Not a super long run, but at least a little more than my usual 3 miles today. The morning was very nice and I was glad to get it in before it turned rainy this afternoon. I also went rock climbing for a couple of hours. But didn't make it out for a hike with the dog because of the rain. I can't say I'm disappointed about that, but I'm sure Stella will remind me of how badly she's neglected for this oversight.

I'm really behind on this thread and I feel like I'm coming down with a cold, so I'm just going to update my run and then go back and try to catch up with everyone. I ran 8 miles this morning. It was a tough run. I was planning a cutback week so I was really only planning to go about 8 miles so that was good. At least I felt like I accomplised my goal. But I was so tired afterward. Lately I've had really good runs, but today was a bit of a struggle to finish. I am glad I got out there and got it done. I should have one more run for the year on Tuesday, but I have already met my goal for the month so I am going to play it by ear and see how I feel on Tuesday.
2019 races:
2/2/19: Catch the Groundhog Half Marathon - PR 2:15:17
5/18/19: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon - Cancelled due to weather
10/5/19: Old Rip 5K - PR 27:27, 1st AG
11/9/19: Wags and Whiskers 5K -2nd AG, 4th Woman, 5K PR - 26:36
2020 races:
5/16/20: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon3 -
@kgirlhart I hope you feel better! There's a lot of stuff going around. It's good that you met your goal already, so you don't feel pressured to get out if you aren't feeling well.1

The back of my right knee started to hurt during my long run on Saturday. Yesterday it felt fine walking about the house and doing the groceries, but when I walked to the inlaws' for lunch and then home again it hurt for the first 5 minutes or so until it warmed up, then just felt sore. So (as much as I hate this) I'm skipping my run today, I'll see if the pool's open later and swim instead, see if that loosens the muscles up. The sensible part of my brain is sternly telling me missing a run or two now won't matter whereas running on it in the hopes it will just go away could sideline me again. But damn it's hard!
My goal for the month was 130km with a stretch goal of 140. I'm currently at 139.7km. So of course the little voice in my head is going "swim today, run tomorrow, if it still hurts you can just do those 300 metres then quit"7 -
1229-17.8k, 1230-8.5k total-114.2k goal-120k
So the plan wanted 26km over the weekend. The AQ only cleared out by Sunday afternoon, and it took me until 7pm to head out. Ran out of time because the park closes at 9pm, and I really wasn't feeling the run. So I cut it short and went out for another 8km this morning. Temps had dropped by 10 degrees overnight and it was super windy. And my buff was with the girlfriend a timezone away. So I toughed it out, all numb face and freezing ears, until the turnaround point, and it was much easier with the wind at my back thereafter. Luckily, -10°C (about 14°F) is about as cold as it gets in Beijing.
5.8km left to reach the goal. No more training runs scheduled until Wednesday. But it would be nice to actually reach that goal for a change.
Hope everyone feels better soon @eleanorhawkins @kgirlhart @shanaber and anyone else needing a hug these days!rheddmobile wrote: »@Camaramandy648 if there’s a high impact bra which doesn’t get sopping wet on a hard, sweaty long run, I haven’t found it yet. I like the Brooks Juno but it is usually soaking and feels awful by the end of a run. I feel like even with tech fabrics, wearing a shirt over it is going to prevent sweat from evaporating.
Just what I was going to say - I've yet to find one that doesn't get soaked when I'm sweating (aka running). My best fitting bras are the store brand bras from Academy Sports.
I'm using a Shock Absorber Active Shaped Support Bra. I think it does pretty well in the not feeling sopping wet field, or maybe I just don't sweat so much in winter...
Oh and I got these yesterday.
Shoe pics with a cameo from my cat:
On sale yesterday, so I couldn't resist. Model Nike Zoom Vomero 14. They are pretty snappy, and seem to be good at keeping the undersides of my feet from getting sore. 18km last night and hardly felt a thing. They also seem to be pretty good travel shoes, since they look pretty low-key and go pretty well with clothes.4 -
@noblsheep - I have shoe envy! I have a pair of the Nike Vomeros and I really like them but they getting pretty worn down. I need to get another pair – those look snazzy!
@eleanorhawkins – hope the knee pain goes away quickly.
@quilteryoyo – the weather on both Saturday and Sunday were crazy warm days. After church yesterday I got out on my bike and rode over 17 miles. I didn’t think I would get another ride in until Spring. Good job on those @AlphaHowls crazy laps!
@kgirlhart and @shanaber – hope you both stay healthy. Rest, rest, rest!
Congratulations @hamsterwheel6 on your 2019 mileage (kilometerage?)!!
@LoveyChar – The county in which I live doesn’t have a leash law. In the state of Virginia it’s up to each county and mine hasn’t adopted one.

