Do any of you feel like not tracking if you over eat?

I bought some yummy GF bread and without thinking I ate half a loaf when I got home. IT's very dense. I need to toss it right in the freezer or im' at big risk. The freezer worked well last loaf.
good-ish writing session at café this morning. Sent 5 then 8 pages to corrector

If I'm taking a diet break, I don't bother, but if I'm aiming to lose weight I still track because what I do one day isn't as important as what happens over the week. As long as my average calories are under for the week, I'm good. :)

Thanks to all who have commented to me about the gym. Kay, I didn't realize that you could use the Silver Sneakers at other gyms and found out there are 4 or 5 in my area that I can try. I actually found the Silver Sneakers website and learned some interesting facts. I think I will visit at least one or two more facilities to see if there is a better fit for me. I wish I had had the gumption to tell the guy that all I wanted was to use the equipment and get some exercise as I have sat at the computer playing games and watching television for years. His goal and my goal were completely different. Yes, I am obese and have lots more fat than lean muscle; but, I think for someone who has not experienced ANY exercise in years a slow work into it will be better.

Best wishes to everyone as we go through the weekend! :)

@1948Peachy what a pain about the coach. I had 20 free minutes coaching with my gym membership and I never used it. I planned one and then had to cancel.

@trucker743 that's too bad for the walking terrain, but must be beautiful. you could try the gym and see if you and up using it. I figure if I go 2x a week it's not too bad at 25 x month: that makes 3 euros a WO. less if I go more often. maybe you can find a swimsuit style you like. they have some looks that are unusual I remember my grandma having one that looked something like this https://www.incywincy.net/products/kes-vir-ladies-swimsuit minus the highlighted waist

@Machka9 I use wix for my website. is there a reason you prefer wordpress to wix? (since you are somewhat in the field.) GL on your exams!!!!

hi to everyone else. sorry if I missed something key. I skim. now I'm sleepy after a resultful morning. want to nap. home is it great disarray. most seriously needs that 30 min of tidying (missed yesterday).

Found a peri menopause app to record my symptoms think it’s a better fit than that glow app for me.
Hubby layed with us so JR would calm down go to sleep lol JR stopped jumping looked like oh noooo Dads here. His face stayed that way he didn’t move a muscle. Was a nice fast way to put him to sleep so I could go to sleep.

Carol- Yes definitely check the others out 1st my gym had the most older members because we had more geared towards them even a stationary bicycle class with a giant screen where that was computerized. They could vote for mountain bike trail to meadows without really going up a mountain. I enjoyed watching their faces light up. We also had a table for people in wheelchairs or walkers that was lifted off the ground so easy to get onto a trainer would for free make sure you were on securely stay if you liked. We had a lift to lower people who needed it into the pool! Hand rails everywhere! Wonderful portable seats like you have in a home shower for those needing it. Other gyms in our area were geared towards younger crowds or the 24hr guy who used a key card to get in worked alone. The other good gym in our area for older crowd was hospice one it had a lot of kids too. Just find your fit never be afraid to speak up Insurance is still paying.
You go to a doctor hand a card over that’s not free either you payed for it with taxes to money to laboring.

Beth thank you for the info on genetic testing. Before they start him on anything I will request this to hopefully prevent something like this again. I will get the bug into his eat too. He will hopefully be able to start eating again today. They did not want him to eat in the state he was in because they didn't want to add pneumonia to the mix. He has been asking to eat when I explained to him why they are waiting it helped.

Michele when I had my cap done they wanted to follow up with an x-ray because sometimes some of the materials they use to fix they tooth get left behind this can cause gum irritation. Good reminder for me if I have teeth work done and something doesn't feel right a few days after to make sure I go back in before problem gets worse.

I am reading Beauty in Broken Places about a young woman who was five months pregnant and her thirty year old husband had a stroke. I have only read the first chapter but am already finding her story moving and helpful to me. It was particularly helpful to hear someone else say how difficult it is to figure out a way to grieve when the person you love survives such a horrific event. I have also learned to hate the word resilient and God does not give us more than we can handle.

The phrases I do find helpful the only way out is through. Grow through what you go through. (the gardener in me resonates on that one.)

