Sunday -- Went cycling again. Was a bit chilly out there ... 12C to start and down to 8C by the end of the ride. That's three days of cycling in a row in the middle of winter!!
Distance: 27.02km
Elevation: 171m
Moving Time: 1:28:01
Elapsed Time: 1:31:12
Speed: Avg: 18.4km/h | Max: 29.9km/h
A very interesting article I came across about a year ago in the early days of my husband's recovery from the accident that resulted in his severe brain injury ...
https://www.brainline.org/blog/getting-back-bike/what-brain-derived-neurotrophic-factor-and-why-you-should-care
A quote from the article:
"Certain types of physical exercise have been shown to markedly (threefold) increase BDNF synthesis in the human brain, a phenomenon which is partly responsible for exercise-induced neurogenesis and improvements in cognitive function.
A three hundred percent increase in a protein known to help the brain recover is something to look at quite seriously. Neurogenesis is a simple concept. It is the growth of new brain cells.
Think about this for a moment: engaging in regular physical activity produces a chemical that is proven to stimulate new brain cell growth. This vital chemical keeps brain circuits running smoothly and is increased threefold by regular exercise. I call this nothing short of remarkable.
The good news is that you don’t need to be a daily cyclist to get this benefit. Shared by the doctor who presented at our group, thirty minutes of exercise, three times a week, will release BDNF’s and speed the neuro healing process."

Had a small pity party today. Don’t have them often. Was having a very productive day, getting stuff done. Went to basement to clean litterboxes, discovered one of the cats had urinated in corner of bathroom (away from the box). Started cleaning up, mopping floor, decided to wash boxes out completely in case there was some smell bothering one of them. Came upstairs to use the shower (since it was raining out, wasn’t going to drag out hose). Tried to turn off main shower head and use hand held, got it messed up, loosened up the whole thing. Got really frustrated, before I knew it was yelling at husband because he should be here to help me with this stuff. Mad at my kids for leaving me with their cats. Stomped around for a bit feeling sorry for myself. Decided that wasn’t getting me anywhere, went back to bathroom and fixed the shower head (like I did when my husband was alive) got everything clean. At least I hadn’t cleaned the shower yet today. Just strange how the stuff comes back out of nowhere.
On a more positive note, I calmed down, got basement cleaned up and litter boxes set back up, shut the bathroom door so they can’t use that room again. Bathroom is sparkling clean. Worked on some meal prep. While weighing some grapes to put in snack bags, I really started feeling more peaceful—it reminded me I am in control of me and am moving forward. May sound strange, but that worked as well as meditation.
Got everything cleaned up. Had a good dinner. Got enough exercise to have a no sugar added Klondike bar for snack. Ending day on a good note.
Thanks for listening to my whine. It’s the dumb stuff that gets us sometimes.

Sharon - your DGD and new hubby look blissfully happy--many good wishes for their future.
My happy place is here, where I am right now, at home, where I'm most at peace. I'm lucky to live here.
I tried antidepressants once, and had been on them for less than a week when I had the mini-epiphany that what I was doing was medicating myself to try to stay in my marriage (my previous one). Kind of a wake-up call, honestly. So I left him a few months later. It's my only experience with them, but I know that my son and my daughter have both been on them at one point or another. Their birth mother is bipolar, and they both have elements of that. For my kids, they level things out.
We took yesterday completely off, did absolutely nothing (well, I binged on the last season of Longmire while my husband read). It was good for both of us... but there are things we need to get done today now before the rain comes in this afternoon.
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR4 -
All the happy place pictures of water making me jealous! I do like the water, just don't have a spot around here I go to much. However, as I get older, I am discovering I can make any place my happy place (I just have to give myself permission to be happy).
Good night's sleep improved attitude. Changing up routine a bit. Got back on my exercise bike for the first time in several months (boy am I out of shape for that-evidently bike and walking use muscles differently!). Got 20 minutes in-not much but a start. Since getting 10,000 or more steps is not much of a struggle most days, I feel the need to start doing other exercises (my body seems to be asking for it, if that makes sense). Need to figure out what, but stretches, dumbbells, bike and resistance bands are all easy to add, so will work on that this week.
Sharon-granddaughter is beautiful! They are a great looking couple.
Off to church on yet another rainy, stormy day.

