Good morning all! Happy Saturday!
Barbara- LOve the ceasar salad! lol I think you also posted the article with the graphs of violence, wars, etc over the years? That was a very interesting and enlightening read. Thank you for sharing!
Machka- I bet you are really going to like your rowing machine. That is one of those machines that I am always looking for a "second hand" one. I loved using the rower at the gym.
Suebdew- Enjoy your golfing! I have never golfed; but I have caddied for my father. So...if you ever need a caddy and I am in the area...
PIp- Floyd looks very cool in his sunglasses! lol Nice picture of the three of them. What's up with the bikes? Are those your "warm weather" bikes? Getting them ready for the road?
Heather- Love your breakfast table (and bowls)! So pretty! It is nice to have someone whose very presence keeps aware of what you are eating.
Janet R and Dana- at 5'8, I can vouch for the difficulty in finding long enough pants that also fit right. Once I find a brand that fits well, I try to stay with it.
b4leaving- Love your kitties! I adore their names! Very creative. What is your name, again?
Tracey- Still thinking of you and your job interview! Yes, take the extra time to prepare and to think positive thoughts.
When the term "networking" was new; I found the idea of it to be cold and calculating (yes, like "Iwanttogettoknowyouifyoucandosomethingforme"). Now, I find networking to be a really handy tool to get the job you want. I figure most people would rather hire someone that they know, or that comes referred from someone that they respect. I have a couple of social media sites (local) that I use to network and find childcare clients, but the majority of all of my families come to me by referral from a current/former family.
Networking brings to mind the admissions scandal that has come to light. IF you have helped your child with college admissions (I don't mean bribery and illegal means- just applications, fees, testing), you probably have realized that a LOT of "getting in" to certain colleges depends on who you know (with a little bit of "financial backing" thrown in). When we went through all of this with our daughter, Lauren, twelve years ago, it was a HUGE disappointment to me to know that things were that "skewed" toward the children of the families that have money/status. She didn't get admitted to the college of her choice until she was in her sophomore year of a local college. She got an apology letter from the admissions dept at the college of choice stating that her "application and information package were misplaced; and that they had been following her progress at her current school and would love to have her reapply for the upcoming year." By that time, she was in the middle of her study abroad year in France and was mad as a hornet when she got that letter. The thing that turned the tables for her was the fact that there were a quite a few students from her "top choice" college studying at the same college in France; and she had become close friends with them. So...everything worked out for the best. She applied and was accepted and her Junior, Senior years (and her Masters program years) were all paid for by her college of choice. So... I think, that although the application/acceptance process into colleges in the US (I can't speak for other countries) is slightly nefarious; if you have the qualities the school is looking for, they will come after you. BUT...as a mother of two very average students (both my boys), these are the kids that would be overlooked in the bigger (more noteworthy) colleges. Lauren has always had lots of drive and ambition and endless energy. The boys were in school mainly for the social aspect (they come by that trait honestly -me) and the drive and ambition was not there. They did just fine at community colleges and local colleges. As someone who never went to college, I feel any higher education you get (whether it is formal education, apprenticeship type, or taking small classes to keep your knowledge current) is beneficial.
OMIGOD! I just saw my first "string" of cyclists going by! lol I heard them talking before I saw them- about a dozen! Spring is here! It is official!
Well, I have got to get my grocery list made up and get busy with my day. Love to you all! xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)4 -
PIp- Nevermind about my question on the bikes! Saw your answer, above^!1

Jake saw the cancer doctor for a follow-up after being off chemo since November. The doctor said his blood test results looked great and he didn't have to come back again for three months. We celebrated by going out for frozen yogurt.9

Barbie! Great news! So pleased for both of you...

Barbie so happy for you and Jake.
Katla and Barbara thanks for your comments over my basement battle.
After seeing those pictures of Nebraska I am humbled. My problem is so small compared to that devastation.
I needed to order the extra gutter extension regardless. There is one on there now but it is not long enough when we have heavy rain. The downspout from our garage and the second story converge into one gutter. This would work if the grading took the water away from the house. The extra gutter will make sure it is far enough away.
We have had water come into our basement from this spot in the past. If I had not been bailing all day it would have happened again with much more water. I know what a pain dealing with that water and that again is small compared to a foot of water throughout a basement or worse.0 -
Off to Bea's birthday party! Poor DH has to miss the last half of his team's important soccer match.

Margaret I live in Virginia, but am a native Nebraskan...so devastating...makes me very sad.

