Kim-Happy Birthday!!! I hope your day was fabulous.

Yvonne in TX: I use the phone app for all logging, but I use my computer to visit here. It works for me. I hope you work out a system that is easy for you.
Rebecca: It seems as though you’ve organized your kitchen with good sense and logic. WTG!!!
DH is looking forward to surgery on his back to relieve pain. It is a process. The next step is consultation with the surgeon, but it is more than a week away and we don’t have a surgery date yet. Poor DH is doing his best to get by in the meantime. His doctor has not prescribed pain medication for him, so he is using CBD oil and alcohol to get by for now. CBD oil is marketed for dogs. I guess this “old dog” is getting a little help from its use. I think the CBD oil is a better choice than alcohol, but he is making his own decisions and I’ll support his choices.

Michele - our main meals is usually figured out around meat too. We both grew up on meat, potato and vegetables for supper and I don’t know how Rodger would react if I chose not to make meat. Truthfully except for a salad I don’t know what I would have.
Machka - I love how you shop, I would probably do that if I was as busy as you too. I agree with a three day weekend. I would love to work 4 days at 10 hours than the 5 days at 8 I have now.
Heather - you make your life sound so perfect. I know it’s not no life is but you’re very close. I’m curious, is a tv license a yearly bill so you don’t have a monthly cable bill?
Kim - happy birthday!
Barbie - I eat all of my salads plain as well, except caeser. My favourite salad right now is cucumber, tomato and a bit of feta cheese.
Vicki - hope your new glasses aren’t over pricy and that your glaucoma is easily treated.
Yvonne - I don’t know what I would do if Rodger ever offered to make a meal or to do any housework. He takes care of mowing the lawn and repairs and that’s about it. I guess it’s my own fault that I never pressed the issue when we were first married. Truthfully, he probably wouldn’t do it the way I want anyway so I might as well do it myself.
Katla hugs for you and your hubby. I hope he’s using more of the oil than the alcohol and I hope he gets a quick surgery date.
I have eaten too much today I’m not worrying about it, I can be better tomorrow. Tomorrow I am rearranging filing cabinets at work. I am so excited for this! I may feel like I finally have my office organized for myself and will start feeling settled in.
I haven’t done any crafting since all of the wedding items and I’m ready to start again I think. Time to start designing!
Have a great evening!

Kim: Happy birthday. Hope your year is as terrific as you are. 🌺🌻🌼🌷
Katla: Healing energy beaming to your DH. Hope he gets relief.
As I write this, Meg must be driving back to Omaha from Denver. She was here over the weekend, and we had a delightful get together at Bonefish Grill. I'm the one in the hat.
This AM the demo of our guest bath started, and everything is prepped for a county inspector to view and approve tomorrow. Of course, they don't give any idea what time this inspection will take place, so the poor worker will just have to hang out with us until he shows up. My brother, who oversees massive building renovations in San Francisco, was a huge help to me today. He knew the questions to ask, and is providing an additional set of eyes to make sure the work is done well. When the bathroom is done, I'll post before and and after pix.
In the midst of this, I also had to head to the pool around noon for a bbq with my pool friends and their grandkids. It was an idea I pitched to a neighbor to celebrate back to school, so I had to be there. It was nice to socialize for a bit over a juicy burger. Not something I get to do often. Again, thanks to my brother who hung out back home keeping an eye on DH. I cooked enough burgers to bring back to the house for DH and DB. I don't own an outdoor grill, but the community has a few gas and charcoal grills for whoever wants to use them. I find it all a giant bother, and can just as well cook meet in a cast iron pan on the stove.
Grocery orders online save me time and money. As you add items to the cart, it gives you a running total, so I keep right on budget. I get all the basics ordered on Sat PM and they are ready for me to pick up on Sunday at 7:45 AM. I have everything home and put away by 8:15. So easy! During the week, I will usually make one side trip to a health food store for tofu, organics or other specialty items I can't get at my local Walmart grocery.
Stay well friends. We can do this.

