On the Third Day of Christmas,
my workout let me see,
three red leaves,
two lumbering cows and
a squirrel high up in a pine tree.
I was reading my Military Officers Association of America magazine today. It had an article about how 4 members maintain their drive to exercise. I had to laugh a little at the one guy. He's a body builder and has done some adventure races. Hes 39 years old and ends his section by saying "I'm always trying my best to set an example so young Marines know age is only a number." Somehow, I feel at 39 he has NO idea what that means yet. LOL But, I did like his final thought: "Age doesn't have to slow you down, but excuses always will." Now, I do feel there is a point where age will slow us all down, but I still like the sentiment.
I like "age doesn't have to slow us down, but excuses will..." My husband is 39 and a veteran. Two long deployments to Iraq (last one 14 1/2 months) and one in the horn of Africa for a year to train men to fight, how to defend themselves. Oh ma ma, you could have bounced a nickel off of his abs back then. Not an ounce of flab, perfection if muscles are your thing. Some keep the mindset and others probably are happy to dump it.
I hope I'm rocking into my 90's. I hope...
I made two vows when I retired from the Army:
I'm never going to run again; and
I'm never going to shave again.
At least I've kept one of them.5 -
@Camaramandy648 Hey, I love your determination! You can do this! Determination is huge in running and you need to be physically fit but believing in yourself is half the battle, just knowing that you can do it!
I'm going out phone in stroller and baby in it with orders for husband to answer the phone if it rains because we'll need a pickup. Second run of the day!
Funny, true story: I've mentioned before that my father in law has run hundreds of marathons, even a few double marathons over his lifetime. My sister in law runs marathons. My brother in law has run three marathons. He knows from his dad what it takes to run a marathon. In February he'll run his fourth, with me. I ran with him over the summer when we were all together; he quit long before I did on the run. My husband was talking to him on Christmas and he told my husband that Christmas Eve was the first time he'd run in months. But what's funny is that my husband said this is what his brother does before each marathon. I was also informed that he drinks beer the last two miles. Could this even be true!? So I could draw two conclusions from this: 1) He has great confidence in himself, even with a lack of training. 2) Attitude and the reason you are running is what matters (correct me if I'm wrong).
All that I am saying is that attitude and humor may, and I stress "may," go a long way.
Yes! Today on the trail, I had to keep telling
myself, “You are doing this because you WANT to!”
I keep trying to figure out what my problem has been the past couple of weeks but I think primarily it is my head. Sure, a few thing have not gone quite right and I am still learning what works for me, but I don’t have a good reason to be stopping just a few minutes in and then two hours later successfully run nonstop on a treadmill for thirty minutes while still feeling like I have more to give. I have to get over the mental barrier of that trail! Because throughout my weeknight runs I have run outside mostly just fine. This doesn’t make any sense!!!!
Tomorrow I’ll run an easy, shorter run so I can get over 30 miles in seven days. Maybe I’ll even feel more confident about the 5k nonstop and just do that again. Plus it’d get me over the mental barrier

I hope everyone who was not feeling well get better! Also love reading about everyone’s running adventures!
My news is that with today’s run I did run the year in km! 2046km to be exact! Also, ran 12.25 miles, my longest since my HM last fall. So pretty excited about that!9 -
@Camaramandy648 if there’s a high impact bra which doesn’t get sopping wet on a hard, sweaty long run, I haven’t found it yet. I like the Brooks Juno but it is usually soaking and feels awful by the end of a run. I feel like even with tech fabrics, wearing a shirt over it is going to prevent sweat from evaporating.

5 miles on the Greenline today. My husband is most of the way over his cold. He’s to the part where he whines about not being over his cold yet.
Back in my old shoes for the moment. The part of my quads that attaches to the inner knee has doms due to wearing my new shoes two days ago. Hmm. It’s probably not a good sign that I ended up with that much weird muscle fatigue from a short easy run. Since I got the shoes from REI I can return them up to a year from now, so once my legs feel normal again I’m going to give myself a few more chances to strengthen those muscles and see if the shoes work better when I’m used to them.
Apart from the doms it was a good run. The weather was over 70 degrees! It was supposed to pour down today but ended up not raining until after we got done, except for a few little spits which felt nice. The Christmas village was opening by the time we were done with our cooldown walk, so we went to visit our buddies at the petting zoo again. This time I got climbed on by a lemur!
Not shown: me trying to figure out how to get the lemur off my shoulder, while it clung to my neck and my husband laughed at me. Eventually my husband was able to coax it onto his hand and set it back where it came from. It discovered that he was covered in salt from sweating and licked his entire arm!
I also met a very nice camel!7 -

Very neat!
Animals / insects love us when we are sweaty and salty.
Example: Hackberry emperor butterfly at Shelby Farms in August.5 -

It might not be just salt though. Ever since I was diagnosed type 2 I get dozens of butterflies when I sweat. Apparently even when my glucose tests normal, my sweat is sweet enough to attract them.