Yvonne: Yoga is available at my health club three mornings a week. Most of the students are 50+. I don’t know of any evening yoga classes there. There is also a parachute “yoga” class held in the same space a couple of mornings a week before the scheduled yoga classes. I’ve watched part of a class but have no desire to take the class myself. :noway:
Machka: You have lived such an adventurous life. I love to hear your stories about work and jobs.
Lisa: I am delighted with your job satisfaction, and wish you great success with the Federal grants you will be pursuing.
Barbie: Congratulations on the good medical report for Jake!
My DH has been scheduled for a colonoscopy and it is weeks away. I want it done NOW. You don’t always get what you want. :ohwell: The outcome of the test could have a big impact on our travel plans to visit our kids. I'm hoping the results will lead to improvements in his digestion problems.

Barbie-congrats on Jake’s Medical report. That’s wonderful.
Thursday night my sister called, drunk, and said some very hateful stuff to me. Last night, equally drunk, she calls and apologized for all she said the night before. So today is a new day, and it’s bright and sunny...a bit chilly though.
Yesterday, Ides of March and my daughter’s English class is finishing Julius Caesar. I’m guessing that was pre-planned.
Colleges-sort of glad she’s just an average kid who will probably go to a state university. Can’t imagine being under that much pressure that one would feel the need to “buy” their admission.

Heather - Love your breakfast nook, so peaceful looking. I had one of those hungry days too yesterday. I tried just picking a couple of small things to curb it, but it didn't work. I should have just made something and been done with it.
Allie - I really hope that you find a job that is more to your liking. It seems there is a lot of drama at the job you currently have. In my experience though, new ownership is a roller coaster for at least a year. I hope it settles for you.
Lisa - I am right there with you about adult children being at home. In 2012 both of our daughters moved back home. Lauryn, her husband and 1 year old Jonah moved back in after the apartment they were renting flooded on the 4th of July. We told them not to look for anything until we all returned from a trip to NB in August. We were all going for different lengths of time throughout the whole month of August. When Kaitlyn came back from NB she was moving back home from Manitoba so she came at the beginning of September. It was the 5th of November before they all left again and got their own places. Kaitlyn worked in a neighbouring city as a caregiver to three children. I had to drive her both directions every day as she didn't have her licence. It was a long couple of months and I cheered the night they all left. I can't imagine doing it again, but of course would if the need arose.
I talked to my daughter about sharing the Costco membership cost and she is going to split the cost with me. She will do the shopping when I go as her name is not the same as mine. We do a lot of shopping together anyway so it's not out of our way.
I have noticed that most of the companies that I apply for are through recruiting companies. I have my resume submitted with probably 15-20 of them right now. As a matter of fact, the interview I am going to on Monday is with a recruiter that received my resume through another position that I had applied for. I really miss the days of walking into a business and dropping off a resume. Most companies will not even accept walk ins now. I have talked to a few people that still do hiring for the companies they work for and they told me they are still receiving 250-300 applications within 24 hours of an ad being posted. It is still a very poor job market in Alberta. So many vacant buildings and so many professionals out of work. Everyone I have talked to that has been through layoffs and the job market have told me that they were out on average 6 months. I just need to be patient.
Kim - I so admire what you have done to create your own business. I can't imagine the fear that must have been at first though.
Yesterday I took a drive through the city on the routes that I walk checking out the sidewalks. I think by Monday I will be able to get out for my walks again. The only obstacle right now is getting out of our trailer park as the water and ice is up over my ankles. My thought is I can drive to the grocery store and park and go for a walk though. I can't today as I have the kids, and tomorrow I am going shopping for my MOB dress with Kaitlyn and will be walking all day. Monday I think that will be a nice way to relax after my interview!
I am off, have a great Saturday everyone!

My friend who walks with me, shares a Costco membership with her daughter who has a different last name and lives in a different state. Each has her own card.2

Barbie .. great news for Jake and you!
My youngest son is home for his Spring Break ... just picked him up from the airport. He has asked me to help him get his eating habits under control while home. He's not been eating, but when he does eat it has been all fast food/junk ... and he is wise enough to know that this has been affecting his mental health. I have healthy meals planned for the week anyways, so this will be no problem, but he and I have to talk about the steps he can take to change things when back at school.
I have a BJ's (like Costco) membership through my employer. Only costs me $25 per year and I do buy a lot of meat/fish from them. It's been worth it to me so far.
I just completed 11 weeks following a 19:5 fasting model. I'm down 17 pounds today ... that's an average of 1.5 pounds per week. This is more than I accomplished in all of 2018 without fasting so I'm going to stick with it for a while. Here's the thing ... while I've had some days where I really overdid on sugar or what we often consider poor choices, they were followed by really "healthy" days. It evens out and I don't feel a need to beat myself up anymore over one day's perceived "failures." I'm eating what I like within reason.

