Sorry you are having a rough go @RespectTheKitty . Do you do find you have SAD features? My OCD always gets out of hand this time of year and my dose climbs to match basically. Just a thought

Got maybe an hour of sleep after finally settling her down before my alarm went off to lace up and I had a moment of, "Maybe I'll just sleep." before "There are people with more going on than you, that are naturally better runners and are already effing up. MOAR WORK!" seized the day once more
Here's to hoping Mia considers sleeping tonight though because I'm dead on my feet and I still have so much work to do before I can go to bed.

Real goals: Stay healthy. Build base. Prepare for Club Nationals in early December and the start of Boston training in late December.
Today's notes – Great running weather, wear tights and don't sweat up a puddle! Tonight's speed work assignment was challenging: 1 mile at T, 2 x 200 at R w/200 recovery, 3 miles at T, 4 x 200 at R w/200 recovery. Just what I need to develop my cardio conditioning; but my ankle hasn't been delighted with the beatings I've given it the past week. So I toned it down.
I ran 1 x 1600 at T (6:25 actual vs. 6:32 target) with 400 recovery, then 4 x 200 at R with 200 recovery (42.5, 42.0, 42.4, 41.1 vs. 42-43 second target). That, plus a 2 mile warmup and 2 mile cool down, was enough for today. The ankle noticed the beating, but seems to be okay after being iced down.
I'm into a mentally challenging phase of training. I can run fast, but it's a guessing game how much volume my ankle will tolerate. For now, I'm being cautious with the speed work and saving the ankle for race day. This may not produce the fastest race I can run; but it has a high probability of producing a race that I finish.

Off on a road trip for 2 days and 151 posts behind.
Never got back to the hotel until 8/9 each night and just mentally whipped plus wickedly dark so no running this week yet . Will try to catch up on everyone's good adventures, hoping the bad ones involving cars and our favorite virtual Daughter/Niece/GodDaughter etc ( Skip of @skippygirlsmom ) goes away.
But a friend in our local running club dropped this little gem into our FB site. Especially for @JessicaMcB , @MNLittleFinn , @7lenny7 and anyone else who has done a Trail Event or just enjoys dragging a friend out for a "Short Trail Run".
When I read it I thought of 4 people who came out for our Local 7 Peaks challenge ( 34-36 km & 7 Hill Climbs ).
We declared them to be Event Champions, 2 ladies who had never done more than a HM, one lady who biggest hill would look like something from Florida, and one guy who didn't quite realize how big/steep some of the early hills were and only had one HM Distance.2 -

4 mile regular run. 34 degrees, first time since March I had to wear a jacket. Boo. It ended up being a bit too warm. Next time just long sleeves.

@MobyCarp What exactly happened to your ankle anyway? I keep reading you mentioning it being injured, but obviously that happened before October when I started reading the monthly challenge threads.
Seconded, though I can't remember what happened. While we're on the subject... every day I see @MobyCarp post about his workout, then inevitably he/you post about your ankle hurting and having to ice it.
I hope you don't think I'm being confrontational, but I really wonder if you need to rest a lot longer, and get more tests done.
Also, isn't icing just preventing the natural healing process from happening? Assuming it's even an inflammation-based injury?
Sorry, Moby. I'd just hate to lose one of my major running inspirations due to permanent damage.0 -
@juliet3455 that trail run post is very very true.
I see invites from my club all the time which say things like - anyone fancy a run on Sunday, leaving at 7am?
What this ACTUALLY means is anything upwards of 20 miles, probably up a mountain, and will almost certainly involve getting wet, either rained on or due to the river crossing.
Most trail races I do are ‘ish’ distances. Such as Half-Marathon-‘ish’. This is mostly because it’s very difficult to design a trail route at a set distance, and also because most people who run on trails are generally masochists, interested in beasting another hill and leaping over unknown terrain. You only have to read of the exploits of such fell-running acolytes such as Josh Naylor and latterly Killian Jornet (who solo-ed Everest 48 hours after he first did it, because he’d had an upset stomach the first time and wanted to see if he could do it quicker).
And most trail routes are flat. Honestly. Totally and utterly flat. You will never ever find a hill on a trail route.