@Avidkeo - your daughter is adorable and a 5k (or 4.4k) is a really long way for her to run. So glad you stuck with her. Like @quilteryoyo said, one of these days she will be wondering why you are so slow! 🤣
@quilteryoyo - I agree that 39 yo has no clue. I would love to hear his thoughts when he is 50! or 60!
@rheddmobile the lemur is so cute! I once had a wooly monkey wrap his tail around my neck and wouldn't let go, all the while pulling my hair! I was working at the baby zoo and he was a very cute but mean monkey!
I went out for my new normal 'long' run of 6 miles and ended up with over 7. It was pretty perfect running weather, partly cloudy and in the mid 50's. Needed to stop at the bathroom twice but that seems to be part of my new normal too more often than not these days. I did 'rescue' a fuzzy caterpillar (maybe a fuzzy bear?) off the paved trail where it would likely have been run over by a bike or a runner.

So I was disappointed to miss 'running the year' by a lousy 30km but buoyed by the fact I should hit 2000km. However, injury has made this tricky and today I was all disconsolate as, according to Strava, I'd have to run 32km over the next two days to hit the mark. However, I was mucking about on the website and discovered the place I'd been reading my annual total from was tracking the past 365 days not 2019. As I was nursing a badly torn calf in December last year I think I ran about 30km for the whole month. A different page in Strava gave me my 2019 kilometres - 1994.8 to be exact. So a gentle 5.2km either tomorrow or Tuesday will have me at 2000! (Or I could stretch to 12.1km each day... Hmm, it's tempting!)10

@Tramboman Kudos to you for taking with you and keeping one of the many good habits you learn in the military instead of the not so good. Two habits my husband had when he was in the army that I wish he would have kept: 1) Organizing clean, wrinkle free clothing like he did then (now he doesn't even fold them and irons the day of). 2) Running! The other day I mentioned that I'd love to run with him again and when I told him he could do it, he just looked at me with a look that could kill and said, "Sure, there's lots of stuff I could do if I wanted to." Alrighty then...
@polskagirl01 If beer drinking is a sport, well... I think he's just lucky. He doesn't even workout and he's a smoker too. I am not even kidding. I hope your work conference goes smoothly and you can squeeze some good runs in.
@Camaramandy648 Definitely a mental barrier, I think mine would be the opposite; a treadmill would be last resort and I probably wouldn't give all, but getting out in the open air is amazing and freeing.
@rheddmobile Thank you for concern over the scratches. I definitely have ugly road rash but glad no bruises or soreness. Those pictures are so adorable, cute you and lemur too...!!! And way to power through the run especially with muscle soreness and fatigue.
I hope everyone gets well and heals before we ring in this new year, although, I hope to be sleeping in my bed at the stroke of midnight because I really must be that boring. Every year bed early, I cannot stand new year festivities and idiots around here shooting off firecrackers waking me up at midnight. I'll celebrate when I wake up in the morning.
To everyone hitting their goals this month or even still trying to get there, nice job and keep striving...we still have 3 days left...

Just what I was going to say - I've yet to find one that doesn't get soaked when I'm sweating (aka running). My best fitting bras are the store brand bras from Academy Sports.1 -

Started training for Peyton’s Wild n Wacky 50K relay yesterday. I’m on a 2-person relay team. It’s held on a trail in Charleston, SC and what make it wacky is that you run a 5K every hour on the hour for 10 hours. You have to be finished with your 5K within the hour and you can’t start the next 5K segment until the hour mark has passed. I’ve done it before as a solo participant so splitting the mileage with my teammate should be manageable. The challenge will be not to eat too much or get stiff when my teammate is running her segments and I’m hanging out at camp. Yesterday we ran 5 miles in town on the sidewalk with some other friends. Then we took about a 20 minute break and drove up to Bays Mountain and ran on the trails for another 5 miles. The park at Bays Mountain doesn’t open until 8:30 am and we wanted to get an earlier start so that’s why we started on the sidewalk plus it was good training to take a break between the runs.
My friend and I also met our 2019 miles in 2019 challenge yesterday. I was worried that we would not make it this year because she was out of running for a couple of months when she broke her shoulder.
So close to my monthly goal!6 -

