THANK YOU for all the birthday wishes!
Shout out to all the September babies!I have a question for the group - when you go on vacation or a business trip do you get excited about running in a new place and spend time plotting out where you might be able to run?
We are going on a road trip next week and I spent several hours last night (instead of going to bed) looking at Google Maps and running sites for route/trail recommendations. Then I plotted a route in each location where we will be staying and saved them
I do some of that but also throw the question out in this group as well. We have such a variety of runners in different places that even if someone hasn't been where you're going they know someone who has and can point you in the direction of a good route/trail or two.
Reat day for me today after run yesterday, 8 and a half hours on the lake and the my usual Saturday night bowling. Looking forward to race reports from all those running today.4 -
9/1 0
9/2 4
4 of 70 miles
@juliet3455 thank you. I told Skip what you said and she felt better. One of the things that might have thrown her too was the course, it was grass about 2” high but really thick and spongey. She said it felt funny under her feet. The senior girl on her team never wears spikes so Skip got a pair of flats yesterday to try. She had a long talk at FF with a gal who ran track professionally. Her name will come to me eventually but she ran for New Balance. She write down Skip’s name and told her she was going to follow her. Talk about making a kids self esteem go up!
Uneventful run except for some *kitten* guy who kept bothering me. Skip did her long run and did my short. My knee was okay twinged with ever step but I didn’t want to cry so it’s good lol

@amymoreorless Sorry for your loss. Hold onto the memories.
Did a ton of gardening yesterday cleaning out flower beds, removing dead shrubs etc = lots of time kneeling.
My calf's are super tight today so rather than a run I just went for a 3 km walk to see if the one trail/route was still open. The province is replacing the major bridge over the river so a lot of trails along the riverbank have been temporarily lost due to construction zones - heavy equipment etc. The trail was still open but has been damaged in quite a few places and the gravel/rock has been covered with a layer of slimy clay. Probably won't be open during the winter as it will be impossible to do snow removal.1 -
@amymoreorless I'm sorry for the loss of your grandmother.
@Avidkeo I bought a mostly mesh shirt to go over my bra, and it's working for me. Due to my loose skin and stretch marks I would rather my belly not be visible, and this hides it enough while letting a breeze through.
@skippygirlsmom good to hear your knee is doing better! That looked really painful.2 -
@juliet3455 My next MEC trail race is around and past Fort Edmonton park so that's where I was yesterday . Oct 7 if you happen to be in town... pretty sure I will do the medium distance rather than the long.
Pretty sure I ran all the trails on the course but in the wrong order LOL.
@shanaber I definitely do that! On vacation I popped in to the local bike shop to find out about local trails for running. Now I'm using the Trail forks biking app to find local trails closer to home.7 -

When I go on vacation, it IS to run someplace else. Featured places this year are/have been Boston, Virginia Beach, Ann Arbor MI, Corning NY, Syracuse NY. I'm going to pass on potential trips to Tulsa OK and Spokane WA.

The information for the HM says the provide water and loaded drinks at the drink stations. I've heard of sports drinks being referred to as "loaded" and there is a brand here called loaded. I assume the drinks will be loaded brand? I want to make sure cause I want to get some for my long runs to test it out.
Second, bigger busted ladies - I currently wear a sports bra with a rank top over, but as it gets hotter I hate having anything around my waist. I could just run in the bra, but I know that's frowned on (not that i care). Does anyone run with a crop or something over the top of their sports bra? I'm worried about feeling too constricted. I've got 11 weeks and want to train as I intend on running the Half.
Oh and PS. I've been toying with the idea of doing a whole marathon. Crazy and nuts right?
So Loaded Drinks is probably:
Loaded Drinks Limited
https://loadeddrinks.com
I have never heard of them but they appear to be an NZ brand so that is not a surprise. Look like just another sports drink and that would make sense.
Also, 11 weeks would be tight to train for a running full marathon. With dedication, it could be done, but you need to decide that NOW, not 6 weeks from now.
As for the top... I am not really equipped to answer that one.
Oh no, I didn't mean in 11 weeks "shudder", I do a challenge every year. This year was run often, train for and complete a HM at the end of the year. I'm thinking of a challenge for next year.dreamer12151 wrote: »So a couple of questions.