My shopping list is easy! Meat, cheese, eggs, vegetables, water and very little fruit. I’m in and out of the store in 5 minutes.5

Food Shopping, I am a minimalist with food as well as with other parts of my life. I fix simple meals and eat the same things over and over. I don't have to budget as strictly now as I did at other times of my life but I am careful especially to buy only what I can use and make sure that I don't let things spoil and have to throw them out. I would eat the same things all the time but Jake wants more variety so he started reading recipes and bought a slow cooker for making things. Since the recipes make more than we can eat in a meal, we freeze the extra in canning/freezing jars to have at another time. This also assures that we control portion size and don't eat too much of anything at one time. When I buy bread for myself, I keep it in the freezer and take out one or two slices and put them in the toaster. I buy primarily frozen vegetables because that assures that I don't worry about spoilage. We do buy salad makings and Jake will often make a salad for himself with bleu cheese dressing. I eat salads plain (a good budgeting strategy for both money and calories). We rarely eat in restaurants, drink no alcohol, and have stopped traveling so money for food doesn't have to be rationed so strictly. I lost weight using the Isagenix plan and still have an Isagenix shake for my breakfast.
As a great contrast to my simple cooking and eating style, two of my favourite TV programmes right now are "The Great British Baking Challenge" and "The Big Family Cooking Showdown", both shows set in Britain with fancy cooking with ingredients I've never heard of.
Kim,
You and I are quite alike in this.
I eat just about exactly the same thing 5 days a week between 11 am when I might eat the first thing of the day until 6 pm when I get home from work. Occasionally it might vary if there's fruit available in the lunch room ... I might have a few pieces of pineapple, honeydew or rockmelon which I wouldn't normally have.
Dinners vary a bit but over a 2 week period, you'd start to see the same meals repeating.
We used to buy fresh veggies, but found they went bad too quickly, so now we buy frozen veggies most of the time. We are starting to grow some of our own and had fresh potatoes for several weeks from last year's harvest, so that's nice.
We also buy lower calorie frozen, packaged, or canned (like soups) dinners as sides to the pile of veggies we eat.
My husband makes the meals, but I've acquired a slowcooker and when I've got the time and inclination, I'll make a chicken veg curry or something in the slowcooker. It's a small slowcooker but it makes enough for a couple meals. When he was in hospital, on a couple weekends, I did up chicken veg curries, ate one and froze the other 3 so that I'd have a quick meal when I got home late from visiting him.
We also rarely eat in restaurants and drink no alcohol ... but we do travel. That's our main luxury item ... I guess the other would be our gym/bicycles.
And I'd love to watch "The Great British Baking Challenge" again if our TV channels would show it!!

If we can get rid of enough extraneous stuff I'll lobby for a housekeeper every other week or so. But meal planning is not exactly rocket science, and it annoys me that a smart man can't take this simple task off my plate.
Anyhow, that's my vent and it's a small one in the grand scheme of things. Now back to work.
-Yvonne in TX
We've had to look at ways to make things easier.
We have someone do our lawns.
We'll get a house cleaner in now and then.
I'll be booking a window cleaner soon, as it gets closer to spring.
I order groceries online and have them delivered.
We go with very simple meals that usually involve heating things rather than real cooking.
The only thing I'm still looking for with no luck is finding a personal assistant ... or just someone who will come in to organise and file paper. I can get everything else taken care of, but not that!!