My impression is the wordpress offers more functionality than wix especially for someone like me who can code in HTML.

Also if I wanted to get into the business of creating webpages, wordpress is a good one to know.

And I've got connections who know how to use wordpress. :)

Thanks! I'm just starting to wade through all my exam material. Yay.

Carol - the following is purely my opinion about gyms. I see our gals here have given you a lot of good tips!
I've been thinking more about your gym experience. I have a feeling it's pretty early for you to start doing any machines other than easy/slow treadmill or similar cardio right now, considering your fairly recent knee surgery and being new at the game. Pick a treadmill next to someone with gray hair, lol, who is not running on it like she's 35!

First, I'd give either your doctor, surgeon, or physical therapist a call and get their opinion on workout machines. I'm the type that needs to get going with specifics, not just "easy knee exercises" or some such. See if they'll give ideas about which machines you can specifically use and starting weight. Speaking from experience, it's easy to overdo it and cause injury at our age which often takes a long time to recover from.

Second, when and if you get to that stage, I think a trainer who has lots of experience with seniors and folks coming off surgeries is best. I have a senior friend who had major back surgery, and had been going to the gym prior to the surgery. After her recovery, she decided to have some sessions with a trainer there to get back in shape. The trainer had her doing movements and exercises that were NOT appropriate for her condition, even though the trainer was certified and was aware of her surgery.

Third, at my gym, Silver Sneakers and Silver & Fit has group sessions that I've heard are really great. In some of the classes, folks use light weights. These classes are specifically geared toward those of us who are older and may have physical limitations. When I get my footwear and balance figured out, I want to give them a try. I already know a lot of the folks who attend these classes, and I've heard they have once a month healthy potlucks, etc. This would be a good way to find someone with health conditions similar to yours who may have valuable advice, or can at least suggest a trainer there who can be trusted.

I haven't been to my gym in a while due to scheduling conflicts but want to start back. I do my light strength training session at home two or three times a week with dumbbells and ankle weights. Then my time at the gym has been treadmill only since it's something I can pop onto when I have half an hour to kill before an appointment or waiting for shops to open.

It's interesting watching what goes on.... the treadmills are all on the outer perimeter of the second floor which opens to a vast view of the machines on the first floor. At the times I go, generally mid-morning, there are a lot of seniors, mostly men, using them. They do a couple reps and then sit there for a while or wander off and chat with someone else leaving their towels all over. :D I'm the type that wants to get it done and get going so waiting to use a machine like that doesn't work for me. I know it's important for these elderly guys to have some social interaction.

My final piece of advice - get the Strong Women Stay Young book or check it out online, it gives tips on how to do the weights they suggest on machines - starting weight/reps, etc. So important to start out really light and work up over weeks and months if you are new to this.

Good luck! And yes, check out other gyms.
My doctor visit yesterday regarding balance... she couldn't find anything wrong neurologically. So I'm to start on the balance standing on one foot then the other, and when I get good at that, do it with my eyes closed. She said I'll be retraining my leg muscles and my brain.

Heather, I think you have done the balance on one foot and have built up to several minutes?

:'( Came home from the 45 minute before breakfast dog walk to find that the battery on my pedometer had died so I didn't get credit for a bunch of my steps. Now the new battery is in and I'm off for the longer after breakfast walk.

Did Rodney Yee’s Power Yoga DVD today. That guy has one great body! The plan for tomorrow is to do Denise Austin’s Blast Away the Pounds DVD. This is another new one for me.

Boy, has it been raining! Last night it came down cats and dogs. Supposed to rain the next 3 or 4 days.

JR – my doctor told me to wear cotton underwear, too. But sometimes you can’t dry yourself off completely which is why he also suggested the hairdryer. I just got mine at the Salvation Army. On low heat, I can stand that. Give it a try, it certainly can’t hurt

Vince is very worried. I admit, I’m worried, too; but I try not to show it. Clyde hasn’t really eaten since yesterday, he’s not acting “right” (usually, when you pet him he purrs but he doesn’t now), I’m not sure if he’s used the litter box or not but it wouldn’t surprise me if he hasn’t since he really doesn’t have anything in his stomach. We’re supposed to go to the vet’s later this morning.

