WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR JANUARY 2018

Lanette - no, we will sign in front of any notary here, and FedEx to the title company. As we're receiving money, instead of giving it out, it's a much less onerous process on our side.

Well done to all the losers! :drinker: Every single pound is an achievement.
Tere - that's brilliant.
KJ - Not weighing yourself for ages is generally not a good strategy. I've found I can kid myself.
I've just done Day 1 Week 4 of c25k. Proud of myself. My knee held up, which is my main worry. It is really only a shuffle, but much better than nothing. I feel so good afterwards. And it is only my "bonus: exercise!!!!
As I shuffle around the lanes people seem really amused to see me as they are out walking their dogs etc. They nearly all greet me with a big smile. Seeing an elderly woman with pink trainers and earpods shuffling about must be quite funny I think!
Good news on the Burns Night front. I texted my brother and his wife and they said they are arriving at 6 pm Thursday. Plus they are back on the booze! :drinker: So they will be able to toast the haggis when I stab it! Marvellous. I've got to go out tomorrow to get "neeps and tatties", and cream and chives to make the whisky sauce. Dessert is homemade raspberry sorbet/ice cream with superthin biscuits and starter will be nibbles in the living room of homemade yogurt cheese and smoked salmon on my Volkornbrot that I got from Lidl. I bought some beautiful cocktail napkins for that in a silver and blue "mermaid scales" pattern. For the table I have a red tartan runner and red napkins. And two "wee Jimmy" hats for the men to wear. I have my bagpipe music downloaded.
Friday I will do my exercises and my day 3 week 4 run before setting off to London for the SingalongaSoundofMusic.

Heather, you have some fun times coming up!
Lanette, you mentioned war brides. My next door neighbour is a 92 year old war bride from Italy. Her British soldier, Ronnie, swept her off her feet and brought her over to the UK. She left her home and family as a 22 year old, couldn't speak a word of English and was referred to by many nasty people as "that bloody foreigner"! Her Ronnie has since died and she is left with her memories. I think I'll pop around now and have a chat with her.
All the best

I have watched 4 episodes of Broken Brain. There is a lot of redundancy, with the main message to eat healthy fats & adequate protein, limit carbohydrates especially sugar & fructose, get enough sleep, and exercise daily including HIIT. Stay off the couch and on your feet. Stuff we know. It is reinforcing to hear it again, and although I am not learning anything new, I have renewed determination.

Katla - glad you are enjoying the broken brain information. For me, it's a good way to start the new year. I also put CoQ10 on my shopping list. I watched the one on ADHD and am finishing the one on Depression right now. Seems there's a common thread to nearly all brain problems - sugar, stress, lack of sleep, poor nutrition, lack of exercise. So this has been a kick in the pants to get back on the program. Dr. Hyman has replaced Pip!
This episode on Depression has a lot about how bad constant internet time is and social media. I am just about weaned off Facebook, thank goodness. I pop in a couple times a day to see if new recipes have been posted on the sites I like and to check messenger. Then it goes off.
Margaret, they are emphasizing everything you said about preparing for sleep - discontinuing electronics an hour or two before because of the "blue light". They mentioned our phones and tablets often have settings to turn off the blue and to do that several hours prior to bed if we are still on our electronics. I just discovered my little Fire tablet has a "blue shade" setting - I didn't know what that was for. I'll put it to use.
Lisa - so glad you don't have to hit the road for the warehouse closing. It's good you are had the "coast" experience and it's solidifying your original plan to move to Arkansas. Dana - come back!
Heather - glad Burns night is on - sounds like it's coming together perfectly.
Karen UK - enjoy your visit with your war bride neighbor! What an interesting story! Glad your new job is working out OK. Like you said, you get some extra $$ and get to do what you are good at. It does sound like fun.
Rye - hope you are feeling better. I too like potatoes and stuffed baked potatoes is a favorite. And I like the fact they don't have to be stuffed with bacon, sour cream, and cheese tho I like them that way, lol.

