Cool and drizzling. Not bad for 7 miles. Ran 8:46, 8:19, and 8:25 for my last three miles.4 -

Even more than pavement running, it's definitly ok to walk up the hills on trails. Right now, on my long runs, I'm walking up most of the hills on the trails I'm "running". As I get back into form, I'll run more of them, but I'll still power walk the steepest, baddest hills. Over time you develop an efficient power walk and can often walk up a hill as fast as run up the hill, and do so with less energy expended.
If trail running in the foothills seems intimidating, look at it from another perspective. Go hiking in your running shoes and run the trails when they seem flat enough, or if the hill is small enough. There no magic ratio of running/walking which delineates hiking from trail running so after a while you'll call it trail running. That hilly hike with a bit of running mixed in will definitely help your pavement running.

I got up to try a run and it just isn't happening. I can get through my workout ok. I can get through the warm-up doc wants me to do before running but I can't get more than .5 mile before the ham is screaming. So I just walked. Keep taking it easy. I just ordered my swim cap, googles and suit, so I start swim training next week. Hopefully that will help.
Sorry you're hurt. That's just no fun. I hope you enjoy the swimming. Are you working with a PT?
My pt is doing dry needling and it's helped. Although, she hasn't done my hamstring that seems to really need it. Yesterday was the second session and I didn't have the referred pain patterns- I'm hoping that means it's calming down.
You're in Texas... Ugh so you'd need a a doc to order your pt. I think they can assess you without an order, just not treat. But, if you wanna come up here to see Sheri at Ardmore physical therapy with me.....
@Elise4270 yes I am seeing a PT. She is amazing! She is also very frustrated with my body! HAHA. Last appt she said "Ok, lets start over". She thinks I'm wonky. LOL, well yes I am, but what about my body? Due to a really old injury, I am off balance. So I am working on a lot of core/glute exercises to strengthen the weak side, specific warm ups before run (when I am able to get back to that) and balance. Yoga would be my friend right now. I would love to find a class but having a hard time due to the locale that I work in. I should just do it at home, but it is about one of the only things that I actually like doing a class for.1 -

Me and @juliet3455 run trail in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. Mountain running is fun, if you have a group you could try it out with you might fall in love. I take no responsibility if you do
I think I would like doing it in a group. I was just looking at some running camps/retreats to hook up with some of those folks. I'm pondering a few new goals to tackle after my first HM. Right now it's a toss up between trying to age-group-finish-top-three at the 10k distance (I am consistently finishing in the top 5, so reasonable), or work on something like trail running or running more collaboratively.
I've conned my 13 year old son into running the 2k and the 1M at my next two races. He didn't enjoy cross country the two years he did it, but he plays soccer and runs a ton.3 -

First run in my new shoes and it felt amazing! My hips and calf don't feel wonky at all! I was patient and waited for the GPS to sync up so I could make sure I nailed the 5 miles. I went out in my tights and long-sleeve "warm shirt." Should have worn my coat, also. My stomach was quite pink and I definitely felt cold at the end of my run. Still figuring out how warmly to dress based on actual temp. Today was 28F when I headed out, so I'd venture to guess that anything below freezing needs a coat. Lesson learned. Also, I need a better hat or ear band, with a little more ear flap action.
Also note: Going to invent a shirt with a tissue-dispensing forearm sleeve. My running nickname should be "snotter."
I would buy this shirt in a second.4 -
@juliet3455 That is so true. Funny thing, when I went for my first run with my pacer for Wild Duluth, he had forgotten his headlamp. So, what did we do? we went for a run up and over the peak with me leading the way.3

@RespectTheKitty I'm sorry that you're going through such a rough patch with the meds. I hope things even out and improve greatly soon!
In other news, I ran a nice and cool 3 miles this morning. I'm still trying to figure out what the heck I'm going to do with myself now. Not ready to commit to a marathon. Trail running looks intriguing. So do mudder type races. I'd really have to work on the upper body strength this winter, though.2 -

a Tough Mudder or Spartan race would you to combine running and upper body strength into one race..... Trail running is addictive, don't get into it unless you want to get into something that makes you want to do nothing else.....3 -

@fitoverfortymom and @skippygirlsmom You don't need a tissue-dispensing shirt. I discovered a solution during ragweed season last year. Get an armband phone holder like the picture below. Instead of a phone, put a travel pack of tissues inside of the pocket. Works like a charm.

