Oh Machka, I would love to, but there’s no money for such things. Every month I pick which Bill will be paid in full the others get a partial; thanks to Barbie I pay a couple now each month in full because I make better choices, but I still don’t pay them all. Everything generated in the month gets paid but it’s making up for three years with very limited income after I got laid off. For me a vacation is a half-day in my backyard not working.5

Well ... several Christmases, my husband had to work right through but I had some time off, so I created my own little "boot camp". I spent half my days exercising like mad ... walking, running, cycling, lifting my weights ... and then the other half of the day cleaning, organising, food prepping, and all those things I don't usually have time for.
It wasn't very Christmassy, but it did accomplish something.

Hi Gals,
I have one more person to ask but it looks like I’ll be alone on Thanksgiving and maybe Christmas too… I HATE this time of year. I want nothing more than to be with people who like me, and there are plenty – but my friends are not includers, and/or who have family in other areas so are headed here or there. I even have tried to host something and no one is interested. I think I’ll clean the garage.
Kim from N. California
I agree. This is a very tough time of year for many. If you were here you could come along with me. Last year I hosted, asked a few friends and only one accepted. Told him to bring his single friends and ended up with 6 at dinner with the most mismatched group ever. We all had a grand time.
A few years ago I volunteered to be a server at a shelter. It certainly helped with the loneliness and by the end of the day it felt good to give back to the community. I lucked out in my search for organizations. There is one very close by to me that makes it a complete day. The homeless and economically challenged come in and receive many services. There were stations for haircuts, nails, clothes, shoes, personal care products, children's booths, general wellness checks, etc.
Have you ever used MeetUp? There may be some things going on locally for singles. I check it out periodically and have attended some nice events.
I really can appreciate when you say your friends are not includers. I have slowly shifted those to surface friends. I mean how many times can one say I have no where to go and not be invited? I may be selfish saying that, but any time anyone has said to me I do not have any plans or no one is going to be in town I always extend an invitation if I have something going on. Sorry I rant.......
Big hug to you Kim.

Carol ... your NSV is huge! Congratulations!
I am procrastinating ... decided to catch up on all of your posts instead of going outside to clear the 8" of snow that decided to fall last night. Sigh. It's begun...

Hi everyone! Thought I'd check in early today. Well, it seem as if holidays have changed over the last 50 yrs. I remember family holidays together growing up, where everyone chipped in. You didn't hear about people being alone. I know the early yrs. my husband and I would take the kids to both sides of the family. My DIL doesn't lie to plan too far in advance and dinner is usually untraditional. I just sit back. There are some good ideas.
Right now I have a cough and we are having a group get together tomorrow. Hope it all works out.

Looking at temperature. 8 degrees F. More like January weather. We have had a dusting of snow. Some slick roads but nothing like out east. I am glad I got our and our son's home gardens covered with leaves before this hit. I told son this is the very reason you do this up here. We can get brutal cold like it is now and with no snow cover and it kills the perennials. We hopefully will hit 40 this weekend with no snow on the ground so I can mulch in the last of the leaves into the yard. I used to rake up the leaves put some on the gardens and rest to compost site. Now I mulch as much as I can into the yard. Saves time and a fertilizing.2

Good morning ladies
Barbara AHMOD - the Kitchenaid is the mixer. My BFF will gladly take it and I'm pawning off other stuff on her this morning, lol. What she doesn't take will go to the senior center thrift shop.
Kim - (((hugs))). I know there are many folks who enjoy being alone on the holidays and of course those, like you, who'd prefer a nice meal with people. You are always so kind and generous to others; I'm crossing my fingers someone comes through with an invite.
Our community is so neat, I see Thanksgiving buffets at local restaurants advertised (I bet singles show up and are seated with other singles) and several of the churches have a huge spread for anyone who wants to be with others for a meal.
Marianne WV - I too have many fond memories of Thanksgiving and Christmas meals at my grandparents house; Grandma would cook for days and have enough to feed an army. She'd always invite a neighbor or friend. We rather isolated farm kids always thought the "visitor" was fascinating. I'm grateful for those memories.
Carol - good for you getting a walk in with your Pom; glad your knee is getting stronger. Almost forgot to mention - Rosie the little schnauzer decided to take on the neighbor's Poms through the fence yesterday. I had no idea Poms were so fierce and Rosie's hackles were up and she was ready to draw blood (or so she thought). I think it boiled down to who could out-bark each other. I crawled through the bushes and pulled her away, lol.
Cleaner is coming this morning so I'm heading to town for allergy shots and run errands.
Thinking of all of you in the Midwest other areas experiencing "January" cold and snow already. Drive safely!
Make it a super day!

