Nana_Anne – caring for others can take a toll on is. Taking care of ourselves is essential. The hard times always seem to come in groups. One step at a time.
Souchie – welcome! There are some wonderful ladies on here, and it seems people are at different places regarding weight loss. The nicest part is that we are at similar life stages.
TucsonJane -I know what you mean about lumpy/bumpy. I thought at my age (64) that wouldn’t improve regardless of weight. Glad to say, I am noticing a difference.
Carleecat1221 -desk job and not being 25 anymore are my biggest challenges.
Scale good to me this am- hit 145, my first goal. Since I did maintenance for a couple of weeks earlier this month while on vacation, I set new goal of 140. It only makes a 20 calorie difference, so it is worth the try. Will keep activity the same because it is doable for me. While my body definitely feels and looks better, mid section is not comfortable. Since the 17 since March came off at about .6 a week average, there is still some body fat there I can live without. And if it is too much of a struggle, I can stay right where I am. See my internist next month so we will see what blood numbers are and get his thoughts on weight. He is really a very thorough doc so I value his opinion.
Have a good Monday all.

Pilates this morning ... we're focusing on my triceps, shoulders and hamstrings!!
An hour of walking ... half outside, half inside.
And just 4 flights of stairs.

Morning, afternoon and evening, all,
Ahhh, the husband's back, and I slept like a baby last night, even right through his alarm. Back into our normal routine... until Friday, when I go to Little Rock for the Annual Conference.
Barbara AHMOD, good to see you posting!
Michele, I did use Chantix to successfully stop smoking. It's been almost three years now. Many people have side effects from it they're uncomfortable with, but the two most prevalent ones, nausea and nightmares were, for me, fairly minor. There was nausea within five minutes of taking the pill, but pinpoint, and quite short-term, and my dreams were just incredibly vivid, but not nightmarish. My husband, on the other hand, simply quit smoking when I did, without any medical assistance. He's a tougher man than I am.
For those asking for folks to friend you, to save you some energy, I don't friend folks on this site (or actually, any other sites anymore, except LinkedIn for professional contacts). This thread is where I interact, and there's a tremendous amount of insight and input here that's at exactly the level where I'm comfortable and happy. Our amazing Barbiecat re-starts this thread every month, so there's a clean slate for everyone to come to, add their goals, tell us how they did the previous month, and connect and reconnect. Some of us have been here for years, some for months or days. All are welcome, as Barbie says in the intro.
A thought process on work and multi-tasking and weight loss - read at your own risk.Finished the first drafty-draft of the big grant I'm working on, so I was able to get my mind off it for the entire weekend, which was kinda awesome. Back down to reality with a bump this morning, a couple of small grant applications due by end of month that I need to get done.
Had time to think about a lot of things this weekend... and there's a lot of evidence out there that multi-tasking is a myth, but I've known for a long time that I don't actually multi-task well... I just mono-task quickly enough that it gives the illusion that I'm doing more than one thing at a time. If I separate each grant into tasks by draft stages, I can shift from one to the next without so much down time in between, as I have less adjustment time. The first one is truly gone from my thoughts, as I'm finished at that point. Don't know that this is useful to anyone but me, but I actually took it from a shrink's advice that it's how men look at tasks and accomplishments.
I actually asked him why, when my (now-ex) husband put laundry in the washer, he simply stopped there. The psychiatrist asked me, "Did you ask him to wash the clothes?" I said, "Yes," and he said, "Then that's what he did. If you want him to wash them, dry them, and put them away, then you'll have to ask it that way. Men tend to compartmentalize each task as a separate job. Women see things more as a whole." It wasn't that simple a conversation, I'm paraphrasing, but that was the upshot.
Anyway, when you take that and you apply it to weight loss and exercise, you can see that, for us, it's a whole. Changing our eating habits, starting or re-starting or continuing exercise, and losing weight are a continuum, not separate, but all part of one goal, to get healthy.
It can be quite daunting.
But, if we can break it up into becoming habitual at each thing separately, conquer that, then move onto the next, while holding onto the first, it's not nearly so daunting. "I'm going to track what I eat," or "I'm going to get 30 minutes of exercise each day," is far less scary than "I'm going to track what I eat, keep my calories below 1,300, start exercising 30 minutes a day, and lose 50 pounds."
Just a thought. Could be wrong.
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR
Oh, and I see the gastroenterologist tomorrow morning for all the biopsy results from the tests earlier in the month.

