Great to have you back, @PastorVincent .1

Finally reached my goal of running 3 miles. I'm going to try to do that for a bit then it's time to work on speed.

@autumnblade75 - doesn't the cotton gear get sweat soaked and chafe? I pretty much won't run in anything cotton for that reason. I had some cotton UA singlets but they soaked up the sweat and got heavy and then chafed so bad under my arms.0

Single digit temps out there today, possibly below zero with windchill. It certainly felt like it. I decided to cut short the long run because of my back, and ended up walking in the middle for about a mile. But then I was freezing and didn't want to be out there forever so I started running again to finish up. Almost 5 miles total, but 3.8 running.
I think I'm finally warmed up several hours later. It's starting to snow and we are supposed to get a few inches with some sleet mixed in, so it's a good day to rest up and stay in under the covers.5 -
Update: the lake ride wasn't as cold as I expected, mostly because it wasn't windy today. My kids are getting faster and stronger, so I wasn't constantly riding my brakes and it actually felt like an easy workout. The days of me running beside them riding their bikes appear to be over, though :_)
Welcome back @PastorVincent and I hope you recover quickly!6 -
@autumnblade75 - doesn't the cotton gear get sweat soaked and chafe? I pretty much won't run in anything cotton for that reason. I had some cotton UA singlets but they soaked up the sweat and got heavy and then chafed so bad under my arms.
I keep hearing people say that, but the cotton stuff gets SOAKED but since it's form-fitted, it clings in place and as long as it's cut in a way that suits my body (I suppose there's some individuality - I have had unsuccessful gear) it's all good. The tech fabrics tend to get saggy and shift around on me, and they chafe. The babydoll cut tech shirts they give out at races are the WORST for chafing my arms at the end of the short sleeves. I select the men's shirts instead, for the longer short sleeves - but I actually prefer a cotton t-shirt.5 -
I needed to get in 3 miles today but a snow/rain combination has been coming down all morning and it was to slippery. It's supposed to last until 3PM so I will try to get it in later after J's hockey game. I just hate running unless it's first thing in the morning.3

Yay glad to see you back @PastorVincent even if it sounds like you are coughing up a lung.
The leggings I wear are UA heat gear, and I wear them all year round. I just find them comfortable and love the feel of the fabric, so soft. I actually wear the "girls" size M because they fit the best. I can't stand any sagging or loose fit anywhere. I think they are technically a little small (thank god for stretch) but since the large sags in annoying places, medium it is.
And I think im the only woman alive who can't stand high waisted leggings. I want hip riders, anything that's long enough to hit my navel I start feeling really uncomfortable while running. No idea why. And actually, I couldn't wear maternity pants that went over the bump either, I felt so restricted, like I couldnt breath properly. Same feeling when I'm on a run. So this latest fashion for high waisted leggings is so frustrating!
I also have the Nike drifit socks, 1 pair of Balega and a couple of ancient (I'm guessing 9 years old?) hole proof running socks that still have no holes! The Balega are my favourites, the Nike are great, don't move or anything, and the hole proof are like old friends, literally moulded to my feet now.
Tops, I have some cheap Kmart tanks that are great I have a Puma and Nike tank that are also great, but not more superior to the Kmart ones. So the Kmart wins because $3 for something I bought 2 years ago and is still going strong will always win, but the Nike and Puma were things I won in a competition last year and love as well. I understand the difference, the brand names are slightly more comfortable and definitely keep my dryer but not enough to make me choose those over the others.3 -
@Camaramandy648 I’m so sorry about your dog. And the timing is just adding insult to injury.
I ran 10k yesterday on the Greenline. It was not a good run. I’m not sure what’s wrong with me but my blood sugar and heart rate are elevated which is usually a sign that I’m coming down with something. I just felt like my leg muscles were going to give out on me. Other than feeling like poo it was a nice run. The weather was one of those days which looks depressingly miserable but then when you go to run in it, it’s not actually bad at all - in the 40s and spitting rain. It must have been an excellent day for hawks, because we saw so many of them that I lost count, including one huge red tail who swooped down and sat on a tree watching us as we ran by.
Afterwards we stopped at our gyro place and I was reminded that there are people in the world who have way worse problems than I do. We are friends with the owner, who has been here for decades but is originally from Syria, and since we hadn’t been in for a while we asked how he had been. His family’s home town is being shelled and his elderly father at the same time fell and broke his hip, ended up unable to reach and unlock the door of his house. The police were willing to come and break down the door but because of the goings on, there were no emergency services available. So his sister had to find someone to help her break in and get him to a hospital. At the hospital they told him they could do the surgery but were all out of surgical supplies, so his father would have to supply anesthesia and everything else to do the surgery himself before they could help him. Meanwhile, the ability to transfer money and even regular phone communications were cut off sporadically. Amazingly enough through a family friend who is a doctor they got the supplies and did the surgery and his father seems to be recovering well. But the stress of worrying about his father and being unable to help gave my friend shingles, and of course you can’t work in a kitchen with shingles, so he had shutter his place part time since there’s only him and one other cook. Anyway his problems make all of mine feel small! It’s easy for me in my comfortable life not to think about - in war zones, ordinary people are trying to live their ordinary lives, and something like an elderly parent with a broken hip, which would be already be a big crisis to any one of us becomes an impossible disaster when it’s in the middle of a war zone.10 -
Eight miles today.
Not 16.
But 8 is something. I think i need to make the cut back weeks be the weeks when the kids are with their dad the least amount of time. Running sixteen miles is too tall an order if I’m not going to make myself get up ealier. There’s too much to squeeze into an extremely short amount of time.
I rolled my ankle the first mile in. I had crazy shin splints. My body felt like lead.
I took off my running pack to see how that felt and voila! Loads better but i was already too far out to take it back to the car, so i need to figure out how to hydrate properly without it. It makes me feel so weighted down.
Now, to clean, order my son’s birthday cake, prep for fiancés birthday dinner tomorrow, and go get my kids!6 -

