Katla, thank you for your kind words. I'm still above a "normal" BMI, I'd love to reach that range. We shall see.
Wishing you a safe and wonderful week in your RV. I looked at interior of the Bounders and it appears to look very similar to our 2007 Sight Seer!

Hooray! Made 7 pots of blackcurrant jam with our glut. Just cooling off on the kitchen surface. I will put pretty labels on.
Also made a HUGE chilli in the IP. Just about to add beans and tomatoes. I always put a liquorice flavoured dry chilli in mine, plus cocoa powder. Heavenly.
Katla - Have a wonderful trip and a peaceful 4th July. That is the anniversary of my wedding to my ex. 48 years.
Now to get on the recumbent bike and catch up on my Scandi noir.

There was someone, sorry I forget who, that wanted to go out on the glass viewing platform at the Sears Tower. My home state being what it is, in Houston, they've built a swimming pool with plexiglass bottom and sides, at the Market Square, 40 stories up:

Kylia, you look so vibrant and healthy, you pretty woman, you! Are your eyes really gray?

Hello ladies! I have not been on here in a long time, and haven't commented ever, I don't think. Anyway, I love the inspiration and support in this group. I am turning 57 this month and really need to get back on track. My goal this month is to lose 5 pounds, get a minimum of 12,000 steps daily, win 3 weekly step competitions, and get back to strength training.10

I keep telling him I know,, my goal this month is to try and eat more fresh fruits and vegetables..and will take a ride later on and get some miracle grow plant food and maybe some fresh tomatoes..
going to take a nap, and study and do laundry.3 -

That would be me. I hope to get to the Sears Tower in August when I go to Chicago to visit my Dad.
Thank you for the link. How exciting it would be to go swimming in that pool! I do wish I could! But my poor DH who suffers from Acrophobia gets upset even thinking about the prospect that I might do so even in my imagination- lol.

Happy July 1st!
Barbie, thanks for giving us the opportunity to be together in this group. I have learned so much from everyone and consider myself truly lucky.
And I love the opportunity to "start over", lol.
My weight is up from a month ago. I have been overactive in the bedtime snack department with salt and sugar, so my mission today is to have ready low sugar and low salt snacks if I absolutely MUST have something after supper.
Goals - keep walking, minimum 6000 steps per day and hopefully lots more. Keep doing the Strong Women Stay Young three times a week. Cut down on computer time and read more. Cut way back on the sugar and salt, see above. Get back on the Fast Diet at least once a week (not eating until 3 pm works well for me) and a 12/3 (or maybe 14/3) food intake regimen.
In June, I was really engrossed in reading about our aging brains and bodies and how to keep our wits and health as we get older, lol. SO MANY experts yet so much conflicting advice and research as far as dairy and meat. Although, most of them agree about cutting out sugar and processed foods, getting exercise and good sleep.
Yesterday I leafed through Valter Longo's book, "The Longevity Diet". He's the creator of the Fasting/Mimicking Diet which, as I understand it, is based on the Mediterranean Diet looks to be quite strict. He also advises very low protein and complete several day fasts to regain health.... that is, until a person reaches late 60's.
However, he refers to "eat what your ancestors ate" - in other words, if you are of German heritage, what did your ancestors eat? His diet protocol is no dairy, no meat - only fish, plenty of beans, veggies, etc.
Yet, I had German ancestors on both sides who ate lots of eggs, whole milk and cheese, meat like pork and beef and chicken (very rarely any fish except canned tuna once a month), potatoes, veggies from their gardens, fruits generally in heavy syrup, no beans except baked beans a couple times a year with plenty of brown sugar and bacon, pies and cakes and cookies loaded with sugar and butter and lard. Little processed, all good home cooking. They ate this way all of their lives!
So, I'm trying to process that and look at my diet in a different way... how can I eat like my ancestors but make some tweaks to keep my brain and body healthier? There was diabetes and dementia and clogged arteries which took a few out in their 80's - but the healthy ones lived well into their 90's.
At any rate, I'm looking forward to July.

