WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR JUNE 2019

Morning, afternoon and evening, all,
Just in my happy place this morning, and the house Internet is working, so happier than yesterday at the same time.
Corey didn't want to go out last night for his 50th birthday (he is not fond of ambient noise, hates crowds, and once it gets past 6 p.m., every restaurant is crowded) so we'll go out tonight, but earlier. We were talking last night about aging and what's changed about us. His comment was that the older folks who eat at 4:30 p.m. are the smart ones, as they avoid the noise and the hustle-bustle of the crowds. But then, neither one of us was ever fond of the bar/nightclub/crowded restaurant thing after we got past our early 20s. My exception was a stretch of my 40s, when I lived close to a number of my family members, and we went out to sing a lot. Even then, I was always the designated adult.
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR
I went through a little bit of the bar/nightclub/crowded restaurant thing when my first husband and I split up. I was 20 when we married, and he was never into any of that stuff, so in my early 30s I went through a very brief phase.
But for years my idea of a perfect weekend evening has been peace and quiet at home. Especially lately when I've been so busy. I can't wait to get home on a Friday night, put on my comfy clothes, hope that there's something interesting on TV (lately Fridays have been duds) or put on a movie, and get settled in front of my computer to work on whatever my next project is ... or maybe even not to do much of anything at all.
If we do go out to a restaurant, we also go earlier. Here, people eat late. Many restaurants don't open until 5:30 or 6 pm, and by 8 pm, they're chockers. So if we get in by about 6:15 pm, we're good. We pretty much have the place to ourselves.

Machka: You are surrounded by beauty. I love today’s photos.
Lisa: I link “old” with infirmity, inactivity & lethargy. All of those things are at least partially under our own control. Making healthy choices is important in my opinion, and can lead to being heathier, feeling better and happier. I will turn 70 on my next birthday. I don’t feel old at all. :flowerforyou:
Karen in VA: Beautiful flowers!
Lanette: The CBD oil is working well for my dog. We buy it at a pet store in the next town. DH has taken some, too, shortly after his physical therapy. It helped him feel a bit better. Thanks for the link to the physicaltherapyadvisor.com. I’ll be sharing it with DH. :flowerforyou:

Old/age- Mainly for Lisa- I think about being old, getting old a lot. I have since I lost my parents so many years ago. For many years, as their child, I always thought of them as old; it all changed when they died. I was 26, my mom was 58 and my dad was 63. The died within 6 months of each other. As I have gotten older (age-wise) I have never really felt old. BUT...I remember a turning point when I was in my mid thirties and my daughter (then about 14) and I were walking on the boardwalk and we heard some wolf whistles and talk behind us; I turned to see who was doing the talking (it was some guys on a boat) and one of them said "Not you, mama; that pretty girl you're walking with!" lol That was the first time I realized that I was "old". Lauren was disgusted bc they were closer to my age than her age, and I was jealous of her youth. (I got over it). Anyway, I think "old" is a point of view. A perception. My husband has been old since he was 18. I get older, but I still feel young. I think of you ladies, as "my age". You have young hearts and minds. Yup, some days I wake up and am positive my body is creaking, audibly. But then I have days when I jump out of bed and am able to accomplish everything I had planned for the day and then some. I still want to go skydiving. I still want to hike the Appalachian trail. I still want to take a summer (a year would be even better) and travel. I like to see bright colored hair. I want another (bigger) tattoo. I still want a dog. I am really enjoying my job with all of the kids, so I am happy I will be able to do it for 10-20 more years. KJ7

I’ve read a lot of talk about age here and other places. My dad dropped dead in the shower of a heart attack at age 62. He had refused to see a doctor for many years, had uncontrolled high blood pressure, and was an alcoholic. My mom is incredibly active at 80. She was still working until her stroke 4 months ago. She has clearance to return to work. She is dabbling in her flower beds. Yesterday she went to Lexington with my nephew and me. She intends to keep moving until she can’t.
I will be 55 in August. Except for occasional sore knees, I don’t feel 55. I’m sure part of this is because I opted to wait until I was 40 to start a family. It amazes me how many places offer senior discounts starting at 50 or 55. I’m more than willing to take the discount, but daughter gets embarrassed by it. Luckily, my gray hairs blend with my blonde so most people don’t refer to me as “Hannah’s grandma”.
Machka - those photos are amazing!!