Thanks for article as DS son recovers I am encouraged he wants to walk so much. I go for about a mile walk around his ward and DH does the same thing when he brings him dinner. They do have food there in hospital for him. Bringing him the food gives us a chance to evaluate his progress. Still needs to sign the Hipaa form again. He feels about 70% there.I think he will be in until all the medication that was toxic to him is out of his system. That will be this Thursdays. He was given a long lasting version of this medication via a shot. It stays in the system for a month. He has told me he wants to stay in the hospital until he is sure he will get well. He hates hospitals like me so that is means to me is how sick he got from those meds.5 -

I have always loved the water. I don't remember ever not loving it. But oddly, I grew up in the land-locked prairies, often some distance away from any decent bodies of water ... and I never learned to swim well. I can manage to flounder my way down a 25 metre pool (gaining the attention of several concerned lifeguards in the process), but that's about it.
Still, water of some sort features highly in my memories. Mountain waterfalls and streams in the Rockies. The little man-made waterfall I found when I lived in Regina. Sylvan Lake near Red Deer. And of course the lakes in Manitoba.
I find it soothing.

Rebecca: Happy Birthday!!!
(((Ginny in OH))) Everyone is entitled to a pity party once in a while. I hope today is a better day. :flowerforyou:
Rori: The pool looks inviting. Do they keep it a certain temperature? I’d be interested in the hot tub during the cool part of the day and the pool during the heat of the day. The last place I went swimming was in Martin’s Island across the river from us on the Washington side of the river. That was several years ago and it is a happy memory.
Rebecca: Happy Birthday!!! I’m glad you had a great time with your son and baby Athena. I am so sorry that your sister is an alcoholic. I understand it is one of the most difficult addictions to conquer. I hope she decides to get help.
Sharon: Your DGD is a beautiful bride. I love the smiles on the happy couple’s faces.
Machka: I needed to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit to understand. 53 degrees in winter seems like a relatively pleasant bike ride temperature. Glad you enjoyed your ride. Your bay is gorgeous!!! :flowerforyou:
Ginny in OH: Brilliant! “All the happy place pictures of water making me jealous! I do like the water, just don't have a spot around here I go to much. However, as I get older, I am discovering I can make any place my happy place (I just have to give myself permission to be happy.”
Machka: I love the water, too. We live beside the Columbia River and love the water, and the animals that are attracted to it. We’re in the middle of town, but get to see deer, river otters, beaver, Osprey, hummingbirds and the occasional Bald Eagle. Some are residents and others are migratory. Love the Charlie Brown cartoon.
We have an overcast morning. I’m going to sit by the window and enjoy looking out.

