Haven't been checking in. Too much fun running around in Ireland.
Is tomorrow the last day of the month already? Jeez. Guess that means I'll be falling a few kms short of my goal this month, as we're getting a pretty early start and I don't think I'll have time for 13km.
Good luck to everyone racing this weekend, sure wish I could join you.
Upcoming races:
20181014 Beijing Women's Half Marathon (maybe)
20181027 Mogan Ultra 30k
20181118 Shanghai Marathon (maybe)
P.S. Irish eyecandy for the runner. The trail up Knocknarea
The trail towards Cliffs of Moher - was too busy taking pics of the cliffs when I got there to take pics of the trail!
Sunset over River Shannon in Limerick
Aw, when you said eyecandy I was hoping for some redheads! I guess the scenery is nice, too.
No running today, but got a 12-miler planned for tomorrow. I spent most of today running errands with my mom and husband, who insisted on paying for everything without talking to me about it first (I do our budgets). Not super happy about that, but so it goes. When we finally got home I took a quick nap then ran by the art supply store to pick up stuff for journaling. I know all you really need is a pen and paper, both of which I have, but nicer pens and colorful masking tape is fun too!
Will be thinking of all you folks racing tomorrow - have fun and stay healthy!5 -
Hey all. Well I did it! 14k in 1:18:45!!! I was hoping to beat 1:20:00 based on yesterday's 7k run.
This was a fun run organised by the local Rotary club along a cycle trail - which was a railway in the early 1900s. We got a bus to the start, and was able to leave coats and bags with the organisers, fortunately cause it was chilly. I did a few lengths of the road to warm up, and waited. They let the half marathon people go first, followed by the 14k walkers (seriously??) then the 14k runners. The first few kms were relatively flat, so I was really good at sticking to around 5:55 min/km. I ignored the pack, and past quite a few walkers in the first couple of kms. Then it started climbing. It felt like the climb was from the 4km mark, but Garmin tells me it started at 7... Either way it steadily climbed for 70m till the 9.5k mark, when we got to go through an old tunnel! My plan had been to start increasing my pace after 4-5 k but I found it better to hold off for a bit. After the tunnel, it was a nice gentle down hill for 3k. I was definitely able to pick up my pace then. I had a winegum at 10ks and really noticed the difference. About a minute after eating it, I felt like I had a second wind! So ill definitely be taking winegum on longer runs.
The final km was flat, the home stretch. By now im passing lots of walkers who were from the 9k group, calling out "im on your left". That either met with people moving to the right (yay, perfect), people looking to see who is calling out, realise its a runner, then moving to the right (ok. Not perfect but they moved), or one lady who literally said "whats going on, ill just stop" and stood still on the trail with her hands in the air. Nearly twisted my ankle running off the path to avoid her.
So because its just a fun run, no bling, and I was one of the few that didn't get a spot prize. But I was doing it for the experience and it was worth that!
I'm attaching the elevation, that is not how it felt bahaha.

We couldn't have had a more perfect day for the event today - clear, cool and still. Devonport is a beautiful suburb - both nature-wise (right on the water looking back across the harbour to the city) and housing-wise (read, historic, affluent and pretty). It's a lovely place to run.
Aside from having to get up at stupid o'clock because of the change to daylight saving, the day was flawless. I ran well. I was aiming for a 5:10 average pace but only managed 5:14 thanks to a few seriously gnarly hills. There wasn't a lot of flat for me to pick up speed. Consequently, I was a bit disappointed, not only in my time, but the fact that the last kilometre I was flying (4:44 pace) and feeling great and more than able to continue like that for a few more kilometres. I guess this bodes well for the Auckland Half next month. That race starts in Devonport so has a rather hilly first half. Once you cross the Harbour Bridge (basically another long hill) it gets flat and fast for the final 5k.
My final time was 1:18:43 (run-time twins @avidkeo) however, my watch did measure the course slightly short.
I managed 33rd place in a field of 218, and was 13th woman, so that was pleasing. Unfortunately, my age group was overrepresented by speedsters so I was 6th (my planned finishing time would have only just had me in 5th!).
All in all a great day out.
Me on the left with my running buddies.

