Talking about this yesterdad I did a 15k - 9 miles under 29° C or 84° F and even though I took water before and after, when I got home after resting a little my blood pressure lowered I felt dizzy, I trowed out the water and amost fainted but I was fine after resting, could it be effect of dehydratation, an electrolite imbalance? the excercise wasn't too strenouss.
@Elise4270 @hanlonsk @WhatMeRunning runner problems, I feel you, I sometimes run outside of a sport center, it has a sidewalk to run around it with 5 entries to the facilities, so walkers are very often in the way, I never talk to them except to say thank you when they move aside, since the sidewalk is not too narrow I usually pass by the side, but when there are families obstructing all the road I have get down to the street, I don't like detouring to the street because there's a lot of traffic and something can happen and I'm extremelly grateful at the sensible people that moves when they see me.
I've never startled anybody passing them yet because is pretty common to see runners there, but bikers that pass me startle me. I'd be more glad if they announced themselves, though I'm always at the edge giving them room I just have to get used to it.

I don’t think passing/being passed by people is exclusive to being out running:
Whilst walking on the pavement (sidewalk or whatever you folks call it), you meet a couple holding hands coming towards you. Their lives/relationship would be utterly destroyed if they stopped holding hands for just the couple of seconds it takes for one to walk behind the other, and so you are forced to step into the road/oncoming traffic.
Running on scree with a sheer drop next to me – a runner comes up behind and overtakes on the inside. Mentally he got short shrift for not warning me – being startled in that location could have been so bad on many levels.
Cyclists too close – yup, many a time. Mostly I like to run on gravel tracks that make enough noise that I can hear them coming. I keep over anyway so there should always be room to pass. On the other hand, when I cycle, I call out ‘coming past on your left’ and have had rude comments that I don’t use a bell. At one point having a bell was almost made into law, but I prefer the whole conversation/warning thing. I don’t tend to run with headphones or at least make sure I can hear my surroundings.
Dogs on extending leads. I effing hate the things. It’s like piano wire/ankle amputation devices. Dogs should be on short leads or well-trained and off-lead. A large dog on a harness on an extendable lead is NOT under control. Mini-rant. Dogs should have time off-lead for their own mental health.
Groups of walkers. We call them ‘ramblers’ in the UK. They travel with poles, large daypacks and gaiters on well-managed paths. I met a large group whilst out for a run on a narrow track. They had a good twenty feet to see me coming. And STILL did not move out of the way. I have sharp elbows.
People in groups who don’t move, take up the whole track, or worse, stand on both sides of the path leaving a six inch gap in between for me to pass. My elbows are wider than six inches.
a local running group. I have changed where I run on the day they go out running. They run in a pack, and seem incapable of giving space for little old me. It’s like I should be the one stepping into the nettles (Ow-ee). I keep my elbows sharp and hold the line……7 -

Not sure, I am no doc. Did you only drink water or did you have a sports drink? Was this a new distance for you? Did you loose a lot of water weight? I can easily lose 10 pounds of water weight on a long summer run. I actually take an electrolyte capsule for every hour I run as recommended to me by a running coach. No idea if it helps or if it is a placebo though0 -
Chiming in on the passing conversation. I usually don't call out, unless there isn't a ton of passing space, or the person/group seems particularly oblivious. Then, I'll either say, 'on your left' or clear my throat loudly. I honestly don't know that there's a perfect solution, because I've been startled by people not calling out, but I've also been startled by the 'on your left' call, lol.
Yesterday though, there was a group of cyclists that really ticked me off, and I seriously regret not shouting something at them. I was on a lovely graveled, mixed-use path that runs along the river. There are walkers, people with dogs, adults and kids on bikes, runners, and even people fishing along the edge. And it can get decently crowded on a weekend. It also curves with the banks of the river, so you don't always have a long sight-line to see who or what is ahead. As I was running, I suddenly hear bicycle tires on the gravel, and two seconds later this single-file line of five cyclists on their road bikes go FLYING past me. This was also as I was going around a gentle curve, where you couldn't really tell if there might be more people just ahead. They did not call out or anything. This path, like I said, gets little kids running around on it, and people with leashed dogs, and if this speeding crew encountered something like that it could end very badly. I'm really quite irritated with myself for not shouting something after them, but it happened so quickly, and I was so startled, I was still struggling to get my thoughts together. Ugh.

@khtsmith83bea Welcome to the group!
@dkabambe Welcome back, great to see you again!
@WhatMeRunning @Elise4270 Lol at the airhorn and jingle bells! I've tried calling out to people as I come up behind them, only to realize they're listening to music that's so loud that even I can hear it as I'm passing them. The ones that annoy me most though are the dog walkers that stand on the opposite side of the sidewalk to the dog when it's sniffing or getting down to business, thereby taking up the entire sidewalk with the leash. Maybe I should become a hurdler instead.
It's a cutback week for me this week (yay!), so today's run was a lot shorter than normal (yay!), giving me the chance to have a little lie-in until 5am (yay!). Following the 80/20 running guidelines, this run was part of the 20% high intensity runs (boo!), and with temps at 77 degrees and 83% humidity (boo!), that amounted to 5.6 sweaty miles at an average pace of 7.36 min/mi. By the end, when I was stretching out, I felt like I was standing in sweat-puddles.

