I got certified for diving about 6 yrs ago. I’ve got over 200 dives now. We go on several trips a year. Now if you want to see sharks go to Turks and Caicos. We saw bunches of sharks on every dive there. Only saw about six in Belize. The whale sharks are in Belize in June so we were too early for them.

Rori, walking with poodles is not only good exercise, but it is great fun.
I did another 90 minutes of spreading bark in my yard this morning. I have limited my time so I don't hurt myself. Finding moderation is often difficult for me. I was putting bark around the lavender plants. Even though they aren't blooming yet, they smell great.
We took another ride up into the Olympic forest today. The scenery is beautiful but I kept wanting to get out and walk instead of just riding.

Terry, this is for you. Know that we all go through tough times, and it makes us so much stronger. You are a clever and creative lady, going through a difficult time. This too shall pass.

Cheri – I love the poem with the blankets.
Rori – have fun in the Poconos. We used to live there. This is a real nice time of the year. How long will you be gone for?

I am soooo glad to be home from work! I am off tomorrow & will be meeting my granddaughter at her bus after school. I am really looking forward to the day off & seeing my grandchildren.
I know some of you work from home or have worked from home. One of my coworkers is thinking about working from home. My employer doesn't offer that option; my coworker would actually be putting in her notice & going to work for someone else.
Some of you may remember how desperately I have wanted my grandson to be home-schooled, but could never convince my son and daughter-in-law to do it. Well, they are convinced now, after 2 more years of sheer misery for my amazing, brilliant, 11 year old grandboy. My daughter-in-law's goal is to get a job with the same online school my grandson will be enrolled in, so she can work from home and oversee his education. I am beyond relieved. I would like to be more available to enable them. I also would like for her to have more time to herself & time to visit her aging/ailing parents more often.
I was thinking that if I worked from home I might have more control over my schedule and be of some use to my kids and grandkids.
Please share opinions/experiences with working from home. The only time I have worked from home was when I was an at-home mom. This would be very different.

Karen: Thanks for the biscuit tip. Your advice must have wafted through the ether, because that is just what we did. :flowerforyou:
Rori: Enjoy the Poconos.
Today was DH's birthday. We went out for lunch, a friend came by to chat and DH got to talk to both of our kids. We grilled a chicken that was just plain awful. We're not planning to buy chicken from that store again. After grilling for hours it was still tough as an old boot. :grumble:

morning ladies, our power went back on around 10 last night i was sleeping but had left a few lights on so got up and turned them off and went back to bed...
have to get Tal on the bus today, then come home and get this place picked up because they are coming for the appraisal today,
ughh, lots of stuff to do for a mortgage.. but in the end I will have my own little place...2 -
Rori - enjoy the Poconos! It's lovely to see you taking advantage of your retirement to pack your days with joy and experiences that feed the heart.
Katla - we had just that experience the other night with a whole chicken. We seldom buy them, because there's just the two of us. It was literally inedible. So, the next morning, I pitched the whole blinking thing in the big pot with lots of water and spices, simmered it all day and turned it into five quart jars of chicken stock. More than made up for the price we paid, as chicken stock is getting expensive, and should be terrific in soups, stews, sauces, using it to cook rice, etc. If I had dogs, I would have cut up the shredded chicken meat and fed it to them, but we just chucked it--all the flavor is now in that stock.
Karen in VA - I've worked from my home for quite a bit of my professional life, and I love it. At some point, I always have to visit the office of whatever firm I'm working for, and find myself frustrated by the chaos and distractions that always seem to arise in offices--and also find myself completely unproductive, I might add. I have a hard time working in office situations, and when I've absolutely had to, end up shutting my door a lot. Things I've had to do in order to be successful at home:- Got a headset for my phone. Over the years, it's morphed from a wired one to a bluetooth, but I have to be able to write notes, usually on the keyboard, and need both hands. Crooking your neck to keep a phone at your ear will do really bad things to your neck very quickly. You're also on the phone much more than in a traditional office to get things done. Headsets make it so much easier.
- Spent the money on a good office chair. I'm in it at least nine hours a day, sometimes 12. All kitchen chairs are tall enough that my feet dangle. Not an option for long with my knees.
- Had a separate space where, when I'm done, I can shut a door, or go on the other side of a room screen, or whatever it takes, and be done with work. If you don't provide some separation, you're always at work, and risk burning out quickly.
- Declined to work at the kitchen table, not because of physical comfort, but because the kitchen and the food are right there, and I was constantly in the refrigerator.
- Set the expectation with my co-workers that, at a specific time at least somewhat matching their quitting time, I'm done for the day. I don't answer the phone or answer e-mails after that point.
The benefits of working at home far outweigh the inconveniences. I'm often three or four times as productive as my coworkers. My commute is 30 seconds, from the coffee machine to my office. The only traffic is possibly tripping over Egg the cat. And, since I have a bluetooth and my e-mail routes to my phone as well, if I have to go to the store, I go, without any eyebrows raised as I depart my office. And, honestly, it keeps me out of most of the office gossip, backbiting and drama. I love that, possibly, most of all.