Good morning, good morning! Happy Monday!
Welcome new ladies! Remember to bookmark our group, so that you can find us easily! (click on the empty star on the Title line; it will turn a solid color) We are a chatty group; but many of us have come to realize that weight loss/healthy choices depend as much (if not more) on a healthy mindset, as on willpower. My name is KJ (Kelly), I am 52 (will be 53 in November) I am 5'8 and currently weigh 230. I am a childcare provider and have six kids in my home (ages infant-age 4) M-F, and I have an 8 year old who is with me some evenings and weekends. Married 30 years, my own children are 32, 29, and 25. Our oldest (son) is on his own and lives in the same town, our second oldest (daughter) is married with a 2 1/2 yr old and one on the way and lives in Texas, our youngest (son) lives with us and works full time. I was always very thin (too thin?) as a child and young woman, and never developed healthy eating/exercise habits. At about age 35 the weight started sticking to me. Being on the tall side, it was easy to overlook the weight gain, as it very kindly distributed itself evenly on my body. But by age 45 I realized that I was fat. I was about 200 lb by then and would gain another 40 lbs before the weight would take its toll on my knees and ankles (which I am currently STILL having issues with). BUT...I am on my way back down the scale with the help of these ladies. They are a great group and I get many great ideas (the pound of veg per day) and advice and SUPPORT from them! Love them all to pieces
AND...my first little guy has arrived! It is my first day back after vacation, I am ready for a regular schedule, yet not ready! lol I better get busy! The theme for this week is Community Helpers. Let's see if we can make it through the week without a visit from any of them (police, fireman, doctor, etc) ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)

Lisa's Comment ~ "Men tend to compartmentalize each task as a separate job. Women see things more as a whole."
That was very thought provoking! I can totally see how that applies to my husband and myself.

Barbara AHMOD ... Hello! Always makes me happy to see your posts!
New Ladies ... Welcome! Following Kelly's lead ... I am 57 years old, married (35 years in August), two sons (32 year old who is physically disabled and 21 year old in school pursuing his dream in Nashville), and work part-time. Originally lost 80 pounds, then gained 44 back, recently lost 28 of the 44, need to lose 60 more. I'm hearing impaired (profoundly) trying to acclimate to hearing aides so I can get ready for a cochlear implant. It isn't going well. I am an intermittent faster. I fast at least 19 hours every day and then try to eat healthy in a 5 hour window. I have lost 28 pounds since the beginning of the year with this lifestyle change and love it. My main form of exercise is the treadmill and kettle bells.
Kelly ... I ate vegetables yesterday and my gut was so happy!! It was a great re-set to what I hope will be a successful week.
My oldest has now been in a "certified" housing arrangement for over three months and it has not been a good fit so far. Many, many issues that qualify as negligence. We are meeting with officials who operate the house this week. I am hoping they actually hear our concerns and make tangible efforts to remedy deficiencies. As communication has been poor thus far and that which we've received has been lip service, we shall see. In the meantime, I'm readying our house in the event our son needs to come home. Having lived independently for 8 years prior to this current arrangement and knowing his desired activity level, moving home is an emergency option only.
Beth near Buffalo ... where it is 62 degrees this morning! Yay!3 -
Happy Monday Ladies! Here's to a great week!!
Kelly - I dreamed about your haircut! The details are fading fast but I think I was there with you. Being with girlfriends & shopping or spa time is so very enjoyable and I haven't done that in years. So it was fun being with you, lol. I think the stylist took one look at my curly frizz and said "no hope". Sounds like a great time with Lauren and family, so glad you and Joaquin were able to spend time together.
Lisa - my hair used to be short as yours is in the photo you posted. Loved it, it was wash n wear. Out of the shower and it would dry on the way to work. These days I want it more like Carol's, a little fuller around my face. Draw attention away from my turkey neck. Lisa - great to have Corey home. Congrats on both of you for stopping the smoking!
Barbara AHMOD - so tickled to see you back here! All is well! We were getting concerned, you know. I've used the "dump garbage in receptacles around town" scheme before. When our fridge/freezer died a few years ago, I had a laundry basket full of stuff, mainly meat and fish and things I couldn't compost. So I stuffed everything in small bags and made an early morning trip to Walmart, the strip mall, you name it. I still do this during warm weather when I have shrimp or crab shells and no room for them in the big freezer until garbage pickup day. All of those plastic Walmart and Safeway sacks come in handy, lol. They still haven't banned them here.
Heather - I'm excited for you to attend your class reunion. When was the last one you attended? I missed mine which was this past Saturday, but folks are starting to post photos on Facebook. So far I've recognized everyone. I attended my 30th, this one was my 50th. We've lost many classmates since then. And I'd be anxious too trying to pack for a trip with company around, I don't do well with distractions like that. Good luck!
Welcome to the new folks here! Keep posting, keep reading. We talk about everything here it seems, avoiding politics and religion. Don't feel you have to respond to everyone, by the way.
That's it for now. Make it a fabulous day!
Lanette
Sunny & cool (48f) SW WA State - we'll probably see the mid 80's by late afternoon. I need to start watering a few things.0 -
Got a cryptic email today talking about translating a data submission into a tableau.
My first thought ... "Now I've got to explain my data in the form of interpretive dance??"
(Tableau Vivant)
But no, Tableau is a data visualisation tool.
Cold, windy, rainy ... with snow down to 500 metres ... tomorrow. And I've got quite a lot of walking to do outside.