I remember being a young girl thinking I would be old when we hit the year 2000. I was 31 at that time. Now I look at it completely differently. My Dad passed just before his 70th birthday and I think of him as too young. My grandmothers were long lived.
Like Machka, I think I have another 20 years or so of work ahead of me. So I guess I’m looking at 70 being equivalent of 50.
My husband doesn’t take care of himself, refuses to see a doctor or do anything to help his health. I fear I will be widowed young.

I don't really know when one gets officially 'old' . Is it when you start drawing your Old Age Pension? I think that's around 66/67 at the moment.
I was lucky enough to get my State Pension at 60 (it's gradually getting older and older). I retired from paid work at 55 . My life since then, (apart from the breast cancer ) has been better than ever. I am happier, fitter, slimmer, and enjoy life so much more. This is the best time of my life. I will be 70 in October.
I hope I will continue to be fit and well. The return of the cancer (after 12 years) is my biggest worry. I hope it never happens. I continue to do everything I can to stay healthy.
When I was 62 I felt 85. Fat. Unfit. Now I am 69 I feel 45. True.
I did some tests for my biological age. It was 47. Yes, I work hard at it. Yes, I often wish I didn't have to work so hard, but it's worth it.
Our health is a lottery and some people, however careful they are, lose, though no fault of their own. All we can do is load the odds in our favour.
Never underestimate how good exercise can make you feel. It is life transforming.

IT TOOK A POST FROM a friend on Facebook TO REMIND ME IT'S OUR ANNIVERSARY and now this.... probably I think of our anniversary as 9/16/96, when we met, not when we got married...... my best friend is working today. so I'll c him when he gets home. 17 years today9

tracey in Edmonton! What terrific news! I’m so glad your search is over and they are willing to accommodate your wedding schedule somewhat. I hope you aren’t too exhausted to enjoy the wedding, your guests, and summer - when it finally arrives.
We are getting similar weather here. My heater is on also. However, I’m having a bit of an adventure today. My daughter and I are going bicycling on a side by side adaptive bicycle where I can actively help peddle as much as I’m able. A bicycle would be a great tool for me, but I want to be sure of my abilities first.
Rebecca, You don’t look nearly put-upon with that duty! Holding a warm snuggly anything is a pleasure, but holding a baby human is heavenly.
Lisa in AR, glad you’re home, and perhaps a bit of the slow lane is what we all need from time to time.
Janetr OKC, many hugs for you, and thoughts for your sister and your friend. Sepsis can be deadly. I lost a BIL to that two years ago. Glad they caught it early!

Pip . Happy Anniversary!!!
Lanette Glad the picture of our flowers cheered you. My grandson is off for the summer. I recommended that he continue writing and working on math this summer but he wasn't interested. Hopefully he will read. He got all A's and did well on SOLs and iReady tests, so he is in a good place to start back up in the fall.
Here's a sweet story from CBS Sunday Morning. Have a tissue ready!

Renee, i have hada weight loss surgery, and have lost a total so far of 80 lbs. I lost 39 before the surgery with the help of their dietician, going from 262.2 to 233 before my surgery January 2 of this year. Today I am 180.2, with a goal of 130-145, depending on when I feel “done”. I know it will never truly be “done”, since for people like me, even with my new tiny stomach, I’ll always need to be careful. So far I’m establishing healthy eating habits, like eating plenty of protein, and healthy veggies. I go very easy on potatoes and rice. Sweet potatoes are my usual now and very little brown rice. I love quinoa and ancient grains of all sorts. Funny fact. Scientists have now determined that Washingtonians smoke more cannabis than folks in Amsterdam. I know your city is different. What is unique about where you are living?
Sharon Near Seattle1 -
Machka: I turn 70 next month. I don’t feel old. Why should you? I’m guessing you’re much more fit than the vast majority of people who consider themselves athletes. :flowerforyou:
Lisa: I broke both of my wrists in separate falls on unseen black ice, a few years apart. Both wrists are doing fine, as is my overall bone density. I take alondrate weekly for the bone density. Weight bearing exercise is one of the things that leads to strong bones. That includes walking, dancing, yoga, and many other things. My sister in law and brother in law are quite a bit older than me. He’s past ninety and she is past 80. Both go to the gym regularly to stay strong. :flowerforyou:
Karen: Your grandson is so lucky to have you in his life!!! I love the CBS Sunday story you shared.
Heading up stairs to hang out with DH unless he irritates me again. :grumble:

