I have been listening to James Michener's "Hawaii" as an audiobook and reading "Alaska" as an e book. Reading what all these early people did to survive has made me feel extra lazy even though I walk for two hours or more a day and seek every opportunity to be active. It has also made me grateful for all the creature comforts I have that I can easily take for granted---food, shelter, water, electricity, heat, transportation, books, and a zillion other things. There isn't enough room to write about all these things in my daily gratitude journal.

Barbie - thanks for mentioning Hawaii and Alaska by James A. Michener. He's one of my favorite authors and it's time I put him on the winter reading schedule. We have so much to be grateful for, too much to write down as you so wisely stated.
So after wallowing in my sugar blues this morning, I decided to make a list of all of the GOOD health habits I have. A therapist once mentioned to me that what we think about expands. Constantly beating myself up over sugar keeps it in the front of my brain which thinks "sugar" and neglects the "is not good for me" part, keeping sugar on my radar I'm afraid.
Here's my start on good health habits (things I do automatically without having to talk myself into them, lol) which I accomplish at least 5 days out of 7 every week:- Have 1 or 2 or more cups of coffee each day. It's health food!
- Have 1 cup of tea, minimum.
- Eat a cruciferous vegetable every day, and a green veggie.
- Eat an avocado each day and some type of probiotic food - kraut, yogurt.
- Take my vitamins, including at least 5000 IU of Vitamin D.
- Do some kind of morning stretches when I first get up even if it's only a couple minutes of calf stretches and chair stands.
- Walk a minimum of 4000 steps.
- Brush my teeth.
- Check in with this board each day.
- Email or text a friend each. Even a sentence.
- Read/look at something inspiring.
- Laugh at the dogs or with DH or both.
Have to run into town in a few minutes to shop and attend Master Gardener meeting, but will continue. Curious to see how long I can make this list!
PS - these are habits which I know are good for me physically and mentally. (They might not be good for you or even pertain to you.) But I see each one of you post many good habits whether you realize it or not. Time to give ourselves some credit for a job well done

Just been for my 5k run. First one in a week! The pebbles were still all over the promenade after Saturday's storm. One lone JCB and a boy trying to clear it all up. Today was so calm the paddleboarders were out.
Lisa - I really sympathise. I think about food constantly, and I'm currently fighting the 5 lbs creep, but I've managed things by sticking to a very rigid timetable and eating proper meals. I'm luckier than you in that I don't have a sweet tooth and I like green vegetables in large quantities. Planning, shopping and cooking real food takes up a lot of my day, so I think about food a LOT. Maybe you could take over the catering from Corby? Good food does not have to be fattening. I find the better the food, the less I need.
Plus we don't really have snacks in the house, or not ones that appeal to me. DH has his biscuits, but he eats two in the morning and that's it. I don't even think about them.
My current weakness is alcohol. I'm not drinking a lot by British standards, but I am having some every day, quite unnecessarily sometimes. Not optimum for health.
You said a while ago you hadn't been logging. That is key. I am still logging after 7 years here and nearly 5 years on maintenance. I couldn't do this without it. My logging is haphazard and guesswork, mainly QuickAdd, but at least I'm doing it. I dread to think what would happen if I didn't!
The other way I do it is by ridiculous amounts of exercising. Most days it's 1,000 calories, so I can eat filling amounts of food. Most people can't spare that amount of time - nearly 3 hrs a day - so it's not for everyone, but for me it's an essential part of my life. It's what makes my life possible instead of having to starve myself. You said you weren't using the rower you bought. Why is that? I find it's the easiest way to get some calories burnt as I can watch online tv on my tablet at the same time.
My feeling is, rather than food being too important in your life, it is not important enough. You are fighting it instead of bringing it to the centre of your life. Read some inspiring cookbooks, shop for and produce some delicious, slimming dishes. Be proactive around food, instead of a passive victim. Food is your friend. It is the most wonderful thing on the planet, not your enemy. Walk towards it and embrace it.