I watered my friend's yard this morning early as I was walking Sasha after Bessie went home. I took Sasha off the leash while I ran the sprinkler and watered the hanging plants. Suddenly I heard Sasha bark and turned expecting to see someone in the yard or next door. Instead, Sasha had seen her reflection in the garden mirror and was barking at herself.

Heartfelt thanks Barbie. You are our lighthouse!
Michele, thanks for the Bubba info. Have to smile at the brand name... ;}
Karen in VA, love your goal, That IS the key, when we take that one step it all starts to fall into place.
Rebecca, Oops, didn't mean to stomp on your post, seems I was on your wavelength . . . then (no no not THAT) made me snort my tea
Machka, hope the home care worker is self-sufficient and doesn't impinge too much on your space, either physical or emotional. I'm imagining the universe sending you a kindly-but-brusque sister of the old fashioned variety.
Barbie, wish Joe would channel Jake! I love exploring... Joe not so much. ;}
Kylia, thought you were a cutie in the 7 yrs ago picture... then... WOW!
Katla, safe travels, peaceful Fourth.

Lanette Are we sure that you and I are not related? (Albeit you from a taller branch of the family?). So much of what you mention about your life, or the things you do or read are part of mine!
Longo’s book is fascinating. Musings on Longo’s book and research follow, possibly uninteresting to anyone other than Lanette:And yes, the protein advice is all over the place and Longo comes down on a much lower protein intake, especially red meats, than the typical American diet. Right now, while I’m actively trying to gain muscle and strength I’m just remembering Longo’s protein advice, not acting on it. I may reassess that in a year or two.
As for the rest - I take his advice on basing my diet on the Mediterranean diet, but incorporate foods I seem to have a genetic predisposition to (potatoes for instance are one of the few always satiating foods for me). I know that fish protein is much more the way to go than white/red meats but I’ve never been able to abide the taste of fish. So I’m going with high quality lean white meat a lot. Frankly, I just don’t see myself giving up my red meat completely- but I no longer eat the burgers, hot dog, mystery meat fast food- only home cooked roasts and lean steaks. (oh, and home made beef jerky). I do his 5 day Fast Mimicking diets several times a year as well (well a homemade version, I can’t afford the price of his 5 day Prolon box meals).
I eat very little ‘refined’ or ‘processed foods’. Rarely eat any added sugar (Homemade Christmas treats still the major exception). I Eat minimal grains (usually only old fashioned oats or minor amounts of wheat in foods prepared by others) and pretty much no rice, bread, noodles or pasta. I eat minimal dairy (small amounts of butter and cheddar cheese mostly). I cook with Avocado oil (healthy profile similar to olive oil but no taste like veggie oil) when oil is called for and keep it to a minimum. I had started these habits while losing weight but reading his book solidified them into ‘good eating’ in my mind.
So, I guess I read Longo’s book and research with great interest and incorporated much but not all of his advice into my eating habits. I’m going for sensible but not overboard- since the research is so new and still contradictory to some other seemingly sound advice.
Higher protein than he recommends really seems to work for me. But eliminating the highly fatty and fried versions, and when financially possible, attempting to get grass fed meats, had become my eating ‘good eating’ rule for proteins.
And, I’m happy to say, it was his book that finally motivated me to get a daily quota of veggies! And I’ve been doing fantastic on that front. Regularly getting 7 to 10 servings of fruit and veg a day.
And Lanette, have I shared a picture of my beloved childhood pet - a miniature schnauzer? The dog by which I still compare every dog I meet to? Lol

Rye - I think we are related! I think you are several steps ahead of me and again, I thank you for steering me into the world of Fasting. I always enjoy your posts and have learned so much from your research ;-).
Today, I'm reading "Brain Food" by Lisa Mosconi, also born in Italy. Looks to be quite good and more in line with the way I eat - eggs, whole dairy, grass fed meat, organic. She is a fan of the 5:2 fasting - I don't see her mentioned in Mosley's FastDiet book, but she might have been in his You-Tube presentation. Something to watch again.
Please post a photo of your mini schnauzer - if you already did, I can't recall.