Did some run-walk intervals today!
This actually felt a bit too conservative so I think on Tuesday I'm going to do 90 second runs with 90 second walks, and maybe add 1-2 more intervals.

Well done! I do love the North shore, it is the best part of Auckland. Lol love the time twins, but you did a whole extra km in the same time, well done. Sounds like you are all set for next month then. Very cool!
Did you get those shoes?2 -

Yes! I've been meaning to photograph them but haven't had a chance to get them out of the box yet!6 -
Posting late 12.02 miles run with avg spd 13min/mile with .86 cool down walk. Woke up 3 hours late as fell asleep in chair d/t carb coma then finally made it to cpap and bed at 0400. 0840ish start heat and humidity on the rise and the route didn't have a lot of shade cover. Made it into town and paused for quick hydration stop at Subway(they take Samsung pay and me with no wallet) then headed back toward the house. The last part of mile 12 was all uphill(isn't that the way it usually works out). Survived and thinking I definitely need to do it earlier in the day next time as I was drenched(even my drifit shorts). Oh well.
Awesome pics everyone and thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone's race reports. Will check out the audio files Monday.
That is it for my September mileage 75.2/60.5. See e1 in October.4 -
@HonuNui - Absolutely love the picture of the turtle! It was the last thing I looked at last night before I went to bed and it just made me smile!
@orphia - great job! Love the scenery!
@skippygirlsmom - hope your knees are feeling so much better!
@eleanorhawkins - nice job on the 5k! amazing how a little eye candy can help you run faster
@marisap2010 and @MobyCarp - love the bling/swag for the race! Awesome! @marisap2010 - I have tried to see Dean Karnazes at the SF Marathon expo for 4 years and haven't seen him yet. Have an awesome time and PRs at the race!
@katharmonic - What a beautiful place for some R&R! Enjoy!
@BruinsGal_91 - Congratulations - great race and an AG place!
@RunnerGrl1982 - Yay on hitting double digits and welcome to the 100 mile club!
@RunsOnEspresso - we are expecting to get our first rain of the season this next week from Rosa too. I hope so! The Pride run looks great - love the medal too. Also I have and UA shirt that would be perfect for it (United We Stand)!
@juliet3455 - I hope your work schedule settles down soon! Honestly you just need to retire so you can just focus on running!
@noblsheep - Love the Irish running eye candy! I really need to get over there and visit my ancestral home!
@amymoreorless - I have heard of that as being an issue with long distance runners in general. So glad you went to urgent care right away! I hope you are feeling better. Take care of yourself!! Ibuprofen and running is a really bad combination - both are hard on your kidneys!
@avidkeo and @ContraryMaryMary - Congratulations on your races! @avidkeo a couple of questions... what exactly is winegum? and what is a spot prize?
@sarathes - Yay! So happy to see you running again! Will you still be working with the running coach/trainer?
Today was a long run day that was almost not a long run...Hips were so stiff and tight until around mile 4-4.5 despite stopping to stretch. I was ready to call it a day - finish it up to 5 on the dirt trail and head home. Not sure if it was the change in surface or what but that was when it finally felt like I could run with a normal, non-gimpy gait. Was treated with views of a soaring Cooper's hawk and an Osprey. Also I wore a long sleeve shirt today as opposed to sunscreen on my arms and was soaked, every inch of it about midway through the run. Had a strange experience with my Apple Watch - it locked and wouldn't release until I turned the crown to expel water! I was staring at it trying to figure out what I needed to do w/o my glasses too. The only thing I can think is it got too wet from my shirt sleeve but I have swum in it an never seen that message - very strange!
That puts me at goal, just squeaked by.
I had some issues earlier in the week so I missed a couple of runs and that put me needing a bit over 8 today. We got a bad diagnosis for Hobbes the Vizsla, so I didn't run on Wednesday and Thursdayand spent the time researching on the PC. I ran a short route with him on Friday until he was clearly too tired and today he wouldn't even go with me for part of the run or for a walk. So strange to run a long/training run without him

