Michele on broccoli stems. It depends if they organic. Organic no not organic yes. I like to keep the peel on if I can because it means more fiber. They do need to steam longer with peels on.
Karen watched the 20/20 bio on Aretha last night. She was a class act. What a voice!
I went to lunch with my friend who is a doctor yesterday. She reminded me that fat also collects the toxins from our bodies. Losing too quickly releases those toxins faster than our body can process them. She did say the high fiber is an excellent way to get rid of the toxins long with drinking enough water. Working up a sweat is good too because then you are getting your skin involved in getting rid of toxins too. That is another reason I why I am trying to minimize putting chemicals on my skin.
It is still better to lose the weight just do it in a way that is healthy. Your liver also removes much of the toxins too so your diet should support liver health. I think this means go easy on medications if you can and alcohol when losing weight.
She was wonderful to talk to. She had gone on three very interesting workshops in July. One was one your birth experience and how it effects and family history and how it affects your life. Another was on play therapy and how it is used to help mothers who had trouble bonding with their children. She did get a degree in social work too. The last workshop was on setting intention to create the higher self you want to be.

Hello and happy Friday! First week back at this. Went well, but I tend to do that in the beginning - long haul, that is the problem.
Linda - I too just turned 50 and am new to this message board. You have made some awesome strides to better health. Congrats!
Lenora - also Congrats - those numbers are great!
My weekend goal is to be very very good for 43 hours so I can splurge for 5. I am an amateur wine maker. All kinds of fruit wines. A local family holds a huge wine tasting event (like over 50 wines to taste all made by local makers) with so much food! I plan to drink and eat things I should not. So fruit and veggies the rest of the weekend is my plan (: An extra walk to two.
Have a great weekend!

This is my "before" pic. This party was my brother's 60th and I felt so bad I started my diet (as I saw it then) the following Monday. That was over 6 years ago. It took me 18 months to lose 57 lbs. I despised exercise and was in constant pain from my joints and out of breath just walking.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx

Well today will be my first weight trading circuit. So we’ll see how that goes. Excited actually to do it. Need to build up my muscles because I can feel how weak I am doing my cardio. I actually tried to do the elliptical last night lol oh my gosh, that thing is HARD! I got right off I couldn’t even get the pedals to move lol. So I went back to the good ‘ol treadmill and walked and got a good workout in. Hope you all have a great day!

Today I felt very overwhelmed when I woke up. I did my best to persuade DH to ring the solicitors again, and he said he would. The Hove estate agents rang for a update and then our agents rang us. So DH did ring them up. There seems to be a hitch with the buyer's buyers solicitors. So that involves our buyers chasing them. We have said we want to exchange asap and move early September.
I was pretty frustrated and DH was frustrated with me.
I decided to do something, so I rang the removal company to get a fresh estimate and to ask them about September availability. They are coming back next week to see how much stuff we have got rid of and perhaps lower the quote.
That felt a bit better, so I got a few sentences written on my new volume of my memoir. Just a few, but it all helps with the angst. Then I tackled the very last pile of papers and managed to bin a whole lot of notes on workshops I had taken part in. Mainly drama and performance, but also a residential one on water! I kept one set of notes on a performance I gave when I pretended to be selling sets of knives. You can imagine where that one went. Quite proud of that one. Also on my mentor Eugenio Barba. I stayed for a month in Denmark at his theatre company. Happy memories.
Plus I stripped some beds and got them in the wash , got the yoghurt on to ferment and vacuum shrank a couple of pillows. Very satisfying.
After lunch I ran my 5k. That got rid of the residue of the frustration. I listened to a couple of new Soul Music downloads, "Boys Don't Cry" and "The Way You Look Tonight " .
Lanette - I am another avocado lover. I have half a one almost every afternoon as part of my snack. Yum.
I feel very deprived if we haven't got any.
Lots of love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxx5 -
Here are before and after pictures for anyone who hasn't seen them.