Goal for June. Finish Marathon training well, taper well and run Grandma's well
Nominal mileage goal: 100
Today's notes: It was HUMID out this morning. Temp was only 56, but the humidity really thumped me good. Kept my breathing in check for the run at 6-in/6-out, and a little at 6-in/4-out, but my HR ended up at 156. I'm pretty sure that was a dehydration issue, as I woke up pretty dry yesterday, after having had some Dr. Pepper yesterday afternoon.... note to self, caffeine after noon means sleep that isn't as good.
Looks like another hot one today, and it's a "work day" in prep for summer school, so I'll be in my classroom "working" until close to noon... time to Hydrate!
Have a runderful day all!

Humid and hot and tired legs, but it was okay.
I had to train Skip not to move to either side when someone calls they are passing on the left, just maintain where you are and they will go by. She thought they wanted her to move, no they just want you to know they are passing you. @girlinahat I think you pretty much hit every pet peeve I have. ha ha. I have not issues with doggie's not on leads at all, but honestly not everyone is a dog lover. Our rules for leashes is this, if I'm walking her around the hood she's on an extended leash, running 4' lead. At the greenway I usually take the extended leash but she stays on the right of me so she is off the path or directly in front of me. The minute I see or hear anyone she's pulled in to my side. She is never ever allowed to go across the entire path. Last year our greenways went from having a painted lanes for bikes and one for walker/runner to stay right pass left. Well I'm ready to take some black paint and cover up the lanes because people are confused. In general when I'm walking if someone coming at me is younger than me, they need to move out of my way on the path. Skip is taught to move out of the way of people older than her and I expect the same of others.

Thank you everyone for the well wishes. I'm still feeling pretty knocked down, but it's maybe because I can't take it easy. I love when my jobs tell me I can't call in sick again because my replacements aren't as good as me, or so they tell me
I think walking the 5k this Friday night is seeing as my only option. I haven't done anything workout related since last Sunday. It's Shaun T week on Beachbody this week, and I am bummed I don't have the energy or breathing capabilities to participate. I was thinking of trying very slow elliptical tonight. If I have to do a breathing treatment when I get home from work, that will answer that question. I feel like @WhatMeRunning and @MNLittleFinn with rest day (week) overthinking things haha2 -

@PinkamenaD8 I'd say you felt sick because of the heat and dehydration. Unless you have an existing health condition. Temps above 85 deserve a little bit of respect. Like @VydorScope mentioned, maybe add some electrolytes. It takes weeks to become heat acclimated. I find I do much better sipping iced nuun water the hour before a hot run. Definitely weigh before and after each hot run to gauge dehydration.
If you can plan it, make a stop at a water fountain and run water across your corotid artery, and back of your neck. Or a frozen water bottle to the same places will speed the cooling off process. I know it can throw off your groove, but until your body is okay with the temps it might help.2 -

6.2 mile run this morning. Total 57.8/150. Recovery run this morning. Thighs are feeling much better and walking is with no discomfort. Upcoming races:
June 24th Westfield Half-Marathon
October 14th Hartford Marathon
I may run some 5k summer sizzlers on Thursdays for fun.
I'll give a little shout out to my baby brother who ran his 5k on Saturday with a 22:15. He's running the half marathon on the 24th also and thinks he won't finish ahead of me, I think otherwise.8 -
Sunday, June 11 - 4 mile hike because I was too lazy to go running in the morning
Monday, June 12 - 6.3 mile run
June total - 37.9/100
Yeah, Sunday's long run did not happen. My only window was in the early AM and I greatly overslept. So I tried to salvage something out of the day by dragging my boyfriend along for a 4 mile hike in 90 degree heat. It wasn't so bad since the part of the Prairie Path we walked on was mostly shaded. I didn't sweat much; he did, however.
This morning was the usual fight to get going. I did have some caffeine this time (chai tea with milk) and it definitely helped. I felt much better and was able to keep it up for 10k, or three loops around the park. It was 74 degrees and somewhat humid at 6:00 AM, but it's much better than the 94 degrees it's supposed to get up to today.
I haven't had a good long run in a couple of weeks. I could have gone longer this morning but I ran out of time. I wonder if I can get myself out the door at 5:30 instead of 6. (LOL)6 -
Re: Passing.
Do not get me started. @girlinahat summed it up quite well. I absolutely hate when people are walking in a pack and refuse to give me even a few inches to pass them and so I either have to run on the grass or bump into someone. Usually at those times I will yell out "THANK YOU!" very sarcastically.
Other runners generally don't bother me since they're the ones passing me. I always run as far right as I can so that other runners or cyclists can pass me if they need to.
I've been startled many a time by cyclists flying past me without calling out or ringing a bell. I've even been splashed with gravel mud by them as they fly by.
It's worse for me when I'm walking. I walk very fast, and most other people walk very slow (IMO). Generally I will speed up to a run to pass them, but if I'm on my lunch break and not dressed for running, I'll just speed up my walk pace as fast as I can and scare the bejeezus out of whoever I pass because they are usually NOT paying attention to their surroundings.3 -
I wanted to test my "slow and easy" running pace over a mile today. I have observed that I run between 10:20 to 11:20 when I run as slow as I comfortably can and maintain proper running form while I'm out running my run/walk intervals.
After my recent sprint intervals I plugged in my best 400m time of 2:07 into the McMillan pace calculator and got an estimated 5k time of 35:56. I plugged that into the Daniels spreadsheet as my 5k time along with my updated MaxHR of 170, latest weight of 275 lbs, resting HR of 48, male, 45 years, 74 inches tall. It showed an estimated mile pace of 10:34, right in my comfortable running pace. Thus why I chose a mile as todays distance to maintain my "slowest running pace".
The idea was to do up to 3 one mile runs at the slowest I felt comfortable running at on the track at the local high school. With it being near my one mile pace, I knew I might not be able to do three of them, and might struggle with two. But in case I could run slow enough I might be able to do them.
I did my run/walk in easy effort HR ranges (Karvonnen Z2-Z3) to the track which is 2.5 miles away. Then I started running that first mile as slow as I could go with good form on the track.
I felt like I kept a steady pace and could have pushed at the end or could have gone a little faster and finished it in 10:49, just 15 seconds slower than my estimated best mile time.
I did a half mile recovery run/walk at easy HR effort, then started my second mile attempt. I made it short of half a mile before my legs were too tired to maintain the pace. I finished that mile with fartlek type intervals in 12:26.
I cancelled my 3rd mile attempt (and the half mile recovery preceding it) and did a 2.5 mile cool down run/walk home at east HR effort, totaling 7.6 miles for the day. I felt I had done enough and any more was asking a bit much.
Garmin shows today's aerobic impact at 3.9 so that mile plus the second attempt had quite an impact on that calculation.
According to the updated Daniels info, my 5k pace is 11:34, which is just a bit slower than my current slowest comfortable pace. So between now and my 5k's that is the gap I am trying to close.