Good morning all! Happy Sunday! I spent yesterday late afternoon/evening at my BIL/SIL's place (3 miles down the road). They had a bbq and invited the entire LaMore clan; but only three families showed up (the lakeshore LaMores; that is how we three that live in this area refer to ourselves.) Disappointing, because since my MIL passed in March, we haven't been together as a family. We went from "feast to famine" so to speak. Anyway, it was a wonderful evening. For my part just being able to sit and not do anything, talk to grown ups and have a drink or two was wonderful. Food-wise it worked out okay. I didn't plan to skip breakfast and lunch; but that is what happened when I slept in until 7:30am and then hustled off to grocery shop and run errands, then got home and got busy making the salad I was taking to the bbq (I got off easy!) So the only calories that I had to log were those from the bbq! I still came up a bit short according to mfp, but I am sure it was actually close to my normal daily intake in one meal + a very large mojito!
Rebecca- Happy belated birthday! What a way to celebrate with your kids and grandbaby! I love their dining table artwork!
Terri- Love the photo on the boat! I am sure I could be happy "floating" somewhere!
Machka- I would have to say that my happy place is wherever I am. I have moments of chaos and irritability, but for the most part, I am happy anywhere. I DO think that being outside makes me even happier, though. AND doing something physically enjoyable (walking, swimming, gardening (sometimes)) while outside boosts the happiness factor for me.
Sharon- Lovely grandaughter and her groom! So fun to see those wedding pictures and the new bride and groom. So full of hope for the future! I hope they can always remember those moments in the years going forward!
Janet- Forgot to tell you; I think the asymmetrical hairstyle is stunning on you! As are your new frames! Beautiful, fun, and chic!
Cathy- lol I am sure if I were in the middle of that Texas heat, the pool would be my happy place, as well! LOve the sign! Sometimes I think my life is surrounded by people saying "Hey y'all, watch this!" usually followed by a stunt that doesn't end well!
Beth- Thinking of you as your prepare for hearing aids/ cochlear implants! Also as you deal with the diagnosis on the rash. ((hugs))
Allie- So sorry that things are in a crazy state at work, with the new owner/owner's wife. I admire you sticking it out; are you still looking for something else? You have a lot to offer with all of your experience!
Kate- I love the umbrella installation and the pic of you under them! You look fantastic!
Lanette- I envy your Tai Chi in the park. I wish someone would offer it in my small town. Even just a once or twice a week. Unlike yoga, I think I could relax more with tai chi.
Machka, Rebecca, and someone else- You ladies were commenting on both alcoholism and (Machka) the building of neurological connections or brain cells through exercise like cycling. It reminded me of the movie The First Wives Club (one of my favorites). The scenes with Goldie Hawn's character; when the ladies confronted her about the many empty booze bottles in her home. Then also the scene when she was on the treadmill "boosting her endorphins" and "getting the best ideas while she works out", and plotting her revenge on the ex husbands. Movie aside, I have often thought that if people could replace their "bad habit" with a good habit (a physical type of good habit), they probably have a better chance at kicking the bad habit for good. Heather's son another great example of replacing the bad habit with a good one. He may have been able to run while he was drinking; but I bet he is running on a more regular basis and with running goals/intentions. Machka's hubby as well! It has been fascinating to see him get back into cycling and I really believe it aids in his over all healing. Inspiring people!
Lisa- Congrats to you and your family with the new baby coming! Whoot!
Well, today I slept in until 8:30! I allowed myself this concession, because I got two phone calls from Lauren. First one came at midnight and the second one at 4am (that is 11:00pm and 3:00am her time). Joaquin was not happy yesterday and was running a fever. Then last night came the vomiting and loose bms! Poor guy! When she called me at midnight, I just gave her the "this is what I would do" advice (which contained advice to call the on call nurse, if only to put her own mind at rest). Then when she called at 4am; she was drawing a bath for Joaquin as he was screaming and running a temp. She said he had a loose bm on the potty while the bath water was running, then she put him in the tub with a little warm water and a tub pillow and he immediately laid down on his tummy, head on the pillow and went to sleep. The water was a little warmer than room temp, but it brought his fever down. So...she ended up hanging out by the side of the tub changing out warm towels to lay on him and keep him warm for about 20 minutes. Then she got him out and he slept until about 9 this morning. I vibered with them for an hour (interrupting my writing this post) and they are both tired this morning, but Joaquin woke up happier, still running a temp, but hopefully the stomach bug is on it's way out of his system. So hard to be so far away when they are sick and when daughter is exhausted. Too far to pop over to help so she can rest. I have to admit, I worry more about her with this pregnancy; remembering how tired I was when I was pregnant with Colin and when she was four. Hard to do it all.
Signing off now, so that I can get some planning for daycare done. Love and hugs to those who need/want them! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)9 -