Did one segment of 10MS Slim & Sculpt Pilates then took the extremepump class. The plan for tomorrow is to go on the stairstepper
Cheri – ROTFLMAO
Jess wanted to go for dinner and since Colby is here I don’t know that I have enough taken out of the freezer for an extra person. I just had the chicken, shrimp and garden veges. These are choices for some sort of “Build you own pasta” but I didn’t get the pasta or sauce Only tea for dessert and took one bite of this brownie lasagna that Vince got
I find that when I have a lot of refined carbs (like bread or cookies) I get real sleepy.
Terri – you sound very busy. Today I have exercise, then bowling, tonight ceramics, then mahjongg. I love fresh veges
M – I would love to order my groceries online, but the problem is that you need a minimum which I usually don’t make in one trip. Plus, I know that the person picking out the groceries isn’t going to look at things like expiration dates and I will. I’m trying to give Vince less and less meat. Only problem is that he will eat so few veges. Me on the other hand will eat practically everything so I fill up my plate with at least 3 different veges. In class Jess said that she goes to the class to hear the lecture since you can ask questions but when she comes home she goes over the lecture again.
Kim – happy birthday
JR – I keep my shopping list on my phone so if I’m near a store or in one, I always have my list with me. Saves multiple trips.
Katla – yes, “dignity” was the word I was looking for. If I was a gardener, I’d put fresh flowers on each table. But, alas, it would be silk flowers for me. Come to think of it, maybe I have some in my craft cabinet. Gonna go check. Got them, I’ll take them with me on Friday.
Rori – that’s just wonderful that you have your brother

Athena and her sweetness! 3 months old now!
My eldest son's scooter he built. Like he doesn't do enough building with his job as a helicopter mechanic! Then when he isn't rebuilding engines, he's building Legos! Love that kid.

Machka - I’ll make you a generous offer, for airline tickets and a two week vacation I’ll come organize your papers. That’s what friends do! 😂8

We've only had problems with expiry dates a couple times in the year+ we've been using the service. They've selected a yogurt or something that is within days of expiring so we have to eat it first. I've even started ordering fruit because they've been so good with picking things.
Ours is set up so that the more you order, the less you pay for delivery. So for a couple weeks, I'll order just over $200 worth and get a fairly low delivery fee, then for a couple weeks I'll be down around $140 and have to pay their higher fee. But it all balances out to about $175/week ... and we don't have to pay for fuel etc. to drive there!
A few of my lectures allow students to ask questions ... most don't. There's the potential that 400-ish students will turn up for a lecture so they don't want a bunch of questions because that will take up the whole lecture time. Sometimes at the end, if there's a bit of time, they'll ask for 1 or 2 questions ... but that gets included in the lecture recording too.
The tutorials are where we can ask questions. That's when they break us up into groups of about 30 students and we've got a tutor (usually a grad student or instructor who wants more hours) leading the class.
I figure the lectures, at least, could be completely online. The instructor could record them in a studio and post them. Then if they have to do in-person stuff, it could be just the tutorials.
But I can't convince anyone of that.

Grocery shopping - I usually go right after I get paid and stock up on school/work lunch stuff, frozen veggies and any condiments we might need. I buy fruit and meat as needed. I pass three grocery stores between work and home so I grab things like meat and milk as I need them. I tried online shopping and pick up. My store substituted too many things when they swore they did not have what I wanted in stock. Thing is, I could walk right in and find it. Most of the substitutions were more expensive. Incidently, my coworker has celiac disease and must keep gluten free. They told her it was took too long to select the gluten free items so they could not fulfill her order. Mainly it was lazy high school students shopping. My daughter and I love the “scan, bag, go” at Kroger.
My mom’s appointment with the surgeon is in the morning. I’ll take prayers if you pray or happy thoughts if you prefer!

Given that most personal organisers charge about $120/hour, if one worked 35 hours a week, that would be $4200/week or $8400. I could probably fly you here and put you up in a hotel for about $4000 ....
Your offer is generous!

