Went to ceramics then to Publix. They had the beyond burgers on sale BOGO plus I had two $1 coupons plus $2 at Publix plus the senior discount. Also got some ground turkey to make patties.
A friend called to invite me to a concert. She has free tickets. I don't know if I care for the music, but it's free. Vince doesn't want to go, it's not his cup of tea. We were going to go to the Hickory Community Theater but I'll see if I can change the tickets to the following night. It doesn't look sold out that night.
Have a good evening, everyone

Hi e.veryone,
Sitting here watching Pioneer Woman episodes. Today I went for mini walk and then walked the complex with manager(she's on scooter because of broken ankle). Made tuna noodle casserole this afternoon for lunch and supper. Monday I am going to have to be picky as there are lots of freebies for veterans(which I am). The one safe place may be Ponderosa buffet-salad bar. This weekend my oldest grand daughter turns 9. Hard to believe it. Have been staying aware of what I eat. LOTS of lettuce.
Have a great day!

I did it! One day without cookies! Yay!12

Machka yummy spring veggies!
Welcome scgirlz3, loosepudge, cestabrook.
Lannette You're right, what we think about expands, and I've been thinking entirely to hatefully about my body. Thanks for suggesting the good health habits-things I do list.
Morning readings, evening devotion.
Floss and brush, 8 C water, log every day
vitamins, CI<CO, 50+ thread & AF most days
BB&B MWF
dog group pack walk W&S
line dance Friday nights. (Tuesday night class is on hiatus).
Rx weekly.
Regular MD, chiro, massage therapist and DDS appointments.
AND I'm adding in at least a 20 min walk with Tumble or a friend a couple of days/week.
Yay me!
Michele PigPen's dust cloud turned out just right! As for the mug, I've heard blue discourages eating/drinking as few foods in nature are blue. Is that your strategy for limiting intake from the new mug ?
Foggy and 48 degrees today at dog group back walk, and I forgot to wear gloves. Brrrr. Got so chilled, I had a glass of wine with my salad and cheese. Miracle of miracles, stopped at one. No more wine for me for awhile, want to savor my success.
Lighter, lovelies!

I feel as though I'm doing great today. I am more hungry than usual so ate my lunch early and that seems to have satisfied me.
I was successful on the treadmill walking 32 minutes most of the time at 3.0 speed with incline of 1.0 Any faster and I think I'd be running. My maximum heart rate throughout is about 126 and my target based on resting HR is 122-133. The treadmill is not getting any easier to tolerate 30 minutes, I still almost hate the last 5 minutes. This could be b/c of boredom and nothing holding my interest on the TV to watch or b/c I've started to sweat and the feeling is unpleasant.
I am not sure if I should stay at this pace and length or turn up the speed or try to walk for a longer time? Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks for sharing,
Vicki from Southern WI
I walk on the treadmill hating the first 5 minutes! After that I guess i start feeling better. I listen to podcasts or music while I walk. In low energy days I just choose manual, mostly I try for incline at 5 at 3.5 speed but sometimes I have to lower the speed. It ain’t all that interesting but it does improve my energy level for the rest of the day. I put a penny in a jar every time I walk whether it was intense or not. Also I am keeping track of my minutes by joining the November 24 hours of exercise challenge which is a new experience for me.
NYKAREN1 -
Thank you NY Karen for letting me know your thoughts about using the treadmill, I appreciate it. I'll try to crank it up to 3.5 and see how long I can keep up. I'm also going to start a coin jar to see how much I can get in there. Good advice2

