Happy Wednesday ladies!
Kim - add me to the "Happy Birthday" chorus today. Totally understand your birthday wishes. Like others here, I generally don't want a "big deal". When my 60th bday rolled around several years ago, my good friend decided to have a BIG surprise party for me at a local tavern... DH and I would eat there now and then. Well, a week before the event is when DH fell off the roof and broke his back/major leg trauma. So I had the perfect excuse to have her cancel the big deal. Silver lining in that cloud.
Penny - loved reading your simple pleasures. Not having summertime mosquitos is a big pleasure I would think, lol. My pleasure is early mornings when I go for a walk - lucky to be 1/2 mile from a small state park, or work out and watch the birds and garden, or just spend time before DH gets up with our old dog on the laptop catching up with you ladies. Quiet and cool. Then after hours of daylight, 8 pm eventually rolls around and I take puppy out for her evening run, then it's bedtime for me and her and the tablet and a detective series. When I am tempted to worry or gripe, I remind myself "These are the good old days". I have so much to be thankful for.
Heather - your move is getting REAL! After all that waiting, the house will soon be yours. How will you move your household goods when the times comes - will you rent a moving van or box truck and do it yourselves or hire a little team to load and unload?
Kelly - that chicken tune was a scream!!!
Pip - do you have several chickens for your pups or do they share that one and if so, does the squeaker still work? We had one for our kids a few years ago and it was a goner pretty quickly.

My first positive step this morning, logging my food. For a week or so I haven't bothered, and have settled yet again for not putting myself first. I know what needs to be done. So a week of snacking, I am 5 lbs up. Was I stressed after husband's vertigo thing, seeing him in such a state? You'd think I wouldn't backtrack so, and be able to handle these things! I am ashamed I didn't process things better. So its about feeling the feelings, and realizing time has no meaning when it comes to chaotic events in your life. Aaand, I have to gain 5 lbs to realize this...uugh!
Simple gratefulness:
Waking up and hearing dear husband emptying the dishwasher.
Looking out and seeing deer lying in the backyard.
Hugging my eldest son in a regular basis.
When I wake up and my hair looks amazing!
Picking raspberries that grow in my side yard.
Hearing my other two sons voices in good spirits when they call.
Playing the piano in the entryway of some shops. It does give me joy!
Making some of you smile.
Fixing food that tickles my pallet.

Well for the second time I’ve lost a long post. Ugh. I told you all about my having stomach flu but won’t repeat all that. Leave it to say I am better but dehydrated.
Machka- I wish you could feel how proud of you I am. You are an amazing woman to accomplish all that you have with all the struggles you have been through. Celebrate the day and celebrate all you have accomplished. Good on yA.
Gratitude - what a wonderful word. I am grateful every day for being alive. When you have had a near death experience you don’t take anything for granted. Live each moment and be grateful.
Barbie- wishing you healing for your back. Hoping the therapy will help you.
Allie- so sorry for your recent loss of your Dfil and friend.

Heather, congratulations on the progress for your move. You have been assertive and patient and busy and doing all the right things to make this happen.
About gratitude. I learned that gratitude is an action, not just a spontaneous feeling. I have used gratitude to lift me from despair and it works. It doesn't matter so much what you are grateful for, but that you are grateful. Some of you have mentioned being grateful for having things in your life that I am grateful for not having. The important thing is that I am grateful for what I have.
I think I am feeling better. Yesterday was the first day that the pain meds actually seemed to be relieving enough pain for me to feel better. Last night I was nearly pain free while lying down. This morning I was able to walk around the block with my friend and the dogs. There's a long way to go, but for awhile it seemed as though there were no change at all.
Saturday is the wedding where I had agreed to lead line dancing at the reception. I told the bride and groom last week that I'd be unable to attend or lead the dancing. I was sorry to let them down. Privately I realized that I had been concerned because neither Jake nor I have any clothing suitable to wear to a wedding. Now I don't have to worry about that.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KIM!
So I am at work and should be working but wanted to stop by. First, Thank you for the gratitude question....I am thankful every day for the life I am living. When I have a bad day, there is always someone more in need than I am, and I have to put things back into perspective. Life can be frustrating in lots of areas, but I try to keep a positive outlook most of the time.
Machka CONGRATULATIONS!!!! That is a major accomplishment! With your crazy life these days it is even more impressive!
Secondly, whoever mentioned clutterbug.....THANK YOU! Now I better understand my methods that have worked for me in the past as well as how to better incorporate my style with my DH. He is a cricket with OCD! Definitely more "micro" and I am true Ladybug "macro" organizer. We both dislike clutter, but his hidden organization is much more "perfect" than mine. The funny thing is that a few years ago I cleaned my closet and was able to maintain that using basically her ideas. The main thing I can't maintain is paperwork. I hate figuring out what file! Guess that wouldn't make me any help to Machka I am currently deciding what I need to purchase to make my filing easier once I get to organizing non-sight things. Example of different organizing styles....My drawers are organized by 1 or 2 style items per drawer. Like underwear and bras, not folded pretty, not stacked, but in the right drawers. My DH actually didn't like the way I put his folded underwear, he didn't say a word, just stacked it nice and neat I love having a little insight into myself. So once again THANK YOU!
SIL just went home sick.....please don't let me get it!

