I get my hair cut at Great Clips. I found a stylist there that I like and I call ahead to make sure she is there before I check in online. Haircuts for seniors are $13.00 and a little higher for younger people. Jake gets his hair cut by the same stylist.
I have gone out of my way to discard people who just suck the life out of me. There are two exceptions and both are quite elderly and I see my calls to them as an act of loving kindness. My time and energy are important to me and I use them as carefully as I can.6 -

Funny - we all seem to have them in our lives - I always called them "emotional vampires," because they will suck the life right out of you. I've got one that I'm working with now that brings out every maternal instinct I have, but after being sucked in to the point where you care about her, you realize that's all that's happening--you're feeding her emotions, and it becomes... exhausting. At a time when I'm holding onto every spare scrap of energy, I'm having to make that decision that I can't give to her anymore. My "tribe" gives me energy, freely, and I hope that I give it back. Interesting dynamics.
This group in this thread gives so much, and I often feel I don't give as much as I get. I hope to turn that around soon, and have energy to give back. Just trying to stumble through October and get my life back.
Do love y'all,

Hi Gals,
Grr – I forgot to post and then deleted what I had written….
Rye - Sinkhole people !!! OMG that is a great label! My mother is one, I sometimes want to pull my hair out and other times play games with it, for a while I would see how long a phone conversation would go with me just saying umm… After I said Hello, 1 hour 10 min was the longest, and at the end she said good bye and hung up, never even waited for me to say good bye too…
Michele – haircuts --- so interesting how different prices are in different parts of the country… here in the land of high prices I found a hairdresser that does a cut for $30 which is super cheap – most friends are paying $80-90 the closest beauty school is 40+ min in crazy traffic – and that’s not worth it for me – and they are $25….
Today was a long work day both embroidery machines going for about 11 hours, but some real progress made. Tomorrow afternoon I am going to visit a garden, that an acquaintance has remodeled from a lawn with shrubs around the edges to a retreat inside an urban “farm” She is set up to provide most of the fruit and veggies her family of 3 need all year around. I am looking forward to seeing it. But it is an hour drive each way and it’s a pretty big gathering of friends and family – it will be a good break from all the work.
Good thoughts to all parts of the world struggling with weather issues! From Typhoons to hurricanes to fire – its been a dozie!
Smiles

Yet another assignment done.
One more weekly assignment, then 3 larger assignments to go!
And I'm about 3/4 done one of the 3 larger assignments.
I have decided to take the summer off from university. I'll still be working full-time, but no university will free up my evenings a bit.
I'm getting tired.
It might also give me time to deal with a number of this like ... getting a little bit of extra rest. And a pile of household projects. And getting outside more. And getting back into shape again. And dealing with a few little medical issues like whatever is going on with my teeth/jaw. And ...
Oh hey ... maybe I might even be able to play around with a little bit of photography again! It's been a while.

Heather: (((HUGS))) to you and your DH. I hope you find many ways to see your wonderful grandchildren and continue your travels, whether you move or stay in your current home. :flowerforyou:
Lanette: I had motion sickness issues for years, but they seem to have gone away. Yay!!!!! As a child I had a tough time any time we were in the car because both parents were chain smokers and windows tended to be rolled up. I’m still more than a little grumpy about those miserable rides in my long ago past. :grumble:
Rita: I agree with Ryenday—what a beautiful sunset. You’ve found a beautiful place to enjoy.
Allie: Having blood drawn is no picnic, but it seems like a good idea for you. I hope you will find good news from a new blood draw.
We’ve been looking at TV providers. I like the one we have had for several years although it is pricey. I get to see all the shows I love, and I can fast forward any time to zip though commercials. The other provider is less money for the basic plan, but if I want the shows I love I have to pay extra for them. I’m staying with our current provider for now because I have the chance to see all the wonderful animal shows I love. If you have insights that would help I’d love to hear them.

Just doing a quick read before bed (which I should have been in at least 30 min ago!), but had to comment!
Lisa, you give a lot here, or at least I get a lot out of your insights on life. Hang in there, we're all rooting for ya!
That's all I have time for right now. Hugs to those needing them, congrats to those celebrating and welcome to the newbies!