I can’t remember exactly what month I started back at this, though Im thinking September? I’m wondering if there is a better running shoe for stability that I can use on roads AND trails, which is better than the Salomon xr’s? I love love love them but of course you know, everyone is advertising their new and improved shoes at the dawn of a new year so I can’t help but wonder if it might be worth looking around?
I’m not sure it’s TIME to replace my shoes yet- they don’t wobble, the sole on the bottom has maintained its shape, they seem fine- just dirty from trails
But i DO love shoes so maybe if it’s practical I could buy another pair3 -

Here is the wisdom of the thread:
Running people will tell you that shoes wear out ever 300-500 miles pending on the brand. For example, my Saucony Ride 10s were rated at 300 miles. This means I should have replaced them at 300 miles. Also, shoes over a year old regardless of miles are degraded and not getting any younger.
Smart people will tell you should change your shoes BEFORE they wear out so that you reduce the chance of injury.
Addicts will tell you if the name of the day ends in Y it is time to buy new shoes.
Personally I would suggest you get a dedicated trail shoe with aggressive tread, and then a good street shoe. That trail shoe will double as snow shoe when the storms come.
All that said, is it time to replace your current shoe? Check the mileage and condition. If it has more miles than it is supposed to than the wisdom of the thread would be to replace it.
Regardless of mileage, if it is causing any pain at all, replace it.7 -

Been a bit lazy last week but off out for a run now. The Christmas Day Parkrun was packed, lots of people dressed like elves etc which was a bit surreal. First prize for costume had to go to the guy in a hat shaped like a cooked turkey, complete with little paper hats on the drumsticks 🍗

It was t-shirt and shorts weather today: 72°F. Crazy for the end of December.
My tummy has been bothering me the last couple of days. I felt it was prudent to not get too far from home, so I did my longish run up and down a portion of my driveway today. It was a pretty boring 4 miles (13+ laps), but hard ones. My driveway is very hilly...Garmin says I had an elevation gain of 1,148 feet! I did go very, very slowly in order to get it done - 13:25 min/mile. Oh well, it's the distance and time on my feet that count. Right? With warm up and cool down walks, I traveled a total of 4.6 miles.
@Tramboman I realized at church this morning that the First Day of Christmas was Christmas Day and I had started my 12 Days of Christmas on Dec 26th. So, the purist in me had to redo my song in order to get on the correct day. I did try to make it as accurate as possible.
On the Fifth Day of Christmas,
My workout let me see,
Five hills to run
Four falling leaves
Three black cows
Two tractor tracks
And a sweet bouncing boxer puppy.
Who's counting??????

Gooooaaaaallllll! I posted here on Dec 20 that there was almost no chance I would make my conservatively set goal of 90 for the month, but things turned around a bit and here we are.
This morning I went to run group again to take advantage of being on break. I almost bailed because I woke up to pouring rain and cold rain is my least favorite way to start the day. We got really lucky though and it stopped before the workout and held off until we were done with only a few sprinkles. The workout was two 10-minute tempo intervals with 3 min rest between, and then 4-8 sprints. I was not mentally prepared for long intervals so I did a bit of grumbling, then resigned myself and got down to business. This group meets near an almost abandoned shopping mall so we run this parking lot loop which is almost perfectly a 5-minute loop for me, so mentally it was helpful to me to just focus on completing the loop twice and the interval was done. Strava suggests that I had my best estimated 1-mile effort so I'll take that.
I will add on something tomorrow just to finish out the month/year with a 14-day streak. I will update the totals and check in with how everyone else finished up as well.
Happy last days of the year to everyone! Finish strong!