@amymoreorless Did you slip it into that horrifying tale of kidney problems that it's your birthday? HAPPY BIRTHDAY! get better soon.
Am I misremembering or didn't you have plumbing problems on the day of your long run? Did that have anything to do with your failure to hydrate?3 -
@shanaber oh lol wine gums are a type of sweet/lolly. Small jelly like lollies, like the inside of jelly beans without the hard shell. These ones are actually made with wine.
A spot prize is a give away. Pretty common in NZ. They have a range of prizes and they call out bib numbers. If you there for the giveaway you win a prize. Can be anything from a box of chocolates, bottle of wine or other small thing like socks, right through to big prizes, last year someone won an air conditioning unit (we call them heatpumps). That way prizes aren't just for the people who win, but everyone who participates has a chance to get one. They are usually donated by local businesses.
Boy that was a long explanation6 -
Thank you lovely runners!

@ContraryMaryMary Awesome event! Hey, you're confusing me! You use miles and feet?
God no. It’s a screenshot from the event website, no idea why it’s in imperial. I had to google to check that 9.324 miles was actually 15k, since I ran the route marked and measured 14.88km. It is (a few inches over actually).3 -

LOL, why would they do that?!!! How odd!
Today I was trying to find an iPhone app that would let you convert times/distances and paces easily. Not much luck yet. Looking for a runner's calculator that does all the maths we need to do.2 -
Managed to get a look at the official lists from my race the other night, official time of 30:42 over 5,091m. No times were ever published for the race I ran in August (which according to my watch was almost 6k anyway), but back in May my daughter and I ran/walked a 4k in 31 minutes so I'm pretty happy with my time :-)
Legs were a little tired this morning still, but got my scheduled 7.5 kilometres done without too much trouble. Rather daunted by the thought that in 10 weeks time I'll be doing almost 3 times that distance :-O
Anyway, goal for the month met and passed. Success!

September goal: 75km. September total: 87.5km.6 -
@Avidkeo Great job! 14k seems such an odd (even?) choice for a race length though!
@ContraryMaryMary too bad about the speedsters, but looks like a great place to run at least! Well done!
@Avidkeo Spot prize sounds like they call door prizes here.
@Orphia Just say "Hey Siri, how many kilometers is 10 miles?" and she will tell you. You can also just type "convert 10 miles to km" in Safari and it will tell you.4 -

I have found sometimes just stopping for a moment helps change everything, especially if I stretch in that stop. I am not a fan of cold static stretches (like they made us do in school) but what you have described has helped me at times at least.

Wrapped up September running with a last run in Lake Placid this morning. My legs really felt tired from yesterday's hike (which was a bit more than I bargained for, but beautiful). Running seemed to help rather than hurt though. Funny enough I ran into 2 people I know on this run. One was a co-worker and we didn't know we each had planned to be here this weekend, even though we talked just a day before I think. The other was a former student of mine who I actually ran into last night at the restaurant/bar! Such a small world. I'm headed back home in a little while but am already trying to figure out my next trip here. I just love it and it is good for my soul.
This was the week of elevation! From hill repeats for my speedwork, to a hillier than usual long run, the added hills on my morning runs here, and my hike. No wonder my hamstrings are a little sore. I will have to ask my personal trainer for mercy tomorrow as Mondays are usually leg day.
This was my highest mileage month by 21 miles, and the most steps in a month ever my spreadsheet tells me. I will see you all over in the October thread - not sure if I'll set a mileage goal but obviously the big goal for October is to run a full marathon! 4 weeks from today! I'll be checking back here to see how everyone finishes up September and for race reports.
Oh, a picture from yesterday's hike

@shanaber So sorry to read about Hobbes the Vizsla. Hugs!0

Thanks @Elise4270 for setting up October! Remember whoever sets up the month gets to be first to set their goal for what its worth
@katharmonic - That area looks just lovely!
Thanks for the hugs @RunRachelleRun! We are hanging in there.
Rest day for me today but I am heading over to the October Challenge to see what you all are signing up for and get my goal down too.4 -

Well, September obviously didn't go as planned but at least I am running again!
Ha, thanks @Elise4270!
@RunRachelleRun Yes, I'll still be working with my coach but for the next few weeks my running schedule will be dictated by the limits my physiotherapist put on me.
I have been reading and keeping up but mostly clicking the likes or the hugs instead of commenting. See you all in the October challenge!3