Kim, my dear friend... I agree with whoever said if it's possible and you can serve at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter on the day, there is a lot of balm to be had in giving to others. I hope the one possibility reaches out to you and welcomes you and your amazing heart to their home.
I wish you were nearer, but honestly, we won't be celebrating either holiday, just quietly relaxing at home. We just don't anymore. No kids, no grandkids here, and while my daughter will want us to drive up to Fort Riley, we'll be up in January for the birth of her third and final child, Levi, and that's enough for both of us.
We'll also be in Dallas about 4 hours south of us, on December 8 for a meeting I have to attend on the 9th, so Corey is burning his day of vacation there and on the four-day weekend between Christmas and New Year's, when I'll also be off. Won't be telling the daughter about that, or she'd want us to come up that weekend. Six and a half hours driving nearly due north, in the middle of winter, when we're going to turn around and do it again a few weeks later to meet the baby, just doesn't sound enticing somehow.
I chose not to go down the hill to the gym this morning, but have done all the laundry (well the bathroom and kitchen rugs are in the washer, but I don't dry them, just lay them back down to dry). Also vacuumed the entire house as well, and will call that good for today. Had issues for hours yesterday - TMI.So, I couldn't eat dinner last night, as I got a small piece of food turned sideways at lunchtime (for those who don't know me, I had a gastric bypass more than 14 years ago now, and occasionally I still forget to chew every piece of food to bits. They get stuck on the exit from the stomach to the intestinal system, which is apparently still about the size of a nickel across.) Anyway, I threw up for hours on end. Not to be cranky, but it's just exhausting. Only happens every five or six months, but always annoying, and leaves me with a stinker of a headache the next day. It's not like with normal people, as there's no stomach acid involved, but the reverse peristalsis is wearing when it goes on for too long, and yesterday was just too dang long. I've noted before that I made a deal with devil when I had that surgery. I don't regret it most of the time, and when I'm my normal self I'd do it again in a minute... but there are times I pay for it.
Time to get some work done - made good progress on my spreadsheet yesterday - and now I'm working on the PlanB spreadsheet. One must always have a planned B.

(((HUGS))) Lisa.
Went to my favourite supermarket this afternoon to get things I can't find nearby. I went in the rain, on the bus, with my wheeled bag. Came back with lots of goodies. A bit damp, but worth it.
We are dancing tonight, so I thought that was quite enough exercise for the afternoon session.
DH still complaining about his lower back, so I bought some Ibuleve and long acting Ibuprofen. He won't take it I'm sure, but I've been a good wife.
Having sea bass tonight on a bed of leeks, before we head off into the damp and dark.
Kim - Even though we have company for Christmas this year, (we don't always) , I still don't really like the holidays. I have no idea why, as they were happy enough when I was a kid. I would love to disappear, but DH isn't keen.
Right now I'm planning a visit to my son in Nottingham. I booked the hotel this morning on a cancellation basis. In December anything could happen, snow, strikes, etc, so I thought it was better to have a get out clause. I still have to decide which route I am going to use to get there . It is very much cheaper to book a train in advance, but I find I get anxious about the timings, so I'm not going to do that. I could go around London on a normal slow train, or take the fast to London and hop on the underground. Decisions, decisions!
Whatever I do, it's money. I am going to have to break into deep savings for the next cruise, so I will use holiday savings for this trip and just call it a holiday. It's over two years since I went up there and I have not seen where he is living with his girlfriend and her children. I haven't met his two teenage "stepchildren ". There are also three greyhounds in the house. I think he will appreciate me making the effort, even though I really can't afford it before Christmas.
We also have ended up doing some child minding duty this week. Tomorrow we are doing a school pick up and on Friday we are having Bea all day! This is because my DDIL is in media demand, doing podcasts etc up in London. Jealous? Moi?
On Saturday we have said we will go on an Autumn Trail in a stately home park. That is weather dependent, I guess.
Much love to all of you, Heather UK xxxxxxxx4 -
Hi Gals,
Thanks for all the love and suggestions! I’m done with the crying feeling sorry for myself, and it is time to move past that. I remembered how upset I felt with myself last year not getting my decorations up – so this year I am going to use Thanksgiving ! I’ll put up the outside decorations (they are minor) and all the inside decorations except the tree, (I still buy a real tree, which Mom and I will go cut down Friday after Thanksgiving*) and work on cleaning the garage. My favorite meal is breakfast, but late like 10:30 or 11, So I’ll plan a nice breakfast, and a crockpot dinner so I can work as much as I feel like. And since turkey and all it’s fixings is close to my least favorite meal, I’ll skip that! Cleaning the garage is something that I really need to get done, as I am hosting a wedding shower on January 11 and will have 20+ folks here, so will be converting the garage into additional eating/gathering space.
*For the newbies, my Mom lives in the area, but my brother lives with her. I am a domestic violence survivor and my brother is my abuser. My mother is very old fashioned and the men of the family are to be catered to. And it is not safe for me to be there, the last time I was in his presence he carried a loaded gun around. It was very scary.

