Barbara: Thanks for your kind words. Monday we’ll be in touch with our primary doctor and see what comes next for DH.
Pip: We’ve often said that we would like to be up there and cheer on you and everyone else who rides for the MS ride, but DH simply hasn’t been feeling good enough for us to follow through. I have hopes that this planned surgery actually resolves his backpain issues. The backpain is not caused by MS. It is caused by arthritis, which is also an autoimmune disease. His MS is under excellent control thanks to a great doctor and good medicine. You and others who ride have helped bring MS into the spotlight and support development of good medicines that help sufferers feel better. THANK YOU!!!!!

there will be more years. kirby says that after we retire and move to California, that we will probably drive down with the bikes and airstream to continue riding when we're not here anymore. thanks for your continued support. I know you're cheering for us4 -

Thanks ladies for the kind remarks about my thriftiness.😁 Its really easy to do. After bill paying, I have a total that I divide by how many weeks there is. So this month its running about $160 per week I can play with. On my shopping day I go thru my pantry and see what meals I am working with, what items I need. Like this week one meal was spaghetti. The next couple of days is usually chicken fried cube steak with the left over spaghetti. If I have to buy more than a coup!e of items to complete a meal, then I don't make it. My husband and son do not really have to lose any weight, so they eat more carbs and proteins than l do. I only buy for 7 days worth. Many times lunches are just left over dinners. The other week I bought a package of ham slices. We had ham and eggs one night, and ham fried rice another time. When I buy a steak its for about 3 meals worth. I remember even as a little girl, looking at our pantry thinking, "wow so messy, how does my Mom even know what to cook"? I have a pasta section, a lunch section, and a snack section in my pantry. Its easy to look at my husband's lunch choices by just counting the pantry and the freezer area. I usually just put on my weekly list, Lee's lunches-4 or whatever then a total of what he can spend. Some times its $10 or $20. He buys lunches when we're shopping and gives me an amount on how much it will be. When I just buy things I need at the store I list it, with an estimated cost it will be on the far right. On the left side is an area for the actual price. Then as I shop I either hit my estimate amount or go over. Its a little game I play. In the last aisle I add all my actual prices (I round up when putting any prices down), and get a total. It is never over what my estimate total was. I cannot deal with willy nilly shopping with no idea how much anything is. I only shop and grab when my son says he will pay. Then its a fun social time, but I still have a core list.👍. Do I OCD much? Maybe.😁

Cheri, good to see you & congrats to your DD.It surely makes parents happy when the young ones are doing well.
Love the afghans. Your work in lovely.Do they need to be made with a certain yarn? What about size?
good thoughts to all.
Pat in Oh
When I make the afghans I typically use whatever yarn I have on hand. A lot of it is donated by my fellow Project Linus ladies! In my group I happen to be the only crocheter. Most of them quilt. As far as size goes I just make it however big the amount of yarn I have. The chapter meets once a month and we share what we've made and discuss where the donations will be going. A great group of giving women!

