Too blustery for burning today so plan B: prep for firehall meeting, reschedule Joe's appointment, re-up for BB&B and follow up with the electrician... all before even one sip of wine! Done but let myself spend way too much time on firehall stuff to the detriment of relationships and healthy habits. Overindulged in wine and cookies, passed on opportunity to walk with Joe and the pooches, worst calorie overage in recent memory. Feel like crap.

Wednesday will go to BB&B and therapeutic massage, puppy sit while Joe goes to eye Dr., then dash to fire dept board meeting, abstain from alcohol AND cookies.

Lisa this grant researching/learning curve is making me happy. It's something I can get lost in doing (witness Sunday morning), so hope I can get good at it. Might provide some purpose I've been missing since retirement. Now to develop some balance... ;)
    Heather Happy Anniversary!

KJ love the stone soup and bread lesson. Those are some lucky kids!
Julie a burn barrel is an empyy, 50 gallon steel barrel like those used for oil, but with holes drilled in the sides for ventilation. Use for burning yard waste, trash etc. We don't burn trash as that produces noxious chemicals, but we do burn brush and branches, necessary to reduce the fuel load in this wildfire-prone country. So glad you found that nearby park for refreshing walk breaks.
Pip love the pic, is that Kirby's sister?
Yvonne indoor plumbing frequently tops my gratitude list. Congrats on jeans falling down :)
Vickie is your niece in a safe place now?
Katla funny (not haha) how our perspective can change, so we're hoping your DGS has the flu... :} Keep us posted about the mole?
Allie extra hours make nice paychecks, but please remember to take good care of yourself and sleep.
Margaret no chronic illness here, but imho the medical mindset has not yet incorporated mental illness into its chronic illness system. Shameful after all these years.
Rori thanks for sharing about the social worker consultation and surfer's ear. Hearing loss can be such a contributing factor to dementia. :`( Is the VA facility near you? (((hugs)))
Annie in DE congrats on the PT and planks!
Sue in WA “...without an advocate...” Thunk.
Michele “got it (your quarter round) done” Hooray! After 6 years waiting. Hip Hip Hooray!
    Machka “heart ultrasound” ?

I missed a day and I'm finding it hard to catch up.

Skimmed a few pages, hugs to those who have lost friends/relatives and to those who are generally having a hard time at the moment.

Taking our dog to the vet's this afternoon for blood tests, poor little girl is so itchy, she had made hereself sore. She is on a grain free diet, and we thought it was under control, but it has flared up recently and we can't think why. It's going to cost a fortune but fingers crossed it will be worth it.

The kitchen is still not finished, waiting for the electrician to connect everything, at least we have a working sink and hot water! I am a bit worried that he is not getting in touch, the joiner has messaged him as well. I'll give him until tomorrow, then I'll try ringing him. I don't want to get another electrician in to finish off the work, but I will if I have to!

    Happy Anniversary Heather

Viv - can you buy Benadryl cheaply? Our little dog had a flea treatment and anti-itch baths, but still scratches all the time - vet said possibly dry air with woodstove and/or furnace, or other allergens including flea allergy of course. He suggested Benadryl (diphenhrdramine).

At any rate, our 13 lb dog gets half a 25 mg benadryl three times a day, I hide it in her little treat and she gulps it down. We sure can tell the difference. Costs pennies a day. Rule of thumb is 1 mg per lb of dog's weight.

Glad you at least have a working sink and hot water, what frustration though with the electrician not showing up. :(

    :) Two suggestions:
Don't drink your calories (have water instead of beverages with calories)
Look at the items with high sugar content and substitute something with protein and minimal or no sugar

Margaret: My husband has had diabetes since he was 18 or 19. He had awful symptoms and his family doctor said he had leukemia. He visited his veterinarian and got the correct diagnosis-it was diabetes. He is now 72 and doing very well handling the diabetes, but has other autoimmune problems along with it, including digestive problems and MS. Our grandnephew also has diabetes, as does our granddaughter. As to the same problems as you— We’ve been lucky enough to get good medical care that is appropriate for our family members. Your situation seems to be a bigger challenge. From an outsider’s pov, your son has not always been treated with respect by authorities. We see a lot of homelessness in the Portland metro area. Some of those people are adventurers, but others have family problems &/or mental health problems. You are your son’s best gift and advocate. You actively step in and give him loving support. “The system” doesn’t seem to help people with challenges enough, if at all. :broken_heart::heart:

Sue & Barbara: The mole is gone, and I have a little round bandage. The skin specialist said the mole was benign. Thanks for your concern.

Meg from Omaha: I’ve missed you! I am delighted to see you posting again. :flowerforyou:

Viv: Good luck with your pup. :star:

Rori: I am delighted with the support your DH is getting from the VA. Good news for both of you!!! :star::heart:

Lisa in AR: “Happy, healthy and got one of my grands quilts free motion quilted and ready to bind. . .” WTG!!!