Did Prevention’s Slim Strong and Firm DVD. I didn’t realize that it was all pilates, I must have put it in the wrong place because it was with my other strength tapes. Oh well…no harm done. The plan for tomorrow is to take the water class.
Whitewave – welcome back! With your back perhaps water exercise, even a bike, would be easier on your back?
Cut up the rice krispie bars for Vince and have them in the freezer for when I need them.
Barbie – I’d be more than happy to give your friend some weight!!!!
As far as Christmas: I believe Jess and Colby will be here then the next weekend Jess, not sure about Colby, Denise, Pete, Pete’s mother, PJ, Vince and me will be here. I’m thinking that I’ll invite some other people, like the lady across the street from me, her mother and her daughter. Her husband is deployed to Afghanistan until around March, Jess’ friend Amanda, her husband, son and MIL, my friend in Greensboro because I think she is somewhat lonely, not sure if Jess wants to invite anyone else. I’ll invite a friend and her husband of mine since they won’t be going to her grandson in Miami’s house along with the other two ladies who I usually play mahjongg with. I can’t invite one and not the others. Looks like we’ll have a housefull if everyone comes.
Almost at the weight I was before PJ was born. I’ve been trying to get rid of the stress weight I gained. Having that temporary bridge helped because I didn’t want to eat for fear that something might happen to the temp.
Speaking of the temp. bridge: I had the permanent one put in this morning. It’s going to take a while to condition myself that I can eat on that side of my mouth. Then we brought some of the Christmas totes into the house so I got a fair amount of steps in
Marianne – I agree, holidays have changed. When I was little we ALWAYS went to my grandmother’s on Christmas Eve then went to midnight mass. Now we have to have it another day. It always used to be only family, now we have friends too. But then again, to me Christmas is about sharing, I’m sharing my household (and Vince’s decorations) with others

Took me two hours of lopping to get the branch/brush pile down to burn barrel-ready size. Joe invited me to sit next to him, have a real beer, and enjoy the forest. Took him up on it, we had a good chat, but alas I then had a SECOND beer with predictable results, inadequate protein, too much sugar, too many carbs, too little activity, didn't even check in with you dear ones last night. Pfaugh!
Machka “our garden has many layers” something in that resonates, could be a meditation phrase. Lovely! Glad your DH has met others with TBI, so important. Keep us posted on the projects that appeal to you. I feel the nexus of your studies and the TBI association are leading you to great accomplishments.
Ginny con VERY grats for surviving your term as church council president. No mean feat!
Karen in VA Starlog, hahahahahahahahaHAH!
Carol ditto the others' “well done” on your mile walk. Brava!
Pip Yay Yogi!
Michele thanks for the benefits of baking for others. The tricky part for me is remembering all those goodies are “for OTHERS”
Thanks all for the fascinating articles (5 tips, deep sleep and Alzheimer's)
Kim Your Thanksgiving plans sound just right. As for Christmas, hope one of your neighbors will reciprocate for the cookies with an invite. Please tell us what are the 9 different kinds of Christmas Cookies? I always make my faves, holiday nut balls and almond crescents... maybe I should branch out a little... Keep safe and strong those boundaries! (hugs)
SuziQ “shifted those to surface friends” oh yeah.
Beth 8” of snow? Yeeish!
Lisa your holiday plans sound much like ours. Love your secret plans for the weekend between Christmas and New Year's, we won't tell! Plan B?
Today I will plan better eating, prep veggies, walk Tumble, finish the doggoned laundry, recycle on the way to the chiropractor, pick up post office goodies, start detailing the car and abstain from alcohol.
Lighter, lovelies!

