly wide and gets enough traffic that most people stay on their side of the center line. In the case that I'm coming up behind someone that I don't think knows I'm there, I'll usually cough or make some other noise to let them know I'm there...or just let them be surprised.
My step-dad has a big problem with people who say "On your left" during a race because he takes it to mean that they think their race is more important than his and that they think everyone should move out of the way for them. I think the few times this has happened to him has likely been a situation where the person didn't want an elbow in the chest rather than thinking he should move over for them.MNLittleFinn wrote: »VydorScope wrote: »It is in the 90's here right now. I was wanting to go to a group pub run tomorrow evening that one of the local running stores has every Monday, but it's supposed to be in the 90s tomorrow. Otherwise, I wasn't planning on running until Tuesday morning. I'm only supposed to run 3 easy miles so we'll see if I make it there or not. I haven't run in anything about 85 so far this year.

Well I did it, and my JLabs Epic 2 headphones died when I was couple miles from home. This is my third set ot die, the first set lasted like 8 months, the second less than 30 days (returned to store) and the third (new warrenty replacement for first set) less than 60 days. Not going to bother making a calim this time. Just will find a new brand.1 -
Well. Maybe I should put jingle bells on my feet. Ugh. That be SO annoying. I'll stick to scaring folks and not giving a kitten.5

Ran an easy 5K. Tommorow is weight lifting I might not run or maybe an easy 3.5K we shall see. I tried using Strava for the first time but my app got stuck on the settings screen and there was no back button, anyone have that problem happen to them? I am talking about the settings screen you get after clicking Record an activity and then the top left icon, where you can turn on auto-pause, beacon and stuff like that.

98 posts so will have some catching up to do.
@katharmonic Your "Hernia Hill" sounds like just about every hill in town that we run, except for the most challenging hill, all 7ft elevation of it - aptly called Sissy Hill. Actually it borders a historical property along the River bank owned by the Sisson Family so more of a play on their name.
10.5 km along the Riverbank tonight, for what is only my second run of the week due to all the work required for our local Heritage Run. Had to do the OCD Lap my street to get the 0.5.
06/02 15.0 km – 145.0 km - 15.0km
06/03 11.5 km – 133.0 km - 26.5km
06/07 5.66 km – 127.34 km - 32.16km
06/11 10.5 km – 116.84 km - 42.66km – YTD 621.41 Post Heritage Run Stretch & Relax
We hosted our Local Heritage Run Race today. At the start line at 0500 for setup/street barricades, marking etc. Tears down at 1300. 1400 sitting in the local Smitty's having Brunch with the other 9 members in the organizing group. It was a very cool day and overcast, perfect for running, not so much for being a Volunteer.
A small event - 94 participants between the 5, 10 and HM distances, plus 50 more in the Team Events.
Most of the Teams were families doing the 10k, except for one team of 10 kids from a local daycare ( all under 5 yrs ) that did 1k each with their adult chaperone. The best part all 9 were waiting about 50m out for there last runner so they came in as a big group of Giggling kids
As a small group we don't have Bling Bags, No medals this year due to a shortage of Sponsors, but a great shirt and only $25.00 with 80-90% donated to the museum. But for the kids we had Cookie Medals.
Okay so I am not a kid and a bad Cookie Medal Model, but a good Cookie Monster.
Now that it's done we can get back to a normal life routine.
@JessicaMcB Since the Smoky River outside GC drains into Peace River - How Much Rain did you get in your area?
I seen a post that the Hwy 40 had a Landslide / wash out and in Tumbler ridge the Murray River Road is washed out. The Peace River that runs through town gets water from the Smoky River and 4 other major rivers feeding into it that come out of the mountains/foothills and they had a major rain storm yesterday. This morning the water level had jumped by 3 meters ( ~ 9.8 ft ) from yesterdays level. There were so many trees floating down stream on the East bank that it looked like you could walk across the River on the Trees.7 -

I apparently still am about as graceful and quiet as a drunken elephant when running. Generally walkers will look back at me to figure out what in the holy heck is huffing and puffing and plodding and thumping behind them long before I am poised to go around. If I have an issue it is not because they do not know I am there, it is because they truly want to obstruct the entire path whether I am coming or not.
I appreciate bikers announcing themselves. But my brain has issues with the "on your left" bit. My brain hears that and directs me to MOVE to my left, not my right, and and I can't seem to train it otherwise. It is bad enough my running buddy has learned to just grab my arm and drag me the correct direction with her, if that is the notification given.

Om nom nom @juliet3455 ! Sounds like an awesome event!1
-
@orphia - ordered my shirt yesterday!
@juliet3455 - love the cookie medals and the kindergarten running group! So fun and so aewsome!
On the passing people subject - I always call out but from a ways back though... usually no one gets too startled unless I wait and am too close. I run with my dog and I especially want them to know I am passing, with a dog, if they are also walking with a dog. Often times people walking their dogs are clueless where or what their dog is doing even when on leash and they end up getting yanked around by their dog wanting to see or chase mine. I always keep mine on the side away from people, kids and other dogs if I can. He isn't mean, won't bite or growl but will bark if startled or threatened by another dog or a child. I had a similar experience as @zdyb23456 with a small kid on a bike coming right at us and not slowing or moving out of the way. I screamed at him and at his parents. Basically told them to control their kid if they didn't want him to get hurt or bit by a dog. Mine didn't react but he certainly could have. I do appreciate cyclists who let me know they are coming up behind me and when they don't I usually call after them that I would be happy to move out of their way if they would just let me know they are there.
I had a pretty great run today, tiring but so good! It was cool and drizzly out for almost the entire run and I don't think it ever got above 65F. The trail was pretty much empty and seemed a bit strange with no one else there, just me and all the birds who were also very quiet. I did discover that an area I like to run has been taken over by the homeless community with tents and garbage everywhere along the service trail I run along the river and all along the bike trail on the other side of the river. Mostly I haven't had any problems with them but they throw garbage on the ground that is bad for Hobbes the Vizsla so I probably won't be running that way any longer. There is not an easy solution but it is sad to see it becoming a huge growing community.