Today is Marooned Without A Compass Day!
"Marooned Without a Compass Day can be interpreted a few ways, but is dedicated to being lost or stuck somewhere without a compass. The day can be looked at as a challenge, where people purposely get lost and try to find their way back to civilization without a compass. The day can also be looked at as a day to get out into the wilderness and unplug from technology and just relax."
Janet - Deepest condolence on the loss of your sister.
Barbara - Hey, don't worry about how fast you walked your mile, just think about the fact that you walked a mile. An hour spend walking is way better than an hour on the sofa!
Flea - I'm a big fan of the standing desk too. My VariDesk was an investment (although way less than a full-sized adjustable desk!). Since I work from home I don't do a lot of walking in the course of a day. It's good to be out of the chair for part of the day.
Barbie - Michener manages to pack a lot of what could be dry history into a really entertaining package. He has a way of making you feel like you're living it. Does he narrate his own work on your audiobook?
Michele - I track my blood pressure at home because I've got a bad case of white coat syndrome that makes my readings high at the doctor's office. There's a simple little smartphone app called BP Journal that lets me log the readings, and it also gives space to put a note so you can track what you were doing (e.g. "immediately post-exercise"). I print out the log and take it to my doctor appointments so they can attach it to my chart.
Welcome to the new arrivals! You'll find friendship and encouragement here!
Over here the motivation fairy is still with me but I've had a couple of down days. After we got home from train-geeking in San Antonio yesterday I did my strength training at the gym, but I hated every minute of it. Today I still feel achy and tired but I did cardio on the stationary bike anyway, with "Forged in Fire" occupying my mind to keep me going. Tomorrow is supposed to be gym day again but I feel like I need another recovery day so I think I might ask Philip if we can swap it to Friday. I'm proud of myself for sticking with my plan despite the disruption of weekends, travel, etc.
I would like to have celebrated the day with some outdoor time, but it ended up being a very long work day. I did stand outside for a few minutes to admire a lovely lunar halo.
Wishing you all a good compass to help you find your way!

SCGirl - Yep, I'm a writer. Thanks for the compliment! Our Heather in the UK is, as well, we both have books on Amazon. I also write grants for a living. Others don't necessarily advertise on here that they're writers, but each of us has our own voice in this place.

I write as well, but mine is technical writing as part of my jobs ... writing instruction manuals, documentation, etc.
Just about as exciting as that sounds! But I enjoy it.

Here are some things I don't do:
*use salad dressing
*eat dessert
*drink alcohol. coffee, tea, or fruit juice
*pay attention to the news or anything that will get me upset or stressed
*use social media
*sit for very long except in a car on a necessary trip
*shop for recreation
*eat for recreation
There may be more to add to the list, but I've been sitting too long and it's time to get up and do something else.

Similar ...
I also don't like salad dressings, dips, and sauces in general. I will use them occasionally ... for example, this weekend I will make a chicken/veg curry in my slow cooker and that will have a light coconut milk (fairly low cal) & curry sauce, but it's not something I do on a regular basis.
I do eat dessert, but rarely other sweet stuff ... except for low cal yogurt and fruit. I just don't buy anything else.
These days dessert consists of ice cream bars. I have discovered boxes of ice cream bars which are reasonably low calorie. Our favourites are higher calorie so I'll buy one of those boxes and then more of the low calorie ones. These give us something nice in the evening without blowing our calories right out of proportion. Also, ice cream bars help to control the intake. It is so easy to FILL a bowl with ice cream!!
I rarely drink my calories ... no alcohol, no fruit juice, no sugared beverages, etc. The only time I will drink my calories is if I am doing or have done a long bicycle ride (or run) and have burned a lot of calories. Or if I'm having dental work and can't eat solid foods.
I do drink coffee and tea because I drink them "black" ... no milk, no sugar. In fact, a late evening indulgence is one of my caffeine-free teas. The lights are low, soft music is playing on the stereo, and I'm sipping a cup of apple-cinnamon chamomile tea or a orange-cinnamon rooibos tea or something similar.
I rarely watch or listen to the news. I use social media for information purposes ... to find out what interesting events are coming up etc. ... and to connect with my family scattered around the world.
And I don't like sitting in a car!! I'd much rather park the car and walk several kilometres than to drive or sit in a car. I take the bus to work and walk to do all my errands. I do shop (or window shop) for recreation at lunch ... it's a way I can get out on a cold rainy day like today and walk without getting soaked.
And we eat out occasionally ... not even all the time when we travel. We always bring food when we travel and there are days when we just can't be bothered getting back into the car to find dinner ... it's easier to put together something quick where we are staying.