Beth Winter is here . Right now it is snowing in the hudson valley, and downstaters are notoriously horrible drivers in this kind of weather. I'm anticipating a 2 hour commute home I do not like driving in snow and ice (who does?) but I will put on my big girl pants and just do it. It is truly the #1 reason I would retire if I could, just the ability to stay off the roads in this weather would be such a relief.
I made a delicious butternut squash soup and am enjoying it for lunches this week:
simply steam a butternut squash (in the instant pot it's a snap)
add some sauteed onion and garlic, then broth/milk and blend it up to your desired consistency.

I'm home from my regular walk. We didn't see very many people since many of our neighbors are "fair weather walkers" and it has been drizzling for hours. I am happy that my walking is not weather dependent--I walk every day no matter what the weather. Like Penny says, "There is no bad weather, just bad clothing.".
I have line dance related chores this morning, then we are going out to lunch with my dog walking friend. Jake got a big gift certificate to a great Thai restaurant as a birthday present and he wants to use some of it. Our friend is unfamiliar with Thai food and is looking forward to the experience. This restaurant is good about listing the ingredients in their dishes so you know a bit about what you're getting. I remember my first visit to a Thai restaurant and was excited to see favorite items like chicken, curry, bell pepper, and coconut among the choices.
Do any of you have a Kindle Oasis? Jake is considering buying one and I thought one of you might have useful insights about it.
Kim, It sounds like you have done some good thinking and made some good choices about how to deal with the holidays. I hope you find the peace and joy you seek.
I plan to roast a turkey just for us and use the leftovers for soup that I can freeze. If I lived alone I'd do the same thing and have more leftovers and more soup. So far, my store has no turkeys but they have cleared a space in freezer aisle for them.

I've been on maintenance for a few years now and I have noticed my weight creeping back up. I discovered a neat thing to do in mfp regarding entering food. I used to think I could only consume a full serving of whatever I was eating. I'll use peanut butter for example. A serving is 32 grams. You can change it to 1 gram and then enter however many grams you want and mfp recalculates the calories. I don't need to be a math wiz. Everybody probably already knows this but it's exciting news to me.

Lisa your holiday plans sound much like ours. Love your secret plans for the weekend between Christmas and New Year's, we won't tell! Plan B?
Barbara AHMOD - the plan B is a work thing, having to do with presenting a completely different possible funding for a multi-year grant to a funder who definitely has the money to do it, but it will take some selling. I am meeting this week Thursday with the Alphabet Soup gang (CEO, CFO and CSO of my organization) to present them with scenarios including A, A.1, and B. One part of the job I truly enjoy is tweaking one thing that takes a completely different journey to the same, or even better destination. Carving that down to a single slide or graph is where it gets tough, but still fun.
Re: our stolen four-day weekend between Christmas and New Years, we might do something completely off our beaten path and go up to Branson or something in between Christmas and New Years. Cheesy and fun. Or, and what's much more likely, we'll just cocoon at home and enjoy our time together before the chaos of the new baby trip in mid-January. Even ten years later, I'd still rather spend seven days with him than anything else I can think of.
Later y'all,

2 pm here and got what I needed to do got 20.00 knocked off my cable bill, picked up ans installed a wall coat rack and put a new shower head on,but in doing that last bit, wacked my pinkie on the side of shower and I am guessing broke the first joint,,, it hurts really bad,and is warm but not yet turning black and blue lol.. was out at 8 am raking the leaves on my patio under the stairs before the wind rain and snow come,, picked up my meds at pharmacy and my DD wanted me to move the dog bed away from the radiator so as not to catch on fire.. so stopped and did that..3

NYKaren – you think downstaters are terrible drivers????? You’ve never been to the South when it’s snowed. I swear, people don’t have a clue how to drive in it. Oh, how I love butternut squash (really, just about any vegetable). Can’t wait to get my IP. I read somewhere that you can make a butternutsquash in the IP in 10 minutes. Boy, am I looking forward to that!'

