Question for you all. Are any of you or do any of you know avid readers who are dyslexic? I ask because my niece is dyslexic and likes to read, but is being discouraged from being a "reader," because she reads slowly and it's "hard." I don't want her to think that just because of these things, she can't be a reader. But, if it's truly not likely to happen, I'd like to know that. I just don't want to believe it.
That’s such an out-dated idea. DH is dyslexic, and has always been an avid reader! He reads fiction, science and fact. He reads on his kindle app several times a day. And reads far more books than I do, these days.2 -

I don’t believe it’s dumb to love and encourage a child to try their best to do what they love and makes them happy. We never held our son back .When he wanted to play baseball,we signed him up.A couple people who were aware of his issues suggested he play soccer or Something with a Bigger ball. You are doing the best thing for her.Shoot, some of the smartest and most accomplished people have had to overcome some pretty challenging things.

Happy birthday to the United States Marine Corps!
"On November 10th, The United States Marine Corps Birthday commemorates the establishment of the Continental Marines. The United States Marine Corps, a branch of the United States Armed Forces, is responsible for providing power protection from the sea. They use the mobility of the United States Navy to deliver combined-arms task forces rapidly. The Continental Congress first established the Continental Marines on November 10, 1775, leading up to the American Revolution. Two battalions of Marines fought for independence both on land and at sea."
Terri - I enjoyed your poem! It evokes a feeling I've missed deeply since moving back to Texas from New Mexico.
Machka - My favorite sport is crosscountry skiing, followed by swimming and canoeing. Unfortunately, none of those are readily available to me where I live, and nothing else has quite filled the gap although we can go canoeing if we do some planning and hauling. I do enjoy walking around our little town and looking at the architecture, and sometimes Luna and I drive out to the county park to walk in the woods.
Snowflake - LOL! Your post is exactly why it works well for fat me to delegate the grocery shopping to Philip. He buys all kinds of junk food, but at least he hauls it straightaway to his office and leaves only the stuff for the planned meals in the kitchen.
Tina - I don't know what your error message means, but now I'm curious as to what the "non-vanilla" comments might look like!
I found the crepini with cauliflower at Costco. So now I need to go back and remind myself what to do with them!

Did Kathy Smiths Peel Away the Pounds Pilates DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do one segment of a 10MS Fitness Ball Workout then take the extremepump class.
Barbara – yes, they used the cuff on me at the doctor’s office. Now we have a machine at home and last night it was WAAYY down. I don’t remember who mentioned it, but thanks for telling me about the bp journal. I’ve started it. It’s nice in that it also gives the time, the date, everything, and you can put in notes
Took my girlfriend to the Greensboro Newcomers. She admitted that the only reason she went was because we were friends. When we left she kept gushing and gushing about how great it was, the people are her age, how friendly everyone was. I’m glad that I took her. She really didn’t have any friends here, hopefully, she’ll make some.
Well, it looks like we’re going to have our Christmas on Jan. 4. That seems to be the best day for Jess and Denise to be here.
While I was gone Vince put out the “fence”, changed the landscape lights and got out the rugs for in the house

Tina I have been in education for over twenty years and have taken courses on strategies to help those with dyslexia to learn how to read. The most important thing to remember is that dyslexia has no effect on intelligence. It just means the person processes information in a unique way. Using phonetic methods is a useful tool. Anytime reading can be taught combining visual, listening, and writing the words out as they are sounding them out also helps.
Being given tests using oral directions rather than reading is helpful. Using different colored backgrounds rather than white can also help too. You can get colored acetate to cover a paper to change the background might help. You might need to experiment which color works best.
Tests that minimize reading helps. If it a math test with excessive reading. Reading the test aloud helps.
Matching tests using capitals and not lower case. Using a paper so it covers the other words on the page so the reading is not so overwhelming.
For someone with dyslexia reading can be a challenge. Give the right methods and encouragement some with dyslexia will read.
It is important to appreciate the other strengths the person with dyslexia has like artistic, athletic, kindness.
Dyslexia does not define a person.
Another thing you could do is just read to her and share your love of reading with her. If you are reading with her. You read a sentence and then have her read a sentence so the flow of the reading is fast enough that the meaning of what you are reading does not get lost. It is sometimes such a struggle just to figure the words out that the meaning of what is being read gets lost and that can cause someone to get discouraged with the reading process.
As in any learning the more it can be associated with being fun and enjoyable the more successful a student is to be with the process.