Morning all. Last day of December here! I'll be going out for a short run, then doing a weights session.
My best friend has come to town to visit so will be catching up with her, yay!
Had to share this with you. Yesterday my garmin training plan called for hill repeats. I hate hills, let alone repeating them. Well when I started I pressed the wrong button (atart/stop, not the lap button), and got myself all messed up. I lost mojo and just decided not to bother after 2 laps (1 according to Garmin).
I got this lovely message:

I have the worst possible legs in terms of stability - I literally have no stabilizing ligament in one knee, my other knee is valgus due to traumatic injury, and my ankles are shot. And I run trails in the Salomon speedcross, and love them. But you can’t run roads in them, it feels like running on cleats. You’re not going to find many dedicated stability shoes for trails, that’s not really a thing because it would snap your ankles. A good set of road shoes and a good set of trail shoes are a good idea. If your trails are mostly dry and even you can run them in road shoes, depending on the shoe.
Never buy the newly advertised shoe at the beginning of the year unless you are made of money. January is the time to pick up last year’s hot model at half off. If you love the shoes you have now pick up another pair and rotate them!

Hooray to the 2019k people! @Scott6255 @PastorVincent and I know I saw a third person, who was it? Anyone else?
@polskagirl01 I am pretty sure hit 2019k, but I was not one or part of that whole challenge group.
I did, however, hit 2019 miles, so that might be what you are thinking of. I am sure @AlphaHowls blew past 2019 miles too. I suspect a few others did too, but not sure who. Maybe @7lenny7 ?
No, unfortunately I didn't hit 2019 miles. Not even 2019K. I had a goal of 1500 miles for 2019 but that was before I blew up my foot. Then I pushed too hard running 3 ultras in 3 weeks between mid October and early November and had to take a break to let my body recover after that (hence my lack of participation here since then). I think I tore a hip flexor muscle. The weekend after my last ultra my youngest son and I went pheasant hunting for 3 days and I had a hard time even raising my leg to get into my truck.
Between recovery, two fantastic pheasant hunting trips with the boys, and being busy I'm just now hoping to get back to regular running. I'll likely finish with just over 1140 miles for the year.11 -
@Teresa502 - That race sounds like fun if you do it as part of a team. I can't imagine doing it on my own! It sounds like something @7lenny7 would do though 😁
Absolutely!

This^
But also everything else said. I’ve replaced shoes twice since I started running. First time due to knee pain. Within a week the pain was resolved. Second due to hip pain. I rested a week first before replacing shoes. A week later no more hip pain and feeling stronger.
I am in agreement that if you frequent both trails and road that you’ll want separate shoes for these.2 -
@7lenny7 oh no! How is your hip feeling now? It feels like recovering from a pulled muscle takes forever. I’m just now feeling like I might be ready to run again with this darned hamstring I pulled early November2
-
@noblsheep - love the shoes and cat butt cameo! 😁
@Tramboman and @quilteryoyo - I am loving your 12 Runs of Christmas!! I am just not that creative!
@Camaramandy648 - I don't do trails or use stability shoes but I agree with @PastorVincent on shoe mileage. Depending on the runner and the shoes some of us may get more or less miles from a pair. I just retired 2 pairs of Altra Escalantes that were at or under 300 miles because they made my knee hurt more when I ran. These were my go to shoes for long runs/races. I have had other 0 drop, more minimal shoes that I have run close to 700 miles in without issue before retiring them. I do typically have between 2 and 4 pairs in rotation. Also like @rheddmobile I never buy the brand new shoes as soon as they are released because of cost sure but also because the manufacturers make changes to them and I want to see the reviews. Let other people try them out and find the issues.
@7lenny7 - so glad to see you back! I saw your run on Strava and figured you had just been too busy hunting and with the holidays to run. I am sorry about the injury and hope it is feeling better so you can get out there more!5 -
I just checked my total km for the year, 894.0...
I was only planning 3k but I have to do 6 now don't I

