Kris from CA here. I'm 51...for about a week more. I've always been on the heavier side, but also have always been somewhat active if not as athletically talented as I'd like. For about the past 2-4 years, increasing weight and age have creeped in and taken over to the point that I just don't feel good most of the time. I've got mild sleep apnea, intermittent plantar fasciitis, and more aches and pains than I like. Oh...and perimenopause is here and likely shifting to full menopause. I'm totally okay with that, but the accompanying weight gain and lower metabolism is an issue.
So about 4 weeks ago I decided that enough was enough and I started tracking my food and actively cutting back. I'm also going to the gym 2-4 times a week and increasing the number of minutes I'm on the field in my weekly soccer game. Already I feel better! Not great, but better. As I become increasingly aware of my own mortality, I want to maximize the amount of time I have left on this planet where I feel good. Specific numbers on the scale and how I look in a swimsuit are not important. What matters is how I feel and how much time and energy I have for my family.

One woke up blind like you did, had his wife take him immediately to the ER and it turned out to be the first manifestation of severe diabetes. The other had an episode mid-day, went to ophthalmologist, who found nothing. Her vision returned and she went on with her life. Two days later she had a massive stroke. Turns out her episode of blindness was a TIA. So not to alarm, but please get thoroughly checked out.

Thanks Pat. I did go in. The doc took pictures of my retina and everything looks fine. She diagnosed the episode as migraine with aura. If it starts happening more frequently, or if my vision doesn't resolve, she wants to see me again.

My husband is actually progressing a bit slower than they had hoped. Some of that likely has to do with his ongoing chest infections and the fact that they can't take his trach out until the infection clears. They wanted to take his trach out last week, they wanted to take his trach out this week ... but he's not ready.
They tell me that when he has the trach removed, he might talk more consistently ... at least that's what they are hoping.
Meanwhile, he is talking a little bit: words & short phrases. But he's 'in the moment'. It is unclear whether he remembers or what he remembers. He doesn't know names, places, dates or any of the testing stuff.
And his talking isn't consistent ... he won't talk for a while, then he might come out with a few things, and then it's silence again. When he's angry, he says a bit more than when he's happy.
If you've ever been with/worked with someone with dementia ... it's kind of like he's got reverse dementia ... like he's in the severe dementia stage now, but instead of getting progressively worse, he's got a chance of getting progressively better. But it is a very slow process.

Welcome! I love yoga. I practice at home on my own during the week and then attend a class on Sunday afternoons. It has made a big difference in my flexibility and outlook.

Good morning! Happy Thursday! Interesting couple of interviews so far this week. Two little boys- two different families. Both very active. Both have never been to daycare. Both with learning/speech delays. The first little guy kind of "bubbled" through the interview, happily moving from room to room; playing, looking around, asking one/two word questions. He didn't want to go home. Finally let me get him ready (shoes and coat on) and agreed to leave if I held his hand and walked him out. Second little guy was a whirlwind of naughty (he is a year younger than the other). Trying to marker on my walls, trying to get through the gates into the other areas of the house, playing with the knobs on the stove; tantrum with each time he heard "no" or I tried to redirect him. Mama says' " We don't tell him no. It's not good for him, emotionally." I let her know that the word "no" is a good word to learn boundaries. Kids need them. Needless to say, pretty sure I won't be seeing him again. Interviews are so trying; but necessary. Plus, it makes me feel very grateful for the little ones that I already have in my care. OH! Good news on that note: I have two girls who will be three years old in the fall and both of the families were planning to send them to preschool next year. Well, one of the families has decided to keep her daughter with me for another year! So that leaves me with one opening in the fall; but I just heard back from family number one (above) and they want their little guy to join my care this summer! Yea! So...I only have one summer opening left, plus openings on weekend and evenings.
Rori- I have never been to Royal Gorge, but it looks extraordinary! Have a great time!
Machka- I am positive the docs are correct that the infection/chest tube is slowing his progress. My heart is with you. He IS making progress! That is so great! It will come. It will happen. We will WILL it into being. Glad to see you are taking care of yourself
Terri- Add my list to the admirers of the Hardwareables! My ears are no longer pierced; but those are definitely the style I like!
Janet-Another great grand baby! You are a lucky woman! Your family is growing faster than Marcelyn's!
Welcome newbies!
Did I mention that this is my last day of work this week? I will be in South Bend, Indiana, tomorrow! My DD is speaking at a conference at Notre Dame this weekend AND she is bringing Joaquin and her DH with her! My DH, DYS, and I are driving down (100 miles) tomorrow morning and spending the weekend with them! So excited to see my baby!