Rode the recumbent bike. The plan for tomorrow is to do one segment of 10MS Slim and Sculpt Pilates DVD then take the extremepump class.
NYKaren – we used to live in the Poconos (for probably about 12 years). Trust me, when you live there, you get to know all the backroads. Yes, they do get a lot of snow. BUT…they also know how to take care of it. Where we lived certainly wasn’t remote. I guess a lot depends on the area.
Barbara – I’m sure that a nearby soup kitchen would more than welcome Jake’s bread. Here we usually serve anywhere around 100 so if he made a few loaves, they could probably serve it with the lunch. Our soup kitchen just started using real silverware (not disposable plastic). That’s in keeping with their aim. They aren’t like many soup kitchens where it’s an assembly line. The people come in, sit at a table/booth and are served. Makes them feel better about themselves.
Welcome everyone new and those returning.
Carol – really, there wasn’t that much leftover food. I froze the hamburgers and hot dogs, I’ll freeze the buns, probably give Jess and Colby the cheese snacks, Vince will eat the pretzels, chocolate chip cookies and he and/or myself will eat the pineapple/angel food cake. Really, there isn’t anything else. I bought a gallon of ice tea which didn’t get opened so I’ll return it to the store. So sorry about BIL
Allie – so glad you had such a wonderful weekend
Watched a movie today while I was on the recumbent bike. I was surprised how fast the time went. The only problem seemed to be that at times I got so involved in the movie I wasn’t going as fast as I should have.
Lisa – I hate crepe myrtles. Someone planted one by the house and it seems to be so hard to get rid of. Shoots even now a few years later keep coming up. I’d like a Bradford Pear but where it would be wouldn’t be a good place for it, too windy.
Drkatie – I used to do frozen banana and cocoa. Or silken tofu and cocoa with a bit of honey for sweetener
Rebecca – the way I shop is first I decide what we’re going to have for dinner the next week. Then I buy the items that are needed that I don’t have. I also maintain a shopping list of things we need (like ranch dressing, croutons, etc, that sort of thing – not meats). I try to go to the food stores that have things on sale that we either will use (like ice cream for Vince) or need. After the food is cooked, I portion it out into small containers for one meal and freeze them. So the following week I usually only have to make one or two main dishes. Like this week I only have to make pork chops. Monday Jess and Vince are having the lift over rib eye we had Friday when Ken & Lynette were here and I’ll have a stuffed clam, Tuesday Jess and I will go out since Vince has shooting, Wednesday we’re having leftover meatloaf, Vince has to grill the pork chops for Thursday, Friday I’ll have miso soup with shirataki noodles, Saturday I’ll have a stuffed crab (or is it a crab cake? Leftover) and the same thing Sunday. So I only had to buy pork chops.

A bit wiped out today. Think the heat yesterday got to me more than I realized. Did get car washed and waxed, some ironing done, meals prepped, but did a lot of resting in between. Ready to start the work week. Will be busy. Have another children's event Wednesday evening (smaller than the last). Mentioned at church that we ran out of kids' shoes and Pastor is giving some from our shoe ministry (the person who ran that when we have food pantry moved to another city for a job). So, I guess Wednesday I get to hand out shoes. We also have back packs for the kids and prize drawings. These are the fun parts of my job.
Glad everyone made it through the weekend safely.

Hi Gals,
Lanette – with the situation with my brother, I have done an list with phone numbers (me, mom, vet, all the folks that get the list), dog food amounts, dog’s basic schedule, how to get a key to the house. And a few other random things. Called it emergency list and printed it out for folks.
Carol – great news that surgery went ok.
Allie – listen to Beth – Beth very well put! I would add to looking into community centers also looking into Senior centers for classes on Microsoft office, those skills can add to how much you can earn per hour quickly.
Heather – take care, the extra exercise has food and hydration that you need to consider. Have fun with the kiddos
Rori – sending good thoughts.
Barbie – I think I’d figure out how to be too busy or just meet in a public place Starbucks? For a cup of tea….
Janetr – that is an amazing transformation
Barbara – a light blue house with dark blue trim sound really nice to me!
Finally back to my routine, starting tomorrow. My mom came to visit on Thursday for my birthday and ended up staying till today as there was a plumbing problem at her house and no water for 24 hours. An extra day of company, actually it was fine, sometimes she is a pain and sometimes not, this was a good visit. Yeah!!! I tried hard to make good – or at least ok choices food wise while she was here and had some good and some not so good moments. I’ll get on the scale in a couple of days and see how things are. I find it easier to do food when I am in my routine.
I totally understand not wanting to think about it all the time, and will admit having 2 breakfasts I like and being able to pick one or the other help almost everyday start off ok. I wish I was more like Barbie with a set selection, but I am not, I love to cook so lunch and dinner is more of a creative enterprise. But there are some “tricks” that have helped even the worst of days. No sandwich has a top – is one of my favorite… as usually my down fall is lunch as I am in too much of a hurry. And I just have not yet found something I can eat, drive, and like except a 1 bread sandwich.