Heather: Happy Anniversary! What a gorgeous plate. :star::heart:

DH and I have appointments for haircuts today. I’ve needed one for a long while and look forward to managing my mop-top.

:)Heather, Happy Anniversary. I am in complete agreement with you about buffets. I eat intentionally so I want to have a plan of what to eat and not wander endlessly making choices.

:)Rori, that is great news that you have found a source of support and help for dealing with the challenges that your husband has.

:)Katla, I love going with my husband to get our hair cut. He goes twice as often as I do, so sometimes he goes alone and goes very early in the morning while I'm still out walking the dogs.

:) Our life continues to be peaceful here which is great for us, but gives me little to talk about. I am thrilled that I treated myself to an extra tier of cable TV channels so now I can watch a lot of figure skating. Since I ride my exercise bike and knit while watching TV, it's a winning activity for many reasons. I knit hats for myself and friends and to give to charity and blankets for Project Linus.

:) Jake just got his new Kindle Oasis to replace the Kindle he bought six years ago. He reads with it every day. The new one is bigger and easier to see. Also the battery charges faster and stays charged for much longer. He was delighted to see that it was easy to get all his books transferred to his new Kindle from the old one. I showed him how to check out e books from the library to read on the Kindle. I have a Kindle app on my phone to read e books and he thought that he'd have to do that to check out e books from the library.

Smell Grateful for the smell of Onions and Garlic when I'm making dinner
Technology Grateful for the ability to look things up when I can't remember them...at the touch of the laptop or phone
Color Grateful for the bottle of blond hair color that makes me feel younger than I really am :D
Food Grateful for low carb/low sugar snacks that don't shoot my sugar up but make me feel like I am eating candy
Sound Grateful for the sound of my children's and grandchildren's voices...also the sound of Classical music which brings back wonderful memories

Still catching up! Welcome Newbies!! Hope everyone is okay! My suggestion for the holidays this year: Try to eliminate one holiday activity that stresses you out and replace it with one that makes you happy!

Happy Wednesday. Well when I got home last night found out our heat was not working. DH had to work late so DOS came over and tried to figure it out. But he said it was to new, we just had it put in new in 2013. So he brought over a sun heater for us and it kept things warm during the night. DH is home waiting for the repair man this morning and I pray that it is nothing to serious. Weather is changing today and going to be cooler the next couple days with rain.

Rori--Glad your VA appointment went well.

Sue--Please let me know how the dog toy works out. Our dear Oscar tears them up in a matter of days.

    Heather--Happy Anniversary!

Did Elle Glam’s Total Toning DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do Joyce Vidral’s Cougar Workout DVD.

Marianne WV – I many times only prelog my food before I eat it. Some people can prelog their dinner in the morning, I can’t. There are just too many things that can change that. But I have prelogged my dinners and come in over calories so I may substitute something, like, applesauce for a whole apple. Although the whole apple is better for you with more fiber, etc. , it’s usually a BIT higher in calories than the applesauce. I get the applesauce in the small cups and unsweetened and it’s usually around 50 calories. Personally (and this is just me) I don’t care for diet anything. To me, I have this “thing” about putting something artificial (sweetener) in my body. Give me a little of the real stuff or give me nothing. I will have the full fat mayo, but maybe only a tablespoon. Actually, fat is needed for your brain (I think it is). We almost never have iceberg lettuce. Vince (dh) says that’s what he likes, but I only give him romaine. It’s a LITTLE bit better. Not a whole lot, but a little bit is better than nothing. At least that’s the way I feel

One of the things I’ve found that are low in calories but filling are those snack size boxes of raisins. Sweet and only something like 45 calories. Also, those dried fruit strips, something like 45 calories. Asian pears are not bad in the calorie dept

One of the ladies that I play mahjongg with, her dog can’t have gluten. So I made these dog biscuits for her containing oat flour, oatmeal, egg, applesauce, and I put a bit of chicken broth in it to give it a little bit of flavor. She was saying that her neighbor came over and took a few for her dog. Dottie’s (the gal I play with) dog followed the neighbor to the door and was VERY disappointed when the dog didn’t get any. She couldn’t get over how her dogs loved them. That made me happy

Well, the guy finished the quarter round yesterday. Now I just have to cover up the nails with a bit of paint. That shouldn’t take very long.

Today is the last day for the antibiotic. Yippee! Still coughing a tiny bit, but nowhere near as bad as before. Going to the local community college’s school of cosmetology later this morning to get my hair washed, cut, styled, colored, and a chin wax. It’ll probably come to something like $55. I figure – hey, it’s only hair, even if they mess it up, it’ll grow out. And I’ll save myself some money.

You know, last night at Rummikub I started to wonder if there was something wrong with me. These ladies were talking about how they got their nails done and how it wasn’t that expensive etc. And I just kept thinking…why spend the money at all?

