Long run DONE! 18 big ones this morning, and in the best case scenario for weather considering the forecast. Mostly cloudy (a few times I saw the sun and was quite surprised) and around 40 degrees. The wind didn't pick up until the last couple of miles, so most of the run wasn't affected by wind chill (the wind is now whipping up all sorts of trouble outside). I'm feeling very lucky that it was dry and not too windy for 90% of my run; had I started earlier or later I'd have been running in cold drizzle or in awful wind, neither of which is particularly pleasant.
The best part of the run though was that I had company! I ran the first 8 miles solo to meet two friends of mine who are in town for the weekend. Then the three of us ran 6 miles together, after which one of them took the metro to our end point to get us spots at a brunch place while my other friend and I finished out the last 4 miles and got to go straight into our brunch spot to warm up with coffee and waffles and french toast and other glorious foods.
Also! There were no aches, pains or chafing on this run, which is always an A+ in my book. Overall this run was awesome. It merited a big ol' smiley face in my training journal

Why are most 1/2 and full marathons on Sundays? Is it a permit thing? Traffic thing? I try I scoop up all the local Saturday races when they crop up.
I was going to say it's just a tradition, but I thought a reason this tradition might exist:
Races are in the morning. If you put the race on Sunday morning, people who aren't local can more easily travel on Saturday, race Sunday morning, and return home Sunday afternoon. This gives the organizer a wider geographic range to draw runners from. Drawing people in to stay overnight helps local businesses, which helps the race organizer get local community support for disrupting traffic flow on roads. And disruption of traffic flow is less critical on Sunday than on Saturday in most places with Anglo cultural heritage.
For a shorter race, it's less important. Fewer roads are closed, and they aren't closed for as long. You can find routes where you don't need to close any major roads. If you want a wider pull, you can just have your 5K or 10K start at 10 or 11 instead of 7 or 8 on Saturday. I ran a regional XC series that started at 11 AM; this let participants all over upstate NY get to the race with reasonable morning logistics, even though most races in the series would be a substantial drive for any given participant. (They were scattered from near Ithaca to near Buffalo.) Granted, these races were on Sundays; but the same idea would work for Saturday races no longer than 10K.
Depends a lot where you live. The big local races were on Saturdays when I lived in Lynchburg, VA. Here in Pittsburgh, there are on Sundays. Which I miss like 90% of them. Saves me money I guess.
Lynchburg is right in the middle of the Bible belt though, making Sunday races a bit more taboo. I lived there for a few years, too.6 -
Okay hit the treadmill today. 20/60 km8

Something I've wondered about - when you go straight from a run to food/visit/whatever, do you bring a partial change of clothes or wet wipes or something like that? I always feel so wet and stinky after a run that I can't imagine going anywhere without a shower and a change! I get that some of this is just me, of course - I've never spent much time at post-race celebrations either so I can shower ASAP, and even around other runners I can get self-conscious when I'm all sweaty.4 -

6 miles this morning. All of you winter runners I tip my hat to you. I live in Alabama which isn't cold so. Today it was 30 with an awful wind so the wind chill was worse. I just do not have the clothing for that. I will have to get a buff and warmer pants if I am going to run in that. Oh well I just Embraced the Suck and got it done.12

4 miles today gets me to 21 but boy is it feeling a slog. For a long time I ran with a partner so we chatted away and I didn't ever want to admit to wanting to slow or walk, but on my own I am giving in to those voices that are telling it's too hard. I definately don't have the stamina I once had, but it's also motivation. How did I manage 4 - we had taken the kids to trampolining this morning which is over the other side of town, and I jogged back and the family were in the car. However slowly I knew I had to get home, and I did.9

@butterchop where in Alabama, I'm in Huntsville.
@Scott6255 thinking of you, can't wait to hear all about the marathon!4 -
@louubelle16 WTG on the PR💪🏃♀️!
@kristinegift NICE! Run then brunch sounds awesome nom nom nom.
4 easy but windy miles this morning. Staryed to head out with a light hat, long sleeve and shorts. Immediately went back inside and swapped out hats for a stocking cap and nabbed my light gloves. Perfect for the conditions.
@Scott6255 hope the marathon went well!6 -

Comments from the run:
Innocent bystander 1: "You don't miss a day, do you?"
Me: "Nope!"
Innocent bystander (preteen maybe): "Don't get hypothermia!"
Me: "I try not to!"
Comment from Friday:
Innocent Bystander: "I wish I was as dedicated as you!"
Me: *laughing down the road* No, no you do not (in my head)
Relating back to the comments in the thread about running on/in sand. On Friday, while running, Chariots of Fire started playing. It gave me a giggle fit thinking of the comments about running on/in sand.

