WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR MARCH 2019

Hi, we have been asked to have Bea this Thursday morning while DDIL does some charity work. We said yes, as we love having just one child and she is a great, positive joy. We will have to get up extra early to do our exercises! But she is such a positive and confident child that we love to have her. I will be leaving before she leaves to get to my dancing class, but DH can manage!

WELCOME new people! We all started somewhere! I lost my weight very slowly and even more slowly increased my exercise. Now I am at target and maintaining with a healthy lifestyle, but it didn't happen overnight. :noway: I had to learn how to eat and how to exercise. I was a dedicated anti-exerciser! Now I am an addict!

The nurse at the clinic wants me to do a week of blood pressure measurements at home. My pressure was a tiny bit high, but not by much. It's generally much lower at home. I take 10 mgs Amlodipine. It's a mystery to me why I have high blood pressure as I do all the right things, except for the fact that my mother had it. I find it very annoying.

Y’all know I am the queen of decluttering and organizing, but this is one thing I just cannot let go of. I have every one of ours from 1975 to the present, filed in order by year. All but the last 7 are in a huge hanging file box in the attic. The last 7 are in a smaller file box in our office, My kids will just have to make a bonfire when Dave and I are gone,

I think my kids and grandkids will get a good laugh when they see my income for 1967 lol

Janetr my dentist does the same thing. When had crown in the fall got there at 10 not done til 1:30. They wanted an x-ray to make sure all the grit was gone I was too tired. Hope it goes well for you.

In 1991 when I cleaned out my mother's house after she died and got rid of lots of stuff including her income tax returns going back to 1933 when she filed for the first time, I felt good about being able to let go of official documents that really didn't have to be saved. When I told my accountant that I'd done that, she was so disappointed that I'd done that because she said she would have loved to see the old returns.

Wow, crazy. In my Mom's stuff we found rent reciepts for like $8.00 for the month. Wow

My husband got hit by a car when he was three. Stayed in the hospital a week. Had to have his ear sewn back on. The bill was in my in-laws papers when they died. It was something like $26 and they paid $3 a week to pay it off. Amazing!

Looking to lose more than 10lbs! LOl - and trying to start where I can: walks away from my desk - outside now that the weather is warmer. And, trecking a 3mi hike on the weekends... and I lost wt tracking cals here before - so back to the grind!

Today is Fun Facts About Names Day!

"Fun Facts About Names Day takes place during Celebrate Your Name Week, occurring during the first complete week in March each year. It is a time when people look up interesting and fun facts about names—-both about their own and of others."

My first name, Camille, is my mother's name and means "servant of the temple" in Latin. Supposedly people with this name have a deep inner desire for a stable, loving family or community, and a need to work with others and to be appreciated, which is true for me. The one I generally use, Yvonne, comes from a Germanic word meaning "yew tree" (perhaps an occupation name for "archer" since yew wood was used in bow-making). My maternal grandmother suggested it from his Cajun heritage.

Machka - The problem I had with graduate school was the "busy work" classes. As an adult, my time was more valuable to me and I found myself much less willing than I was as an undergraduate to memorize a bunch of stuff that a professional would just look up.

Dana - I use a wrist-wrap blood pressure meter at home and its readings are similar to what I get at the doctor's office. My Samsung phone can actually take my BP too, and it was pretty accurate but it often had trouble taking a reading when my hands were cold so I got tired of its whining and deleted that app.

Lisa - Sounds like your dream puppy turned out to be something of a nightmare! Brains are so weird.

Barbara - Yum, pizza! I haven't had any in ages... maybe it's time to put a batch of pizza dough in the oven and plan a treat.

Katla - I have a window-mounted hummingbird feeder too, and I love it! I take it down at the end of migration season, but I'll be watching for the first spring scout within the next month or so.

Rori - I love Skinny Taste. Will have to grab the recipe for the zucchini soup because that sounds good. We don't have that much soup weather so I want to enjoy it while it's here! Which reminds me, I need to pick up a pork roast for green chile stew.

Allie - Thank you for the movie recommendation! I've put "Ladies in Lavender" on my Amazon watch list.