Bad night last night. I didn’t get much sleep because our dog Dolly wanted out at 1:00 am then at 3:00 am. Then she didn’t want to go back to her crate so she sleep between us until I got up at 7:30. It wouldn’t be so bad but I couldn’t move and I was too drowsy to move her off the bed. She weighs 80 lbs!
I didn’t tell you Dolly got out the morning before and ran all over the neighborhood then down to the creek behind us which is too wild to go in. (Hounds can run fast and they have a lot of energy) Finally she came back into the yard but was covered in mud from her belly down. I got a bucket of warm water and washed her down while Bob held her still. Another Ugh!
So, today again, I had breakfast and fell asleep on the couch. I’m a mess today. It’s 1:00 pm and still in my pajamas. Ugh!!! I did get a load of clothes in the washer and just ate lunch.
I hope you all have a good day! Mine is just starting!

Prayers please for my BnL! I wrote a long post describing the state that he is in and then I erased it. Just writing it helped me feel better.

If a member purchases a Costco Cash Card, a non-member can go to Costco and use it. They don't expire.
Also, non-members can use Costco's pharmacy or optician.
Costco members are allowed to bring 1-2 "guests" each time they shop at Costco. There is no scrutiny; the member just shows his/her membership card and the guests walk in with the member.
It's to Costco's advantage for people to come through the doors, so they make it pretty easy to do so.0 -

Everyone - thanks for all the Costco info. Now to convince my Mom that it's really ok. Old people can get so set in their ways-LOL!!!
Barbie - Great news for you and Jake!!!
Tracey - Hope the interview goes great! And really there was more fear in losing the house and everything I worked so hard for that the fear of starting a business never occurred to me. I was just doing what ever I could to keep my creditors paid. It was probably 2 years before I even realized that I had done something that others would not; and even now it surprises me that more folks don't just do what I did. We all have more skills than we know and have more areas we would pay for someone to help us than we have thought of.

PS - Connie, I am sorry to hear that you have family with alcohol problems. It is such an impact on everyone.

Morning dear ladies from Nebraska. So far the town I live in has not had flood water, but most the towns around us do. This is crazy weather.
I was off work yesterday as I work all weekend and the doctor called with the lab report from my colonoscopy and it was pre-cancer. I will have another one done in 5 years unless I start having problems. Not sure how I feel about this.
Barbie--Great news on Jake's tests. Happy dance for both of you.
Heather--What a beautiful place to start the day. Like your choice of bowls.
Tracy--Keeping you in prayer about the job interview. I keep thinking at my age I would be terrible at trying to find a job. I have been at my current job going on 32 years. I just pray I can hold on to it for another 4and half years until I can retire.
I friend texted me wanting to know if we can come out after work and help her unload a trailer of stuff she bought back from where she was living. She owns a farm outside of Wood River which is about 15 miles from here and they are under water, but she just left the guys she has been living with the last 7 years as he has been being abusive and she broke away while he is in the hospital. Have to see how close we can get.
Take care and stay safe. Blessings, Vicki GI NE4 -
Vicki ~ Please take care and maybe another opinion on the pre-cancer concern. Why in the world would you wait 5 yrs to have another test.
Beth ~ Glad your son is wanting to improve his diet and congrats on your weight loss.
Kim ~ My father never went to college but he was a hard worker and started 5 businesses in his lifetime. He became very wealthy for an uneducated country boy. Your business sense is great!

Barbie - terrific news!
Sending loads of love to all those with health or job worries.
The party went well, but I ate a few too many egg sandwiches, my favourite thing.
Bea LOVED her twirly skirt. Here she is opening it.
And here is a very blurry picture of her twirling with Edie . I also gave her a set of cars and trucks which we had great fun racing on the kitchen floor.
Then we got the bus back and DH watched the rugby. We ordered takeaway tandoori.
Wind is blowing harder than ever.
Much love to you all, Heather UK XXXXXX8 -
PS - the beer on the table is my son"s brand new non alcoholic ( 0.5) beer. Just launched from his brewery. It is excellent. (for the newbies, my son is a director of a drinks and pub company. He is a recovering alcoholic. Go figure. He runs their brewery. This is his new venture)

Heather ... I love the blurry photo of the girls twirling ... something "artsy" about it!
Question: I need some help using up my vegetable box contents this week. What do you like to do with red kale and black kale (dinosaur kale). I received both and don't have much experience with them.1