I woke up today to a pleasant surprise! This year during the lead up to the West Cancer Center 5k, which is my husband’s and my “runniversary” race as well as being a cause we support because he was a patient there, we noticed that a photo of us running the race in 2018 was being used in all the promotional materials - mailers, news release in local paper, even a stand-up at the packet pickup! I couldn’t find an online version of it that wasn’t low res, so I wrote the media director and asked if I could get a full resolution copy, and today she got back to me!
Most photos of me running look pretty terrible, and when I look okay my husband usually doesn’t, or one of us is blurry or cropped out, so it’s nice to have a good photo of us both! And at our favorite race on our home turf! This was mid-day in the middle of September and the temperature was about 100, thus the abundant sweat.
A little bonus - long term readers may recall my arch-nemesis “Stroller Lady”, who taught me a lesson in humility at my first race by beating the pants off me while pushing a stroller, then proceeded to whup me repeatedly at many local races. She’s visible in the background here. I feel obliged to point out that she’s running under a double handicap, not only is she pushing a one-year old but she’s carrying a second baby in her tum. But I did run faster than she did, on this one single occasion!10 -
@7lenny7 I was missing you! Glad you’re back, sorry to hear the reason you were gone. You and ultras, man, you tore up your foot the same time last year.2
-
Whew hot out there! Sorry to disappoint, went with 6 because its supposed to be a short day with a longer run tomorrow. Trying to avoid an injury haha
Whew!
Woo hoo that's 900km for 2019! I'm pretty happy with that.
Definitely going to aim for 1000 for 2020. Given I had 3 months in the middle of the year where I only managed 20k each month it should be achievable10 -
@emmamcgarity @shanaber and @rheddmobile
This recovery was more precautionary than it was forced. In the second ultra in South Dakota (50K) I started feeling what I thought was hip joint pain about halfway through the race. It was tolerable and after a point, it never got worse, so I kept going.
The following weekend at the 8 hour race it flared up again but again, it wasn't too bad until after 30 miles. That's when I should have stopped but kept going another 8 miles because the clock was still ticking. At this point I still thought it was joint paint.
During our first hunting trip the following weekend it was odd. Walking fields didn't bother it, but trying to lift my right leg up into my truck caused as sharp pain. If I got momentum by first swinging my leg back and then swinging it forward and up, I could get in. That's when I decided it was likely my hip flexor. All this is self diagnosed so I'm not sure.
I waited a week to run trail again and everything felt great until mile 6 when a dull hip pain came back, as well as pain in my lower calf muscles. This was followed up by other runs 3 to 7 days apart, with a 10 mile trail race 5 weeks after my last ultra. While that race felt pretty good, I didn't run for another 2.5 weeks out of precaution and because life was getting busy. Last week my daughter and I ran twice, 5 miles each time, with no pain at all so I'm hopeful I'm past it all.
So, I'm ramping my miles back up, cautiously, and have a road HM January 15th and a trail 50K February 22nd. I had intended on going for a HM PR but since I don't feel I can trail properly for a PR, I'll just take the finish time I get and be happy.
The 50K in February is the Psycho Wyco in Kansas City. In both 2018 and 2019 I wanted to do the 50K but was forced to go with 20M because I was coming off injury. God willing, I'll get my first Kansas 50K this time!
I had been considering trying my first 100M on March 28th in Kansas on a gravel rail-trail, but that is in doubt and will be a last minute decision.9 -
On an interesting note, strava and garmin differ by only 5k. Strava says I ran 905k, garmin says 900.
I assume that's due to small differences with how they interpret the GPS data. I'm going with Garmin because that's my primary indicator. But if the difference only adds up to 5k over a year, so 0.5% different, that's pretty cool!4