Lisa - I quit smoking 10 years ago using Champix. I never had any side effects to it except everyone around me noticed how much happier I was. Turns out one of the active ingredients in it is the same as in an anti-depressant that worked well for me three years later when I needed it.
I don’t multitask as well now as I used to. I’ve read some studies saying that it’s not the best way to do things and your way is more efficient.
Ginny - you are doing so well! Hard work and dedication pays off!
I know there was more but I can’t remember.

Lisa what I notice in my DH is that for him to find something in the refrigerator it has to be right where he sees it. If it get buried in the back or is behind something he cannot find it.
Your other assessment is spot on. He loves to correct me too when I do not give him explicit enough directions. It used to drive me crazy. I have learned to ignore his comments or sometimes I do give him step by step instructions. The teacher in me helps with that too. You are sooo correct about the mutli-tasking.
If I have many things to keep track of at once I do talk to myself out loud to keep what I have to do straight. That is one of my clues that I have too much to do and need to prioritize.

TucsonJane wrote: »I'm 52 and just saw this group. I only really look sporadically at group posts, but I'd welcome friend requests from other ladies. I'm in Arizona, I work in a hospital lab, love tribal fusion belly dancing, have a husband, two grown kids (no grandkids), and three cats (maybe four very soon).
I started this on June 7 and I've lost 8 pounds so far. I'm motivated by a desire to have my clothes fit better, have smoother curves (as opposed to lumpy/bumpy), and have less pain in my back and knees. My tendency to obsess over numbers makes food logging an effective way to attain my goals! lol
I work in hospital lab too! Well, I did until I decide I wanted to teach in an MLT program. Congrats on the first 8 pounds and welcome to the group!!

For dessert, we go with these:
Nutrition Information
Servings per package: 10
Serving size: 64g
Nutrition Avg Qty Per Serving
Energy 396kJ
396 kJ is 94.6 calories.
I used to go with Skinny Cow, and will occasionally do that if they're on sale at a really good price, but these are nice and they go on sale with much more frequency than Skinny Cow products.

Instead of hot yoga I’m sitting at hot DMV, also known as waiting at the dmv with no ac to get the New York enhanced license! Or “sweating with the oldies” Oh joy, lucky me!
After that, Grocery shopping and clean up day around the house but will really focus on my closet, purging some old things. Last but most important, the gym for a cardio in glorious air conditioning

Hi ladies!
Our last funeral guests left this morning. I find myself unprepared for my diet today. No chicken thawed and no overnight oatmeal. It's harder to get back on the wagon than I thought. I ought to at least make my calorie limit today and then tomorrow go back to making protein and fiber minimums too. This is such a good program, it really helps me to know the fiber and protein. Otherwise I eat blindly and run out of calories but still hungry.3 -

