I did a heart rate calculator and according to my age it should be between 81 and 126. I did stay on the elliptical for 5 minutes today and on the treadmill for 5 minutes. Lisa ~ thanks for the advice on using the arm movements intermittently...I will try that.

A lot of those formulas are just based on averages. Each of us is different.
That 220-age one they used to use would put my max HR at 168 and then I'm supposedly not supposed to go over 80% of that which is 134.4.
I get to 134 walking briskly and I'm regularly in the 140-150 range cycling relatively casually. Put me on a hill and I'm up to 180 ... which is well over my calculated max.
If the only thing holding you back from doing 10 minutes on the elliptical is your HR ... and your Dr says it is OK!! ... I'd suggest just going for the 10 minutes and seeing how you feel.
But make sure your Dr is OK with it first.

Super fun day today. We drove to the KY Aviation Museum in Lexington to see a World War 2 plane that flew in European battles. I took my nephew and my mom. My daughter stayed home. Decided we are going to take some sort of short trip most Fridays this summer. We had such a great time!!

Tracy- so excited for you and glad they can work around the wedding.
Kim in CA - great job. It never ceases to amaze me how wise the women in this group are and how willing they are to help with so many different situations.
Janetr- so sorry for all your sad news.
My baby puppy is busy, busy, busy. Good news is he sleeps from 9:30 to 5:30. DH gets up at 5:30 so that works lol.
I have been missing Meg too.

Saturday is a non writing day, so I will be reading the newspaper and washing my hair instead.
It's going to be lovely weather for a change. I've planned to make pork and cider stew, so that's not very summery, but it's not a heatwave yet!
Rebecca - I use my Instant Pot almost every day for something. Today will be the stew. Sometimes it's just a few new potatoes, or a few eggs. I make yoghurt regularly. One big advantage for me is I don't have to watch it. I love the keep warm function. But there is a steep learning curve. One way to learn is to watch videos on YouTube. There is an app also and many great sites devoted to it. When I first got it the learning was a full time job. Initially I got a lot of hints from the original Facebook site. There are now several different sites, keto, slimming diets, etc etc. You can do some amazing things with it. I save the recipes I like by bookmarking them on Google.
We are looking forward to having Max tomorrow. DH has been preparing by printing out some board game squares templates. He intends to invent a board game with him. I have prepared by buying cheesy rolls for lunch. Perhaps we could picnic in the garden.
The light outside is Mediterranean. Clear. Brilliant. Gorgeous. About to take DH up his morning cup of tea. I've been awake since 5 am. Don't really mind, it's so lovely.

@1948Peachy I was thinking the same thing about not using the arms, also you could slow down the speed to lower heart rate. I would guess that the added arm movements are increasing the heart rate.1

@JRsLateInLifeMom that restaurant has a nice spirit.there's an alternative place near me with a chalk board where you can pay forward.when buying a coffee you can decide if you want to buy a coffee or meal for a future person who needs one, and if someone comes later without means he or she can ask for a one of those pre-paid coffees or meals.3

I usually weigh myself daily but not these past few days. I've gone considerably over these past few days.
this time it's more because I'm in a good mood than bad.
This week I
1) finished and sent off the 100 pages
2) finished sending something to the new better lawyer (I had to comment the file so he could see where we were at)
3) found out that we progressed in a major way on a union thing I've been working on for 3 years. I have not been working alone by any means but I was without a doubt the main person working on it.
4) minor, I spoke to another senior thesis director and he said he'd give me his thoughts on my thesis plan and thesis question since my teacher is not helping me at all. he was sympathetic and surprised when I told him that my teacher was inviting most/all the other students under her to speak and publish, and said he would give pay attention to making sure things that he could work on were more public.
5) another thesis director (in charge of bachelor's classes) said she'd give me a class to teach if something in my area came up, that the permanent or on-contract teachers couldn't teach.
6) I knew my candidacy was refused for a broad qualification process but had no information as to why. the note said I don't have adequate teaching experience. (but would indicate that my research and other experience and qualifications are sufficient). I have masses of teaching experience, that is what I do and have done for 30 + years, but not specifically in the very specialised area, so, presumably they didn't consider the notion of transferable skills. (if I am skilled in an area, and I am skilled in teaching another area, it's quite conceivable I can be skilled in teaching in the other area). I'll get more detailed info I about 3 weeks, they say. what it means is that I either need to get a class or two in this area, and/OR be able to better explain my thoughts about my teaching project, both are surmountable goals.3 -