Morning, afternoon and evening all,
Color me frustrated on the eating front. I think Karen in VA's comment about "food brain," is right on the mark--that my brain moves over into this headspace where needing/wanting food overwhelms every rational thought. You'll never see me sling the term "food addict" around, as humanity in general are all food addicts--if we don't eat, we die. But I am, I know, addicted to how food makes me feel, and for the last three months, I've lost the battle to not indulge in that addiction pretty much every day.
That feels like an overdramatic statement - but looking back down the last few months (and quite a bit of the rest of my life) my rational mind just steps aside and lets the 300-lb. me take right over, and I am mindlessly shoving food down my throat yet again. And if I don't do something about it, I'll be right back up to that 300 lb. person. I genuinely want to find the control panel and the lever that I can flip that pushes me back over to the rational side of eating. I know it's there. I've found it before - and in fact, found it twice since I started with this group of lovely people, losing 40 pounds in a six-month span. But, since I began exercising again, I've struggled with this every single day - and I'm 13 pounds heavier than when I started back in the gym July 30. Averaging more than four pounds GAIN each month is not where I want to be, but I need to keep the exercise, too.
I know the suggestions will come thick and fast, and I'll take them all as they are meant--but this morning, I just needed to say those words above to people who understand these feelings. On a happier note, the rest of my life from work to marriage to home life is amazing and happy. Getting to and maintaining a healthy weight is the last piece of my puzzle, and I need to find it and fit it in, so I can stop this sine wave from despair to joy and back again with how big my ever-loving backside is getting.
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR
Lisa I so empathize with you. For some of us, "food thinking" is such a siren song that resisting it is utterly exhausting. Not everyone suffers from food thinking. I was first made aware of this issue by an amazing bariatric specialist I was seeing a few years ago. This brilliant physician is triple boarded - Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, & Nonsurgical Bariatrics. We were chatting about how frustrating it is to resist, resist, resist, resist, all the while knowing deep down inside that you ARE going to eat, that it IS going to happen, & yet trying so desperately to get past it with all the techniques & tricks you can muster. The conversation was so enlightening. He himself is a food thinker. He manages it by working at an office and taking his prepared food with him to eat on a rigid schedule that includes mid-day exercises. Since his workday is so busy & he's busy with his family in the evenings, he makes it work during the week. He has a harder time when he is at home over the weekends. His wife, on the other hand, forgets to eat. He talked about how maddening it is to have a spouse who rarely thinks about food. He said that some days when she is particularly busy, by late afternoon she realizes she doesn't feel good & it will dawn on her that she hasn't eaten anything all day. She literally forgets to eat when she's busy! I can't imagine that. I truly wish I was like that. I've posted his approach to helping patients with disruptive food thinking in the past, so won't repeat it here. Just know that many of us here totally get it.

I have been listening to James Michener's "Hawaii" as an audiobook and reading "Alaska" as an e book. Reading what all these early people did to survive has made me feel extra lazy even though I walk for two hours or more a day and seek every opportunity to be active. It has also made me grateful for all the creature comforts I have that I can easily take for granted---food, shelter, water, electricity, heat, transportation, books, and a zillion other things. There isn't enough room to write about all these things in my daily gratitude journal.
Barbie in NW WA
Barbie The first tome I read was Michener's "The Source". It was the summer between 7th & 8th grade & my mother just handed it to me one day and said "I think you'll enjoy this". I had devoured Pearl Buck's books about generations of people, so maybe that's why she suggested it. Anyway, I could not put Michener's book down. It's the only Michener book I have read, though. I think I would like to read more of his writing. Maybe "Hawaii".1 -
I'm a "forget to eat" person. I was out running errands and doing stuff today. Then busy when I got back to work. About 3:30 pm I realised I was hungry and finally took a moment to have lunch. My difficulty comes late in the evening when I'm hungry and tired but it's going to be another 1.5 hours before I can sleep.
That and trying to juggle exercise and food intake.