Truly though, I do understand.
How about posting everything you eat on this thread for a week. And when you eat it. And why. And what food you lovingly prepare.
That would be an interesting exercise and you might learn something.
Radical I know, but you can't change your consciousness from the same state of consciousness. A whole new vision is required.

Losepudge- yeah that doesn’t sound right. Height age y weight is what I go by plus activity level mines low tho 1200cal a day but did it based on if my Mom was alive she was super tall hers was higher calories. Use a Calorie estimator on the web see if it agrees.
Decided to save the boiled eggs for tonight with toast. Instead added butter bean w/sausage 110cal serving with the 4oz steak 🥩,corn ,y broccoli 🥦 no butters used at all or seasonings. Crystal light peach tea y water

Well then ! Dad never allowed me to go to a concert He just accidentally thanks to Dementia told me about the Karen Carpenter concert he attended in the 70’s! He wasn’t even a college kid he was a older married man...yet I was banned from then mhhhmmm yup. Mad now Peri taking over.

Kelli-That is actually fast weight loss. You are doing great. It’s a slow process and unfortunately much slower than we’d like.
Machka - Your veggies look great. I like having fresh food from the garden, but we have issues with the critters mowing it all down over night. We manage to have cherry tomatoes, some lettuce, and they don’t seem to like habaneros…however, I don’t like habaneros either.

Heather - I don’t buy snacks either. It’s a good strategy. I do bake once in a while and will keep some cookies or brownies or whatever it is in the freezer for “special” occasions, but the rest go out of the house one way or another. I can’t easily eat it if it isn’t there.

Did a spinning downloadable workout today. The plan for tomorrow is to do Joyce Vidral’s Cougar DVD.
Went to the neurologist—everything’s fine. Then saw the family physician for my annual physical. My blood pressure was a little high so he wants me to take it while I’m at home. I wonder how long your bp stays high after exercising? I know that your metabolism stays high for a few hours, I just don’t know about the bp. I exercised (finished about 8 am) then went to see the neurologist then went to see the family physician around 11. Wonder if my bp would still be high? I do eat fairly healthily and you know that I exercise a lot. Guess there’s nothing more I can do. Got the flu shot while I was there. My BMI is 24 sometimes low 25, so it’s not that I need to lose a whole lot of weight.
Anniesquats – when I get a sugar craving, I take a little bit of vinegar and that seems to squelch it.
Ginny OH – what I’m doing this year is making a list of things that I want (like another float for the pool) so this gives the kids something that they can give me that I know I want and can use.
Amber – hear you on the bathroom lines. I’m a big water drinker. Name the store, I can tell you where the bathroom is….lol The ONLY place I’ve found that didn’t have long line in the women’s room is at Daytona. When they remodeled the speedway, they had to have the same number of bathrooms for men as for women. And you know who primarily goes to the races!
SuziQ – all those losses! Wish I could say the same thing. But I did lose 3# at the doctor’s from last year. Not that that means much. When I walked out of the neurologist’s today and got on the elevator, there was this poster for some holiday concerts (Christmas) in November. Someone else was in the elevator with me and she agreed that it isn’t even Thanksgiving. If we were to have Thanksgiving in early October like the Canadians, I wonder if it would get lost in all the Halloween hubbub? You know, it might not be a bad idea to have Thanksgiving in August. At least then you can have it outside. But it doesn’t look like that would ever happen

Want to make a large mug to take to FL. A friend got one for me. It holds 24oz, all we have down there hold only 8 or 16. I just can’t decide if I should make the entire inside blue and a blue rim and blue handle and the cup itself a multi-color. What do you all think? Solid blue inside or not?
Heather – when I buy snacks I try to buy ones that I don’t like but that Vince does. Doesn’t always happen.