Well fiddlesticks! That’s twice now I’ve carefully copied my message to paste to the next page and then copied something else before going to this page. Now it’s all lost.
All if you lovely ladies from page 35 on - I’m sorry! I’m really not a sinkhole, and Penny, your raspberries look so lush and fragrant that I’m “jonesing” for them.
Barbie - I know u had a lot more to say to you, but it’s 11:30pm, and I’m fine. Oh! Great Clios is truly great. They do my hair too!
Lisa in AR - you hit the nail in the head. Whether we’re Es or Is on this forum, must seem to listen and send care when they can. That’s great!
Kyla - Getting home helps make up for the special time being over. Bet your fur babies were over the moon to have you back!
Kin from N California - Yoyr friend’s garden retreat sounds lovely. The fellow who volunteers here at our park to do the gardens often mixes veggies and fruits with the blooms. Sounds like it would be worth the drive to see something that can supply a family yet still be ornamental!
Machka in Oz . Sounds like a much-needed break to me. Take care if yourself. We can sabotage ourselves so easily by trying to take care of everything BUT ourselves.
hugs to those who need or want them.

We do cover some interesting topics here, love reading about different places and people.
HEATHER I caught the repeat of Trust Me I'm a Doctor, really interesting, but then he is always good. Sorry about your protracted house buying, totally agree about living in limbo.
My Spanish cough seems to be easing but DH has a rash over back and arms, it developed the day we arrived home. It defo looks like an allergic reaction. The only thing we can put it down to is a nasal spray he got from pharmacy for congestion as he'd had cold and chest infection. Looked it up but no mention of allergic reaction but who knows. Anyway I've given him antihistamine which has stopped the itching.
Welcome to all newbies, I am also one of the oldies being 73, workout with KB and do cardio I know it's a cliché but if I can do it you can. Keep coming back here for encouragement and support.
Came back from holiday to hear my neighbour of 49 years who is in her early eighties has lung cancer and hasn't too long to live. My other friend, I have talked about her before, she did eventually get help to clean the house and has someone come each week for a few hours. She has to pay for this service even though it's arranged through NHS. But she still doesn't go out and consequently has lost confidence and is getting weaker. Her son rang to tell me she is in hospital something about an infection. He has his own mental health problems so getting info is difficult, will try tomorrow to find out more.
Happy Sunday

I'm an oldie too. 69 in a couple of weeks! I was 62 when I started on my new and improved lifestyle. It took me 18 months to lose 57 lbs. I've kept it off for nearly five years.
This morning I REALLY didn't 'feel like' doing my usual exercise session. But I did it. :drinker: I just know that I would feel bad about myself if I didn't do it. Such a relief to have it done. Will do some cycling after lunch for my bonus calories.
Also will do my roots. I will be a natural blonde again.
I have my hair cut by my lovely hairdresser about every 10-12 weeks. I just have a 'wet cut' where they don't style it, but just dry it to damp so you don't go out dripping. Much cheaper than a styling. But still pricey. It's pointless having it styled because of all the exercise I do. The next morning it's all scrunched up and dripping with sweat.
Won't get any exercise done tomorrow as I'm catching a train to London at 8.36.
Lots of love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxx5 -

And I think I AM a sinkhole! I'm perfectly willing to blather on and pontificate but rarely ask questions. Let me just say, in my defense, that what may appear to be indifference is really a deep-seated reluctance to pry. It made me ideal as the secretary of someone who worked on the Nobel Committee. Heather may not realize it, but I was dying to know all about the trauma her husband's family was embroiled in at the time of her visit. I AM curious, but I usually figure if people want to share they will, and if they don't share it's because they don't want to.
When my husband came down from Longyearbyen on Friday, I drove into town to pick him up. By the time we got back to our island, it was dark. (This is the time of year when those of us who live in the Arctic have to re-learn driving in the dark. With the midnight sun we don't do any night driving from April to September.) Heading home from the ferry, we sighted a hare hopping along the road in our headlights. It was a young and foolish hare, and didn't have the sense to jump off the road immediately. But we slowed down and it eventually got out of our way. Just a couple kilometers farther on, we saw something else hare-sized and pale on the roadbed. It didn't jump, but it moved a bit. We slowed and stopped and saw that it was another young hare that hadn't managed to get out of the way of an approaching car. But even though it was stone dead, it was moving: a stoat was trying to drag it to a more secluded spot. The stoat paused and looked at us momentarily (two little green eyes glowing in the headlights) then continued with her monumental struggle.
Hares are pretty big and stoats are tiny: this one was about 7-8 inches long. Imagine me trying to manhandle a dead horse! But that stoat did her best. We sat there for some time admiring that supple, determined little creature. Eventually, my husband got out (the stoat then retreated to the roadside, her eyes glowing in the dark) and tossed the hare carcass to a safer place in the grass at the roadside. It was lucky he did it just then because another car came up from behind shortly after. We assume the stoat came back and reclaimed her prize when we left.
Sorry these pictures are a bit fuzzy, and apologies if anyone is upset by the dead hare. But that stoat was so darn cute!
I'll end with a less traumatic picture of the fall colors on our mountainside.