Making a banana ginger cake for the gal who lets me take the water class. Gotta use up some of those bananas!!!

Welcome everyone new! I’m speaking to you, dghopke (you’ve gotta give us another easier name to call you)

JR – thanks for that link. Fortunately, I’m not on Medicare YET, but it’s coming (way too soon). I know that I’ll probably get a supplement, just not sure which one. I know that Aetna RIGHT NOW has SS and so does Humana. BCBS of NC just recently dropped it. Who knows what’ll happen by the time I go on it? It confirmed for me, tho, that you can go to any gym that takes SS. They do keep emphasizing SS classes, but I’d need something more. I’m pretty sure I will be able to go to any class, not just SS. When Vince went on Medicare, Mars (who he worked for) offers a “consultant” to help you get the right plan for you.

Irish Terry – When I buy jelly, I usually get the lower sugar type. I still remember my aunt making blueberry jelly. I had to go pick the blueberries and I remember that big “thing” draining the blueberries. Oh, the memories

Allie – you area a better person than I would be. I don’t know if I could be as close to Elena as you are. Just not yet. Maybe in a few years, but not yet. That’s just me

Karen VA – You are a godsend to your gs. What do his parents think of all this? You don’t mention them a lot. I would think they’d want to be more involved. Maybe they can’t for one reason or another

You know, I’m still 3lbs away from the weight I was at pre-Denise. How do you all get the weight off so quickly? I log faithfully, I usually have over 100oz of water a day, you know that I exercise daily.

Carol in GA – you certainly don’t look obese in your pic. Your face is thin. Check out the other gyms. I would add to what Lynette said to you. Get a trainer that is older. Someone who just works with elderly people can’t really understand things about our elderly bodies. They may have 10 even 20 years working with the elderly, but they still can’t totally relate to the aches and pains of the elderly. I know when I was in my 50’s I didn’t totally “get” how we need to go slower for a longer period of time, for example. I took a class years ago in exercise prescription for special populations. Today I can relate to a lot more.

Margaret – you’ve just confirmed for me that the dentist who did the root canal on me really was just trying to get experience, I really probably didn’t need it. But we had just moved to NC. What I really should have done was gotten a second opinion. He never suggested an xray afterwards

Barbie – I wouldn’t worry too much about the battery. If I know you, you’ll get the same amount of steps in regardless of whether you lost some or not

I have a few DVD's that I would be willing to sell for the price of the postage (which in the US is around $3)

They are Gold Gym Muffin Top Meltdown
Prevention's Get Moving with Chris Freitag
and My Fitness Coach for the Wii. This has a lot of exercise programs in the roughly 10/20 minute range focusing on upper body, lower body, flexibility, and cardio.

I'm always looking for new things. There's nothing wrong with these DVD's, I just get bored and want variety.

    If you're interested, PM me.

do I ever feel like it? sure, but do I track it anyway? sure

I don't think of what I do as a "diet" it's just a way of life, it's been that way for years. just like right now, I am back from my trip to Alaska. I started out at 5lb under my usual goal weight cuz I KNEW I was going to gain, even with the exercising that I still did every day and all the walking that I was going to gain ESPECIALLY with all the drinking I did. the food wasn't what I was used to so sometimes my tummy wasn't feeling it (but I knew that would happen and it tasted good going down). I didn't worry or stress about it. If ANYTHING I over estimated the calorie intake. I couldn't search for the food item on MFP cuz of no internet connection, but I wrote it down and dealt with the entry when I got back home. now that I'm back down, I am back at my goal weight only cuz of the now drinking and eating my usual stuff. the moral is I track no matter what. that's the only way I stay honest, even though I don't really need MFP anymore, I do it out of habit.

LANETTE I use electric toothbrush and stand on one leg for 1 min each Can do longer but not with eyes shut, that's really difficult. Might try again even if it's a few seconds

Watching women's football World Cup Germany v China England play Scotland tomorrow will watch that in a bar probably.