Machka, of course you are going to the graduation! You deserve it girl. I expect to see a picture of you in your hat and gown.
Went to the dr today. First post op visit. They cut off the cast so I got to see what it looks like. Stitches and dried blood. Dr was impressed with my flexibility. Minimal swelling. Incision holding together well.
I’ve got a new green cast on. I think it needs polka dots, don’t you think? Will be in the cast for 3-4 more weeks, then back into the full boot and pt. I can start putting weight on the foot in 2 weeks. I’ll be back at work on the 27th part time for the first week. So I’ll have my scooter at work for when I get tired.

Working today then on vacation until next Thursday. We are not leaving for Denver until Saturday, but looking forward to the time off and getting somethings done.
Barbie--Prayers and hugs for you and Jake. Glad that you both are taking care of yourselves. Good news that you were able to walk some and feel better. Please do not try and do to much to soon.
Tracey--Sounds like you had a great time with your friend. My BBF and I have been friends for 45 years and everytime we would get together it was just pickup where we left off. This last Christmas she had a couple major strokes and now things are do different. Still enjoy the time I spend with her just not the same. I miss my friend and I see her come out sometimes, but different.
Penny--So glad you are posting, missed you and hearing about your life up North. I am grateful for my DH and life we share. We may not have a lot of money, but we enjoy spending time riding the motorcycle and geocache. LIfe is good.
Allie--sorry for you loss.
Heather--Great news on the moving and that things are falling into place.

I have planned a housewarming gift for one of my equestrian friends and wanted to wrap it as a cabin. I am not skilled enough to accomplish that, so I put pretty paper on it. I'll be sending it along to the next equestrian meeting with a friend. At the moment, we have a loaner car and both of our cars are at the dealer getting serviced. :ohwell:

Yes, we are a bit closer, but it could all fall through at any moment if one person pulls out of the chain. The docs did not arrive in the post today, but we wait in hope for tomorrow.
I am hopeful, but definitely not counting my chickens.
DH spoke to the solicitors today about money matters. He seems to have cleared up a few puzzlements.
Saw my friend with the damaged ligament. Her cast is just like yours, Terry. Same colour. She is cheerful, though majorly annoyed with the hospital, who have been apalling. She is going to make a Formal Complaint.
Very tired tonight. Working my way through most of a bottle of AF wine. :laugh: What a great invention! That is something I am hugely grateful for - decent AF drinks. An enormous improvement in my life.
The family in Hove are off tomorrow on a house swap in France. I can hardly bear to think about them all being in the air together. Don’t go there, Heather.

Barbie - how encouraging you appear to be getting "over the hump" on your back problem. Rori, hope you are feeling better.
I had an "AHA" moment this morning. This past week, I've been suffering from pain in my sit-down bones. There are tendons there that I must have strained so have curtailed some of my SWSY exercises and it hasn't gotten worse but still achey. Also pulled a muscle or did something crazy just opening a window a couple days ago=zinger pain in the middle of my back. YUK. Took ibuprofen which helped but gave me a stomach ache.
And to top it off, my right hand little finger joint was hot and swollen the past few days. Arthritis this time of year? Maybe because I've been eating more tomatoes that can cause inflammation?
So I did a mental review of what I've been doing differently, and it struck me that a few weeks ago I stopped taking a daily turmeric supplement. I ran out and the ones I take - Curamed - are expensive and I wasn't sure they were doing any good.
I dug around in the cupboard and by golly, I found another nearly empty bottle of them, took one and bingo. Everything that hurt this morning is 90% better. So ordered another bottle which should be here Friday.

> Having the flexibility in my daily schedule to nap, meditate and/or study something interesting to me

Thankful today for my chiropractor's skills, the condo jacuzzi and my body's ability to heal. Feeling so much better. Stay well, friends. There is so much in life to enjoy.

Yes turmeric is an anti inflammatory. I add more to may cooking when I feel pain. I also add black pepper to get the anti cancer benefit. I do not know why the black pepper is necessary or how the work together. I also add ginger too. My dental hygienist takes ginger if she feels a migraine coming on.
Out temp are not too bad low 80's but humidity is starting to climb.
Simple pleasure today looking out kitchen window and seeing white phlox in bloom. I remember as a child picking a bloom and sucking on the end to taste the sweetness of the nectar. Smell delightful.

This is so true. Being Grateful has really changed my life over the last year. I had been on anti-depressants for close to 6 years off and on and have not had any since December. I truly believe Gratitude and being thankful has helped with that immensely.
Glad you were able to have a better day yesterday and able to get a walk in today.

