Not just ice in the beard today, but ice in the mustache and frost on my outer layer. 16 degrees F, but no wind. Even made it out before the sun cleared the horizon.8 -

Slowly, but surely, gaining miles. My first 5k of 2019 is coming up in two weeks. In other news, winter has finally come to Mid-Michigan. I got spoiled in December with above average temperatures. This week, I was reminded why I don't like to run outside in the winter. Brrrrrrr!!

Ya know.... I was thinkin’ on this run.... if we @shanaber, maybe @ddmom0811, @RunsOnEspresso and others that are or might be interested in running Hawai’i, the Kona marathon is in June. It’ll be hot enough swim with @HonuNui. A full, half, 10k and 5k are offered. Say 2020?
As DH would say, you never have to twist my arm to go to Hawaii. He does think I'm weird for wanting to go places and run though so that is the harder part.6 -

Jan 1 : 1.5 =1.5/30 miles, walking 5.6 miles (after run) note: run took 19.13 min
Jan 2: 3.02= 4.52/30 miles, walking 11.13 miles (after run): run took 37.02 min 👍improvment
Jan 3: rest day= 4.52/30 miles, walking 4.11 (after run) I think I pushed myself too hard too fast for a non seasoned new runner the day before. My legs were sore up until last night.
Jan 4: 1.91= 6.43/30 miles, walking 4.22 (after run): no time improvement
Jan 5: 1.5= 7.93 miles, walking 7.47 (after run)
Jan 6: 1.5= 9.43/30, walking 4.5 (after run)
Jan 7: 2.90= 12.33/30, walking 11.19(after run) run took 20.17 👎 today I was lethargic and not feeling it, i consider it a win that I did it at all.

Actually, the time qualifying window for the 2019 NYC Marathon was calendar 2018. At this point, either you ran a qualifying time or you didn't. Either it was in one of the NYRR sanctioned races that have a guaranteed entry attached, or it was in a non-NYRR race and you're eligible for one of a "limited number" of slots for non-NYRR time qualifiers.
I know this off the top of my head because I time qualified for the 2019 NYC Marathon at the 2018 Boston Marathon, the 2018 Wineglass Marathon, and 3 of the 4 half marathons I ran in 2018. Plan A is to be on the site as soon as I can after it opens claiming qualification based on Wineglass. Then I see if I'm fast enough at the keyboard; if not, I get dumped into the lottery with everyone else.
Looks like 15% of the lottery entrants got lucky in 2018. I don't think I'm particularly lucky in games of pure chance; if anything, I'm less lucky than average.
@MobyCarp I did not come close to a qualified time in 2018 and I don’t anticipate coming close in 2019.
I am also not particularly lucky. Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)...
I grew up outside of NYC and would love to experience the city in that way. If it happens, wonderful. If it doesn’t, I will move onto the next bucket list race (without a qualifying time).

A lady who works with my mum entered the lottery for Boston 2019 and got in! I'm unbelievably jealous. A kiwi running the BM on lottery!
No lottery for Boston is available to US citizens. OTOH, a Kiwi will have substantially larger travel costs to run Boston than I will.4 -

I never did update my run yesterday. I didn't forget, I just ran out of time. I did run 9.01 miles. It was so cold. Not freezing like some of y'all have to deal with, but 37F feels like 32F is too cold for me. I was really kind of dreading the run, but like I have seen a lot say on here the toughest part was getting out the door. Once I got going it wasn't bad at all. I was cold starting out but I did warm up some. I wore two pairs of socks and my feet were pretty good the whole time. I started with 2 pairs of gloves and took one pair off about 1/3 of the way into the run and took the second pair off around the middle of the run, but had to put them back on. I used a trick that I read on here last winter about using a t-shirt as a makeshift balaclava. I have to say it worked really well. I did have a few issues. I noticed that my bra strap was a little tight, but with the gloves I wasn't really able to loosen it well and I ended up with a little chaffing on my collarbone. I think because the plastic part was rubbing when it is usually not in that spot. And I dropped my phone once. It was shortly after I got a drink and ate a couple of chews. I think when I pulled the chews out of my flipbelt I dislodged the phone and then I accidentally hit the cord for the earbuds and pulled it out. Luckily my otterbox kept it safe. I really need to look into getting some wireless headphones. I just have a hard time finding earbuds that don't fall out of my ears. Plus when I run I only use one earbud so I need to find something that will stay in my ear and that I can just use one side. So overall I had a great run yesterday. Once I got past the mental hurdle of going outside when it is almost freezing I really enjoyed the run. I probably would have enjoyed it more if it had been between 55F and 65F, but it was still good.

@jesslobbett Great job on finishing week 3 on C25K! Lots of runners on here (myself included) started with C25K. One thing I love about this group is that there are so many people on so many different levels from new runners to very experienced and everyone cheers everyone on.

