Becca , When my life was in shambles a few years ago, a friend told me to "stay in the moment " If necessary, talk to yourself about what you are doing in the moment to distract your mind and keep it from running amok with fear. Since then I started meditation. Meditation is a way to train your mind. It helped me keep my mind from wandering into dangerous places.

Hey sisters, enjoyed a long walk/jog on the beach this morning with Jock and Lace. Thinking about getting a Toy Boy- Not! Lol. Had a younger man ring me on the phone I borrowed from middle daughter. He was trying to get ahold of her. I told him it was her mother and then he asked me if I was "hot" like my daughter. I said YES. ( After all, this is over the phone and he can't see me, lol.) Then he asked me "Do you want to root me?" Now, there must be some debil-part of me because I said, "Maybe, how good looking are you?" Well, then, he said "I'm good looking." So I led him on (can't help myself Lanette) and said, "Is that your own opinion or other people's?" "Other people have told me so," he replied. HMMMM...then I said, "Sorry, you are out of luck because I am taken but I'll add you to the list after my husband karks it." "Is he quite old?" this young hopeful asks me.

Wendy ... you are bad ... ... LOL!
Allie ... hugs ...
Becca ... Barbie's advice is good ... stay in the moment. Just one day at a time, because, really, who knows what tomorrow holds. And a good cry is never a bad thing. Sometimes just what we need to wash out the junk collecting inside of us ... hugs ...
My need to do new flooring in one of the bedrooms stems from the fact that I tried to manipulate my son's lift equipment when he was home recuperating from surgery on carpet. I've done serious damage to a ligament in my shoulder and am hoping that it will heal without intervention. But I am certain that I cannot have my son stay overnight again with the carpet in place ... a smooth floor is what's needed and since the room is adjacent to my kitchen I would like the floor to look like it was planned and not an after-thought. There's talk that the home he is currently renting might not be available to him in the near future, so this project has jumped ahead in our list of things to do.
Finally, husband and I have decided to do the healthy eating and exercising together ... neither one of us has been doing too well going on our own. We're pretty much sticking to proteins and fruits and vegetables ... not much in the way of gluten based carbs but not eliminating them either. We are doing a major clean of the basement area and updating the exercise equipment. You all might remember that making that area appealing was one of my goals a while back. Well, it's looking better, but still not what I'd call appealing ... hubby has promised to help me paint and update lighting as well. That will go a long way to making it look better. Because right now it looks a lot like Rye's time out room ... I mean cold room!

Barbie, yes, staying in my moment, is really my own saving grace. My dear husband saw my ugly crying face and I cried, and laughed hysterically into his chest! I am such an emotional person, and maybe I needed a release! I'm such a silly loon, haha!
So my husband talked me down, giving me reasons why I shouldn't worry so much.
He offered to figure out my eldest sons address and I could write him.
He stated that we get along well, and we will weather anything that comes along.
I confessed it felt like I was in limbo, waiting. He said, we are always waiting, but that's called living. True. He confessed, we might not move, but hey, we have a great place, paying bills OK, have healthcare etc....in other words we are blessed. True.
My pity party came and went!
I will discuss with doctor about my quality of sleep though. Again, ladies, appreciate letting me put down my thoughts. Live in the moment, appreciate the now!

Hugs for Allie... all I've got.
But then more hugs for Becca, because it's an inexhaustible supply... and the answer is, crying does wash it clean. And wholly agree with staying in the moment, while being utterly incapable of it myself.
Love y'all,

Becca, I have to agree with Barbie. I'm sure it's quite overwhelming having so many things up in the air at this point, you have to try to let the ones that you have no control over work themselves out. Meditation sounds good or anything else that will help you forget, even if it's just temporarily. I would love to be able to tell you how to get a good nights sleep, because that would mean that I could get one too. {{HUGS}}
Wendy, LOVE it!! Gotta keep those young guys on their toes!
Allie, glad that the service went well and that Tom was a help. Must be a bit of a relief to have it done with. I love the baseball idea. A very neat memory either for you or to be placed with your dad eventually.
Beth, good luck with the exercise room! I agree ambience is important! I also think it can't have too many distractions in it. I do some exercise in the room that holds my computer and craft stuff. Sometimes, the pull of the computer is strong..... lol and it takes all I have to say NO to it! I'm getting better tho. lol