I know of two people that have dyslexia and are avid readers. When someone is reading to themselves silently it doesn’t matter how fast or slow you are. I would encourage her.4 -
NYKaren enjoyed the memes, is that your beautiful golden tree? Here in the evergreen forest, not much fall color, but someone down the road planted this ornamental. Makes me smile every time I drive past. Machka love your garden, have the same mini greenhouse but it only has a few cold season seedlings trying to sprout. That is a gorgeous pergola! So glad your husband has this garden to enjoy and the skills to bring forth those fruits and veggies!
Lanette is your Kitchenaid a food processor or a stand mixer or ???
Glad to see you posting Katla and hope you're all better now.
Tina in CA, don't know about dyslexia but the elementary schools here have a program where children can read to dogs (trained and accompanied by a handler). The hardest part for the handler is to stand back and not interfere. The children seem to get all the encouragement and patience they need from the dogs who of course hang on every word and are not in a hurry. Oops now I see she's home schooled/tutored. Do they have a pet she could read to? Keep up the loving encouragement, even from so very far away.

Who is discouraging her?
I'm mildly dyslexic, and I don't read quickly, but I love to read and have adopted many strategies to compensate.

Barbara
This was that area last year ... the grape vine had taken over everything.
So my husband cut it back and it's regrowing. Hopefully we'll be able to direct it in a more organised manner that won't threaten to make the pergola collapse. But I miss all the leaves!
He also extended the veggie area a bit.
I spotted that mini greenhouse in our local Bunnings and we got it. It wasn't expensive and got quite a number of plants started this year.
This is looking up the other way. Our house is on quite a slope so the garden has many layers.

Heather & Bananas: Bone health does have to do with estrogen, and also with weight bearing exercise. Walking is one of the very best ways to get high quality bone strength. My doctor has put me on a course of bone density medicine after I fractured both wrists in unrelated falls. I am still taking this medicine and bone scans have shown improvement in my overall bone density.2

Hello everyone.
Here’s to a great work and adventure week. System conversion testing for the next 10 days will keep me on my toes. Conference calls are scheduled for 8:30 am and 6:00 pm. I would like to know who decided these times would be best. Considering I am usually in the office between 7-7:30 am it is going to be few long days for me.
Heather – Legends of the Week! It’s a wonderful recognition.
Terri – Love your poem. It captures the feeling of the approach of winter.
Yvonne – It seems many cities across the country are revitalizing town centers. It’s interesting we move so far ahead only to bring back things that were once commonplace. I certainly enjoy the green markets here and am looking forward to visiting the ones in my vicinity. With the summers being so hot here many do not hold them and most are starting up now. And, thank you for your “days” post. You had me singing Steve Martin’s “King Tut” last week.
RvRita – Feel better. You seem to be having many prescription challenges. Have you spoken to a pharmacist? Most doctors know what to prescribe, but not all of the effects and when and what you should be taking during specific times of the day. That is some web!
Michele – Wow, that is some holiday drama! I am such a beast I would probably say, “if you decide to come, let us know when you plan on arriving, if not, we will have a great time without you”. I hope the temporary bridge holds until the permanent one comes in.
Okie – Charlie and I used to have the same tradition. Small token gifts for the holiday and purchasing of something special during a trip. My favorite part of Christmas was always the stocking. It’s something from childhood and it was amazing how much my mom could put in to such a small package.
Sue – I was once employed by a Traveling Nurse placement service. The company would actually set up everything prior to the nurse’s arrival. You may end up making more money registering with a few companies versus renting directly to the nurses. Hope you made it out alive of Ikea. I always feel trapped in the store here, but definitely get in tons of steps wandering around.
Rori – Glad to hear Mars is on the mend. He will be back to his normal self. Cats certainly know how to care for themselves and never have a problem sleeping! It’s great you are continuing to get out with friends.
Lanette – Love the puppy and kitty picture. I took one look and thought, “I know who the Alpha is around that house”.
Barbie – Human nature is a funny thing – we hate change. Yet, once we go through change we enjoy the results. It seems like you have a great dance class.
Tracey – Oh, the snow! I can honestly say I still do not miss it. Beautiful though. Please share the ornament pictures as you progress with the huge order!
Tina – I hope the hike, the fresh air, and quiet helped you with your decision. It’s amazing what an hour or two out in nature can bring to the surface. Keep us posted.
serevogal0724 – Thank you for sharing the pic of you and your puppy – LOL. I agree with you record everything, every day. I am seriously incorporating eat to live, not live to eat.
Carol – It sounds like you are having fun breaking in your new kitchen gadget. I hear mixed reviews about air fryers. It seems like you have a good experience with them.
Ginny – Enjoy the chair. It’s a great piece and I love the color.
Kim – I love the swim too. We have a pool in the community and not once over the summer did I use it which was due to my weight. I just found out we have a swim center near me just on the edge of town that costs $1.25 per swim which may be an option for me when it gets too cold here.
Lisa – I am glad you were able to get DH to open up a little. Love the progress you’re making on the homestead. It looks like a peaceful place.
Found an excellent article on MFP titled, “6 Weight-Loss Tips Dieticians Warn Against”. It contains some very real advice regarding some common practices when it comes to weight loss.