Good morning all.
Rebecca: I have thriftiness running through my veins from when I was a kid. It's a hard habit to break.
Michelle: I developed a system for shopping when I was first teaching and my family were young. It works well so we just continue with it.
I have a printed tick list with all our regular purchases, organised in the order of the layout of the store we use. There are spaces to add extras. I keep the old ones for a few months, and regularly review the list and add/remove items when necessary. We eat very similar meals each week, and both have a favourite set breakfast, and generally shop together. Having the list, means that I don't have to constantly think about what I'm going to eat. With the list, if one of us has an engagement, the other can go off alone and do the shop. We buy a lot of fresh produce and tend to cook for every meal. We share the cooking.
At the moment we are eating our own courgettes, green beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, and lettuces. I also have fresh herbs and peppers growing.
This morning, I plan to do some organising in the hobbies room, and after lunch we have our Dancing Group. We are hosting the U3A+ members of our charity for afternoon tea next Monday, and we want to make sure we haven't forgotten the dances over the weekend. U3A+ members are those who are now too old/infirm to attend U3A group meetings. U3A (University of the Third Age) is a lifelong learning charity in which DH and I are involved. Regular Activities normally follow the academic calendar from September to June.

My shopping system is to get comfy in my chair in front of my computer and open the grocery store website.
I start with Fruit & Veg because it's the first tab, and work my way through the tabs. I order basically the same stuff each week, so I could probably save it and it would all happen automatically, but I actually like looking at things, and occasionally there's something interesting we haven't tried.
So with that ... I'm going to do what I've just said because I'd like our order to arrive tomorrow.
Oops ... missed it. Groceries will be arriving on Wednesday. And I did order something we haven't tried.

My mother shops and meal plans that way too ... all about the meat! I get a bit of a chuckle out of it.
If I were describing a week's meals, I'd probably describe the main part and best part of the meal ... the veggies! We eat such a small amount of meat it's hardly worth mentioning.
Tonight (Monday) we had a mountain of veggies to which my husband added some left over black beans. As a side we had a bit of pasta with a touch of mince.
We'll have something similar tomorrow ... or if not, it'll be a soup thickened with veggies, rice, and a bit of shredded chicken.
Yummo!

Quiet today! I really do miss them when they've gone.
We are having them again on Friday for a morning and lunch so DDIL can get stuff done for their two week holiday. They did manage to get their new passports issued as an emergency after the theft, but, of course, it cost a fortune!
DH said we ought to go out for dinner one day this week. Yes!!
He has the dentist tomorrow and I have it on Friday when the kids are here. I'm sure DH can manage.
We don't budget for food buying. We just buy what we like. We have our favourite meals, almost all cooked from scratch with loads of veggies, but they go in random rotation. We try to eat a lot of fish and one veggie meal a week. We spend a LOT of money on food, but it is our (my) greatest pleasure. We don't eat out much and we don't spend money on convenience food or takeaway. We buy hardly any snack food. Don’t eat it.
Breakfast is the same every day, homemade muesli with fruit. Lunch is a small sandwich. I have a snack at 3 pm, usually avocado and cottage cheese. Dinner is the main meal with main course and a heap of veg, stewed fruit with homemade yoghurt, followed by a piece of cheese and/or two squares of dark chocolate. We start at 6 pm and finish around 8.30, so we spread it out. We nearly always have an aperitif at 5 pm and sometimes have alcohol with the meal, sometimes AF.
All this usually adds up to around 1800 calories, which takes all my official exercise calories of 600, which I do every morning. I also do bonus exercise, like running, after lunch, which I don't log, so I have some in hand most days, if I haven't overindulged when my routine gets thrown out.
This way I can maintain my weight. If I am trying to lose I have to stick to it rigidly. I am not always rigid if we are doing a lot of socialising, so I slowly gain a couple of pounds and have to go back to being rigid. I hate it when I can't exercise.
None of this would work without a very rigorous exercise regime, which I can do because I am retired. Most days I am burning 800 - 950 calories in exercise. This includes training with weights and body weights exercises.
Food is my hobby and even an obsession. You can love to eat and still lose weight, but it takes work. I am very fortunate in that I don't have a full time job (I do work most mornings at my writing) so it is easier for me to take that time to exercise.
Fitting exercise into your day by walking, or cycling to work, is a very good idea. Our car sits outside and is rarely used. I use a pull along shopping trolley for food shopping, often walking some distance.
Sometimes I think we do spend too much money on food and drink, but it is our major pleasure. We don't have pets expenses, media expenses other than a yearly tv licence, no health expenses, even have free prescriptions, not much gas for the car, no car payments, free car maintenance etc. Hardly spend anything on clothes. No gym membership. No mortgage. No rent. Generally we are very careful. We live on the equivalent of an average salary. Just pay for utilities, council tax and food. For anything else, like the cruise, I take money out of savings. Now I'm nearly seventy and my friends are dying off, I can't see the point of hanging on to it.