Wendy - you are to be commended on your motherly instincts! Smart thinkin' making a list!
Allie - (((HUGS))))
Becca - (((HUGS)))) as well. I've been my DH's reluctant caregiver a couple times and don't look forward to being it again, tho it may come to that. I don't want to be the "strong one", darn it. I am weaker than I let on!
I ran across an article recently in WebMD about how to curb anxiety: https://www.webmd.com/mental-health/features/ways-to-reduce-anxiety. A lot of it is run of the mill advice, but I really liked #5 and it follows Barbie's advice about staying in the moment. I've been using it when my brain gets caught up in everything that could go wrong when/if my DH has vascular surgery in the near future:
5. Follow the 3-3-3 rule.
Look around you and name three things you see. Then, name three sounds you hear. Finally, move three parts of your body -- your ankle, fingers, or arm. Whenever you feel your brain going 100 miles per hour, this mental trick can help center your mind, bringing you back to the present moment, Chansky says. (Repeat, repeat, repeat if you need to!)
Hope this helps!

Suki the cat is beautiful! Those eyes are such a pretty color. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a cat with that color eyes. ❤️❤️❤️ @costalgosgal

(((((((Becca))))))) stay in the moment is better than any advice I can think of. There is no use fretting over things out of your control, but I know that is way easier said than done. You are a strong woman, and you will survive.
Warm/cool/warm/cool. Y’all know I’m not artistic, don’t you? I think my house may be a conglomeration of both. It is as confused as I am! My kitchen is black, white, and gray with a little red thrown in. The living room is yellow, but that will change sooner rather than later. The carpets are a sage green, but they will eventually be changed to hardwood in antique gunstock. The countertop in the bathroom is what it is. It will not be changed. The cabinets are white. Towels and rugs will be changed, for sure. Ours have had it! I’d kind of like to keep wall color and shower curtain, because I bought three of them, and Mama cut two of them into custom window toppers, but it’s not a deal breaker if I have to change them. I’m not really leaning toward the taupe. It is just the one I picked out yesterday. The gray I’ve had since October. I know I’m really clueless when it comes to decorating, but I see cool in the taupe and the kind icy blue of the accent. Both do match the countertop, they just bring out different aspects of it.
I’m going to post a couple of pics of the current bathroom. Please don’t judge. It looks pretty grungy.

@wildhorsewendy That’s funny! I’m still wondering what “to root” is.3

@costalgosgal Things will get better and there is always something to be thankful for. A favorite aunt use to say: this too shall pass. It’s the truth too. Hugs and have a blessed weekend. ❤️❤️❤️2

I’m afraid it means what I think it means. Oh, my!

Jayne, I live in New Zealand and they use their own vocab here. Root = F**k. It's the polite word for fornication. Wendy5

I was so good with my consumption yesterday and today I haven't been. I think it was NYKAREN who takes about that phenomenom. Oh well, one day's slip. Many more good days to come.
Hope I sleep tonight. Back to my normal routine tomorrow. I have grown to love my ordinary, everyday life.

Well, y'all are still here. No matter how often I leave and come back, this message board is still going. Well, I am back again. Fatter than ever. But this time eating right has nothing to do with losing weight. I discovered that my brain is way older than I am. If I want to prevent or slow down dementia I need to get into perfect shape. Of course they suggested the Mediterranean diet - which is nothing more than eating lots of fruits and vegetables and little or no red meat. I have no doubt that I'll stick with it now. The thought of losing your mind is a huge motivator. Especially since I've seen what Alzheimer's does to people.
For those that remember me, some updates. My oldest daughter graduated from Vanderbilt, my younger daughter turned 18 and my 16 year old son has had the same adorable girlfriend for a year and a half. 4 years ago you might remember a fall from a horse broke 8 of my ribs. Well in August I broke 6 of my ribs on the opposite side. My horse in my picture was accidentally killed by an ex-friend of mine on mothers day. The horse I replaced her with spooked and unseated me.
Hopefully I can go read and catch up with the names I remember.9 -
Regarding bone health and exercise ...
This is the Osteoporosis Australia website:
https://www.osteoporosis.org.au/exercise
It has many things to say about exercise, calcium and vit D.
They also provide this pdf of recommended exercises at different stages of life.
https://www.osteoporosis.org.au/sites/default/files/files/recommendedexercisesLS.pdf
I tend to do the moderate range.
I've added some jogging into my exercise plan, although I haven't done that in the last couple weeks because I am focusing more on training for cycling events just now.
I walk lots of hills because that's what we've got here ... it's mostly up or down. Some are steep. Some are gradual. But there are only small patches of truly flat ground here.
I climb real stairs ... I work in a 10-storey building and hike up and down those stairs throughout the day. At one point I was up to 40 flights a day, but found that to be a bit much when I'm also training for long distance cycling events.
And I do some weight lifting, but probably should do more.
When I walk as part of my commute to work or university, I'm usually carrying a moderately heavy backpack as well. My commutes are generally relatively gentle hills so I figure the extra weight of the backpack adds to the difficulty level.
And part of the reason I do all that is because I know that cycling does nothing for my bones. It's great for a lot of other things, but cyclists tend to have poor bone health.