Las Tres Hermanas at sunset. “ The Three Sisters” we are at the southern base of these.
No gain and no loss this week. I’ll take that.
Called and talked to everyone I had planned on this weekend. Even an unexpected call from my Uncle.
Thinking about all the sad losses recently here.

Thanks again for Broken Brain, Lanette! It is full of good information.
Yoga today and working toward getting ready for our trip east.

Becca - So sorry to hear about your stepdad. I too had a wonderful step-father that I got in 9th grade. When I lost him it was hard. He told me when we got him that he didn't want to be my Dad, I had one of those already (who was still very much in my life), he just wanted to be my friend. And he was, he was one of my very best friends. He always considered me his daughter and my hubs his son. I was never a step to him. Hugs my friend!

Lanette regarding Intermittent Fasting. I don’t know if I mentioned this.
Many people only find it hard the first couple of days. And they seem to find it hard because they keep thinking about food during the fasting time. Like any habit, it gets so much easier as you go along and you will quickly get to the point when you can do it without any thought - certainly without any hunger.
I have been doing the 16: 8 (or 15:9 with my schedule now) for months. The only times I get tempted in the “off“ hours are when I see or read something about a specific food that makes me think about it. Right now the abundance of Valentine’s Day commercials are making me think about chocolates at night. I try to keep a cup of coffee or herbal tea with me at night and the temptations generally only last a brief moment.

Still sick. The instant strep throat test was negative but nurse sent it in regular to be certain.

Rye - thank you for that info! I made it 14 hours which I think was good. I am using to eating dinner real early and being finished up by 4 pm -- but my body was used to my "2nd dinner" which started back in the snack cupboard at around 6 pm and lasting until I went to bed. So I need to plan my one and only dinner better and get enough protein and good fat.
Glad you don't have strep throat (maybe). Do you think you caught it from the sick folks at your workplace?

Today is Answer Your Cat's Questions Day!
"If you’re a cat person, you’ll no doubt wonder what your cat is thinking from time to time. What unsolved mysteries does your tabby ponder, hmm? Answers Your Cat’s Questions Day is a chance to find out, and to answer some of the big questions. Take some time and attempt to work out what questions your cat is asking, and make a concerted effort to fill in the blanks." Riiiight. I think the only question my cats ponder is when I'm going to feed them again.
I've been gone so long I guess I need to reintroduce myself to any new arrivals. I'd planned to be home for the holidays, but my dad walked into the emergency room on December 9 because he felt puny and his ankles were swollen. A week later he was diagnosed with stage 4 renal cell carcinoma and transferred to hospice, and he died on the 27th. I ended up spending three weeks in Houston helping care for Dad, making hospice and funeral arrangements, and working with my siblings to get his independent living apartment emptied out because we had to have him out of there by the 5th.
Now I finally feel ready to be back, and as a requirement of my new health-share plan I've got a health coach and an official weight goal (which is actually 10 pounds higher than my personal weight goal). Hopefully I'll be able to stay on track, because I think I lost all my progress while I was away.
It sounds like many of us have had trials and tribulations in December and January. My warmest wishes go out to those of you who are hurting, grieving, and/or struggling.
Becca - I think I could manage your 30-day challenge except for the chocolate!
Joyce - I love the image of Ellie in her frills doing archery. Sounds like she's a natural.
Lisa - Congratulations on getting the warehouse sale finalized. That must be a weight off your shoulders.
Heather - I want to be at your house for Burns Night!
Been thinking of you all and missing you while I was out doing other stuff. We made the decision to pay a mover to pack up everything in the apartment and move it to storage for us, so we could spend our time with Dad in hospice. Now I'm Dad's executor so I'll still have some travel back and forth to get things settled, but hopefully I'll do a better job of keeping up here. If my motivation gets weak, there's still that monthly meeting with my health coach to hold my feet to the fire...
Blessings and a happy new year to you all!