Karen if anyone can set their mind to something and do it well, it is you! Lisa’s advice about a good chair and a room with a door is a good one. Know yourself, do you work best first thing I thing in the a.m, do you work in short 20 minute bursts? Figure out your focus style and set parameters and work out the day. Is it possible to try this for a few days a week before going full time?
Big bad storm last night, the sky was amazing pink color then strangely dark like in the movies kind of dark, spooky. Luckily we have power and all are safe around me, though I’ve got a delayed opening due to power outages. Stay safe everyone.

So over the past 4 days, my husband has walked ...
Friday -- about 100 metres
Saturday -- about 100 metres
Sunday -- about 200 metres
Monday -- two walks adding up to about 500 metres!!!
The walks are still somewhat supported just simply because they won't let me out of the ward with him without the walking frame. But we've been walking in the hospital and outside.
So I put on a pedometer for today's walks and it turns out I was under estimating the distances.
Anyway, today, my husband and I did 1000 steps in the morning and another 1000 steps in the evening.
According to the converters, that's about 1.4 km ... but that seems a bit high. However even if it is just 800 metres, for example, I think that's great!
Machka in Oz
My feet are glad to be home.
Over 14,000 steps today according to the pedometer!!
But 2000 of those were with my husband. And he's using a small "normal" walker now.

Those of us who have been successful on the weight loss journey have made this a change of lifestyle. No one else can provided motivation but it helps to be in the company of others who share your values of healthy eating and exercise. My face to face friends urged me to do things that weren't healthy for me and my friends on this thread supported my new life style. Best wishes to you. Find an eating plan that you can stick to and seek every opportunity to be active.

Good morning my friends!
Another hot day predicted. The heat hit early in Texas. Not a good sign of things to come for the "real" summer time.
Been to the gym. Today was legs day. Gah....my legs are screaming! Squats, Abductor, Adductor, Birddogs, Bridges and Straight Leg Lifts. Then cardio on treadmill.
Trip to UPS and Walmart today. More packing. Stepping. Reading.
Have a good day.

Lisa: the Chicken Stock idea is a good one. We're considering two others, as well. One is to make it into chicken soup, and the other is to make it into dog food. In both cases we would bone the remains of the chicken and cut it into pieces. :grumble.
Machka: I am thrilled that your DH is doing so much better. Yay!!!!!
Starsub99: Welcome! Like Barbie, I had to make a lifestyle change. I needed to count calories and move more to strengthen my muscles and burn calories. I recommend letting MFP set your calorie goals for you. That is what I did. As you lose weight, they will reduce the amount of calories you are allowed until you reach your goal. Then they gradually increase them as you enter the maintenance phase. Eventually I found this group and have stayed here even after I reached my goal. I know that I need the support from this group to keep myself focused and avoid backsliding. :flowerforyou:
The dog is driving me crazy today. I don't know what has him being such a nag. I think he wants to eat, but we aren't eating and don't feed him until we're eating. When we do, he ignores the food. He wants to "eat with the pack." Our dog is more than a little spoiled.