A short run this morning. It was very nearly a hide under the covers morning, but I made myself and my aching right hamstring get up and get out. Felt really good, but obviously feeling good and thinking you are going pretty fast doesn’t actually translate to numbers on the page….but I’m ignoring data and just getting out doing it for now.
It was about 3 degrees out there (which you weird people would call 37-38 degrees). I don’t think it’s yet time for a long-sleeved top, but gloves would’ve been a good thing as Raynauds stole two of my fingers for the whole time I was out. Generally I can only tolerate running in glove liners before my hands get all sweaty and goo-ey. The pair I bought from MEC in Canada about seven years ago are falling apart, is that a good enough excuse to travel back there?
Another 2 miles ticked off. It’s actually helping the muscle soreness by being active. Next CrossFit torture session is Friday, but I have a day out in London at meetings tomorrow so plenty of walking around planned.

Flight got in really late last night and then I was too hyper to sleep. So didn't even attempt to run with 3-4 hours sleep. But packed my gym bag and hope to hit the gym after work for strength training - or something or other.

Today's notes- Today's assignment was 1 hour easy trail run. Run ended up being 59:53, so it looks like I have my timing down about right. Average pace was 14:37 which, with the hiking through the snow, seems OK to me. Last mile was sub-10, cruising downhill while hoping I didn't end up sliding on my *kitten* the whole way down. Trails were easier to find today. Someone else has been out there and they hit the trails I wanted, so I was able to just follow their tracks.
It was kind of cold today, but not really, at 29F. However, I did get to run through a small man-made snow storm, as the snow making machines were in full use on the ski slopes. That was kind of cool.

@7Lenny7 - Hills...exactly! I used to always have issues going down stairs after a race, added hills and it isn't a problem. Like on of my running friends says: "You don't have to love hills, just love what they do for your body."0 -
3 miles with the boys late last night (Kody and my youngest son). My son's fitness is definitely improving in just three runs. First run was 2.5 miles with 3 walk breaks. Last night was 3 miles with 1 walk break. Unfortunately some pain developed in front of his hip right at the end. Kudos to my son. We started our run at 10pm and it was clear he wasn't excited about going and I expected him to try to get out of it, but not one word about skipping it and he seemed to be glad he did it at the end.
I may not get any more runs in for a week. I need to finish packing for our hunting trip this weekend. I'm really tempted to pack my running bag. There are some beautiful section lines around my mom's property that I'd love to run but then I'd miss out on some of the morning socializing and that's a big part of the trip. Service is sketchy out there so I'll likely not be checking in.
@juliet3455 LOL! Someone posted that to one of my trail running FB groups as well. My favorite lie is "All paces welcome" but then I often see some poor newbie getting left in the dust or being forced to make their run a tempo run to to keep the group in sight.

Another non-eventful run yesterday evening before heading home to grab Stella for a second non-eventful run. Today we have sunshine, so at least I will be able to look at pretty sunsets over the hills when I start my run. Forgot my Garmin at home though. I will probably just repeat yesterday's run so I can log an accurate distance. i probably should just take a rest day and do some yoga at home, but I am excited about the sunshine. It's been a while!
@Elise4270 - Woman, we have got to get you fixed up! I can't imagine how frustrating this constant string of injuries must be for you, yet you always manage to keep a sense of humor about it. You deserve some pain-free living and a nice, peaceful run!
@RespectTheKitty - I hope you get this med situation figured out soon. Kudos to you for hanging in there through it all. I admire your grit.
@girlinahat-Have you tried running with mittens? I have Reynaud's as well. As soon as the temps fall into the 50s I am rolling out the gloves or I have nothing but a painful burning sensation in my fingers. I have found that mittens seem to help stimulate the circulation, I think because of the warmth of the neighboring fingers. They may also help with the sweaty and goo-ey thing

Thanks for all your well wishes. The doctor says I am experiencing something called akaphisia which is a side effect from one of the new meds. She says that Benadryl helps with that, and it does, but it's still a royal pain in the *kitten* having to deal with it. It's a horrible, jittery, restless feeling that sends my anxiety into overdrive. The doctor assures me it will pass and I just want to know WHEN! Arrrgh.
In addition to all that, my IBS is acting up big time also. Double whammy!
As of right this minute I am feeling ever so slightly better so I'll take that as a good sign. I may try running again tomorrow (tonight is bowling).6 -
9 mile run this morning. 2 mile easy, 5 miles tempo with 1 min recovery every mile, 2 miles easy/cool down. Though, the 2 mile "cool down" didnt feel easy at all. Got to test out my new shoes so thats always fun. Actually, they are the same brand style (Altra Torin 2.5) I wore at my last half marathon but I found them on amazon super cheap since they are technically last years model but I love them so much I am glad I found them. I have the 3.0 now as well but the 2.5 have slightly more cushioning which feels better on the longer runs.
Weather: 74 but with the heat index of 80f. The sun was nice and bright today so I just told myself I was "working on my tan" as I sweated away.