@MegaMooseEsq If it's summer/warm and I'm with a big group, we'll just hang in our running clothes and get coffee or something. For this particular run, I wore a hydration pack and used the bladder section to put in a clean jacket, hat and gloves to put on after the run. Yeah, we were a bit stinky and I was definitely damp, but nobody seemed to mind! The worst part was the cold jog to and from the metro post-brunch when it was wind-tunneling in the city! If it was a race though, I pack a whole change of clothes either in my car or in my drop bag to change into after the event because nice dry clothes after a hard effort feel nice.9 -
Quick check-in:
Was cold (for me) mostly because of the gale force wind in the beginning, but managed to eek out a 4:09:03! Secretly hoping to break 4:00, but happy with that.
More to follow tomorrow. Thanks for all the well wishes. Goodnight33 -
Last week's 5 mile run felt effortless. Today was the complete opposite - it was miserable and a struggle the whole way. Ugh. What's weird is that, as awful as I felt, I ran almost exactly the same average pace (11:31 min/mi this week vs. 11:29 min/mi last week). I was just WAY less consistent this week, with splits of 11:05, 11:21, 11:53, 11:47, and 11:33. Obviously, I went out too fast and paid for it in the third and fourth miles. Considering this was my first long run on semi-tired legs and only my second time running this far, I'm much happier now that I've had a chance to look at the stats than I was immediately after the end of the run. I'm curious to see how tomorrow's run goes. I usually schedule a strength/stretch day before my long run and a rest day after. My schedule is all kinds of screwy this week, but it IS a learning opportunity. Hopefully next week's long run will feel better after I get back to a more normal schedule mid-week.
35.5/45.0 miles for January so far14 -

So I am not running these days but I just have to comment on the weather and will leave it there... So California - 80F yesterday and 77 with clouds today.
So Hobbes the Vizsla gets a bit anxious for activity when we don't get to run. We also haven't had agility class since before Christmas. So yesterday I took him just to 'watch' a Lure Coursing trial hoping to try a practice run but they had a packed day. So I just went ahead and entered him today. All that pent up energy was evident in his run - he took off like a shot and ran so fast! Video at the link below. Look for the white moving plastic bags coming in from the top right side with Hobbes in fast pursuit. There are sheep in the field to the right and I was concerned they would distract him or he would run to my DH but no... he just ran and ran!

@louubelle16 Sorry your brother is in the hospital. Hope he is okay and gets better soon! Congratulations on your PB. That's amazing considering everything else that is going on in your life.
@Scott6255 Congratulations! Sounds like you did awesome!!!
@shanaber Hobbes is really fast! Love to see dogs running and enjoying themselves.
This week was a crazy one for me, so I didn't get to exercise as much as I had hoped. I only managed to get in one run, which I did today...2 miles on the treadmill. Hopefully, next week will be better.

@Scott6255 - big congratulations on your marathon and great time! Can't wait to hear more about it. So happy for you.

Only about 15 inches of snow so far, not the 2 feet I was hoping for but a good effort. I enjoyed sleeping in and lazing around this morning and just watching it continue to come down. The temperatures went down during the day instead of up and the wind was pretty strong. I went out with the dog around noon and the footing was horrible as the streets hadn't really been cleared for a few hours. It wasn't much of a contest for me but I decided that it was a good day for an indoor run. When I got to the gym it was pretty quiet in there. There was a set of outside emergency doors that were clearly not well sealed as there was some snow drifted on the inside. I chose a treadmill kind of near those because it provided a nice cool breeze Not a bad treadmill day, as far as they go.
Tomorrow is supposed to be even colder and I'm already thinking I'll bail on speedwork tomorrow night if it's not cancelled. I think the coach has a -12 degree cutoff and we will be right around that. There's no way footing will be good for any kind of speed anyway.

@Scott6255 Congratulations!
I missed one of my four runs this week due to not feeling well, but I got in the other three Friday, yesterday, and today. It was really windy today, so I ran on the dreadmill today. Tomorrow is supposed to be a rest day, but I will likely swap it with a run later in the week since I’m off work tomorrow and will have more time to get the in in during daylight.