Rebecca, love the virtual hug and good job walking.
Cheri, what a nice idea the Project Linus is.
Suebdew, congrats on the weight loss.
Rori, I’ve always wanted to go to the Poconos. And VT is so close. Maybe someday.
Allie, good for you taking a bad situation and making it fun with friends.
Wendy, Rye & Karen, thanks for the kind words.
Karen, glad things worked out about the home schooling for your grandson.
Allie, good luck with the appraisal.
Machka, 14,000 steps. Holy cow girl!
Starsub99, welcome to the group. You can do this.

Allie, my power goes out multiple times a year for hours sometimes. We have so many battery powered lights it is ridiculous!
When it isn’t horribly timed we try to make it a fun time, like it sounds you did.
If it happens at night, we leave one light burning in the kitchen but make sure to shut off all others so it doesn’t disturb us in our sleep if power comes back.

Doing my third Fast Mimicking Diet week this year right now.
I’ve been finding maintaining my weight about as tough as losing it, and am not at all sanguine with the idea I need to only eat 1350ish calories a day. That doesn’t satisfy me at all and is not sustainable.
FMD and 5:2 and 16:8 intermittent fasting are my ‘hacks’ to keep my average daily calories low enough to not regain weight but let me eat more like a person and less like a bird the other days.
Exercise, strength training and recently stretches are now part of my regular routine.
Personally I hate the ‘change your lifestyle’ way of looking at things. But that way of thinking seems to work for most. Me, I think of these things as ‘supporting’ my lifestyle- like a job. There are things I must do and things I must give up to have the life I want.
Bottom line, it is about finding what works for you. And these ladies are a great help, wonderfully rich resource, and have great depths of empathy and humor to help you along!4 -

Still waiting for some Greek sunshine, even had a rain shower at the beach today. Picture DH and I sitting on a bench in shorts etc under umbrella (I wasn't a girl scout but am always prepared) Hoping for more sunshine tomorrow but will probably be really hot, can only hope.

Hi all,
I didn't sleep well last night and was trying all kinds of ruses to stop me thinking about the house move. Didn't work. I gave up at 5 am and moved into the spare room to read.
It helped a lot to talk to DH over our morning cup of tea in bed. I was bottling up the fact that I was ready to quit. He completely understood and I think we are on the same page. So we are just letting it ride and having no expectations. If it happens it happens. It was good to talk.
Then this afternoon I suggested my favourite thing - going to the council dump. We took glass bottles, bags of books, an old Victorian swing dressing table mirror for the recycling dep and lots of other debris. Cleared out the cupboard under the stairs and found a raincoat with warm lining to give to the charity shop.
Going to the dump always makes me feel sooooooo much lighter and happier.
Then later in the pm both sets of estate agents rang us to give us the latest updates on the situation. It doesn’t make it any better, but it's good to know they are making an effort and up to date.
Feel much more sanguine this evening.
Had fantastic chicken, lentil and cabbage curry this evening , cooked in the IP. It was HUGE! Only 400 calories including the raita. No rice, but I put potatoes in for DH only. Put the cabbage in big wedges at the end. Totally yum.
DH is struggling with a new MP3 player he bought especially to put his favourite CDs on that he hasn't got on his Ipod. Amazon said it was easy to drag and drop from the laptop, but his laptop seems to have put them on an app, not on a music file. He is fed up. I hate new equipment so I'm not getting involved. All his bits of technology work on different systems.

I made gluten free biscuits for DH's birthday breakfast. The flavor was good enough but they had lousy texture that reminded me of hardtack or hockey pucks. :ohwell:I hope next time is better.
Katla.....I sent this site to a friend for gluten free biscuits. Have no personal experience making them.

Lenora,Doesn’t matter how your Sis lives, just sort & toss what suits you.I’m into sorting linens of all types, need to clear them out. Next will be kitchen stuff, pots, pans, dishes & storage containers. All they do is take up room & seldom used.
Clothes are easy for me to toss.No need to keep what I never wear.DH’s Grma had boxes & closets full of new linens, clothes ,shoes etc when she passed. All with price tags still on. His Mom prob told someone to take them or trashed all. She was not a sentimental person.