I just have to distance myself from my SIL she just likes to egg me on..i got a letter from probate court that our attorney is trying to get my brother more of a settlement which is great..but she is now arguing with me about why Sean had to pay the retainer... he didn't he sold some of my dads things to pay for it, not like he used Jeans money and he has none of his own..
Really, this is petty stuff, told her I don't want money to come between Sean and I , and she just keeps pushing so I just dropped the subject and will go to work,,6 -

Janet- So sorry to hear of your bad news! SEnding thoughts/prayers of healing, strength, courage and skilled physicians to you! Take what you need!
Rebecca- I don't have an INstant Pot; but I have a Black and Decker brand pressure cooker. lol It looks and works the same as the INstant Pot. I use mine every week to make yogurt. Then I also use it for potatoes and other veg, mainly. (So fast). I don't use it for meat too much. I find that when I am making a meal with meat, most times it takes me less time to put it in the oven or in a pan to cook than it does for the IP to do it's thing. Plus, if it is a full on dinner, I just get everything cooking at the same time on the stove and it's done. BUT...the IP is good for when I need to cook AND do something else. Just put everything in and let it go. Then I can finish cleaning, laundry, etc.
Renee- I am one of those that needs to lose about 80 pounds. I love this group of ladies! They keep me honest with myself and help me see that weight loss is also a exercise of your mind/mindset. Your brain/mindset has an awful lot to do with how successful you are at creating/maintaining a healthy lifestyle!!
I just realized it has been over a year since I have worked out to the point that my muscles were sore. I think I need to push myself harder....
Trentin today. He arrives at 10am, so I am going to try to get out this morning and get my shopping done BEFORE he gets here, so that we can spend the day at a park or hiking somewhere. ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)6 -

Morning, afternoon and evening, all,
Just in my happy place this morning, and the house Internet is working, so happier than yesterday at the same time.
Corey didn't want to go out last night for his 50th birthday (he is not fond of ambient noise, hates crowds, and once it gets past 6 p.m., every restaurant is crowded) so we'll go out tonight, but earlier. We were talking last night about aging and what's changed about us. His comment was that the older folks who eat at 4:30 p.m. are the smart ones, as they avoid the noise and the hustle-bustle of the crowds. But then, neither one of us was ever fond of the bar/nightclub/crowded restaurant thing after we got past our early 20s. My exception was a stretch of my 40s, when I lived close to a number of my family members, and we went out to sing a lot. Even then, I was always the designated adult.
But it got me thinking... By every standard of our society, when I turn 60 next year, I will officially move into the category of "old." (No offense meant to those who already are 60-plus--it's not a bad thing, it's just a thing.) My husband may be nine years younger physically, but our maturity and thought levels are at the same space 99% of the time, so he's the perfect partner for me. I know this, because my ex-husband was five years older than I was physically, and already speaking longingly of assisted living facilities when he was in his 40s. Not a good fit for me.
I don't have any conclusion to this... just thinking about what "old" means, and how I fit within that span. I'm certainly not young, and OK with that. Just not sure that I know what "old" means for me. And my stated philosophy for years has always been "labels are for pickle jars, not people," so there's that.
Love y'all,

My husband is 12 years older than me (11.6 years). I'm 52 and he's turning 64 shortly.
Right now, things are different because of his accident in March 2018, but a couple weeks before the accident was my 51st birthday weekend. He was 62 then. For my birthday weekend, we both went to northern Tasmania where we both cycled a 300 km randonnee (that's 300 kilometres in 20 hours or less, including all breaks) and completed it in 18 hours and 18 minutes. The next night we went out the Speedway where we spent several hours watching racing vehicles.
Given that we could both cycle 300 km and then enjoy the Speedway on that weekend, I didn't consider him "old" at all!! Once he turned 60, he would comment now and then that he felt old, but I certainly didn't consider him old, and let him know that.
Maybe it's because I know a lot of healthy and active older people. My grandmother who passed away in January lived to 97 years old and was quite active until she was about 95 or so. Other grandparents lived into their late 80s/early 90s too. My parents are 78 but I still think of them as fairly young ... my father is still out there cycling, although not as much as he did in his 60s and early 70s.
The average age in the long distance cyclist community was 49 at one point, and I've heard that hasn't changed much. There will be people heading to France in August to cycle the famous Paris-Brest-Paris 1200 km randonnee (1200 km in 90 hours or less, including all breaks) ranging in age from their 20s to 80s. BTW - my husband and I met on the 2003 Paris-Brest-Paris. I was 36 ... he was 48.
When my husband had his accident and was in ICU in the coma, nurses and doctors kept coming by and saying to me reassuringly, "He's got his age going for him. He's still quite young." I have to admit, I did think, "Do you know how old he is ... he's 62!"
But I guess what I'm saying is that it depends on your society.
When you say, "By every standard of our society, when I turn 60 next year, I will officially move into the category of "old."" ... I say, not necessarily. I've found myself in a society where 60 is "still quite young" ... among my family, my fellow cyclists, and the medical community.
I guess I think of "old" as 80.
And I have a feeling it's going to be a shock when my parents turn 80.
Enjoy your youth! You've still got 20 years of it to go!
Machka in Oz
PS. All this is why I'm pursuing my Master's degree at the age of 52. I figure I've got a minimum of 20 years of work left ... nevermind what odd jobs I might have to pick up after that.