That is genius. Otherwise, armband phone thingies are utterly useless.3 -

11/04 - 13.0 miles
11/05 – 4.0 miles
11/06 – Unplanned Rest Day
11/07 – Rest Day
11/08- Rain Day
17/126 miles
Behind on miles for this month, I may go to six days running with one rest day up until the last week of November. The HM will be on Dec. 2nd. I was traveling on Monday and Tuesday of this week, and I have planned travel next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, so I will have to see how everything goes.
@_nikkiwolf_ - I think it is time for the battery on my phone to be replaced. I only had my running app open on Saturday. The phone did the same thing to me on my 4 mile run on Sunday. My husband is looking into replacing the battery. And I never count workout clothes – I like them all and too scared to find out how many I have!
@girlinahat – Love the piggies! I will show picture to my daughter tonight – she loves animals. My other two children are asking for Guinea pigs for their birthdays, so we might be adding to the family soon. The pet store told her to leave Oreo (name for the Guinea pig) in the cage for 48 hours to let it get used to us, but my kids took her out after about 24 hours. Several years back, a friend of mine purchased 2 Guinea pigs from the pet store, asking over and over again if they were both male and being reassured that they were. But her Guinea pigs multiplied quickly. I think at one point she had a total of 12.
@karllundy – My kids have fallen in love with Oreo – so the little piggy is staying. This one is shy but seems to be warming up to everyone in our household.
@oprphia – Love the picture from your 35km.
@skippygirlsmom – I have two dresser drawers full of race t-shirts that I want made into quilts someday.
@katharmoni – My daughter loves all animals and wanted a cat, but since we have a dog, I told her she had to choose something else. Also, she can’t have any snakes or lizards in the house.
@WandaVaughn – Congrats of your first HM and Happy Belated Birthday!
@PastorVincent – A coworker of mine does the Disney World Dopey Challenge every year – injury forced him to sit out this year. He loves the Dopey challenge.
@RespectTheKitty – Hope you feel better soon!
@JessicaMcB – I need to add “they are already effing up” when I awake in the morning and want to sleep in. I use this a lot:
@amymoreorless – Awesome idea for the tissues!
Upcoming Races:
12/02/2017 – St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend – HM
01/13/2018 – Louisiana Marathon Weekend – Quarter Marathon
02/17/2018 – Mardi Gras Mambo 10K

Super busy for a while and didn't get a chance to report. I am falling a bit behind (missed a running day because I ran out of time right before an out of town trip) but did get in my longest run all year (10 mi) on Sunday. @PastorVincent you need to take off that 30k option off your race list. You know that @JessicaMcB and I are going to talk you into the 50k.4

So today was that in between temperature when it is not really clear what to wear. I mean when it is 20F I know to grab my cold gear and etc. When it is 60F I know heat gear time. But today was 45F or so at the start with a gentle wind. Not really warm enough for full heat gear, and full cold kit would have killed me. Decided on long sleeve insulated top, and shorts.
Ran at what I thought was a "comfortable pace" - trying to learn to run by feel and not depend on the watch so much. Well ended up at a 9:09 avg pace with 751 feet of elevation (Garmin corrected value). I definitely could have kept going, but I ran out of time.
A 9:09 is a 4-hour marathon, so I am getting there! If I can learn to run about a 9 min pace in training, then I could probably push to 8:45 or a bit faster race day. The only question now is can I hold that pace for 18 more miles! If the weather holds I plan to attempt 15 miles @ 9 min pace this weekend, but not looking promising right now.

HA! I am seriously thinking about it... if it was not SIX DAYS after my planned PR attempt Pittsburgh Marathon, I would do it for sure. Also, it would be my first trail race ever - and I was told it was a "technical trail" (3rd hand though)- not sure what that means, but I assume that means it is hard.1 -
OH! Forgot the picture I took...Cool color effect on the horizon at sunset. I am facing slightly east of south, in the Northern Hemisphere so the setting sun well off to my left out of the frame.

Question for the techies (and probably even the non-techies) from the technically challenged: I forgot my Garmin today so I downloaded the RunKeeper app to track my run. How do I sync that to Strava? I know it's probably really simple, I just don't know what I am missing.0