Hi Gals,
Thanks for all the birthday wishes… it made my heart sing (which is better than me singing! LOL)
Today was – unbelievable? Busy? Exhausting… it’s another day at camp story –
Our camp has a flock of chickens, the best taken care of pampered chickens. The kids and staff alike love them. But as the gardener, they are “my chickens” the coop is next to the garden and the orchard is fenced and they use it to free range. We have the chickens to talk about, to do a bit of science education, - circle of life, they eat they poop fertilizer…. So we get adult “left over” chickens or ones that need to be removed from the home they are in. We don’t care if they still lay or not. So our flock of 5 is a ragtag bunch. 3 of them at the beginning of the summer were elderly about 6-7 years old. Last month one of the elderly chickens died, it was a pretty unfriendly chicken, but it was sad. Yesterday a second elderly chicken was not acting right, it is also unfriendly but it let me hold it, a first – not a good sign! So the staff and I were on death watch… It was alive about 9:30 last night but not at 8 when I got in this morning. So I started my day by removing the chicken that passed, saying a few words over her (I’m not religious, so just thanked her for her part in camp) and then hiked her out to a place far enough from camp proper that the kids would not see but left her to be part of the circle of life. Came back in cleaned the coop, put out the word that I need 2 new chickens.. Then did 3 hours of harvesting and weeding. By then it was about noon. Food into the kitchen then home! NOT, saw my boss Kent, and Roman our lead cleaning staff member – we have 2 part time positions open for cleaning staff and can not get anyone to fill the jobs! The temp staff from the temp agency were a no-show. And camp had to be cleaned. 16 cabins (120 beds) , 22 restrooms, the dining hall and the infirmary by tomorrow am. So Kent and I put on a smile and gloves and got to work. By 3:30pm my part was done. And I was ready for lunch ! I am exhausted.

There are 120 people in my class (it's a small class this semester).
Guess how many showed up to today's lecture!!!
Bonus question: Guess what the two most popular last names are.
(I looked when I was checking how many people are in the class and noticed that there are two common names tied with 4 people each ... well, one is very common and one is slightly less so.)

Morning, afternoon and evening, all...
Rori and Meg - you both look amazing! So glad your brother's there with you, Rori, to give you a little bit of support--sounds like it goes both ways. Love the pic--it's always fun when we can see each other IRL.
Kim - starting off the day with a recently expired chicken doesn't sound fun, nor does the camp cleaning. You're a tougher woman than I am!
Busy day ahead, go to the gym, back home to shower, get in uniform, head for town, one phone meeting at 10, meeting with the university folks at 1 p.m. to discuss federal grant app due in November, then back home again, jiggety-jig.
Actually lost a whole tenth of a pound since yesterday, and it made me happy. It's possible I'm a goober... but my eating has been so whack since I started exercising, and controlling it even a little bit yesterday made me feel like I might regain my balance food-wise.
Oh, and the nurse at my VA doc's office came through in spades! She got a doc to sign off on the low-dose antibiotics on Friday, and they came in the mail yesterday. Feel like I'm going to make it through the summer without getting a UTI now, always a bonus. I know I sound paranoid, but they are just incredibly miserable, and I'd rather be active and get sweaty without having to always worry about bacteria overtaking my whole system.
Love y'all!

3.5 hours of cleaning camp on top of your regular duties?
The only good thing about that is that you racked up a huge calorie burn.
I have to say I would have been crying & cursing instead of putting on a smile.
I do wish they would pay you what you deserve & give you the full benefit package.

Rori and Meg - Absolutely LOVE the photo. The only person I have met IRL is Penny at the North Pole.
Tracey - I think happiness is a combination of circumstances and temperament. I spent so much of my life with severe depression and railing against my circumstances that it feels odd to me to feel happy. I'm always waiting for the sword to drop on me. Studies have shown that, in general, you do get happier as you get older. I certainly have more equanimity.
The main circumstances are relationships, security, health and location. Currently all these are great, but all that can change in the blink of an eye. I count my blessings all the time and don't take any of it for granted.
I love where I live and it was the best decision to move here. I can't think of anywhere I would rather live.
A TV licence is a yearly fee, set by the BBC and the government, which enables you to use a tv, or online BBC content. Everyone who has a tv has to pay it. We pay ours by monthly DD. We have an aerial to receive the content, so no cable fees. I record programmes on a Freeview box. My son has Sky, Netflix etc, but we manage very well without all that. I don't like high monthly outgoings. We live on a very modest pension income.
I am always amazed by how much you spend on media packages in the US. Of course we do have phone and Internet basic charges for browsing.
I hope to run this afternoon. Weather permitting. It is quite chilly here this week and showery.