Why would just a sports bra be frowned upon? I think you should wear whatever you feel comfortable in.
+1!! Definitely!!!! Look up #SportsBraSquad, Kelly Roberts, Instagram has "I have a runner's body" as well. There are times I don't run in a shirt either, and I DEFINITELY don't look like Des Linden or Gwen Jorgensen!
OP, if you don't care, then don't care. Get a pretty sports bra and run away!! lol

Yeah have heard of her and she's brilliant. There are times at the moment when I do go in just a bra and I don't care - mostly. Maybe it's not frowned on, I just feel self conscious. I never ever wore a bikini till this year because I was self conscious of my tummy. I'm learning to get over it because comfort over looks. It's so much more comfortable that a shirt and damn it if any one were to comment, I just ran 10k. the day you run 10k you can comment. Thought @ContraryMaryMary had an excellent point about sunburn. Its particularly harsh in NZ, and especially where I live. A T is so much easier than trying to apply sunblock and missing spots4 -
@amymoreorless I'm so sorry about your grandmother.0

So schedule for today was a 6.5k run, but I did my 10k yesterday so because of wanting to avoid injury I took a rest instead. I'm really conscious of my ankle now. My calves feel really tight. So will be stretching again rolling all day and will pick up regular program tomorrow - 8km.3

September Running Totals (miles)
9/1 – rest day
9/2 – 15.80 warmup + Oak Tree Half
September running total to date – 15.80
Nominal September mileage goal: 165 miles
Real Goals: Run Oak Tree well, winning my age group and finishing healthy. Build base/train toward Wineglass, running PG XC #1 so as not to be injured, and running the USATF Masters XC Championship so as not to be injured. Run Wineglass easy, finishing healthy for a good recovery in October.
Today's notes – I took a rest day yesterday because the race today was important to me. This morning, my body responded with a resounding THANK YOU! Several little aches vanished, and there was spring in my step.
The bad news was the weather. Gun time forecast was for 70º F with showers, 30% chance of rain. Still 30% chance an hour later, and 0% chance the hour after that. Temperature when I left my house was 70º and dew point was 68º. Dew point was supposed to in the low 60s in Geneseo. Well . . .
I drove through some very pretty early morning sunshine to get there. Tried to take an early picture of the finish line illustrating the lack of clouds, but mostly it shows shade:
Set out for my warmup. Oak Tree is sponsored by the Genesee Valley Conservancy, so I paused to take a picture of a couple of the race's namesakes that are being conserved:
I had wanted a 2 mile warmup, but went for a little longer so I could get to the top of the Nations Road hill and take a picture looking down:
It's more impressive looking up from the bottom, but I wasn't about to run down that hill for a picture and run back up on my warmup. Finished the warmup dripping with sweat. Yes, warm and humid. Weather similar to what I had for Shoreline, where I flamed out after 8 or 9 miles. The game will be manage the race better than I did at Shoreline.
The Oak Tree course has about 3 miles on asphalt that don't have much elevation change, then it turns onto a gravel road. There's a short climb, then we go down the Nations Road hill. Run some gravel road at the bottom, come back up a rolling hill pattern on Roots Tavern Road, another mile of asphalt on the highway, then downhill on gravel for Huston Road, turn onto Nations Road, run some minor rolling waves, and then that rather challenging hill. At the top of the hill, we're back on asphalt at about 11.8 miles, with an easy finish back to the high school and around the track.
For those keeping score, there's about 8 miles of gravel road, mostly going up or down, and about 5 miles of asphalt with some inclines and declines but nothing steep.
So I start out, and think to pace behind Joe, who managed Shoreline much better than I did. Within the first mile, I see I'm running a 6:30 pace and Joe is pulling away. I let him go. Get to the top of Nations Road with the mantra of don't work all that hard, save some energy. And every single aid station, take a cup of water and pour it over my head. Didn't feel like I needed it at 2 miles, it was general principle. At 5K, I needed it a little. Past 4 miles, I started dousing my head with 2 cups of water per aid station.
Two years ago when I ran this course, we had perfect running weather. At that time, there was relatively fresh gravel, and part of the strategy was to run for good footing, don't try for good tangents. Today, the gravel was more beaten down by traffic and it was possible to run good tangents . . . but by the time I got onto Roots Tavern Road, I decided the strategy on east-west roads had to be stay on the south side and run in as much shade as possible.
At 6.5 miles, I passed Joe. He had slowed to a walk at that point. Told him, "Tough day to run a half," and kept going. It was like Shoreline in reverse, with Joe flaming out instead of me.
Around 8 miles, I turned from the highway to Huston Road and didn't see anyone ahead of me. I had passed a few runners a mile back or so, and the serious, well-conditioned runners were far ahead of me. That's okay; by the time I was 4 miles in, I knew I wasn't trying to beat anyone. I was running to survive the course. Told myself, need to rest for 2.5 miles before that hill.
At 8.3 miles, a rural resident had set up a sprinkler to spray the side of the road. Screw tangents, bless that homeowner!
From there to the bottom of the hill I was mostly running in space, occasionally passing someone who took the early start. Told myself to channel Newton, and don't challenge the hill. That got me maybe halfway up, and I was compelled to take a walking break. A photographer took my picture right where the course was defeating me. (Haven't seen the shot online yet.) So I ran some more. Had to take another walk break. Got my HR down, ran the rest of the hill to cheers from the volunteers at the aid station at the top of the hill. More water on the head, a sip of Gatorade, and run the last of the gravel.
The mile or so of asphalt was wonderful recovery. Got my wind back, got to the high school, got onto the track, went to finish with a 200m stride, and my right calf cramped up. Backed off, and finished at a lesser pace. Didn't matter. I was 5 minutes behind the next earlier finisher, and a minute ahead of the next later finisher.
Official time was 1:36:41, 16th of 248 overall and 1st of 6 in the M 60-64 age group. I was less than 2 minutes ahead of the 2nd guy in my age group, so I really did have to run this race to win the age group. Not my fastest half, but a really good result for a tough course in humid weather. I'm happy with how I managed the race. I ran it well, won my age group, and finished healthy. So I've achieved the first of my September goals.