Welcome Newbies!
Janet Happy, happy birthday! So glad you got to celebrate with your daughters and granddaughters! What a lovely cake to commemorate!
Michele Glad you were able to get more repairs on the bridge. It surprises me how quickly teeth move. My son is doing the invisalign braces and it will only take 6 months for his teeth to straighten. I have lost several teeth (mostly in back) and they have large gaps now. Fortunately, I have been able to get bridges and crowns for the front. BTW, I like the idea of all blue on the inside!
I have finally caught up! Yay! You ladies have such wonderful insight! I absolutely love reading your posts! Since my brain injury, it takes time for me to read and process...I used to be a speed reader with great recall - now, it is a challenge to read and re-read but I think it makes me appreciate what I am reading more. Also, being retired, I don't feel badly about how long things take since I have a lot of free time.
It is after 3 am and we are leaving in a few hours to go to Michigan. I am grateful Hubby does the driving so I will be able to sleep in the car. I have so much pain riding in cars for any amount of time. I also get quite manic before trips to see my family…especially the children. My mind races and I get so excited to see them that I can’t fall asleep. We are going to my nephew’s wedding and my out of state children and grandchildren will be there along with my siblings, nephews and nieces, and cousins. My local son and his wife will miss out since she is too pregnant to travel safely and comfortably. Everyone is spread all over the US so it will be an amazing time together!
I will probably not be logging much during the week. I do promise to make wise choices, stay low carb and little to no sugar, and stay active. I don’t promise to stay away from alcohol. We will be celebrating! I won’t have a lot though as I have lost the desire to drink too much.
Hope everyone has a wonderful week, and I will try to check in.
Chilly and about to be a lot colder! Luci in WNC

Lannette let me know how the lentil soup turns out, it sounds yummy. And yes, red lentil soup is my favorite. I call it my “epic, life changing soup!” It is my weekday lunch almost every day from November to April
After dropping my phone hundreds of time over the last 4 years my luck ran out last night and the glass has broken. DH loves to research so he instantly found me a repair shop that is half the cost of the apple store, good guy that one. Never settle for a first price!
Big day today, I meet my honors orchestra kids, emotions and excitement run high and I have to reign it all in, manage expectations and guide them to work together—a few of them are quite skilled but aren’t team players—-YET.

cestabrook-Welcome to the group. If you had hip replacement in early October you are still in the recovery phase of that. I have had both hips replaced. Weight may still be up due to the swelling, which takes some time to go away. As that dissipates and you get back to more normal movement, the weight will go. My second replacement was in Feb. 2018. Between the two hip replacements from August 2016 and March of this year I had slowly put back on 20 pounds. When I went back to honest logging and meal prep, the weight went away and I am now to a lower weight than before first surgery. Give the hip a bit more time to completely heal, walk as your major exercise at this time (that's great for hips) and make sure you're giving your body good nutrition.

Catching up (again) I'm sat listening to a new radio station I have found it's called Minster 70s and plays songs from the 70s. I love it! It takes me back to my youth I think that the 60s and 70s had the best music !
A couple of pictures of my old kitchen, the demolition and one of the refit:
[
I'll post some of the finished kitchen soon, it's almost there, most of the cupboards have their doors on now and the worktop is on, I've even got a sink (I've really missed you sink) hopefully it will be a functional kitchen by the weekend.
Was thinking of getting an Instant Pot rather than a new slow cooker does anyone have experience of an instant pot? Also looking at a Ninja Foodi but think this may be a bit too big for me, but it seems to do everything.
Love to all