Good Morning from Ohio!
So I have actually cooked dinner the last three nights! Grilled chicken, roasted potatoes and green beans, then Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes, gravy and broccoli. Last night I air fried pork chops my dear SIL gave us. My husband doesn't do bones or fat since he can't see them. I trimmed up the chops and was going to throw away what I wasn't cooking, then had a light bulb moment. I took the bones and scraps, boiled then deboned the meat. It is ready for bean soup! We had mac and cheese and peas with them. They turned out well. This was a satisfying moment as I probably have averaged one meal cooked a week at home due to schedules for the past month! Tonight we are going after work to watch our grand daughter's last track meet (or part of it). Dinner tonight will be breakfast. Fast and easy! I am excited for my food this week.I know seems strange to all that cook, but this is not the norm for us.
Migraine still hanging on. Today just seems to be the residual from 2 days hurting. The weather fronts seem to be the culprits. Something about certain high lows colliding. I just wish they would stop. They were worse when I wasn't on hormones. And the doctor and I finally found a medicine that helps. Something about my blood vessels already being too open, then opening more for fronts, so am on a constrictor. The normal meds made them really bad as they are mainly dilate.
Felicia- Glad you got yours checked out. Always better to be safe!
Machka- It seems you have a better grasp on the entire situation. The explanation you gave gives a good picture of what is happening. The brain is an amazing thing! I am glad you are finding a new if temporary normal. Please know you are thought of often with warm thoughts and lots of prayers.
Janetr- Congrats on the new addition! I know you are excited.
Rori- Enjoy your impromptu trip. Sounds like fun!
Gotta get ready for work! (((Hugs)))! High fives! and Love to all,

Hi all, just waiting for DH and Edie to come back from nursery and then I will take myself off for a nap. Hardly slept last night.
Haven't heard any more from the estate agents.
We are leaving after tea with the kids. So around 6pm.
My son is looking better. He went to AA this morning at 7.30 because he is in charge of a big food and drink festival this weekend. Hard. He has lost weight and has registered for the Brighton marathon next year.
I am knackered.
Much love, Heather UK XXXXXX7 -
I am up early this morning. My friend and I agreed to meet 30 minutes earlier than usual to walk with the dogs so I can be home earlier to get ready to teach the intermediate line dance class. The teacher has the flu and asked me to fill in for her. I am prepared for the class but have to get there much earlier as the teacher than I would as a student.

(((Machka))) I'm keeping both you and your husband in my prayers. I am glad to know you are riding your bike. It is an important part of your health and happiness.
Heather: It sounds as though your son in making progress. Yay! AA is such a wonderful organization. Getting the support they offer is a blessing. He is smart to get help there.
Barbie: Your neighbor is a good friend to adjust walking times so that you can fill in for another dance class.
Terry in VT: FODMAP is new to us so I'm not sure I can explain well enough, but I'll try. We still have a lot to learn. This is what I know so far: FODMAP is a restricted eating system for people who can't digest gluten. This means eating nothing with a wheat ingredient. I still eat regular bread, but he eats wheat free bread. Foods with no gluten are "low" and he can have them. Foods with gluten are "high" & make him sick. We have apps on our phones to look things up. The Chinese restaurant where we had lunch uses nothing with gluten in their meals. We can use rice flour and corn flour without any worries, but oats have a load of situations. Oats themselves are low, oat bread is medium and oat milk is high. Corn meal is low, but corn bread contains wheat flour and he can't eat it. Oat and honey granola bars are also high. If we blow it, he will likely suffer through a bout of diarrhea. We've only known about his gluten intolerance diagnosis for a couple of weeks, and he is making amazing progress. For the previous several months he was miserable & occasionally incontinent. It was not a good way to live. :noway: Now that we know what is going on, life is getting better.
The weather outside is gorgeous this morning. I plan to spend some time out there. We're still in the process of putting our drip irrigation system together. We use it to water fuchsias and other plants in pots. I also plan to go to yoga this morning.