@amymoreorless So sorry for your loss. Nice that you ran in her memory.
@skippygirlsmom great to hear Skip doing so well in her first college race. Proud of her. And you for getting back out there after that horrible fall and torn up knees.1 -
We walked a very pokey paced mile last night - needed to wear out the tiny human before bed. My hips were hurting just from that so I made sure to stretch and do some foam rolling.
Run today along the Clarksville trail, starting from a different parking lot this time. I had to restart my watch and mapmyrun about halfway through when I realized the gps wasn’t quite right - it started me on a main road and then zoomed me to the trail - no way did I cover .8 miles in less than 5 minutes.
I actually felt really good during this run. I felt like I was running, not just trudging along. It was 90+ degrees F outside, so I’m not sure what finally clicked for me - it certainly wasn’t a break in the weather. I also had butterflies landing on me as I ran, so that was amazing.
I got lapped by my sister, then we walked together to meet my mom, husband, and tiny human. My sister released the tiny human from the stroller and they ran together, stopping to see every leaf on the trail, crunch and stomp on the leaves, point out each stick and branch...it makes my heart happy to see them share adventures. I also want to encourage my son to stay active (he’s almost 2) - he loves to run and I don’t want him to fall into couch potato habits early (he does love Elmo).
September - 2/25 (due to watch/app issues I’m not sure how far I ran and how much I walked, so I’m rounding down). I also ran my first sub-16 minute mile outside!

Okay, in for September. I've a 10K on 20th October and am training for that. I started strongly with a 5K race yesterday = I was very slow, but I got round. I'm gonna try for 45 miles this month. That's 3 x 3 miles a week, plus ramping up the distance in order to get that 10K distance.

I have a question for the group - when you go on vacation or a business trip do you get excited about running in a new place and spend time plotting out where you might be able to run?
Yes. Absolutely. I spend hours plotting new runs, but invariably chicken out of anything too ambitious as I have the world's worst sense of direction and run a serious risk of getting totally lost in a strange city. Consequently favour well defined loops (intersections are where things go wrong) or out and back.4 -

I don't even run in singlets because of sunburn. You're right, the half starts early and you should be done by the time it gets super burny, but then there's all the loitering about afterwards which is lethal for sunburn - I swear, you finish at 9:30, you grab a drink and a banana, next minute, it's 11am and you're fried. Also, you'll want to train in what you're going to race in, which may be at times a bit later than the event.3 -
Congratulations on your great overall finish and winning your age group at Oak Tree, @MobyCarp. Well done in these hot and humid conditions. Impressive! Glad you are doing so well and feeling healthy.
I'm trying to inspire a group roadtrip to Rochester in the next few weeks for a long run somewhere new (getting so bored of the same old trails). The Genesee Riverway Trail looks like a good option. Some of us will need up to 20 miles or so, some less. Then brunch or lunch. If you have any recommendations or suggestions on the trail let me know! I also just saw that the Rochester Half/Marathon is coming up so that might be a possibility, though not sure the timing will work.2 -
@amymoreorless Sorry for your loss.
@shanaber I'm completely the opposite. I have a hard time getting out and even walking when I am on vacation. Of course, part of that is because I usually go to FL and have the grandkids to entertain, which I don't get to see nearly often enough. I go with good intentions, but wind up doing nothing.2 -