Monday -- I took today off work!! WooHoo!! I would so much like to go to a 4-day week but still be paid what I am. The weekend is much, much better when there's 3 days instead of just 2.
Unfortunately, it'll be another 3 weeks, at least before I get another long weekend. Oh well ... that's life these days. Exhausting.
Meanwhile today has been lovely.
Another much-needed sleep in.
A little shopping trip to pick up some stuff my husband is working on, another bamboo plant which will join 3 others and act as a screen between us and the neighbours behind us once they start growing up this summer, and a new backpack for me ... among other things.
Then I listened to the lecture I skipped last week. I'm almost thinking that's the way to do it. Skip the actual lectures and just listen to them later. It was much shorter than going to the lecture and I did my nails. Multitasking! However, it's a little bit of a risk ... in another class I skipped a lecture and that was the one they didn't record. Oops!
I also got enrolled in my spring/summer course. This one is a bit different. It is run by the Australian Maritime College within the College of Sciences and Engineering and it's entirely online. I've been saying for years that the IT College should go entirely online ... after all, we're IT!! So I'll get my wish with one class in another college.
And then it was time to hop on the bicycle to Zwift! My husband and I rode for half an hour and then I rowed for 18 minutes.
Evening now ... watching Midsommer Murders wrapped up in warm fleecy pjs.

Oh Kim, A VERY, VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY for the other day.
Lots of love, Heather UK xxxxxxx1 -
Janetr ... your transformation is inspirational to me!
Heather ... dizziness can be very frightening! Hoping it's a passing thing for you.
Kim ... Happy Birthday!
Lanette ... the new carpet smell is finally starting to fade! Thankfully, the weather allowed us to open the house up. Had it been installed this winter, it would have been very uncomfortable.
Food Shopping ... since I've changed to the IF lifestyle, my eating window (or one meal really) has become very important to me. As you know, I love to try new recipes and now that my nutrients for the day are primarily coming from one meal, I really need to think about what I'm eating. We do have a loose budget, but I don't worry too much about it if I go over. My husband from the first day of our marriage made it clear that food on the table took precedence over every other household expense. Whether I have a vegetable box or not, I start my list by researching recipes that I want to try, look to see if I have the ingredients on hand and, if not, add them to the list. I have to balance how many new recipes I try with tried and true meals simply because it can get expensive buying items you're not familiar with. We eat very little processed food mainly for nutritional reasons, but I also have a problem spending money on something that tastes marginally good knowing that I can make it better. When the freezer gets full of "bits," I plan meals that use them up.
I had a bag of pearled farro in the pantry. Decided to use it up this week and found this recipe... Charlie Bird's Farro Salad. We had it with panko crusted baked salmon. It was delicious!! https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/charlie-birds-farro-salad-6589464.