Happy Sunday, ladies! It's going to be a great day!
Have a pot roast going in the crockpot with potatoes and carrots. I prefer to do it in the oven, but don't want to heat up the kitchen this afternoon. I bought a new crockpot several years back, it's more deep and wide than my 30 year old one, lol. Lots of room for everything. Basic model, no timers, just warm/hot/low. The 30 year old one is on its last legs I think - gets TOO hot. Katla, I think you had a problem with a crockpot/fire situation? I think the new ones are a lot safer.
I don't eat a lot of meat it seems but we have been craving pot roast so now we'll get to eat it all week.
Kelly - I can't remember, when is Lauren's baby due? Were you planning to head down there then?
Katla - I think you have a pretty perfect spot there by the river.
Just got in from thinning apples..... this will go on for the next month or so. We only have 3 dwarf apple trees but they get so loaded with fruit the branches break, so thinning and putting supports up keeps them going. Gravenstein, Chehalis, and a later russet winter apple... Hudson's Golden Gem. All are good for drying and applesauce and even eating out of hand.
Margaret - so happy to hear your son is getting better and better.
Michelle - Rori - all of you pools.... I'm not much of a swimmer but I'm a bit jealous. No, a LOT jealous!
OK, back out to the garden - my current happy place.

It's dry this afternoon, having rained all morning, but for some reason I didn't feel like going out. I watched 24 Hours in A&E while rowing for half an hour and biking for half an hour. Calculate 375 bonus calories, which I'm trying hard not to eat into.
Then I started reading DDIL's book, The Imposter Cure. Found some resonances in chapters on Perfectionism and Natural Genius, and food for thought, but I'm still letting envy eat at me. I did take my 'new' laptop out of the box and plug it in, so that is something to be celebrated! At the moment I'm just trying to focus on getting my memoir done, so that's a help. I will just do my best. My very best.
Much love, Heather UK xxxxxxx

well it is almost 1 pm here.. and I woke at 4 am and got up had my cup of tea and then went and fed DFIL, didn't feel good and came home and crawled in bed and slept for almost 3 hrs.. feel a bit better now but not 100%
Tom is picking up an ice cream cake for DFIL and to share with the residents for dinnertime dessert.. the pureed residents wont get the crunchies in the middle
I was going to pick one up but Tom and Elena were going out so He will pick it up..
I had grand plans to do things today .. but have been a slug.. oh well everyone needs a day of rest.
I am within range of the garbage dumpster and it looks like they are putting lock on it, lol its because the raccoons have figured out how to get in there and it has a fence around it ..
Kelly - I have been looking but not going to had in my resignation until I have one in sight... very hard at my age even though they say there is no age discrimination.. there is... putting it in the lords Hands6 -
Heather - every word written is a triumph, and every sentence a victory.
Egg has decided that every time my husband gets out of the shower he must give her a "bath." Egg is our cat. So she starts yelling at him the MINUTE he turns off the water, until he uses wet hands to gently wet her fur, and then his towel to rub her down. Evidently I don't do it correctly, although I did try once or twice. I am a disappointment to my cat. I love my weird little family.

Kelly: You are a terrific mom, and long distance calls in the middle of your night earns extra points for your great mom meter. :flowerforyou:
Lanette: We never had a crockpot over-heat, or had a cord go bad. We had one that didn’t heat enough & failed to get food hot enough. Everyone who ate the stew got sick. We replaced it at the first opportunity. That was our most horrible kitchen disaster. Seven people were sick including both of us, our son and DDIL and his best friend’s whole family. It was beyond awful. On another topic, we love our spot by the river and are happy here. I’m very lucky that my friend lets me ride her horse.
(((Heather))) Envy sucks the joy from life. From my POV, you are being too hard on yourself. You are brilliant and full of energy. You are a published author & I admire you.
Lisa: I had a half Siamese cat who loved the water. Back in the day DH thought he’d prove me a liar by dumping her in the bathtub with me. She sat down and started to purr. The cat & I decided to let him live. He’d already embarrassed himself.
We’re having a quiet day at home today. I would like to put some fun into it, but so far DH isn’t feeling well enough to have fun.

Hello dear friends, we met kids and most of grands for breakfast this morning. It was nice.
We had to hurry home as we had heavy rain and wind storm during the night. This morning we saw one of the huge pecan trees had split almost in half and landed on neighbors/best friends carport. Carport demolished but I don't think much damage to her car. Jack is still helping with clean up so Im not sure. Our neighbors on the other side had a large limb break from their Bradford pear tree and land on their daughters jeep and a section of 6' wood fence blown down. No wind today, but about to rain again.
Today is my oldest grandsons first wedding anniversary, hard to believe its been a year.
Love you my friends