Hubby and I are meeting my granddaughter and her husband for dinner tonight. I already have my order planned out, they have a great fresh grilled catfish filet, add an order of fresh steamed veges and voila there's dinner. Like Lisa we will go early evening/late afternoon to beat the crowds. Not to mention the fact that tornado storms are predicted to kick up around 6:00 pm. Should be safely home before it goes crazy.
No change in my sister, she's still in ICU and pretty confused. Thank you ladies for your prayers and good thoughts.
Love you my friends

Karen in VA - thank you for that beautiful photo this morning. What a wonderful thing to see as I am sipping coffee and waking up this morning! We are "letting nature take over" our flowerbeds, lol. Does your grandson get a summer break from school? You probably mentioned and I skipped it. By the way, hope things have settled down at your workplace and you'll be able to ease into retirement without a lot of heartburn.
Lisa - getting older has been on my mind a lot lately, aggravated that I don't recover from injuries overnight like I used to even ten years ago. I've decided to focus on what is still working correctly in this body of mine. You are right, there's plenty to be grateful for.
I ran into an acquaintance, Jane, at the doc's office this past week who I hadn't seen in several years. She's near 80 - was a bit more bent over and frail than when I saw her last, wearing a knee brace and she spoke with the receptionist at length about ordering more of the medicines she was taking. She sat with me a few minutes and we chatted, she told me of her various ailments - THEN quickly smiled and laughed and talked up all of the things she was able to still do. She made my day. We might not be able to do all the things we used to do physically, but we can always serve as an inspiration to others.
You ladies on this list do that and that's why it's such a neat group.
Heather - so glad you are having a good weather to get your running done.
Katla - I am so tickled the CBD is working for your pup!
Sharon - I stopped in the local cannabis shop and they didn't have the brand of oil you recommended but it looks like they have something similar. I'll pick up a tube this week. By the way, I hadn't heard of the seat cushion you recommended but it looks great. I got a thick foam cushion off Amazon that does the trick - my recliner sits too low so needed a bit of a boost to get my knees into alignment with my tush and this seems to be doing the trick.
My doc gave me several pages of exercises for hamstring stretches. Turns out the one I'd been doing before was an advanced one (something that's super easy for someone in their 30's) but too much for someone like me in her late 60's, so no wonder my sit bones were complaining. I've been doing the easy ones and everything is much better.
Here's the website she pulled the exercises from: https://www.thephysicaltherapyadvisor.com/ It's pretty neat, seems to have a lot of articles about healthy aging. Looking forward to a few hours this weekend of reviewing his stuff. If my doc recommends this guy, he must know what he's talking about.
OK ladies, I better get crackin'. Make it a FABULOUS weekend!

New Foods I’ve switched to is numerous were getting healthier one way or another. Making the permanent change for the whole family so we grab healthier snacks to cooking recipes can lower them. Spent all night with hubby isle by isle looking for things we can change .Low cal teas to sweetnlow even checked out stuff to try later even.

Awhile back a woman brought cake to line dance class to celebrate her 80th birthday. Several women in the front row said things like "80 years old--that's nothing." Many of the men and women I dance with are years older than I am and their presence reminds me that I still have a lot of living to do.
My mother lied about her age starting long before I was born. Her mother did the same thing. It never made sense to me.

Machka, Barbie - thank you for your viewpoints, it helps my perspective. And Barbie, much like you, I have never lied about my age. Never understood why anyone did.
I think part of what drove my musings on the subject is my best friend's mother - who just fell and broke her shoulder a few days ago. She is in her mid-80s, and this is her fifth broken joint in the last ten years. Both shoulders, one hip (which she subsequently had replaced) and both wrists. Each repair is harder and harder on her, and she heals slower and slower... and my friend is getting more and more worried. She broke the shoulder while recovering from a surgery less than a month ago to repair the muscles in her stomach that were left screwed up from yet another surgery. It is a grim look at a possible future that I truly want to avoid...
Ah well, it's a beautiful Saturday, and there are things to accomplish this morning. Enough navel gazing for one day.
Love y'all!