Annie - 11monutes frozen chicken in the microwave on a plate with high sides or bowl defrosts it for cooking or put it in an ice bath for 20-30minutes on your counter longer if bigger piece. I got a 2yr old happens daily for me lol Oh yeah my sugar free pudding I forgot that 2 cups divided into 4servings rule so with unsweetened almond milk is 45calories per serving.
I had a box of skinny cow 🐄 but ate it all with Daughter y my Dad. The Halo 😇 brand wasn’t as great as hoped but their peanut butter ones a great treat was the only flavor I liked out of 3 types bought.
Hubby has the popsicle sugarfree fruit pops with fruit pieces in it 40calories instead of his usual Mexico Brand

Heather: You are gorgeous. Why would you try to disguise your pretty face?
Rori: We had chocolate & peanutbutter ice cream for National Ice-cream day.
Anne PNW: Welcome to a great group! :flowerforyou:
Souchi: Welcome to a great group. Join in and get to know people. Some of us have been here for quite a long time, met our own weight loss goals and stick around so that we don’t fall back into bad habits.
Barbara: Thanks for the healing thoughts for Arrow. He is doing just fine according to his owner. She has asked me to work with him. I’ll give it a shot this week. I have no brilliant ideas about keeping bears out of the garbage. We have curbside garbage service weekly. There are two cans, ordinary garbage and recyclable stuff. The recycle can is the larger one.
Machka: DDIL fell in love with pilates & became a certified pilates teacher. It has been great for her. I hope you are as pleased with your pilates experience as she has been. :flowerforyou:
Thanks to all of you for good birthday wishes. My son flew out for home yesterday. We had a great visit. Having him here was the best birthday gift and a complete surprise. We spent part of the day at a destruction derby at the fairgrounds. I used to watch them on TV with my dad, back in the black and white TV days. This is the only one I’ve ever seen in person. It was a nice treat to be there with our son.

Pip I was curious about who the hospital was named after (I didn't remember who "Virginia Mason" was) and found this:
Annie How did everything go at the funeral? Getting all your prep work done for tomorrow will help get you back on track. I've always wanted to try those overnight oats, they sound really good.

Happy Monday hot here today. Did exercise the a bit of deadheading in the garden. Lanette our tomatoes are not doing well this year DH puts it down to the cold spring we had. I found jeans on sale at Target. I needed to get some new ones for cooler weather. All the ones I owned are way too big now at size16/18. Well much to my surprise and delight, the ladies working the fitting rooms remembered me any excitement at fitting into a size 12 denim shorts. One of them has started the low fat high carb way of eating. Well, to make my day, I tried on a pair of 12 jeans which were big. The worker told me wait a minute I think you are an 8/9 now. I said no way, but she ran and got me a pair that size. My NSV was they fit perfectly! Another exciting day! I haven’t worn a 9 since my 20’s! I’m 63 now!
Now to fix my bowel issues.....
Me in the Target dressing room.

Kate Wow! Lovely.
Rita Congratulations!1 -
Kate, LOVE the dress! Maybe I need to learn to sew clothes, and not just quilts, because as reluctant as I am to wear dresses, I would wear that. Very retro.
Lisa in AR2 -
Kate UK - That dress would be perfect for the Swing Dance. Love retro.
Rita - You are rocking it!!!!!
Phew what a day!!! Started early with Bea and then on it went. Pushed her up to the school to fetch the bigger ones (in the heat) had to drag them away from the playground and then home to ice lollies and cooking chicken nuggets for tea. DH was somewhat out of action as he has a pulled hip which is quite painful, so I had to be extra strict as he can't lift Bea etc.
All went well though and we are now waiting for my son to get home.
I was able to do my morning exercise as we were awake extra early with DH's pain, so I got a session in before Bea arrived. Thank goodness. I've been picking at their food. Also had an AF beer.
Lanette - I think it's at least 25 years since the last reunion and maybe 35 before that!!!!
Love Heather UK XXXXXX2 -
Kate ~ So much talent! I made most of my clothes when I was in my teens and up until my late 20's. Now, I can't see well enough to thread a needle. My first sewing machine was a Singer and it cost $90. It still runs!