Morning, afternoon and evening, all,

My exception was a stretch of my 40s, when I lived close to a number of my family members, and we went out to sing a lot. Even then, I was always the designated adult.
But it got me thinking... By every standard of our society, when I turn 60 next year, I will officially move into the category of "old." (No offense meant to those who already are 60-plus--it's not a bad thing, it's just a thing.) My husband may be nine years younger physically, but our maturity and thought levels are at the same space 99% of the time, so he's the perfect partner for me. I know this, because my ex-husband was five years older than I was physically, and already speaking longingly of assisted living facilities when he was in his 40s. Not a good fit for me.
I don't have any conclusion to this... just thinking about what "old" means, and how I fit within that span. I'm certainly not young, and OK with that. Just not sure that I know what "old" means for me. And my stated philosophy for years has always been "labels are for pickle jars, not people," so there's that.
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR
I just turned 60 and around my area and circle of friends 60 is not yet considered “old” around here “70+” is thought of as “old”2 -

Karen love Steve Hartman stories. He originally did these stories here in the Twin Cities before moving to the national stage. Always good to see him. His stories seems to always make things better.2

Did Cathe Friedrich’s Lower Body Pyramid DVD today. The plan for tomorrow is to do some balance games on the Wii
Bananas – I love reading your “updates”.
About this group: I really like that I can vent and get good advice but no one judges you. Also, the hints from other people are fantastic.
Speaking of hints: has anyone used a silicon egg poaching cup? What did you think?
Lisa – Jess likes to go out to dinner late. At this point in our lives, having dinner late means it just sits on our stomachs. It’s really interesting to see how our bodies change as we get older. When I was in my 30’s, I could handle having pizza and wine at 9:00. Not now.
As far as “old” – there’s a lady on our bowling league, she’s 93 (by now maybe 94). She drives herself to bowling twice/week. Admitted, she isn’t fast. But she’s there. Vince feels “old” but I don’t. To think that pretty soon I’ll be going on Medicare. Doesn’t seem possible. I don’t lie about my age, I just don’t announce it.
Gardening – I’m very religious – if God means for it to live, it’ll live.
Lanette – what exercises for your hamstrings did your doc give you? I have such tight hamstrings, even tho I stretch them daily, it isn’t even funny. I didn’t see anything in that article about stretching hamstrings. Maybe I missed it.
JR I’ve asked Jess to buy me these small (about 8oz) cartons of almond milk. They come in a pkg of 4. What I like about them is they’re only something like 30 calories but they don’t require refrigeration so they’re good to take on a car trip. Have you ever tried the Chilly Cow ice cream pops? Yesterday a friend gave me a real good idea. Why not take one of those silicon mats that you use when you make cookies and cut it to the size of a cake pan? I never thought of that. Would certainly save on parchment paper and/or spray oil
Pip – happy anniversary
Welcome everyone new
Katla – you’ve been taking aldronate for quite some time. Have a question for you. I think I may have thrown out one of the pills by accident. Fortunately, I switched from getting the prescription filled at WalMart to Aetna home delivery. WalMart wouldn’t have filled it until the 23rd, so I wouldn’t have had any to take tomorrow. I did have some from Aetna. Here is my question for you: do you know of any way that I can get an extra two pills. Do you know if the MD has samples?
Usually when I go over on calories, it’s not by much. I’m lucky in that regard. Tonight I did find that eating less meat is having less calories
Was in the pool but it started thundering. Wish I’d gone in earlier today when the sun was out.
Lector at the church tonight.