Wow! pictures are truly inspiring. I have my before. I do not have an after. Will soon (:2

Lanette: Google "Skinny on Fat Food Pyramid." You'll find several choices. I want to frame mine and put it someplace I can see it. Right now I have it hanging on a very busy magnet board in my office. :flowerforyou:
Lisa: I hope that you're able to make adjustments in your job that will suit you better.
Dr. Katie: Congrats on a VERY GOOD day.
Margaret: Your doctor friend seems to have been to some really great workshops. Good for her and all of her patients. :flowerforyou:
Heather: What a transformation you have made for yourself. WOW!!! My weight loss story is similar. I found the motivation to change because of a horseback riding lesson injury that compromised my left knee. The orthopedic doctor I saw didn't suggest surgery as a treatment plan; he recommended knee-strengthening exercises. I did them while driving and they did a great job strengthening my knee. Later I realized that I needed to lose weight but had no idea how to do it. I googled weight loss and found this site & Weight Watchers. This site made sense to me so I chose it. Here I am, several years later and many pounds lighter. This system works for me, and the social support from Women 50+ is miraculous.
Lynn in WI: I hope you enjoy your wine tasting. I cook with wine, but don't drink it anymore. It turns out that I like it WAY too well & moderation is not possible for me. The wine I prefer to cook with is excellent stuff. I use boxed wines for cooking. My choices are Botabox Cabernet Sauvnignon or Botabox Pino Grigio, depending on what I am cooking. My wine drinking guests love these wines. The boxes do a great job of preventing oxidization.
Yoga today!!! Yay!

Lynn - Thank you - it's been a struggle - might post my before and after (or in between) the before and where I am at this point in time I'm beginning to think that my body has decided to hover around 160lbs. I want my BMI to be within the 'normal' scale.
Lanette - I love avocados, too, are you saying you also eat the skin? I eat a baked potato with the skin on it, Louis got me started on that. Now that he wears dentures, he can't chew them, so I get them to go into my 'doggie bag'.
Just made reservations for trip to beach. We're going to let Trey keep Cracker. The spa has gone up to $25 a day and we'll be gone from a Friday through 2 weekends. I just hope that Luna (Trey's lab) doesn't get irritated about her and grabs her by the neck. If they let that stupid Boston Bull terrier out, no telling where they might end up. I think Luna takes he exploring, hoping he will get lost and die. I worry about Cracker; but, Trey loves her and our cat, so I don't think we'll have to worry. He'll let her get out of her crate and stay outside; then he will bring her in at some point before they go to bed. I just don't want him to put her up too early in the crate; and, I definitely do not want her to stay outside at night. Too many things go bump in the dark and she has a squealy bark when she is afraid.

Barbara “coaster” do you have room for an RV until after Labor Day?

Katla - thanks for the idea, I checked Google yes there are a lot of food pyramids as you described. I see the old USDA food pyramid has been replaced with "My pyramid" -- which is very confusing. They are still emphasizing low fat and high carbs from what I can tell. And the "My Plate" focuses on high carbs as well. Fat the enemy.
Heather - I don't think I've ever seen your "before" picture. Your "after" photo is a testament to your healthy eating and exercise, you are in great shape! It's interesting that many of us were led to strength training because of physical injury-the need to have stronger muscles. With me, it was terrible bursitis in my knee. The doc offered me no suggestions so one of you mentioned strength training and the light bulb went on.
Barbie - today is MRI day. Thank goodness you can have the test in bliss, lol. Hoping for an answer to your pain and an easy fix. Your before and after photos are also fabulous.
Rye - glad you finally made it to Chicago by the way! Hope all continues to go well with family. Other than O'Hare I haven't been downtown in oh, maybe 40 years, lol. Used to live 150 miles from there so it wasn't unusual to bop up with a girlfriend for a day.
Running out of ideas on what to cook for DH as usual, so we've settled on getting a pizza. I reckon he'll get a couple meals and that's it - supper tonight and tomorrow. I can eat most of the toppings (he likes Hawaiian), all I have to do is leave the crust and pineapple alone and that's not a problem. Will still have my huge salad with avocado.
KarenNY, give me the word and I'll have a big salad ready for you! Hope your DH is on the mend. That's one of the things I dislike about flying... all those new germs.
Our pupster Rosie gets her yearly vet visit this morning. Rabies vaccination (they've found a rabid bat just a few miles from us plus it's the law in this state) and something else. I am going to inquire about running a titer next year instead of automatically giving vaccination boosters every year. There are vets in the area which are OK with it. Might be more expensive but from an overall health standpoint it might be better right now, will see what he says.
OK ladies, that's a wrap!