I've been getting rid of excess holiday weight. 2 days I go out drink and eat but the other days try not to eat until 1pm or later eggs, cheese, fruit lean meat and veggies. 1 hour exercise about 500 cals
    Seems to be working.
Worked out I nee about 1,600 cals to maintain, not much is it :D

Michele NC - Just got a new one at Christmas has the cool fan dryer setting even! So no burning my scalp or parts I used my other one to death itvdied out during using it for the Csection y surgery scars with witch hazel. Any types of insurance just call them y ask about SS same with gym they seem to be flip flopping month to month on who covering what. Some insurance won’t pay but they give you a discount rate for having it or a smaller fee (Some Insurance pays the sign up fees too). Some churches now are hosting free excersises y a few places like Curces I hear us affordable. I’m the buddy type or go for a walk type so just doing mine at home using you tube videos copying the workouts. I own some 2lb y 3lb y 5lb weights at home to use. Treadmill well haven’t been able to use it JR a mommy boy 👦 freaks out if I’m not in views(phase). Heard some funny folks use salad plates to toddler divider ones to keep potion control down...so utelizing what we got. Just found out potato chips vs Cheetos ones bigger serving size lol.
Meal preplanned tuna sandwiches 🥪 toasted, soup,a few chips on the side, tomato, with tea ☕️,water that’s my meal write it half the portions of each tadaa planned good enough.

NY Karen, the tree on the cake sounds wonderful!
Machka, it is funny how things that you haven't thought about in years can pop up! I actually made a mistake, Yorkton is a couple hours from where my son is, but Kamsack is about 45 min away and that's where my dad grew up!
Carol, Lanette certainly did give great advice! I go to a Y near me, there are a few classes geared specifically for older folks, they still do cardio, but at a slower, gentler pace. They also have the cardio machines, weight machines, pool etc, and I do use the machines, but I also do a few classes. I don't like the one that's slower and gentler, but I've been doing this for several years now and know when I need to dial back in the "regular" class. The instructor is also very good and gives a few different options for us to do, different levels to make it easier or more difficult. Definitely going to the other gyms to check them out is a good idea, and for sure if you can find a trainer who is older that would be ideal. I would also recommend a few sessions with a personal trainer, (again, an older one!) just so that you can get the correct form. It is very important to make sure that you are using the machine correctly to avoid injury.
Rita, those temps are just too much for me! Sounds like you two are having fun!
Thank you to all for your condolences. Looks like she has named hubby and I as executors. There is also a lawyer involved. We hope to dump the whole thing in his lap as we don't want or need any part of her estate, but hubby does have a brother who is mentally challenged. We just want him taken care of, so the house can be sold and the money can be used to get him into an apartment and take care of him. Hopefully lawyer will be competent and cooperative, although I'm sure this won't be the first time something like this will have happened to him.
Hugs for those needing them, congrats to those celebrating and welcome to the newbies!

@exermom What's your nette calories? some of us have to go really low to lose. For me to be sure to lose slowly I need to go to 1100 net calories. (which I have a hard time doing, on average, day after day after day. Another person spoke of 1200 to maintain. It seems unfairly low to me, but I see that that's the deal : I'm 5'2.5" 55 years old and slow metabolism runs in my family. exercise and weight training helps.

@pipcd34 good for you for keep tracking. that's discipline and inspiring. I always don't want to track when I eat too much, but checking that off here (or not helps me to say, ok I can go back and remember what I ate and check that one off, even if I'm past my calorie limit.)

I’m not really sure how to determine calorie burn. I have an ebike, peddle assist. I do peddle relatively hard most of the time. I went 32 miles in 3 hours. So I calculated it at 2/3 the time for a leisurely bike ride. Any other suggestions would be appreciated!

Michele- I just got out of that boat! I finally lost the weight I gained over my maintenance weight. It takes a lot longer to loose then to gain it! I logged and weighed everything. I preplanned my meals. I exercised consistently. It is very easy to over eat by a thousand or more calories a day. But, when we want to lose we can’t restrict ourselves the same amount...5:2 intermittent fasting does work. Two days out of the week you eat only 500 calories. I stuck to 1200 and I do 19:5 which is 19 hours of no food with a 5 hour window to eat. You will definitely get it off!

    Have a great day everyone!

    Mary from Minnesota/ Arizona

I wear a chest strap heart rate monitor everyday when I ride and workout. that's the only way I know how much I burn. I don't go by the estimate of what MFP says based on the time I ride