Katiebug - your bathrooms look great! Seriously!!! Wish mine looked that good. We desperately need a new shower stall - the seat cracked several years ago and it's now decorated with Tyvek tape.
That has happened to showers in several homes in our little subdivision - the developer must have gotten a good deal on cut-rate shower stalls. So that's on the replacement list one of these days.
Beth - totally understandable about wheelchair-friendly floor coverings. We are kind of stalling with replacement, seeing how my DH fares with his health problems.
Becca - did you stay at the hospital the when your DH had his liver transplant? I think you told us but I cannot recall. Would be nice if they had a Ronald McDonald house or similar. Understandable that staying with middle son won't work out - I know you want to remain close by. I'm thinking of you being able to get some decent sleep and getting your batteries recharged in a quiet place. Sounds like your DH has a good attitude about it all. Hugs to both of you!!!
Heather - glad your events are over for a while. Those photos of the Sound of Music were so cute - great smiles! It doesn't take much to throw me off-kilter either when my normal schedule is messed up, even if it's a wonderful fun reason!
Wessecg - have you been able to watch the "Broken Brain" series? Sounds like you've been diagnosed as having a problem? Lately, we've been talking in this group about some research done regarding some programs which help reverse cognitive decline. Here's an article:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4221920/ I too am trying to preserve and improve my brain as my mom died with dementia and I find myself getting "brain fog" more often than I care to admit.
Have a good evening everyone!

Thank you. I will check it out. Yes, my brain is older than it should be due to the amount of trauma it has suffered. Also, I will be going to a Brain Health center that is supposed to give me a list of preventative measures.5

Been reading and trying to catch up . I have made it to pg 105. I had both the warrior princesses over night so was kept quite busy. Just popping off to ready myself for our Christmas party. It snowed here so it does look like Christmas. I will try to come on later.

Welcome back, wessecg. I remember you. I saw your name and thought, she’s the one with horses. When Wendy first started posting, I thought it was you. It took me a little while to figure out I was wrong. Will be interested to hear what you learn at the brain center.1

If you're the type who likes to follow a plan, you might like the weekly meal plans that SkinnyTaste posts. I get them in my Facebook feed.
https://www.skinnytaste.com/skinnytaste-meal-plan-january-29-february-4/
She posts a meal plan each week, and you can look back at other weeks as well by clicking the Meal Plan link at the top.
https://www.skinnytaste.com/meal-plans/
Personally, I'm not that much of a meal planner, but I have tried a few of the recipes now and then and have liked them. And I know it can be helpful to follow plans, even for just a little while, to get on track and develop habits.

Hidee ho,
Took a nap and then got up ,put my jammies back on and I'm back in bed..
Becca- sweet friend ,the serenity prayer works for me...the future is not promised ,a day at a time dear friend.
That is how I am taking my life right now a day at a time.9 -
I did not know skinny taste did that, Machka. Thanks for the link. I’m going to give it a try.1

Machka - thank you for that list of exercises. I downloaded a document from that same organization a few months ago which actually gave the following exercise recommendations:
Post menopausal women and middle aged men-
[/b] Encourage participation in a multi-modal exercise regimen inclusive of moderate-high impact weight-bearing exercise (eg: 50-100 jumps) and high intensity progressive resistance training at least 3 times per week.
Specific spinal extension resistance training during middle-age has been shown to reduce vertebral fracture rates over 10 years. Note: leisure walking on its own is not recommended as an adequate strategy for bone health although it has benefit for general health and fitness.
I think that website you mentioned above is really great, lots of good ideas. And YOU gave me an idea. The tallest public building in our county is the courthouse - 4 stories. I need to remember when I'm in town to walk UP the stairs and back down again. Some of my co-workers used to do that on their breaks. In retrospect, I wish I had joined them.
I plan to make a chicken vegetable curry soup tomorrow. Don't have any cauliflower but I do have a nice fat sweet potato!