Michele NC - When I buy shelf milk I grab vanilla soy from silk didn’t know about the almond milk one I’ll keep my eye open. We buy from SamsClub so usually grab refrigerator one there in a big box or at Walmart a quick grab lasts us months.
Still haven’t had chilly cow they only had skinny cow again! We did see 3 chilly cow but they were 350+ calorie ones! I know that chilly cow has less calorie ones I checked their website! At Sams Club grabbed 18 for $9 Healthy Choice fudge pops 100calories each their huge. Walmart $3.40 skinny cow 100calories sandwich, with coupons got Halo 😇 top 2 flavors 50&60cal their small bars plus Mexican Paletas 40 cal y fudge ones 40cal sugarfree popsicle brand. Our grocery stores here get hit hard by tourists, military personnel, families from neighboring towns etc so we couldn’t find the popchips we wanted to try either. I got myself a soup treat but they only had the on the go containers sold out of the can! So bought only 1. Sometimes I buy grocery online have it shipped to the house since it’s there but not in store for JR he’s a picky eater.
We found 0 cal Pam cooking spray so using it but other times nothing. Margarine a tab if needed for a recipe. I’ve never figured out those silicon stuff Daughter told me about it but I couldn’t figure it out she bought me a silicone candy mold.

Michele: I have no idea whether you can get alondrate directly from your doctor. It wouldn’t hurt to ask & they may have a sample. The RX is very inexpensive. There are two versions, one is daily and the other is weekly. I prefer the weekly version because I only have to wait half an hour after taking the pill & water before coffee or breakfast once a week rather than every day.
Kate UK: You look fabulous, & you both look happy.
The weather is a bit cool today and I’m having a challenge staying warm enough.

Kate - that photo of you and your husband is just adorable! Two cuties. I don't think I've ever seen a photo of you with such a big smile like that.
Pip - Wishing a Happy Anniversary to you and Kirby and many, many more. Learning about your strength and resilience with all you've been through in your life has been such an inspiration. Some guardian angel had been looking out for you and I think he materialized as Kirby, don't you think? You two remind me of newlyweds, lol. Maybe you two are the reason "get a room" was coined, lol.
Michele - here's the "Hamstring Rehabilitation" from that website. Some of these are what I'm using: https://www.thephysicaltherapyadvisor.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Hamstring-Rehabilitation-Exercises.pdf So nice to do squats again without getting a big old pain searing through my.... sit bones, lol. That piriformis stretch helps a lot... who would have thought? I need to put some air in my exercise ball and work it in as well.
You'll find these on the "Resource Guide" page about halfway down. They have some for Morton's neuroma too... I don't have that but the podiatrist said my foot is close to it, so why not try to head any more damage off at the pass?

I'm returning to MFP after a few months and saw this thread.
Barbie - thank you for getting the thread started!
My Successes:- Dietary changes enabling maintenance of 75 lb weight loss, wt loss achieved over 10 year period. I eat a balance of protein (30-35%), fats (40-45%), and carbs (25-30%), and concentrate on eating more 'whole foods' avoiding refined sugars, white flour, and alcohol.
- Regular 3x HIIT workouts for 2.5 years. I found a great personal trainer who is an inspiration (he truly "walks the talk"), he keeps me motivated and coming back.
- Aim to build movement into every day, I walk when I can, and took on additional part-time work that keeps me moving more of the day and brings in extra cash
- Regular tracking of food in MFP. I've realized tracking is essential for me to lose weight. I can maintain without tracking, but I don't lose.
- Get back to intermittent fasting 3-5 days per week. I still eat the same amount of calories, but IF for health - body gets a break to engage in autophagy and enhances growth hormone secretion. I feel better, and I tend to make better food choices when I am eating; and after fasting 16-20 hours, the food tastes amazing!
- Start drinking Bone Broth regularly, when I break the fast. Like IF, I plan to drink bone broth for the health benefits - digestive, joints, skin.

Happy Anniversary Pip. Enjoy your day. You both look great.
Kate- lovely picture of you and your husband.
Speaking of “old”. When I had my yearly physical a few weeks ago my internist said, “oh you will be having the big 80 birthday this year”. I ask him if that is when everything breaks down. He told me age is a lot about attitude. If you stay active and go out and do things you stay young. If you sit on the couch and watch tv all day you get old. He said just keep doing what you are doing. Some of my college friends have turned 80 but none of them feel old. Soooo, old age is all in your head. I play golf with a lady who is 95. She is beautiful inside and out.
Happy Saturday.