Heather - so much to unpack about this - and I found myself making excuses for all these things for why I don't do them. And they are excuses, and I'm aware they are, so I'll spare you the full litany: they range from "because I'm exhausted" to "I just don't care enough to want to do that," but they're still excuses.
But I actually boggled at the thought of posting everything I eat in this thread for a week. I can't even log my own food in my own food diary, which I keep private, which should tell you I can't even be truthful with myself. I cannot imagine being truthful with anyone else at this stage... and particularly people I respect and love like this group.
But, what it did do was make me go log my food to this point for the day, and that's a very good thing. Because, if there is one thing I've learned it's that until I own whatever it is, really and truly own it, I can't fix it.
Thank you for that.
(Edit to add: Because I am far from saintly, I have to admit, Heather, that my first response was anger. And then I remembered all the super-heavy years, and that anger was always my first defense. Once I laughed that reaction out of the room, I understood that I just didn't want to hear what you had to say, because if I heard it, I'd have to acknowledge it, and if I acknowledged it, then I'd have to go to all the trouble to fix it. Thank you for saying it anyway. I knew you'd understand if anyone would. )

Lisa in AR - Oh my dear friend, I think you just described me exactly. I would never honestly post in public what I eat. I sometimes lie to myself, but I've been trying hard to go back and log it if I eat it. I call my food craving "fat brain" and/or my "inner toddler" I want what I want when I want it syndrome. Being a fellow post RNYer and having had my surgery many many years after you did, I think we were given much more one-on-on counseling and and I have a three ring notebook that precisely outlines how I am supposed to eat for the rest of my life. When I feel myself reeling totally off the rails, I pull out the notebook, read it as if I was immediately post surgery and follow eating how I know I should. Its not easy for sure because I love sweets and if I start there is no stopping. I had the worst dumping episode when the kids were here over the weekend that I've ever had in six years since my surgery. I ate a piece of birthday cake that had an icing flower on it, I scraped most of the rest of the frosting off but ate the flower, I was sicker than a dog for a while. This is our life.
I know you are not a "hugger" but I'm sending you the biggest big hug anyway I TOTALLY understand where you are coming from. Only good thoughts and encouragement my friend

I relate to everyone's angst about posting food daily. Thankfully, I am a creature of habits, and this is one of my better ones. Is it letter perfect? Hell no! And, I seldom ever 'close' the diary, so a real test for me is logging the tiny bits and bites that sneak in after dinner. DH can eat whatever he wants and not gain weight. At 75, with dementia, practically deaf and with a tremor, eating is his one big pleasure. My brother has cut way back on alcohol, and his sugar cravings are on full display now, despite having spent most of his life with very little interest in sweets. And, I'm in the middle, just trying to keep myself and the guys mentally and physically healthy. And still have fun 🎈😁🎈😁
Have learned so much from all of you who share your questions, challenges and victories. Today I channeled Kelly and made up 2 one pound baggies of cut and washed veges to nosh on today and tomorrow.
Gotta go. Another little storm is brewing and I gotta move the car inside the garage. Stay well friends. We can do this.

hello all.
I feel as though I'm doing great today. I am more hungry than usual so ate my lunch early and that seems to have satisfied me.
I was successful on the treadmill walking 32 minutes most of the time at 3.0 speed with incline of 1.0 Any faster and I think I'd be running. My maximum heart rate throughout is about 126 and my target based on resting HR is 122-133. The treadmill is not getting any easier to tolerate 30 minutes, I still almost hate the last 5 minutes. This could be b/c of boredom and nothing holding my interest on the TV to watch or b/c I've started to sweat and the feeling is unpleasant.
I am not sure if I should stay at this pace and length or turn up the speed or try to walk for a longer time? Does anyone have any ideas?

Michele NC- Quick look under the stall next to you! I’m wearing Tennieshoes by Skechers! Lol yes Daughter knocked my bladder completely off for 20yrs then JR they stitched it but Doctors don’t think it stayed. Better than it was tho so can’t complain.That y IBS to Colitis I definitely seen every toilet 🚽 around me lol.
Daughter ageees we caught the old man in a lie lol 😂 no concerts n his life my foot he still describing it even to Daughter! Bet if I ask his sister I’ll get more info lol
Oh well protective Dad what can you do lol. Who knows maybe that Christian Concert I wanted to go to was wild!!! Shock face 😂

Karen - Funny you should mention James Clear. Thanks to you or (someone on this list ) I started following him on Facebook, and recently read an article by him regarding habit stacking, which I think you've mentioned before.
That inspired me to start my "good habits" list this morning.
Still working on my list. Adding things like "look both ways before crossing the street". Very elementary, but so vital to keeping healthy. Having fun.