Lisa you give plenty!
Looking forward to another pretty day here, lots of backyard weeding and prepping for the week. The secret for me is consistent habits, lather, rinse, repeat. Like Heather said: This morning I REALLY didn't 'feel like' doing my usual exercise session. But I did it. I just know that I would feel bad about myself if I didn't do it. Such a relief to have it done. Will do some cycling after lunch for my bonus calories.
You ladies are a touchstone in my life

Kayla, We watch TV a lot and like to watch at odd hours. Jake enjoys watching movies and the Seattle Mariners. We pay a small fortune for our cable TV and it frequently makes my gratitude list. It is a central piece of our recreation and we consider the cost as worth what it provides for us.
It has been drizzly here for days--wet ground, wet fence--but this morning was the first time it was actually raining. I got the dogs' jackets out of the cupboard and will put them on for the after breakfast walk.
Jake is making a new recipe in his slow cooker. He did all the prep last night and started cooking at 4 AM when he woke up. We'll have it for a midday meal. It's a pork roast cooked with cranberry sauce, chili sauce, and brown sugar.
I am 72 years old. I was 62 when I started MFP feeling discouraged about ever being able to lose weight again. Instead I found what I needed and lost over 50 pounds and have kept the weight off since then.
I don't see anyone on this thread as a "sinkhole". Some of us talk more about ourselves but never to the exclusion of having concern for the rest. Sure, some of us respond more than others, but I see us a community filled with give and take. You all add to my life through your sharing.

Phew! Good day!
Done my exercising, done my writing, (double hooray), done my bonus cycling, done my roots! None of these did I feel like doing, but I feel fabulous having done them. Like NYKAREN said, it's all about the power of habit.
Now to read an improving book. Oh, snack first.

Barbie: We had a barber in town with amazing skills that charged only $10 per cut. He moved away to be near his daughter. Now we go to the woman that he recommended and the prices are a little higher but not too high. I wish she had his skills. She’s good but he was amazing. :ohwell:
Heather: I hope your trip to London is a positive one. :flowerforyou:
Penny: The stoat is a cute little thing. Is it a member of the weasel family?
Has anyone heard from Michelle? She didn’t seem worried about the storm coming to the Carolinas but it has been hammering away at that part of the country for days now. I hope she is safe and dry.