Monday --
I took a day off work because we had other things on today and it was just too complicated to try to juggle both.
First, my husband and I went to the local brain injury association for a forum/meeting to discuss some projects coming up over the next year. That went from 10:30 - 2:30 with a break for lunch.
These meetings give my husband a chance to meet and associate with others who have had brain injuries or strokes. He feels less alone with his symptoms. And it sounds like we'll both be involved with things in coming months.
Then we walked 1.7 km to our physio and had our Pilates class. The focus was on my hamstrings!
Then a walk to the bus stop ... and home a bit early. The walking total was 4 km.
Oh also ... today is the first day of my Spring/Summer course so I've logged in and read through the first module. Looks interesting!! But I'll work on it later.
I've been dead tired all evening. Still trying to recover from the medication.

SuziQ-flowers are beautiful. I worked in a greenhouse while in college but never learned anything about arranging. Just love fresh flowers.
Amber Tx -I remember my kids outgrowing shoes overnight. We didn’t buy them the “expensive” shoes until they were in high school and sizes started stabilizing.
Auntiebk- I kept the congregation meeting to 30 minutes and nothing tricky! My last congregation meeting as council president (I was doing my happy dance!) At December council meeting we elect new president.
Machka-garden looks lovely and peaceful.
BananasandOranges -23 contact hours is a huge teaching load. I have done that in the past when dependent upon adjunct pay. Good luck with that schedule.
Regarding dyslexia -there are many successful people who have this and it has not hampered their lives-keep encouraging every child to read!
Spent yesterday watching football and wrapping Christmas presents for grandkids in Arizona. I actually buy all of their presents here, wrap them, put them in boxes and pay outrageous shipping prices. I could just order on Amazon and get free shipping to their house and let parents wrap them but I believe I would miss out on part of my enjoyment. I admit, I go a bit overboard with Christmas gift giving at times (maybe due to growing up poor), but I really enjoy it. Don’t really care if I get anything. Have work gifts bagged up and ready to go. Need to work on son and DIL in Arizona so I can get boxes shipped, then son and girlfriend. Stepson and DIL have not given me list for them and their boys yet but on the whole in very good shape for Christmas this year.
Spending day off working on budget for work, been so busy lately I haven’t had time to really focus. It’s about 37 million so takes a bit of thinking. Don’t mind doing that from home—can putter around and take break when I want to.
Going to run to store to pick up a couple of basics, do pt stretches and get ironing out of the way before starting budget. Expecting our first accumulating snow later today (1-3 inches).
Have a good Monday all,
Ginny in Ohio