Dana - You are entitled to a good rant - your sister's actions sound appalling! Hope good memories will eventually take precedence and you can forget about the hurtful stuff.

Okie - Wow, a shredding binge! At the moment I've got so much shredding piled up that I'm considering having a bonfire out back after the next rain. My scanner only does one sheet at a time so it would take me years to get through all the photos and documents. I wonder if it might be worthwhile to invest in one with a document feeder. I admire your productivity!

SueBDew - Oh, your friend's husband's comment just breaks my heart... On the night I arrived for what would turn out to be my mom's final hospitalization, she had what looked like a stroke or similar event from the cancer and she was non-responsive from that point to the end. As the nurses rushed in to check on her, my big strong dad sat heavily on the other bed and his face just crumbled as he said, "It wasn't supposed to be like this." I will never, ever get that image out of my mind.


Well, the new greenhouse did a good job last night and everything seems to be cozy out there with a small milkhouse heater running. Thank goodness we don't have to move those giant pots in and out anymore!

Tomorrow I get to pick up a new foster dog named Forrest. This one is a little different from our usual since he's not a full-blooded greyhound - he's a greyhound/saluki mix. He's much smaller than the big greys I'm used to, but I'm not complaining. It sounds like he'll be something of a project. He and his sister came out of a reported illegal racing operation. Our foster coordinator says they're very shy and shut down, and don't know how to walk on lead. I'd better make sure we're stocked up on training treats.

I have a bill of sale for a car my parents bought in 1950. They had to pay extra to get an automatic turn signal. I would have to look at it again I think it was about $3. The car cost about $1800 total. It was fun to find it.

Going through old paperwork and old photos is an emotional experience. Each item has a story from my past and I can deal with only a few of them at a time. Thus I limit myself to six or fewer items a day and find that I'm not emotionally overwhelmed. At the rate of six items a day, I can deal with about 2000 in a year. A few years ago I sorted through my own income tax returns going back to 1967 when I filed for the first time. My accountant suggested that I keep the return and any documents related to sale or purchase of real estate. As I separated the return from the accompanying paperwork, it was like throwing away a work of art. I can remember how hard I worked to gather the information and keep it organized in case of an audit. Doing my income tax was a creative process for me and represented a ton of work.

Part of the problem is that my Bachelor degree is a Bachelor of Education ... so I was taught how to teach.

Now I'm in a Masters in IT with professors, instructors, tutors, etc. who know their IT stuff (mostly), but who have never been taught how to teach.

So I'm sitting there thinking things like ...

"Really? That's your Powerpoint presentation?"
"You want us to do what?"
"This is not how to write a multiple choice test"
"What on earth is the point of this assignment?"

I try not to do that, but sometimes it can get really frustrating when I know the course could be presented better.

At the end of each course, I am given the opportunity to comment on the course, and I do. Some I've given high praise. Some not so much.

That first course with the "busy work" did not get high praise, and interestingly, I found out that it changed format the next year, and then the year after, the instructor I had stopped teaching it and it changed format again. Perhaps I and others got through that the class, as it was, was virtually pointless.


Regarding names, Machka is one I chose shortly after my ex-husband and I separated back in 1999. So it has been my name for 20 years now.

I chose it because the word Machka is the Serbo-Croatian word for female cat. It is actually spelled 'macka' with a little check over the 'c' which makes the 'c' into a 'ch' sound like 'church': mačka pronounced mach-ka

One of my ancestral origins is Serbian and I love cats.

Also, almost all the letters in Machka are in my birth names, and the last 2 letters are the first two letters of the name I would have given my daughter if I had had one. All that was a happy coincidence which aided my decision to choose Machka.

My current husband and I met online first, on a cycling forum, so he knew me as Machka. And when we met in person toward the end of a 1200 km bicycle ride in 2003 in France, he called the name "Machka!" as I walked past in a big dining hall. I wondered who on earth would know that name, so I went over, and it turned out to be the person I'd "talked" to on the forum. So he still calls me Machka from time to time.

Went to Y and couldn’t believe the parking lot was full. It was 28 degrees but people were tire of being indoors. Stopped by store to get water before getting back home.