Goals:
-Exercise at the gym 6 out of 7 days
-Eat at home, eat the food in my freezer and pantry first
-Dig out the unused garden patch and prepare it for grass seed
-don’t play numbers game (2048) on phone—horrible time waster! I haven’t played for 2 days straight a new record!
Here’s to a productive, healthy month!
NYKAREN
I have two games on my tablet, a puzzle game, and a starwars game. You feel so productive when you're playing it though. If there was a way to hide the game for a bit, so I don't see the icon daily, I would. Uninstalling it, would delete all my progress!!
How about Mon/Wed/Fri NO games? Then just Tues and Thurs as gaming days only 10 minutes/ twice a day? Deal?

Machka, I know you are happy to have your husband at home.
My advice on the caregiver situation based on watching my mother deal with round the clock caregivers for her brother for 9 months. Decide what level of comfort you can live with and set boundaries from the beginning. For example, are you ok with them drinking your tea or do you prefer they bring their own? What about food or snAcks? Do you want them prowling in your cabinets or to ask you for needed supplies. What about smoking? You’d be surprised at the number of caregivers who smoke. What about phone? WiFi? My mother did not set boundaries and had issues with caregivers who are up all her food, stayed on the phone, and encroached on her personal space, in particular the kitchen, way too much. The unprofessionalism I witnessed from my uncle’s caregivers was outrageous.6 -
Katie~ My friend Bev is in a similar situation... her 89 yr old mom lives in her home.. has severe anxiety issues,OCD and all very frail.. they finally got a live in, Bev works in boston full time and it is very hard to manage caretaking for her mom long distance.. she also has a mentally challanged brother that she is guardian too. She has her hands full..
they have the live in and she takes good care of June, but June can't verbalize that there is just something she doesn't like.. and doesnt want to hurt feelings..I for one am glad it didn't come to that with my dad, but my DSIL has to deal with caretakers taking care of her mom.. It is a very tough road to hoe.2 -
Happy July everyone! Back at it after two years away 57 year old Portland OR girl needing/wanting to drop about 35 lbs and be healthier in general - better eating habits, more movement, less stress eating, declutter my home, mind and body... I see many familiar names still active and popping up on my feed. I found great support here, great tips, good advice and good folks dealing with the same struggles. Target is to get down to 150 for my birthday next May.

I can identify with the idea of a clean start since I just got my laptop back from getting fixed and replaced my dead Fitbit. I wasn't perfect with logging last week but hope now that I don't have to log everything with my phone I will improve. I did get back to my exercise routine and did step it up some with adding in some small walks. We weren't organized yet as to meal plans after our trip to pick up my daughter last month and we actually celebrated her birthday twice with Greek and Hawaiian food last week. Her birthday was at the end of May and we planned to celebrate once she got home.
I usually don't have any exercise planned on Sundays but my daughter wanted to get duck eggs to make jung (Chinese sticky rice steamed in tea leaves) so we went to the Farmer's Market in Ballard (Seattle) and there was a long walk from our car so even though we found the duck eggs right away we walked through most of the market. I guess I broke in my fitbit well for its 1st day.
I read through the pages so far to get to know you all but won't be able to keep that up for long when this thread gets longer. Hope the transition goes smoothly Machka. Love sister pictures. I have 2 older sisters. One lives in town the other in France but visits alot! I'm in my 60s too Valeri Rose. Thanks Barbie.
July resolutions:- get back into exercise routine and add in walks on the other days
- get back to eating healthy dinners at home while improving weekday breakfasts
- get back to logging every meal
- start to slowly lose weight again
- increase water intake
- do better at getting to sleep earlier during the week days (I like to read and can get carried away)

I hope you'll keep coming back. There is no upper limit on age on this thread. Since I lost weight, I feel younger than ever. I line dance twice a week and would do more if there were more classes in my town. I walk my dogs for about three hours a day, work in my yard, and ride my exercise bike while watching TV. I don't have any health challenges for which I am very grateful.