I am slow. I'd probably hold him back, but I don't know. The one time we did run, he quit on me. If that happens, I'll keep going without him. I can run 12 miles or more (steady and never stop, only slow down for a drink) and still only at best get between 11-12.5 minute miles. I have no running competition in me. I just want to finish in under the 16 minute mile time that we're allotted. My absolute biggest goal is just building up my endurance, no stopping for anything and I don't want to walk a step (which I don't do anyway) and hopefully, maintain an entire 26.2 at 12 minute miles. If I can do that, I'll do backhand springs across the finish line. I admire racers, I truly do. I'm not one, just a runner. I love running and I get the high and it keeps me in shape, but I started doing it as a stress reliever. Working with kids that have given me black eyes, scratches, bruises, punches, a chipped tooth put me on a quiet trail; it was the only good thing to come out of that mess.4 -

Thank you! Didn’t think I could make it, but with the holiday time off, I’ve been able to run a bit more!
Today is rest day after yesterday’s long run...although it really is a great day temp wise to run...but I must listen to the legs!3 -

Sounds like a wise plan. Stick with it regardless of him and you should be good.3 -
BOOM! 31.05 miles in seven days! I got out this morning and managed a 12:17 pace and did 1.85 miles. Still didn’t do the 5k distance nonstop but I know I can and I am pretty sore from yesterday. I got going pretty well and had planned to but a lady had her pit off the leash so I stopped to walk around them. I was so annoyed by this! Pits are great dogs if they are trained, but I don’t know this lady or her dog....
So after that i did ten seconds of moderate speed, ten seconds easy, ten seconds moderate, ten seconds easy, until i got back home. Good workout and still got home in time to make breakfast, shower again, get ready and go to church.
Great day today, hoping to go eat Mexican food after tear down at the church at 2.
My murino buff came and I can’t stop laughing when i look in the mirror with it on. I mean BELLY LAUGHING. I think it’ll work quite well and maybe the cold won’t hurt my lungs so bad anymore! Yay no more suffocating!

Working with kids that have given me black eyes, scratches, bruises, punches, a chipped tooth put me on a quiet trail; it was the only good thing to come out of that mess.
@LoveyChar TWELVE MILES NONSTOP! Good NIGHT! You’re amazing!
I so want to be able to say “I can run twelve miles without stopping.” I am going to keep working at it until I can. It’s all learning and progression and SOMEDAY I WILL GET THERE!
Anyway, you’re an inspiration2 -

Very nice job on the PR, Woot Woot! Dogs off leashes is one of my peeves, especially if I have my dog out walking with me (she is always leashed). She doesn't get along well with other dogs and your dog better not approach my dog. Problem is I don't have a big dog and she'll probably get hurt if she initiates an attack. Secondly, if your dog is smaller...
Bottom line: It's the law, so leash your dog! Got it?! Nothing cute about your dog being off a leash. Go to the dog park if that's what you want.3 -
@Teresa502 - That race sounds like fun if you do it as part of a team. I can't imagine doing it on my own! It sounds like something @7lenny7 would do though 😁
Moved Monday's run to today and probably should have just not run. Mile 2 felt pretty great but the rest, not so much. Tummy cramps hit in mile 3 taking my breath away and I had to stop. Walking didn't seem to help but after just stopping for a minute I could continue on so I did this the rest of the way home, stopping when I needed to. Really hope I am not getting sick. Dh has a scratchy throat and is coughing 🤢
I am getting close to my stretch goal and should be able to make it plus a little bit more.

Thank you, but I'm not. You're really sweet to say that. I just get stronger. These last two months I have fallen short of hitting my goals but I just keep striving like everyone else here is. I already hit my goal for this month! And I'll do more... I'm progressing and I want it more than I did before. And I have no doubt you'll get to whatever goal you want to reach...0 -
Well no run these last two days, so this apparently sums it up for me:
(includes walking and hiking)7 -

Wow, wow wow, that's over 200 miles per month! Congratulations on a great accomplishment!0 -
@shanaber I hope you aren't getting sick. Way to stick it out and run when you could.
It was t-shirt and shorts weather today: 72°F. Crazy for the end of December.
My tummy has been bothering me the last couple of days. I felt it was prudent to not get too far from home, so I did my longish run up and down a portion of my driveway today. It was a pretty boring 4 miles (13+ laps), but hard ones. My driveway is very hilly...Garmin says I had an elevation gain of 1,148 feet! I did go very, very slowly in order to get it done - 13:25 min/mile. Oh well, it's the distance and time on my feet that count. Right? With warm up and cool down walks, I traveled a total of 4.6 miles.
@Tramboman I realized at church this morning that the First Day of Christmas was Christmas Day and I had started my 12 Days of Christmas on Dec 26th. So, the purist in me had to redo my song in order to get on the correct day. I did try to make it as accurate as possible.
On the Fifth Day of Christmas,
My workout let me see,
Five hills to run
Four falling leaves
Three black cows
Two tractor tracks
And a sweet bouncing boxer puppy.