Ach! I am sick. I forgot the whole reason I posted this!
TIP: get busy! Starting to intermittently fast is so much easier if you have made sure that you are busy during the fasting time. I planned a whole bunch of cleaned out the cupboard type of tasks for the first mornings when I started this process. As soon as I would think maybe I want to eat earlier than I planned, I would start cleaning a new cabinet. That made me forget all about food. Pretty soon the eating window time had rolled around and all was good.
I think my co-workers are likely but not certainly the vector for my illness.4 -

Oh you had an awesome stepfather! I remember the moment I heard his fancy business shoes clipping on our floors in the kitchen. A man sound, and quite a comfort! My father was a strange guy. My Mom said he turned 50 and funny, so hence the divorce. He told me once when I had my visitation with him that Barry Manilow sounds so amazing after you smoke pot!!! Geez, Dad way to act like a grown up... I also would call my father, dialing over and over until I was a puddle of tears. This was when I was a freshman in high school. My poor Mom had to clean up those drama filled moments. At one time I decided to call my birth father not my father but a friend. Because my definition of a father is someone that is there for me, and he was off finding himself. I have a particular memory of him and I playing a nice friendly game of tennis one visit. I hit the ball so hard, and he did too! Like two angry adult/children!

Rye, Hope your throat feels better! When I was stationed in Japan, I was so sick. My girlfriend was dealing with a bladder infection, so we both limped to the ER on base. After both being seen, she asked what I had, and I garbled "strep throat". I asked what she had and she exclaimed Pregnant! So we joke that her son started out as a bladder infection!
Get better soon!

Heather, you should be an Events Planner. You have such clever ideas and attention to those little details that turn something ordinary into something fantastic. You put your imagination to good use and create wonderful memories for those you love.
Lanette, thanks so much for that link. For those of you who haven't checked it out, the link details a scientific study done on 10 people with Alzheimers. They were able to reverse it in 9 cases. The 10th case was too far gone. In the 9 successful cases, this is what they did on the whole, each person doing things slightly differently: They changed to a low grain/low glycemic diet, ate blueberries, curcurmin (turmeric), coconut oil, fish oil, reduced stress through yoga, meditation or music, increased exercise, enhanced sleep with melatonin, fasted for 12 hour stretches from dinner through to a late breakfast, and added supplements including: CoQ10, Resvertrol, Progesterone, Ashwaghanda and Bacopa Monniera. They all increased their veggies and fruits and quit eating processed foods and ate wild fish or took fish oil or DHA/EPA or DHEA. Sounds healthy to me!
I did go on the garden ramble with my bestie yesterday. We carried umbrellas and waited for the heavier showers to pass. We had morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea together and talked talked talked. Did our own personal garden judging competition, LOL and had a whale of a time! Took away some good ideas.
Today I am heading into the office to do accounts, then I am driving two and half hours to stay with my daughter for her birthday and see her new home (her MIL) house. Will stay the night and attend a birthday dinner at a local restaurant. Have just enough money for gas and dinner, if I am careful!
My card declined at the supermarket yesterday and I had to pay my cash and put half the groceries back. SOOOOO embarrassing! The insurance company had direct debited $250 out of our account that I had planned to spend on groceries. I LOVE insurance companies-NOT! But this is life insurance if my hubby dies, so I won't cancel it. He's not the healthiest man! I do try and encourage him to make better choices but he is an Irish man and loves his beers and fatty roast meats. His dad was an alcoholic and died of complications after a stroke at 63. But of course, men never see the writing on the wall until it's too late.
I am SOOOO looking forward to today. I love travelling, seeing new places and doing something out of routine! I will put my walking shoes in and find new places to walk on the way, and tomorrow as well. I am an explorer at heart. A wanderer. Wendy7 -

lorig_2000 - you've joined just by posting. Not a group, but a thread, which will start clean once more at the beginning of February. They're a great group. Just tell us what name you'd like to be called by, and a general or specific location.
Vic in Missouri - welcome, as well!
I'm taking a brain-break from all the grants, and because my 3 p.m. meeting got postponed to 5 p.m., I've got time to breathe for a minute. The days do just fly by when I'm so busy, which makes me happy. Not so happy about a 5 p.m. meeting, but it could be worse.