Lenora - I don't eat avocado skin OR the seed (tho I guess it's edible?? NO thanks!). I just peel it and chunk up the flesh. I love potato skins too. Some folks spoon out the tater part and just eat the skins. Sounds yummy!

Today is shopping day, so my list is:
Cabbage head
lettuce head
Zucchini
Salad bag
Yogurts
Cottage cheese
Various beans ( canned)
Pretty darn healthy stuff, and then I need items to make dinners. My dinners are:
French Dips
French toast
Ham and eggs
Tacos
Steak and baked potato
Hamburger Helper
Pretty much all those meals I won't eat. I will however saute some veggies in the pan I cooked the steak and also the ham in. People always ask me, why don't your husband and you eat the same. Its a battle that I am tired of playing. For years I just ate without a thought to my likes. Its only been recently that I have discovered I truly don't wish to eat 90% of what fix for my husband. It is not my job to convince him to eat my way. If I'm really hungry, I fix mine first, then his, and he's totally cool with that. Its a plan that works for us. I do get a sense of pride when he eats a big meal, and he's all happy, and saying it was good.
My neighbor has a plum tree! So keeping an eye out for when they ripen and some fall to my side of the fence👍!
My two cents on crying. I am a Gemini. Need I say more???? I wear my heart on my sleeve. I cry at the drop of a hat. I cry at commercials, and I cry when I'm sad or happy, Gemini's aren't particular about that! I'm fact, for maximum health, I watch a sappy love story each week to get a good cry in.
Have a good day all!

I am curious about titers as well. My 6 month old pup had to just get a booster one month after she got her regular one because she found a bat and decided to play with it before i knew what was happening. Vet suggested booster asap and sent bat for testing. Was negative so poor Maggie is rabied up big time. Wonder about that decision but too late now.

So yesterday was a lot of waiting to hear if our host could travel up to his lake home ... luckily that turned out well, and we were all able to get on the road from Chicago to Northern Wisconsin. The first photo was taken at is house in the Chicago suburbs while we waited, he has a great sense of humor!
Then one of John’s friends wanted to go to the Cheese Castle, but I was quite disappointed. A cement building with a semi castle looking facade and a ho-hum store with lots of. Cheese.
Then the dangerous squalls we had to navigate to get to the lake in Northern Wisconsin. But, we all made it!
Potato skins: YAY!
Separate meals from spouse: Necessary for me too. We try to eat at same time but very different food usually.
Trip so far: Very good in between some travel almost disasters. lol

Again I have spent the morning getting caught up because I couldn't get time yesterday.
Heather - Thanks so much for clarifying your calorie regime to me. How frustrating for you and your DH with your house purchasing.
Wendy I had a very "thick" moment, I was looking for a snowflake in the orange sky. It took me embarrassingly long to realize you were talking about me. I am blaming that on my long sleepless night last night.
What an awesome outfit you created. I like the white pants myself.
Lenora - I have people on my fb that keep friending me too, I unfollow them. That way I don't see what they post and don't get irritated but they don't question why I'm unfriending them. I hate drama.
Katla - Our air quality is still poor and predicted to be all weekend.
NYKaren - Sorry to hear your hubby is sick while you're travelling, hope he's soon. I am not a sweet person either, but I absolutely love walking in to sweet shops and just smelling!
Lisa in Arkansas - I am cry more when I am angry than at any other time. I hate it, it's not something I can control and as a Manager have cried in a previous bosses office. He at least knew me well enough to know it was anger and frustration not weakness. Being a man, he just did what he could to appease me to get me to stop. LOL
Terry - Its so unfortunate that you are in a cast, but you made it very pretty
Mainelylisa - I have a before pic that I don't know if I will ever post or not. Maybe when I get to where I need to be. My previous profile pic, showed my big love handles and that was a hard one to post. I did it to remind myself daily of why I was doing what I was doing.
Machka- I think it's totally understandable that your weight loss goals have taken a back burner. Hopefully you will soon find more time for yourself as your hubby continues to improve.
Kim from N. California - There is only myself and one other employee that works in teh office. All the other staff are out in the field. Truthfully it is his livelihood I am most concerned about as he is the sole bread winner in his family as his wife is disabled. I have told him that I felt if he had another opportunity come up it would be in his best interest to take it. There are 3 more full time employed staff that would have no problems finding other work and would be receiving notice. All the others are casual and have other sources of income.
DrKatieBug - Oh you made me laugh! Since my objective when I was first hired was to not kill the cactus I should consider myself accomplished. I have posted a picture of said cactus below. So happy for you that you had a spa day!
Well since Tuesday I have not heard a word from the VP, I have heard from the Bus. Development Manager and he told me he won't be up anymore that I just need to figure out how to do it. He did say they will hire a salesperson, but I can't see that happening.
I had an amazing visit today with the other young lady that is starting her business. This girl is going to go places in the world. She met a web developer today that wants to invest in her company! One step closer for her to be able to hire me full time!