Allie- Ouch! I hope your finger isn't broken.
I am not a fan of the holidays. I don't exactly know why, because I don't have bad memories of them. I think it's because they have become so commercialized here in the States that they lost their original meaning. I also haven't lived near family in 30 years and I think that makes a big difference. In this city, so many people are just rude and stressed. I avoid going out to shop at all costs and the over playing of holiday music makes me nuts. We cannot even go to the theater and see a play that is not holiday focused. And let's face it, there aren't that many and I've seen them all. My family calls me a scrooge and I own that. We always get invited somewhere for Thanksgiving once they find out we don't have plans. Sometimes I accept. Sometimes I stay home. No one misses me if I'm not there. This year, I think I'll paint the ceilings in the house. This sounds kind of sad when I re-read it, but I just don't put much focus on this time of year. I'd rather spend my energy and money on travel.4 -
[/b]Heather[/b] I had to look up pomegranate molasses, never having cooked with it, but it sounds tasty. Next time I am at my mid-eastern market, I will look for it. I can imagine it will bring another level of flavor to a lot of dishes.
Michele I'm sure you will love your Instant pot, just know that the timing for many recipes doesn't always include the time it takes for the pot to come to pressure. For instance, it took my IP ten minutes to come to pressure and then 10 minutes to steam the squash, also takes time to quick release or natural release. Don't mean to sound like a downer, but the instant pot isn't instant! but the results really are great once you get the hang of it.
My drive home was really not that bad, and I saw a pileated woodpecker--gorgeous--along the way.
Staying warm and cozy this afternoon, under the covers on the couch.

Had a pretty much perfect evening - just what we moved to Hove for.
The dance class was the Shim Sham, and was, for us, a much needed revision. Great fun, very energetic, and a good class with some new people.
Afterwards we went to the boutique brewery nearby and had some great beer. We struck up conversations with a couple sitting near us and then we spied my son's neighbour. We couldn't remember his name, but asked him if he was Henry's dad! He came and joined our table. Great fun.
Then we came home and watched Rick Stein's TV series on Secret France. Lots if lovely food and wine and a celebration of French food culture, including the multi generational Sunday Lunch.
Just about perfect.
I don't know what it is about Hove, but it is really easy to get a conversation going with complete strangers. Maybe it's living by the sea.
Lots of love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx3 -
Looking forward to the Mr Rogers Neighborhood movie with Tom Hanks. Mr Rogers was such a fascinating thing to watch when I was a child. I think I trusted everything he said, like he was my own father💖.
Still waiting for activity to happen with youngest son. I contacted the ombudsmen and they put in a welfare check for him. Yes it will be embarrassing for him, but at least I will hear from him. I did it out of love and concern. I have already accepted that might call mad at me, then so be it. In my heart I feel its the right thing.
My Montana sister called yesterday really upset and crying, husband still has home on the market that they just moved into 8 months ago. Husband had sent a text message that the realtor would be coming by this Wednesday. So mad at husband for not letting her in, on his whole thought process. She has moved with him 10 times in their 8 years together. most men do not form attachments to homes like we women do. Its a place, but we make it home. Hopefully she and him can talk this thru.💖.
My middle son's birthday was on Veteran's Day. This is his last year to use his military (reserves) ID card as its expiring soon. Hopefully he got some free meals and had a nice day off. He turned 25. Hard to believe. Athena turned 6 months old.
I have been using the wedding ring method of weight loss. Haahaa! It involves me putting on my ring every morning, and if its loose than I know I'm doing good. If its a bit snug, I cut back some. If its tight, I drink more water! Lbs wise it keeps me on target.👍. I still get on the scale weekly though.

Now heading to the golden arches for a fundraiser. Not the brightest spot to my day. BUT I've got food at the house that I can eat when I get there. Silver Linings everywhere if you look!
Happy Tuesday!3