Volunteering at the St. Croix 40 winter ultra race Sunday was a lot of fun. I left my house at 2am after 3 hours of sleep and drove 2 hours to the state park where the race was held.
The race was a 40 mile loop course and is meant as a warm up or practice race for the Arrowhead 135M or the Tuscobia 80M & 160M winter races. These races have three divisions, foot, ski and bike. Since they are run in the winter, each participant must carry with them certain survival equipment such as a rated sleeping bag, bivy, stove, fuel, and a certain amount of calories beyond what is expected for the race. The runners and skiers carry all this equipment in a sled they pull behind them. The bikers have a pack on the back of their bikes. There is a checkpoint, but there is no aid stations so it's run self-supported.
The runners and skiers started at 6pm and the bikers started at 10pm. It was an unusual start as everyone had to start IN their sleeping bags and bivy sacks, so when the horn sounded, instead of a mad rush down the course, it was a mad rush to get out of the bivies, get them stowed, and get down the trail. I wasn't there but I heard it took anywhere from 6 to 15 minutes for the racers to get going, so there was no conga line.
There's a checkpoint about half way through the course where the racers have to stop and show they can use their stoves by boiling a cup of water. At the end of the race there's a gear check to make sure they still have all their gear, and most importantly, still have 3000 calories left in their packs. Again, this really isn't needed in this race, which is all in a state park, but it is needed for the longer races so it's required here.
My first job was to transport the course sweepers the 30 mile point. They had already run 24 miles, as I recall, and took a break. 6 miles of the course was on a closed, icy road and since I have a 4x4 pickup, I volunteered to drive down this road, drop them off, and pick up all of the trail markers on that section on my return. Thankfully snowmobiles had traversed the route and left enough tracks that I was able to get up the icy hills without sliding into the ditch, I just made sure I didn't stop on the hills or I wouldn't get back up. When I reached the end, I realized I had missed a marker and had to drive all the way back to the other end again. I didn't really mind, it was an enjoyable drive and I had some great bluegrass music to listen to.
After returning to headquarters, I was tasked with helping at the finish line. I cheered them on as they approached and then did the gear check. It was interesting to see what was brought for the 3000 calories of emergency food. Most racers used a jar of peanut butter. Several used a couple pounds of butter. I also saw leftover halloween candy, Costco-sized jar of Nutella, a big bag of Lindt chocolates and, most nasty, olive oil.
The last two racers, the only two skiers, reached the finish at 8:30 am and then we helped pack everything up. @MNLittleFinn was scheduled to help with the cleanup/packup, but we ended early so I think we had most everything taken care of by the time he showed up. I had a good conversation with him but forgot to get a picture. He's dealing bursitis in his foot but is hopeful he can run the Zumbro 50M in April followed by the Superior Spring 50K in May (which I also signed up for). His wife signed up for the 17M at Zumbro so what Erik is hoping to do is run two laps of his race (which is 3 laps total and starts 8 hours earlier) and join his wife for her lap and his final lap. Very cool if it works out. I'm planning on volunteering for most of that race, then pacing one of the 100M runners for a lap. I have my 50M race two weeks later so I decided not to race Zumbro.
It was a lot of fun, particularly this being the first year. I plan on volunteering for this every year. You can see photo here and here.
I had planned an hour on the elliptical yesterday but I was too tired. I did some core work instead.

P.S. I can't believe that so many of you not only notice my little post about a 5k but take the time to call me out specifically.
Quick short story. Years ago I worked for a huge, national life insurance company. I took a call from one of the contact center reps who had a very strong foreign accent. She was nearly in tears because the caller she had on the line was being terrible to her. I took the escallated call from her and solved the issue for the customer. Later that day, she sent me an email, copying my manager. It said "Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. You are rock." She clearly got an American saying wrong but she was so sincere. From that day forward, anytime someone in our department did something great, we would send a shout out that said "You are rock!"

So Saturday when I went for my actually-outside-run (tm) a woman pushing a stroller saw me and derisively said "woah," which I can only imagine was from my giant scarf that I used instead of a scary balaclava which I couldn't find (it was like minus 30). I need to get 9 more 5 km runs in this months to meet my goal! I will try to get outside for some of those even though it is frigid; I think the fresh air and sunlight are good for me.
My January goal is 60 km. I'm working towards a 59:59 10 km
1/2: Stair climber + beginner core workout (see bodyfit by amy, beginner ab workout on youtube)
1/3: 5 km (treadmill)
1/4: 5 km (treadmill, 31:50)
*brief break for small medical issue*
1/12: 5 km (outside!)
1/14: Stair climber / cross train day (while watching the great british baking show on my phone)

Thank you all for the great jacket suggestions/insight into why you don't wear one. I understand the being wet from sweat anyways but when the rain is soooooo cold coupled with the wind it would be nice to have that extra layer.

It's not as bad now we have a direct flight to Chicago but yeah its pretty bad lol. I'd totally figure it out if I got to run Boston though. Soooo cool4 -