Lynn - We are back from the vet. Found out the Rabies law in WA state changed so that if your dog goes like 5 days over the "due date" for rabies revaccination, the dog can only get a one year one and not a three-year! I was miffed - I told them had I known I certainly could have brought her in a month ago to get the three year shot. It wasn't that expensive, just the principle of the thing. Anyhow seems like it's $45 to walk in the vet's door anymore. And they are good at "do you want us to do a baseline blood test?" He has a new building and a very large staff so I'm sure he needs all the income he can get, lol.
Also he mentioned the one-year shot just kind of in passing when I said "she's OK for three years now" and he told me no. Had I not said anything, I don't think I would have been the wiser.
I asked about titers. He said the main drawback is expense, it runs around $50 for each disease they are checking antibodies for so can get up to $250 or $300 pretty quickly compared to the cost of the vaccine which is a fraction of that.
In some states, pet owners are allowed to buy the rabies vaccine and inoculate their own pets. Looks like the Rabies vaccine makers were successful at lobbying in WA State this spring - I wonder what next.

Hi! My name is Sharon. I’m a retired Teamster, hence the “trucker743”. I am 75, and almost a month into the four-month protocol for bypass candidates. My peak weight was in June at 262#. In the picture, taken 8/15, I weigh 248.8. It will have to do as my “Before” pic.
I’m having some trouble getting in enough protein without exceeding my carbs or fats. (Seems to be either-or, not both.
I’m a bit scared, not of the surgery, but of the immense lifetime changes I will need to put in place. I think I’m looking for encouragement and suggestions. Cat pics are also welcome! 😉😉10 -
I am in Washington State also, east of Seattle near the foothills of the Cascades. Thankfully the worst of the smoke is gone today. We have clouds instead! 😪3

I usually just use Trucker. There are so very many Sharons in our age bracket!
I'm wondering how I join the group. I did apply to join Women Over 50, but I guess this doesn't make me a part of the month-to-month discussions.

You joined by posting. Keep on coming back and you will find us a welcoming group of ladies.1

Hi Trucker and welcome here. You don't actually have to join this group as it is not a closed group, but open to anyone. You can just read and post, nice and easy. You can save the link though, so that it's easy to find the group again. You SAVE by clicking on the little gray star at the top, above the search icon. It will turn gold and then you can click on the gray star at the very very top anytime you want to pop in for a visit.
Barbie, thanks for the before and after pic. You have done amazing at keeping the weight off for such a long time. Did you walk much before, I know you walk a lot now. Did you just change what food you ate, or how much you ate, or did you change your exercise habits too?
It poured with rain all night. I am just heading out in grey duck weather to give everyone breakfast. Wendy2 -
Hi Ladies
Good weigh in today. I have managed to gain 4 lbs since my low. I’m still 3 lbs below my maintenance range, but back up to a normal BMI range. I’m happy!
Welcome to all the new ladies. Trucker - you joined us just by posting.
Barbie - I hope the MRI went well.

I know I’ve mentioned it before, but since the topic has come up again I will say I’m very fortunate, my hub will eat whatever I want to make. He just gets a bigger portion than me (most of the time). If I make cauliflower fried rice, I keep half. I love it!!