well good morning dear friends~
How is everyone this morning... back from feeding my DFIL .. and then took Alfie down to see the dogs and Tom.... I asked him when Elena is moving in? and he said sometime in the future..she doesnt feel comfortable coming up there because of me and me taking care of the dogs and being in the area.. well girl this is where I grew up put on your big girl panties and deal with it... you want to be with Tom then you have to deal with me being there for my dogs..... he is taking her down to Florida with him in October... and was scared to ask if I would stay with the dogs... of course not they are still my dogs too, and that way he can show her around and do more stuff without having to be back for them...
I wish them every happiness and if she can live with his OCD ways and narcacistic ways good for her, it will get old pretty quick.... i put up with if for many years, it is just casual dating now.. just wait...
today I am going to do some cleaning up around here and go grocery shopping... need to get some 1/2 way decent food in the house..4 -
Rye - good luck with getting out of the jury pool early! I bet you are on the money about not getting motion sickness due to your lack of vision in one eye. Good luck on your project! I think your lack of biocular (binocular?) vision has caused you to be blessed in other ways.
Penny - that's a mighty little stoat! Neat photos! I have to remind myself to stop hogging the conversation sometimes. Not everyone finds obscure topics as fascinating as I do, lol. I need a tattoo on the palm of my hand that says "talk less listen more".
Machka - thank you for the "windyty" link. I put it on my PC last year, it must still be in development as some of the overlays weren't working for my region. And this summer every day was registering as HOT it seems (not the software's fault) and I got tired of being reminded, lol.
Good for you taking time off from school. Great opportunity for you and your husband to enjoy the summer and not be burdened with lessons in addition to your work schedule. And hoping your jaw/tooth ache gets cleared up soon. Did you say you had a doc appointment coming up?
Kylia - welcome home - I think your vacation cabin and location was just perfect, that's the type of vacation that would appeal to me. Hope your desk isn't too buried when you return to work.
Kim - that urban garden sounds fascinating. Do they have any pests such as bunnies and deer they'll need to control and if so, how do they manage that? So glad to hear your embroidery business is roaring!
Kate - sorry to hear about your neighbor and friend. You are such a dear to have been there for your friend. You are an inspiration to me.
Barbie - I love your post today. This is such a great group - there is something and someone here for everyone. New folks, hang in there and keep reading and jump in or don't. You'll get to know us. The discussion on here runs from lots of diet information (I don't mean going on a diet, I mean eating for health), exercise, sexual and physical abuse, situations in our lives that impact how we feel. I wonder how many of us would have had struggles with weight if we'd have had a group like this when we were younger?
Also, new folks, we try real hard to not discuss politics and religion. There are plenty of other places on the internet to vent about those topics.
Where's our Wendy? Busy making queen bees?
It's rainy and chilly this morning but I'm going to gear up for my walk and then my workout. Being consistent is the secret as many of you have stated. We don't have to fall in love with the movement and exercise, get it done and go on with our day. And we'll meet the rest of that day with more energy!
We are in between rain squalls right now. And we opened a gate and shooed out the twin fawns from our back yard yesterday. They really needed to move on, having eaten just about everything there was to munch on as far as landscape plants and part of the garden! So hoping I see them happy in someone else's back yard.
Have a good day ladies!

Yes, Katla, the stoat is a weasel. We've got several of that family here on the island. We've seen otters and minks and stoats and their even smaller cousin the least weasel. Female least weasels are only 4 inches long, though males can be twice that. Stoats change to their white fur jackets in the winter and call themselves ermines. I strongly suspect that the ermine in da Vinci's portrait of a Lady with an Ermine is actually a ferret because it's HUGE.
Fun fact about stoats: they sometimes kill more than they can eat, but if they do, they stash the excess and save it for later "to avoid obesity, as overweight stoats tend to be at a disadvantage when pursuing prey into their burrows". How's that for a role model, ladies?
A friend of ours tells a story about least weasels. He was doing some research on voles, trapping them to study population dynamics and whatnot. A least weasel had been caught in one of the traps. When he opened it up, the weasel shot straight into his right sleeve, ran up his arm, across his back, down his left sleeve and out at the cuff before he could even blink. They're quick little critters!
Lanette - I was wondering about Wendy, too. Her daughter was expecting, but it wasn't quite time yet, was it?
I also found it a struggle getting out to do my run today, but I gritted my teeth and got the job done. I have a 150 km target for September, which helped me get my ar§e in gear. I put in 5 km so at least I didn't lose any ground.
Best of luck with your blood work Allie. :flowerforyou:
/Penny3 -
I’ve been hoping all is well for Wendy too, she sure seems To have used her retirement to ramp up everything! That is so awesome!
Lanette, Lisa, Penny et al I think it was Karen who mentioned with true friends sometimes one DOES do all the talking. Other times they might do all the listening. That, to me is normal. So is realizing after a particularly stressful or exhilarating time that maybe lately it has been more about you, and caring to reconnect with the other person! Then you make/take time to get a touchstone on the other. I’m not sure the sinkhole is ever aware that others might feel that way. Your concern is a sign of a good person seeking healthy relationshipss, imo.
How right Lanette is: keep (or start) moving. Even thise of us who thrive on the movement and exercise have off days (See Heather’s post earlier) but the trick, the key, the important thing is to just make certain to get it done.
Hot and Muggy here. I love long days of summer but hate summer weather. Looking forward to the cool (hopefully around the corner) but not the early darkness. I’m always complicated / lol!
Have a great rest of your weekend

1948Peachy wrote: »Barbie ~ Can you share your husband's pork roast recipe? It sounds yummy!
*1 1/2 pound boneless pork tenderloin
*I can (14-16 oz) jellied cranberry sauce
*12 oz chili sauce
*2 TBS brown sugar
Put pork in the slow cooker, mix the other stuff and pour it over the pork. Cover and cook on high 4-5 hours then on low 3-4 hours. Serve over rice.
We haven't eaten it yet, but it smells delicious.