The guy who put up the quarter round just called. I didn’t realize that they have a minimum for how much to charge for small jobs. Had I known that, I probably would have found a few other things that could have been done around the house. Well, live and learn. In a way, it was probably a good thing that I didn't know. Otherwise, Vince probably wouldn't have wanted to spend the money ($100) but he doesn't have the nail gun so I would probably wind up waiting ANOTHER 6 years. I know, it isn't a lot of money. But he has this "thing" about paying someone to do something you can do yourself. But he really can't do it -- he doesn't have the gun.

Allie – I do hope you get to go to Alabama. I would think Tom would watch Alfie for you.

Kelly – question – what is a good age for getting a child a toy box? Vince and I are at odds about it. I say we should get one for PJ for Christmas. Vince says to wait until he’s 1. I say he’ll get toys (I know we’re giving him some) and it’ll be good to have some place to put them rather than just randomly around the house. What are your thoughts?

Got my hair colored, washed, blow dryed, and a chin wax. Was $30. Looks pretty good if I do say so myself. Then went to buy gas and got Vince a sodoku book for Christmas, then to Food Lion. They have sweet potatoes on sale for 29 cents a pound. Vince also needed soda which I had a raincheck for but I was only able to get 2 bottles, so got the raincheck for the remainder. Ceramics tonight. Want to stop at Publix.

This morning I had my semi-annual eye doctor appointment, at least the testing part of it. I see the doctor in a couple weeks. I hate that visual field test with a passion. The machine grunts and moans and gives you a couple of flashes and the tech has to come in and adjust it. The results will probably tell them I'm blind. Haha. After I hit the grocery store I spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing.

I'm starting to think ahead to time off over Christmas and travel. I'm off for 16 days and we'll go away for a few of them. I've booked peace and quiet!! I hope! :) Hopefully there will be some beach time too, both at home (we live close to a beach) and away ... and cycling time!! It would be fabulous to be able to cycle and/or run/walk every day during those 16 days!!!

I'm also looking around for Christmas dinner options. A couple years ago we did a Christmas buffet for Christmas dinner and I loved it! That's the kind of thing I want again. :)

    Everything is booked!

And yes, we're going to a Christmas buffet at the biggest hotel in town. We had to book, and when I rang, it was filling up quickly.

    Here's the menu: :)

Buffets are rare here. You'll occasionally find one for Mother's Day and Christmas, and a few places might put on a breakfast buffet on Sundays in Summer or something like that. They are usually put on by hotels, and usually the somewhat more expensive hotels.

I think the last time I went to a buffet was Christmas 2017 although a hotel in Melbourne might have had one in February 2018.

How nice is that! When we arrived at the restaurant I told the waiter (who knows us) that it was our anniversary and he produced a couple of glasses of sparkling wine. :D At the end we got these truffles. The meal was its usual amazingness!! Never had food like that anywhere else.

    Greetings one and all.

It’s only been four days with some quick replies and I feel like I am a week behind. Tomorrow will be another food-filled day, it’s our Annual Thanksgiving Potluck at work. The company provides turkey and all of the fixings, in addition to pork roast. I am going to partake and will lean heavy towards the vegetable dishes so I have some calories for a sweet treat. One of the gals makes the best flan and I must have a taste of it. I am prepared for a very light breakfast and dinner.

Barbara – Love the Tumble and Shadow show. They are adorable together and it looks like the pups are getting along. Animals, like humans, have to take measure of each other.
Kenna – Welcome to a fine group of supportive and diverse women.
KJ – Wow, you are a minimalist! The bread looks wonderful. The kids are so lucky to have you!
Rita – I hope your pharmacist friend is able to help with the medications and it’s a timing thing versus another trip to the doctor’s office!
Pip – Yogi is adorable. He looks like such a happy pup.
    Changeisnoww – Welcome.
Machka – Thank you for the password information.
JanetR – Big hugs to you.
Kim – Looking forward to seeing some cookie pictures! What a nice tradition.
Heather – Glad the new route worked out. And, all agree with the financial plan.
Terre – Welcome back – looking forward to getting to know you. Congratulations on your permanent employment.
Amber – Great bargain shopping. Your little man certainly keeps you on your toes!
Meg – So sorry to hear about your dear friend.
Lanett – Love Dodo. When I get stressed at work, I pull up a video and it melts away.
    Suchaprettyface70 – Welcome.
Bananasandoranges – You have some schedule. Glad you found the walking path.
Yvonne – I will never look at my toilet in the same way. I always think about the poor souls without access to potable water and how difficult life could be if I was born in another place.
Vicki – Sorry to hear about your niece. Big hug. Hope the heater issue is just an adjustment.
Rori – Happy for you getting the support you and DH need. Hoping more good and support is on its way to you.
Annie – Yeah! No more PT!
Viv – Hope the kitchen is finished soon. It’s such a life adjustment while things are being redone – especially the kitchen!
Annie – What a great trip planned. And, a motivator to hit your goal.
Michelle – Glad you’re happy with the new do. Great price!

    Wishing everyone sparks of happiness.