Good morning and Happy Tuesday!
Kim- Happy belated birthday! Oh my lord! The camp story! THAT is a lot of cleaning and kudos to you for lending a hand! I know most summer camps do not have a lot of money, so that kind of help is generally appreciated! Kim for the win!
Rori and Meg- Love the photo and the fact that you both got together IRL! Rori, the bbq sounds like it was a fun time!
Allie- All I can think about the hanging plants is that the hook that they hung from wasn't anchored into a beam. Did the hook itself come out of the ceiling as well?
Lisa- So glad you got some meds for the possible UTI! Also, I find that, for me anyway, eating right and exercise have to go hand in hand. If I stop exercising, my brain seems to take that as the cue that we are giving up. Once I begin exercising, I always start watching what I consume (simply because exercise is NOT one of my favorite things to do).
Machka- Ooooh! A guessing game! I am going to guess 60 out of the 120, showed up; and the two most popular names were Smith and Jones (although when my daughter graduated HS there were six Nguyen girls in her graduating class and none of them were related!) I like your lunch choice- brown rice, veg, and chicken. Everything right there in your lunch!
Rebecca- Your Athena Rose just gets more and more beautiful! What a sweet little face!
Connie KY- Prayers for your mom's appointment this morning!
Katla- Sending good thoughts, vibes, prayers for your DH! Hope he gets some relief soon!
regarding shopping- I plan my meals, both daycare meals and family meals, so that I can stay within budget. I have an actual sheet where I write out each meal, for each day then I can buy what I need accordingly. My spending has been reduced dramatically now that I have introduced meatless meals in my daycare/family. The only "processed" foods I buy are cereal (for the kids) and breads/crackers. Pretty much everything else is made/purchased fresh. I also use what I have before buying more. example: I am making chicken but I would love potatoes with it. I am out of potatoes, but I have rice in the house...rice it is! I got a kick out of Rita's comment about her hubby and the way he shops, because that is my DH to a T! I don't take him shopping with me. My budget would be out the window. There are times that I would love to use a shopping service; but it is a convenience and with that comes a cost/fee that would not be in my budget. Many services like Shipt only offer name brand items. I generally purchase store brand or whatever is least expensive (which is why I don't coupon). Add to that, shopping is pretty much the only time I am out of the house and anywhere around grown ups! Shopping is my social hour. Now if I could just convince stores to serve bloody mary's and mimosas while I shop and run into friends, it would be like a mini vacation every Saturday morning! Ahhhh...one can dream!
Update on my weekend: If you remember, I posted Saturday that I woke at 4:45 for Trentin's 5am arrival; and he never showed up. Well, the same thing happened on Sunday. Never heard boo from his mom. Not sure what is going on, because she has never done this before. They left owing me some money, but I most likely will not get that, as she is not returning any calls or texts. Just weird. So...Tim is in a lot of pain (more than normal) which I think is because he is stressing about the $6k per year paycut this has given me. I decided a few months ago, that when my time with Trentin was done, that I wasn't going to do evening or weekend care anymore. I am sticking to it. Tim is going to have to figure out something to do to help out. I do still plan to get my group license if I am approved for zoning. But a group home wouldn't be up and running until January, most likely. I hope I can go group. We have been in this house for 15 years, it is about that time when things will be giving up the ghost and needing to be replaced. Ah well. I have always liked the rollercoaster, so this kind of up and down works for me.
It is Rainforest Week for daycare! A pretty easy week as the kids are naturally interested in animals and nature. We made very cute handprint parrots yesterday.https://pinterest.com/pin/73957618869082565/ I have a sensory bin filled with green dried pasta, green rice, green aquarium stones and then added all kinds of rainforest animals and insects for the kids to find. That went over well, yesterday. Today we will talk about the ways animals and plants can protect themselves from predators and will make poison dart frog hats. We will also begin working on a four story diorama of the rainforest (the four levels of the forest). We are three weeks before school starts, up here. I think all of my four year olds are ready for the change. They will be beginning preschool and it has been talked up to them a lot, in efforts to get them ready. They seem to be a little surly, now, at the end of their time here. lol I think some superior force puts this surliness in them so that I won't miss them so much when they are gone! lol
Well, I better get busy! Love and hugs to all! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)