Oooof! Good morning all! Rolled out of bed late this morning; so didn't get my exercise or walk in. Didn't sleep well last night (which I imagine is why I slept in this morning). My phone rang at 2 in the morning, it was Tim; he was at the gas station and locked his key in the car, *groan*; Colin heard my phone and grabbed my car keys and went to help Tim. AFter that, I woke up every hour on the hour (sometimes on the half hour). I wasn't sure why, until I got up at 5:30 and saw stuff everywhere. Tim was a busy bee last night; doing Idontknowwhat- but it was all over the kitchen table. I hopped in the shower and by the time I got out and dressed, everything was picked up. Whew!
I am going to sign off and hop on the scale. I have a feeling it will not be pleasant. I was a naughty girl this weekend and had some chips and cheese, wine, and other things that have no business in my body. *sigh Oh well, life goes on. ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)8 -
Kelly, Sounds like Tim marches to the beat of his own drummer. I'm cut out of the same cloth! People might think it a bit eccentric to do a project in the middle of the night. The number one rule is Don't Disrupt Your Partner's Sleep. It would be hard for me to leave the house to get gas or go shopping in the wee hours because the dogs, pack animals that they are, would sound the alarm. (((Hugs)))

Tending to doggies and little home chores this afternoon.
First babysitting gig with Lilliana late afternoon. Cannot wait! Lilliana's dad is keeping everyone in stitches with "Star Log" entries on FB describing the experiences they are having with a newborn. Big diaper blowout a couple of nights ago. His recounting was hilarious. So great to approach parenthood with humor. I'll post a couple of his entries below so you can enjoy them:Star log date 11/6/19
We have brought aboard a strange being that we have named 'Lillybell' though upon further reflection this being may be the fabled Malwrath, destroyer of sleep, spoiler of diapers, miniature banshee, demander of cuddles, seeker of boobs. The being appeared pleasant almost sweet at first, yet as night sets in a mysterious transformation takes place. The being becomes more alert and enters a phase in which if not being held sends out a wailing alarm. We have had to post shifts of guards to attend this task but with a crew of two it is taxing on both the mind and body. I will update more later on our seemingly nocturnal new companion.
Star date 11/8/19
Much progress has been made with the small tyrant we brought on board 4 days ago. The introduction of a special "formula" combined with latching of the small creature to my partner's breasts seems to have sated the beast inside her substantially. After her size had dropped 14% it was decided to supplement the small ones diet with this "formula". The yield has been significant, not only does the small being seem better hydrated but she also seems calmer with less frequent screeches of displeasure. The combination has also seemed to make her sleep more which has been a great relief to the crew. Life seems to be finding a new more tolerant pattern already. More to follow with exciting adventures in laundry changes and diaper duty.
Stardate 11/9/19
Last night shots were fired as the small being made a retaliatory strike. While the crew thought all was going well the small being was devising a plot that would require all the crew to repair. At 3am as the change of guard and a feeding was to occur the obligatory checking of the drawers began. What was found was a mess that had breached not only the inner protective shielding but also the second decorative layer. I was forced to act quick and call in my partner for back up as I assessed the full extent of the breach. As I removed the inner most shielding the terror redoubled its effort as the small being expressed discontent by evacuating more foul. Back up arrived and swift action was taken, a special tool deemed C.H.U.C.K.S was laid down to contain further mess and the beast was stripped down. Wailing and flailing the small creature attempted to spread her foul further but we countered with a grand blow from the baby wipe. Many baby wipes were implicated to counter the full extent of the small ones devastating retaliation but my partner was able to whisk away the contaminated gear. As the dust settled and the clothes were rinced it seemed a tentative truce had been reached. Feeding was able to commence and as the changing of the guard occurred laundry was put on.
The crew has learned a valuable lesson and are now always on guard for a similar act of aggression, but in the end we celebrated a small victory in this new journey.

Ginny - Terrible part is Velcro is best for toddlers who likes to untie every shoe in the house run 🏃 a lot. Velcro in these older kid sizes are exspensive! $17 a piece! The light up shoes y non- light ups were the same price they charge for the Velcro like it’s darn gold!!! Oh well soon enough he’ll be my shoe size in first grade will be able to tie shoes lol 😂 then I can buy cheaper ones.
Shotzz- Dyslexics can read very well with time. When us adults try to help until they get something down pact all kids naturally take it as I’m stupid you think I can’t do it. Problem is not helping them letting them continue mispronouncing a word is worse later on. At least she’s homeschooled with a good tutor. Public School offer classes for Homeschoolers like Band or a math class. Wish they did this in my day luckily they do now so can homeschool all day then go for an hour or two to public for a few classes in almost every state y school system now. Can also take city school programs for computers etc for a fee. I know a lot of homeschoolers be took chemistry at the high school everything else at home. One was in Band at middle school then homeschool rest of the day later took health classes there too.