Hi ladies. Well 60+ pages ago everyone was wishing me success with starting over, and here I go again. Last week I was just overwhelmed and ate way too much,, but as they say each day is another chance to start over, so that's what I'm doing today. I don't know why but I almost get paralyzed I guess with anxiety or maybe depression, I have no idea, but just can't accomplish anything when I feel that way.
Today is a snow day. The immediate area is getting all kinds of different amounts of snow, from almost nothing to I just heard 9". Depends on what side of a line you are on. DD#2 is in Sioux City and they are having a blizzard there. Everything here is shut down. The snow is beautiful, but wet and heavy, so I will be wrestling with the snow blower later on.
DH is doing well. He started violin lessons (I think I may have told you that). He used to play with the Phoenix symphonette (youth symphony), but hasn't played in about 20 years. He's been wanting to pick it back up and there is a guy there who owns music studios and teaches, so they got together. He also found a trainer, so he is getting some help with physical fitness. We are both glad the shut down appears to be over; when the corrections officers get furloughed, the inmates are locked down, so no mail, no phone, no email. He does have email now and that's really nice. He's going to a 12 step group now too. He's also in toastmasters and is taking a math class (not sure why he picked that one...it's called Joy of Math...bleh).
Well I best get up and accomplish something with my free day. I took a long nap this morning after reading the paper, so now it's time to be productive! Always lots to do, so there is no shortage of things to occupy me.
Take care and stay warm if you are in the snow's path! Meg from snowy Omaha5 -
I'm in.
January/February resolutions--
No refined sugar (and as few as possible refined carbs) on weekdays. Maybe a glass of wine, but mostly save alcohol for weekend.
And no going crazy on weekend, just allowing small treats.
The last 6 years of my weight management have been brutal. I've got to turn things around! But my body doesnt respond like it did at age 40!3 -
This is the first three verses of The Address to a Haggis. It is an eight verse poem. We usually read these, in a Scottish accent, and then the last verse. At the appropriate moment in the third verse you plunge your large carving knife (dagger) into the haggis.
The translation is there.
Wendy - That is something I have considered from time to time, when my writing wasn't going so well. I am able to easily envisage sequences and detail. And pitfalls. However, I have a tendency towards perfectionism and can easily drive myself nuts. I also have a reputation for long, excellent meals etc and I am shying away from the expectation as it is too much of a burden, now my writing is serious again. The last twice we had guests we went to the local pub! I still provided cocktails and nibbles before and homemade truffles when we got back.
My motto for years has been DON'T LET THE PERFECT BE THE ENEMY OF THE GOOD. I have to stick to that to avoid it driving me mad.
Yvonne - so sorry to hear about your dad. I suppose the only blessing was that it was quick. But such a shock! (((HUGS)))
Much love, Heather UK xxxxxxx3 -
Hi ladies,
Lisa, that’s wonderful news about the warehouse paperwork. Good start to the week.
Heather, good news about the potential building. Congrats on the c25K!
Karen, glad to hear the new job went well.
Penny, cute pic!
Allie, I’m not surprised that you didn’t sleep. I’m sure your dad dying was quite a shock. Hope your brother behaves himself. If not, just walk away.
Tere, sorry to hear your college classmate passed on Saturday. So sad that she lost hope. Yeah on the 10 lbs! That’s wonderful. Enjoy your company.
Rye, sorry you still aren’t feeling wall. This has been a bad year for colds and flu.
Yvonne, I’m sorry to hear about your dad. I’m sure you took good care of him at the end and make his transition peaceful. (((Hugs)))
Vic, welcome!
Lorig_2000, you joined the group when you posted. Just tell us a little about yourself and what name you would like to use.
Got up this morning and did my 1- min kettlebell exercises. But found out doing it isn’t he a.m. isn’t going to work as I got so sweaty that I didn’t have time to cool down before I had to shower and get ready for work. Looks like I’ll have to do it after work instead.
Eating going well so far today which feels good. I do feel like I want to eat, like I did when I first started with MFP but I know that will be away over time. Going to have to just push through. I’d like to get below 200 again before my birthday in February. I only must lose 3 lbs so I should be able to do that.
?Well, got to get back to work.