Did a Turbo Fit DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to take the water class.
Got my flu shot yesterday and I think I’m having a reaction. Last night I was FREEZING cold, this morning I am hot. I’ve been coughing (but it’s getting better, last night you would think I had a cold), at some points I was having very vivid dreams. It’s getting better. Supposed to go for my shot of Prolia tomorrow. Normally I get it in the left arm since I’m right-handed but I think I’ll get it in the right since the left is still sore from the flu shot. Unless it’s totally better (which I doubt), I’ll get it in the right arm since I’ve never had a reaction to that shot.
Last night a friend called to ask me to go to a concert with her, she got free tickets. Really, that music is not my cup of tea and I wouldn’t pay to go see it, but since it’s free. We were supposed to go to the Hickory Community Theater so I’ll see if I can change the tickets to the next day. I don’t see a problem…we do it all the time at the Green Room. As long as there are seats and there are, we change the tickets. The only thing is that our seats probably won’t be as good as the ones we had.
Marianne – I like the Pioneer Woman, only I think she uses a lot of butter. Most chefs to me use too much salt. A guy at bowling was telling me that the Golden Corral around here closes at 4 and then reopens at 5 for veterans. He said the line is so long that they need to close down and restock
Barbara – my strategy for the mug is not to limit the intake (if anything I want to encourage it) since I’ll use it probably just for tea (without sugar or creamer so 0 calories). Last night at ceramics I saw that they have this paint that I think I’ll use with. I think the mug itself will by Tiger Lily which is a white with orange and yellow splashes of color and the inside of the mug and handle will be orange. It’s a Mayco CG-966 if you’re interested to look online and see it.
Yvonne – thanks for telling me about the bp journal. I’m wondering if I have white-coat syndrome. The doc said he wasn’t really concerned since lots of people have white coat, so that’s why he wants me to take it at home
With this reaction to the flu shot, I seem to have no desire to eat, which isn’t a bad thing at all
I’m not crazy about salad dressings, vegetable sauces, etc. I want to taste the vegetables, not the sauce
Luci NC – the reason I’ve decided to do the inside of the mug orange and not blue is because the blue paint streaks unless you put an extra coat of it on. Since this will be INSIDE the mug, that might be hard to do. Safe travels
NYKaraen – Vince loves to research things, too.
Viv – great job on the kitchen. When was your old kitchen built?
Green Room today then Newcomer bowling tonight. The only other bowling alley in the area closed and all their leagues are coming over to where we bowl. It's going to be real crowded, but we'll manage.

Viv UK The photos of the kitchen redo are exciting, keep 'em coming. I believe I was a kitchen designer in another life. I can't get enough.
Instant Pot is a big favorite of many of us on this thread, including me. The slow cook function works great, so I have gotten rid of my slow cooker. The model I have makes yogurt, which I use frequently. HeatherUK uses hers all the time & can chime in. Several others here swear by their Instant Pots. I became interested after Heather bought one for her son.

VA Karen - for the longest time after I gave Jess an IP, she kept saying "ma you have to get one". I would just say "I have a pressure cooker, I have a slow cooker, what do I need with another appliance?". Then I tried the one I gave Denise when I was up there. Now it's on my Christmas list and the pressure cooker (which is over 40 years old but still works fine) is going to the Salvation Army
Denise is giving us hassles about Christmas -- again. I swear, every year without fail she gives us heartache.

Motivation is over-rated. If I had waited for motivation, my ship would never have left the dock. Just do something today that you didn't do yesterday. Then do a little more of it. Be your own mother and assign tasks to yourself and then do them. Get out of your chair. Give yourself a gold star for doing something you didn't want to do. Check in with us every day and read what others are doing. Stay in the moment and take life one day at a time. Read a book about habits (I recommend "Better Than Before" by Gretchen Rubin".)