I usually run intervals but today I just wanted to run so that's what I did. It was a great 4 mile run. I really needed it. All this stress with having t ok have the gas lines at the house replaced is getting me down. It was nice to just run and not worry about it for a little while. I was cold though. I don't know how you Northerners do it. It was only 57°F. I am definitely a wuss when it comes to cold weather.
I'm not too far from you and this morning walk, not run (boooooooo) was COLD!!! you would think being from CO that I wouldn't think 44 is cold but I've been down south way too long!0 -

@RespectTheKitty Girl I totally understand!! But you know, just keep checking in with us! I know we (figuratively, because I am anything but fast) are a fast moving group of runners but we also know that things happen. Just live today and tomorrow will be what ever it will be. @seanevan10 It is raining and and 40F here. I will probably miss my run today. I just don't think I can make myself get out there. Maybe if it quits raining by this afternoon, but it is unlikely. I have handbell choir practice today at 5:30 and I still have no hot water. I don't want to come in cold and wet from a run and not be able to take a shower right away especially when I have to be somewhere.

@girlinahat your post cracked me up about the runs, we are lucky that most of the group “leaders” in this area are very honest, brutally honest sometimes. You always see things like “no sweep we are running 8:00 min pace” “HILLS HILLS HILLS VERY BIG HILLS” “this is NOT a beginner trail run” of course there is also the “no runner left behind” “paces for everyone from 7 to 14 mins”

First run in my new shoes and it felt amazing! My hips and calf don't feel wonky at all! I was patient and waited for the GPS to sync up so I could make sure I nailed the 5 miles. I went out in my tights and long-sleeve "warm shirt." Should have worn my coat, also. My stomach was quite pink and I definitely felt cold at the end of my run. Still figuring out how warmly to dress based on actual temp. Today was 28F when I headed out, so I'd venture to guess that anything below freezing needs a coat. Lesson learned. Also, I need a better hat or ear band, with a little more ear flap action.
Also note: Going to invent a shirt with a tissue-dispensing forearm sleeve. My running nickname should be "snotter."

Last month, I crossed paths with a friend of mine on the 18th mile of a 50kilometer race. While we passed in opposite directions, as I was truly concerned if it was possible for my hips to snap in two and fall off of my body, we acknowledged each other. After our initial greeting, and my mentioning that I thought I was dying of dehydration, she very matter-of-factly asked me, “Some of us are thinking about attempting a 100miler next year, are you interested?” (Who the hell asks these kinds of questions? Especially at a time like this?)

@jessicamcB You are a super warrior! Getting up in the dark with kids that don't sleep and hand-washing clothes!!! Seriously, Wonder Woman!

I can get through the warm-up doc wants me to do before running but I can't get more than .5 mile before the ham is screaming. So I just walked. Keep taking it easy. I just ordered my swim cap, googles and suit, so I start swim training next week. Hopefully that will help.3 -

@7lenny7 I would just enjoy the hunting trip! Hopefully you have better luck than Ben did on the weekend- tracked deer for something like seven hours and then his buddy just couldn't make the shot. He was not amused when he got home

In theory, trail running is something that I would enjoy, but I live in the foothills near Denver, CO, so trail running here is really code for "running up a big *kitten* mountain." I wish we had flat, meandering dirt paths with a few rolling hills baked in, but nope, we have the Rocky *kitten* Mountains.2

I just ordered my swim cap, googles and suit, so I start swim training next week. Hopefully that will help.

My pt is doing dry needling and it's helped. Although, she hasn't done my hamstring that seems to really need it. Yesterday was the second session and I didn't have the referred pain patterns- I'm hoping that means it's calming down.
You're in Texas... Ugh so you'd need a a doc to order your pt. I think they can assess you without an order, just not treat. But, if you wanna come up here to see Sheri at Ardmore physical therapy with me.....0
