    I don't know if you can do anything like that other than something like google maps or mapquest turn by turn directions (you can choose walking routes but I find them slow to respond sometimes so I would think it would be difficult during a run, but haven't tried it). But I just want to assure you that running along the Charles is very easy to navigate! You can hardly go wrong because the big old river is right there. Run along one side, pick a bridge and cross over and run back. I was completely unfamiliar with Boston and did just fine my first visit.     Running plans A and B didn't pan out today, but my plan C (running solo at home after work in the dark) turned out to be really nice. It was actually a really nice evening (55 degrees!) so I even stretched it from the planned 3 miles to 4 because it felt so good. That hasn't happened in a while.

    So just under my goal of 90 miles and still have 2 days left. I didn't think I was going to get there this month so I'm really pleased with that.

    No clue on the GPS device, but the last time I was in Boston my hotel provided a small brochure with several running routes around the Charles River. Pick your distance, pick a route, look at the map. Street signs are clearly visible. Turns are incredibly easy to find, even if you've never been there before. It's a lovely place to run, at least in good running weather. (Cue Ranulf Fiennes: "There is no bad weather, there is only inappropriate clothing.")

    Of course, I *was* there on Patriots' Day weekend; but those brochures are printed in bulk, they ought to have them year round.

    I made my monthly goal today. I didn't go to the track since my husband is still down in his back. The track is too boring by myself, but not so bad with someone else even if we aren't actually running together. I decided to do the Zombies Run Interval Training today. It is time based not distance based. It was pretty fun as intervals go.

    There is so much going on it is hard to keep up on my phone. @Elise4270 I hope things get better with your son soon and with you.

    @jessicamcb Wow! What a great article. I remember your race report from Whistler and it still brought tears to my eyes. You really are an inspiration and your daughters are very lucky.

    Non-running check in: This morning I was able to jog my hallway to time the cooking eggs. Felt as good as I did a week ago, when I went out and ran 4 easy miles in the evening. Then I felt less good on Wednesday, rested then, raced Thursday, and got into the scary injury/recovery situation.

    So . . . running when I felt like I do today didn't work out so well last time. Rest day today. Went to club practice. Talked to some of the guys on the 60+ and 70+ teams. Consensus is that resting is the better thing for me to do right now. Running today is not that important; being able to run on December 9 is.

    Next decision made, take a rest day tomorrow. If I feel great tomorrow, like I can really run, I'll consider an easy run on Thursday.

    Getting old is not for sissies.

    @katharmonic and @MobyCarp - thanks for the info on your experiences and I'll give it a go. It didn't look too bad in the map, but when you're at ground level it always seems so foreign, lol.

    I was thinking back to my trip to Dallas earlier this month and how I couldn't find a way to get back to the trail and roads didn't have sidewalks. I wasn't lost and knew which way I needed to go, just an issue finding a safe way to get from A to B.

    @PastorVincent definitely you want trail specific shoes for the 50k. Even if you barely run in them again, they will be worth it just for the advantage they give you in mud/across rocks etc. Having said that, I've run with a guy who was in worn flat Nike's across a very technical trail for 20 miles or so. But that's probably to do with training and experience.

    I saw the difference in my vivobarefoot trail shoes just on one run. On rocks they were rubbish and I just slid off. On mud and grass they were amazing.

    Inov-8 do two fittings and have a range of trail shoes which are well regarded.

    white clothes - white clothes are the mark of the newbie trail runner. Our running club recommend wearing the shiniest newest clothes and shoes for our off-road runs. Mostly so we can point and laugh later.... Part of the fun of trails is running straight through puddled like a four year old.

    just an aside - you still use DDT? Wasn't that banned in the 1970's?

    generally it translates to something that is challenging, and doesn't have a firm consistent surface. So a technical trail might be full of loose rocks, or even big rocks you literally need to climb over or pull yourself up with your hands. There may be scree on the descent or tree roots to navigate - anywhere that there's a lot of obstacles in your way preventing you from following a straight line along the trail. You may need to pick your way through, OR you may need to just hurl yourself at it with scant regard to the safety of your body. Proprioception and muscles you never knew got involved in running will suddenly make themselves known on a good technical trail. You might even need hiking poles.

I have been gone for about a year, but it feels good to be back and see old friends still here. The past year of my life has been like doing a hundo in my bare feet, but I think I'm finally back on track...lol

    @lporter229 My TomTom Adventure (and some other TomTom running watches) can connect to bluetooth headphones and play music. But I guess unless you are in the market for a new running watch anyway, that solution might be a bit expensive.

    @JessicaMcB Looking at that power line photo is giving me ideas... We have a cable car going up a mountain near here, I guess that might also be a "fun" place to run.
    The top half of the "trail" is already covered in snow and might be too slippery, but I'm not sure I'd manage to get that far up, so that shouldn't be a problem ^^

    @MNLittleFinn I've washed running shoes in the machine more than once. Like @7lenny7 , I take out the laces and insoles first. And I use the "silk & wool" cycle. Since I don't have a boot dryer, I just stuff them with paper towels to dry the inside quickly.

    @7lenny7 Taking enough rest to heal the knee now, before it gets worse, is the wise decision. My niggle from last week is completely gone after 5 days of rest. I regret missing the chance to go for a long run on the weekend, but I didn't want to have to deal with knee pain on and off again for the rest of the year or longer.

    I know some people fall out of bed and run before breakfast, I don't know how you do it! I tried it today - I had a blood test for a medical checkup scheduled and was supposed to show up fasted. So I figured in the time I usually spend preparing and eating breakfast, I could go running instead. But I felt really 'meh', so I stopped after 1.4km. I have no problem running late in the evening when lunch is already 8 hours ago, no problem. But I'm not awake enough in the morning to run without food.