The Rochester Half isn't as challenging a course as Oak Tree, but it does have some noticeable ups and downs. You start on top of the Niagara escarpment, run down almost to the level of Lake Ontario, run back up, and go down halfway and back up when you cross the Genesee River at Seneca Park. Get that much done, and you only have a 5K with rolling hills left . . . including a short, steep hill at mile 11. That hill at mile 11 can break the spirits of someone who doesn't know it's coming; but it's the last steep up left on the course. The Rochester Full Marathon does the loop twice, with an added down and back up loop in the cemetery. The Rochester Marathon is geographically more challenging than Boston, though it will be logistically easier. September 23 for the Rochester Half & Marathon. I'll likely be running cross country in Buffalo that day.
The 10 mile loop of the Rochester Half course is a pretty route for a long run, and it isn't nearly as challenging for a long slow run as it is for a race. There's a couple of turns that might be hard to find without course markings, road marshals, or a local runner who has been over the route; but I've run it on training runs and enjoyed it.
There is a break in the Genesee Riverway Trail south of the Rochester Marathon course, where you have to get past some unattractive city streets to get to the more southerly part of the trail that is runnable. The more southerly section is much flatter than the Rochester Marathon route. It's pretty, you can run on both sides of the river, and there's usually some segments affected by construction. I could run you around a bunch of asphalt and crushed stone trails based out of Genesee Valley Park, including the Riverway Trail, the Lehigh Valley Trail, the Greenway Trail, and a piece of the Erie Canal Trail; but I don't know what I'd recommend for someone unfamiliar with the area who has no local runners to run with and a group of people who have diverse mileage needs. Maybe just look at the Strava heat maps and see what's popular.2 -
September goal: 85 miles
9/2: 7 miles

Seven miles today. It was a great run to start September. It is still hot, but it will start getting cooler soon enough. Tomorrow is a holiday so I am looking forward to a day off.

Today I got to run 9.01 miles, a PR for longest single run! I also ran part of mile 2 of the Twin Cities Marathon course, but that was on accident around mile 8 of my run, and I walked a lot of it because it’s mostly a big stupid hill. I got some great pictures though!
To start at the beginning, I got off to a late start, but I still had over an hour before sunset when I left the house, so I figured I’d be okay. First mistake. I’d decided to try out my new water belt, but left the vest at home as it’s a little big and I figured better to try it on a shorter run. I did wear a couple of reflective armbands, which were fine. At first, wearing the belt on my long run seemed like a mistake, but that turned out okay in the end.
Running with the water belt was weird. Seeing as how I, like many but not all women, have a reasonably distinct waist, hips, and butt, trying to find a good location for even a wide piece of elastic in that general region was something of a struggle. I tried dumping half my water, but then the sloshing was bugging me. The first two miles were really stop and go until I finally managed to winch the straps as tight as they went and wear it so low I was sure it would fall off. At least then I wasn't whacking it with my arms.
I’d also brought my phone, which isn’t exactly light, and swapped it around a few times before ending up in exactly the configuration I’d started in. I got some nice photos, though! Miles 3 through 5 or so were actually extremely pleasant. After the first two miles I was on a path I hadn’t run before, and now I can say I’ve run around six of the 10,000 lakes!
Coming around the lake to head home it was really starting to get dark, and the path I’d planned on was dark and steep and didn’t have a sidewalk, so I looped back the way I’d came. Then I made my second mistake (maybe?). I knew the route home was going to be kind of dark and isolated, and I was tired, so I asked my phone for the shortest route home.
Unfortunately, that route skipped all the rich people neighborhoods I usually run in and went straight down an access road along a freeway for a mile or so. Ug. I could see downtown for most of the run so I wasn’t exactly lost, but I wasn’t really happy with all that sidewalk running in the dark, either.
Eventually this dumped me out in the sculpture garden, which is around mile two of the marathon, but not a section I’d planned on running because it’s mostly a big freaking hill. And also all sidewalks and too many people who get really confused by someone gasping “on your left”. Oh well. The sculpture garden is lovely at night, and the home stretch is the home stretch, no matter how you cut it.
Looping back to the water belt, I was super glad I had it and did not give an eff about any sloshing by the time I was trudging up that last hill.
PHOTOS!
The turnoff for my usual lake.
This lake was a repeat, but still super pretty.
A new lake! So many lakes! What's with all the lakes, Minnesota? I don't know if this was an especially pretty lake or if I just appreciated it more because it was new to me, but I loved the walkway.
Sunsets are also pretty! Unfortunately, I was still 3-4 miles from home at this point.
I didn't get any pictures of the scary freeway access road. But downtown is definitely pretty at night! Pretty, pretty, pretty.

@mobycarp - congratulations on your HM! Seems like a race well run and another AG 1st! Whoot! Whoot!
@ContraryMaryMary - that race looks like so much fun!
@MegaMooseEsq - beautiful pictures!
I had a great run today!
The weather was actually lovely. It stayed cool until well after lunch, overcast, mid to low 70s with a bit of a breeze. At one point I was so sweaty and the breeze, dare I say it, made me cold! Had planned for a regular 4-5 miles, especially since I was late heading out, and ended up with a long run. I would have gone longer but I got hungry and had no fuel with me. I followed up with my regular hip and glute routine. Tomorrow will be a short easy run and BBQ burgers for dinner!
Haven't set up a new ticker but will take care of it tomorrow. Tonight I am tired and need to sleep!