RE: passing by people. Sometimes I stomp my feet a little louder than normal or cough a few times as I am approaching. And as @WhatMeRunning said, sometimes it doesn't matter what you do, you still startle people. I even did the "on your left" thing. Then there's the earphone people which annoy the crap out of me. Especially the ones that walk right down the middle of the path and slowly sway left and right. Like, pick a side and keep it.
Saturday I was running the greenway late in the morning and there were these ladies with strollers side by side. I passed them once. No big deal since it was a wide path and no one was coming in the opposite direction at the time. But the next time I passed them, they "parked" their strollers on the path as their kids were playing to the side on the grass. One was pulled over to the side next to the grass but the other just left it right in the middle of the path. That annoyed the crap out of me. No consideration for other people using the path.4 -
@RespectTheKitty you keep getting out the door for runs. You might not like how far you run, but you get out there. That puts ahead of most of the population, and shows your determination.3

@stoshew71 since we run on the same greenway you'll appreciate this. Yesterday I think every single person from the Chinese church up on Old Madison Pike was walking the greenway after church. All in bunches, all walking next to each other, all on the wrong side. Really? My biggest pet peeve is people who let their dogs poop on the greenway itself and don't clean it up. What is there about 15' of grass on each side of the greenway right? Now I will admit from time to time I'll leave my doggie bag behind, but I always pick it up on the way out. They need to put trash cans out there like Bradford has. I don't want to carry my doggie poop bag for 4 miles thank you.2

That drives me nuts. I always pick up after my dogs. Once I saw a lady who I know never picks up after her dog. Her dog was pooping and she was yacking away on her phone. I stopped and handed her a waste bag and said, "Did you need a bag? I have extras." She did pick it up that time.4 -

Ha! Here is one that fits on your wrist so you don't have to carry it. It can double as a hydration /cooling system.

Tempting!1 -
On the passing thing I have a pet peeve about cars and intersections. I don't mind a car that goes fast enough to get through the intersection before I do. I don't mind the ones considerate enough to let me pass. I hate the ones that are determined to make me stop. If I wave them forward they don't go and if I try to go though the intersection it only after I commit that they go. I usually try to pass behind these vehicles, but they just don't get it. Because I don't trust bikes I usually avoid bike paths. I know that I am hazardous on a bike and I don't wish to put anyone on a bike in the challenging position of trying to pass me.3

Aw, thank you dear. I do try my best. I have to remind myself sometimes why I run. I run for the sense of peace I get from it. As a person with chronic anxiety, that's a big deal.3 -
Did a bit of a hilly route today and my running partner fell apart a few miles in. Still, got through 4 without him at a reasonable pace and managed a decent pace. Planning to go heavy today on bike/swim as well and will take a light running day tomorrow as I've been at 10+ miles for 3 days in a row.

I'm jealous!! I would love to get back into martial arts! A few years ago, I did Taekwondo. I stayed with it for about 3 years, before life got in the way. These days, I work nights, and no one offers classes during the daytime. Sigh.
Good luck with C25K! It's really a great program.0