We're baaaack! The kids had a ball at the Farmer's Market! Visser Farms brought some baby chicks for the kids to pet and hold and another farmer brought a piglet. One of my kiddos cried when the farmer said that they raise their pigs to make ham, bacon, pork chops, etc. We covered this information at my daycare this week, but it is a WHOLE different ball game when you have cute baby animals looking at you! lol
Heather- I am happy things are moving along for you; but I will reserve my big congrats for when you are in and papers signed etc. The whole "chain" of people makes me nervous for you!
Pip- I am positive, even though your rubber chicken has no squeaker, Floyd, Yogi and Bullwinkle are trying to play Pachelbel's Canon on it!
Terry- I think you need to get a little alligator stamp and make it a designer (Lacoste) cast. And look at you with your foot way high in the air! There's a resistance work out for you! How many leg lifts with a cast on can you do?

Gratitude- I took BArbie's advice and started a gratitude journal last spring. I keep a daily journal; but my gratitude journal is different. Each day I write down five things that I am thankful for. Sometimes it is things that I have, sometimes it is things that I don't have, I allow repeats because some things need to be repeated. The journal helps keep me out of the pit of despair and self pity. A big thing that surprised me, I never liked my job before I started the journal. I felt like being a childcare provider was kind of where I ended up because of not having a formal education beyond high school. I felt trapped. The journal helped me see the little things. Helped me see the work that I have put into my childcare home and business. Helped me see the non monetary rewards.
This is the other thing that changed my life:
Becoming a grandma opened my heart. I think it was closed because I was unhappy in my job, I thought the kids were "out to get me", and the constant wear and tear on things was depressing and frustrating. Having Joaquin come along somehow showed me how to love this child that wasn't mine and enabled me to love all of these other children. Helping my daughter with patience in raising him has given me patience with these little ones in my care. This past year has been a revelation and for that I am eternally grateful!
You ladies are mentioned in my gratitude journal multiple times because you help keep me sane and on the right path! And I love you dearly for that! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)

KJ - I'm with you. I never was comfortable in the presence of small children until I had my own grandchildren. Now I am much more tolerant, even welcoming, when children come into a restaurant etc. Partly that's just being around my grands and partly that's seeing the amazing example of my DH in the way he relates to them. I can enjoy "playtime" so much more now. I also admire my DDIL in the way she manages them.
My own life with my children was chaotic and I was always wishing the time away. I loved them, of course, but i was just doing time and resenting how much they took away from my life. Now, although I can't do it for long, (I haven't got your dedication and energy), I can truly enter into the child's world. I find it quite wonderful. My conversion into a proper Granny is one of the miracles of my life.
Sooooooo glad the backs seem to be on the mend.

Kelly, you are my hero! The job you do is so incredibly important and you are so derned good at! You should earn more than a doctor, in my opinion.
Machka, I am so inspired by you and how you have persevered towards your goals despite the most daunting personal setback and obstacles in your path. I wonder if the university will have an online link so we can watch you on the stage?
Lanette, I also really notice it if I miss my turmeric. Some studies show that the whole spice works synergistically together and is more effective than an extract of just curcurmec. I add turmeric to lots of my foods and drinks. All my rice is golden and it hides well in any red sauce for pasta, or stew, or on eggs or in almond milk drinks or in smoothies. I also take glucosamine to keep my joints well-oiled.
I love dwelling on things I am grateful for. I could spend all day writing them down in my journal and savouring them! But I got to go feed them. LOL Wendy8 -
Heather: I am sending good thoughts for a successful new home purchase and move I hope you will be happy in your new place and have plenty of time to enjoy your grandchildren.

Kelly: I agree with Wendy. You are brilliant at what you do, and I also consider you a hero in the lives of your daycare children and their families.
I just picked and washed blueberries, sorted out the unripe ones and froze the rest. They will give us natural vitamin C and other goodies all year long. I plan to prune the plants back after there is a good freeze. :bigsmile:

This is in line with what I think about gratitude/thankfulness. Eucharistic living. Giving thanks in all circumstances...painful times as well as joyful ones. I live with family members who have chronic health problems. When life seems out of control, I have made it a point of giving thanks for all of it. My family has also come to expect this question when they are in dark times ... "give me 5 things you are thankful for." We've sat in emergency rooms and played this "game" ... it always helps.
But on a lighter note, there are simple things that just give me inexplicable joy. You'll think me simple, but I truly get a kick every time I step on the retractable cord button of my vacuum! No rewinding! I am a sucker for slick marketing and recently bought 'glo-bowl" lights for our toilets. They're motion censored and do a kaleidoscope of colors at night so you don't have to turn on the bathroom light. There is something inordinately funny to me knowing that multi-colored lights are shining on my *kitten*. I smile every night. (They will eventually be pitched as they design is sort of stupid from a sanitary position).
The truth is, I could overrun this thread with my thanksgivings ...