Karen - best wishes for the prep and the outcomes (so to speak)
KJ - It's the getting going that's the hard part for me... I actually woke up this morning with the cheery thought "it's cardio day!" as I genuinely do love that part of exercising. Again, once I get going. I'm just a big, fat dreader, and I always will be. Sounds like Trentin's absence is a mixed blessing, sorry you're not going to get paid what's owed, but glad you'll have your weekends/evenings back.
Rebecca - Athena looks like a happy, sweet girl.
Back from the gym, now to the showers!
Love y'all,

Katla ... praying your husband gets relief soon. My DH suffered for 12 years with debilitating back pain that required mega doses of painkillers. After back surgery (multiple), he is off of all painkillers and takes CBD occasionally.
Rebecca... Athena is beautiful!
Kelly ... you are amazing in your ability to think positively about fluctuating circumstances. I'm wondering, too, what's going on in Trentin's life.
Rori and Meg ... nice to see you both smiling!
The new carpet smell is now at much more tolerable levels. Just in time too as it's gotten hot and humid and I've needed to close up the house.
Someone asked about my older son's care in his new facility. It's improved significantly since we met with officials. They've made unannounced visits and claim all is perfect. Ummm. No. And I have new pics. Our newest wrinkle is that they're trying to deny entrance to some of my son's visitors because these individuals have been vocal about their disgust with his care. I'm not certain how that's going to play out, but I'm on it at the moment.
Last night my DH and I celebrated our 35th anniversary (August 11th actually). We went to Bonefish Grill and were underwhelmed. Way too salty and oily. I think we're done with "chain" restaurants. We're becoming very picky about our food.
New carpet has meant that the old recliner that my husband used to sit in prior to surgery looks dirty and dumpy ... not to mention it doesn't support his back anymore. So we ended up furniture shopping after dinner and purchased a pretty firm recliner that has a power lumbar and power headrest. It's a lift chair ... which he was taking offense to ... but I told him he doesn't have to use it. For pity's sake.
And, finally, my husband met with his boss for his annual review and informed him that he is planning to retire February 1, 2021! The key word is "planning," of course. Never know what the future holds. My uncle used to say that he wouldn't even buy green bananas because you didn't know what tomorrow would bring. Isn't that the truth.
Have a great day!

Today we meet our "friends" for lunch at our favourite Mexican restaurant. I know the food will be delicious. We will both be on our best behaviour. The less we say, the shorter the event will be.
We will meet soon with our attorney to update our will. One of our "friends" has long been listed on the will as contingency executor as well as the person to take our dogs if we die (she and her daughters were the breeders of our poodles). Now that our relationship has changed, we don't want them responsible for anything so we were finally able to find other good and trusted friends to fill those roles.
Machka, I'm guessing that no more than half of your class showed up, According to a Google search, the most common surnames in Australia are Smith and Jones and also Nguyen, Wang and Singh. I think you mentioned that many students are from other countries so I'm curious about the common surnames in your class.
Since I am retired, I have a lot more discretionary time than many of you. I love going to the grocery store with my husband. We shop from a list we make at home and generally buy the same things all the time, but occasionally spot something new and interesting. Even though we feel that we are not limited by a food budget, we don't buy expensive treats and are more likely to treat ourselves to heirloom tomatoes or fancy tea as a treat rather than expensive cuts of meat or Godiva chocolate.
Rori and Meg, How happy you both look.