Thank you, JanetR! You're right, my dear, I'm not a hugger, but find I can accept the ones I receive here in this group without flinching. Perhaps it's having had the surgery that lets us acknowledge that we have gaps in our ability to cope with food, so we need different reminders? I don't know anymore. This is the third time since the surgery that I've hit the 200-pound mark again, and that is genuinely what spurred me to losing 40 pounds the previous two times... I will find the ability to pull up my socks and start again.

When I was trying to change my alcohol habits a year ago I made a calendar chart and stuck it on the fridge. I gave myself a gold star for AF days and used sticky emojis for other days along with writing the units I had drunk. I then totalled the units for the week. Just having the chart out in the open really helped me change my habit.
I think I need to do the same thing again now as I am not happy with the amount I am drinking. It's crept back up. I always log the calories, so it's not that. I just would like to be under the government guide lines and it's not happening right now.
Sometimes seeing it in black and white can help because it gives us an objective base to work with. Plus it puts us in control.
Most of us have secrets and compulsive behaviours we are ashamed of. We are human. All too human. It's also what makes us interesting individuals rather than boring robots.

I walk on the treadmill hating the first 5 minutes! After that I guess i start feeling better. I listen to podcasts or music while I walk. In low energy days I just choose manual, mostly I try for incline at 5 at 3.5 speed but sometimes I have to lower the speed. It ain’t all that interesting but it does improve my energy level for the rest of the day. I put a penny in a jar every time I walk whether it was intense or not. Also I am keeping track of my minutes by joining the November 24 hours of exercise challenge which is a new experience for me.

Long day,I assisted ,but all went smoothly
Working 10-3 tomorrow and 9-5 friday 8-1 Saturday..so this paycheck will be good.. but he needs to get another assistant in there the only reason I'm doing this is so Zina can mourn her dear FIL ..
I need time to sit and apply for jobs ,and I will try to do that in the morning..
Alfie went up with Lil upstairs and was enjoying himself.so I went upstairs and got him and now he is snoozing on the bed

wow! lots of powerful stuff on here today, lots to ponder. Finally able to secure a home equity loan from credit union for the roof. Have called roofer and he will get us on his schedule. So glad not to have to refinance. Our closing costs with the refi would have been in the range of $7400, with the credit union they are $1. Crazy.

Lanette, making a list of what you're doing right is a fabulous idea.
Here are some things I do with great regularity.
*log what I eat
*log exercise
*seek every opportunity to be active
*participate in this thread
*walk my dogs first thing in the morning
*ride my exercise bike while watching TV
*go to my dance classes consistently
*drink 64 ounces of water a day
*read books about habits, happiness, and healthy living
*go for a walk with a friend instead of meeting for a meal
*listen to podcasts and audio books while I walk to encourage me to walk more
*carry a pedometer and aim for 10.000+ steps a day
Here are some things I don't do:
*use salad dressing
*eat dessert
*drink alcohol. coffee, tea, or fruit juice
*pay attention to the news or anything that will get me upset or stressed
*use social media
*sit for very long except in a car on a necessary trip
*shop for recreation
*eat for recreation
There may be more to add to the list, but I've been sitting too long and it's time to get up and do something else.

I know you are a fan of lentil soup. I found a neat recipe for "Easy Crockpot Curry Lentils" on theironyou.com website. Using brown lentils, tomatoes chopped/sauce, dried curry powder, a few chopped veggies and a whole can of coconut milk. High on fat and carbs, but also up there on protein and fiber so I can make it fit on moderate low carb if I behave myself the rest of the day.
I'm making it tomorrow. The photo on the website looks yummy.

I use Walden 0 cal dressings tried a few till I found flavors I like.
Bbq sauce Ghughes 10calories Sugarfree
All condiments I read now for find the lowest numbers out there with good taste.
Drinking more water when hungry is helping y changing foods to the season now for my hunger levels.