Morning all.
3.2 k this morning. Nothing exciting or spectacular. I had 3 call outs last night, including one at 7am when I was having a great dream and really could have used an extra hrs sleep. I think i got 5hrs broken sleep?
So the rest of today will be chilling at home, having an afternoon nap, husband is taking the kids out for the afternoon to visit a friend who has kids the same age.
Tomorrow (assuming I'm safe to drive) I'm taking the kids to visit my mum. Who has just been officially diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Her blood sugars increased 10 points in 6 months. Sadly she's in complete denial about the situation, refusing to take any medication. She does know what she has to do (eat less and move more). She asked about c25k, and I encouraged her more towards actually getting walking first. I didn't want her starting something that ambitious when she hasn't actually walked further than about 500m in 20 odd years and gets out of breath doing that.
So I'm going to be doing the cooking and meal prep (she likes this, she basically gets a week off and gets to try new things) and hopefully encourage her to look at her portion sizes (it's not so much what she eats but how much), and try getting her walking. She's already said she wants to get new walking shoes.
It's so hard when someone so close just can't see the reality and actually Denys they have a problem.
And she works in healthcare!
Any advice appreciated, otherwise thanks for reading my vent. At least now I have extra motivation to stay on track at her place, something I'm traditionally not very good at.6 -
@rheddmobile - That is really awful what your friend's father went through in Syria. I am glad he was able to get the supplies to have the surgery on his hip. Unfortunately there are so many situations like that where treatment is needed and the doctors or supplies just aren't there. That is over and beyond the injuries from the bombings themselves. I think we all forget that so much is happening in other parts of the world that drastically affect people's everyday lives.
@Avidkeo - I am so sorry about your mom but it is a little encouraging that she is willing to consider being more active. Maybe your kids can get her going for walks with them? Also I would encourage her to fins. friend she can walk with when you aren't there. Someone to help nudge her and keep her going. It's always more fun when you have someone to commiserate with. I have the same denial issue with my dh. He tells people he is borderline diabetic but has to test his blood daily and takes metformin. Pretty sure it isn't borderline if it is being controlled with medication.
My plan for today was to get in a good 10-12 miles. Didn't happen. Got in just over 6. My legs hurt. Not anywhere specific but just all over. Then the ball of my foot started hurting and I didn't want to take a chance at aggravating the stress fracture all over again. I am hoping this goes away this next week (tomorrow is a rest day) otherwise I have no idea if I will be able to finish my HM on the 2nd.

@rheddmobile oh hugs you are right, we really have no idea what it's like elsewhere. I feel so safe down here in my little country so far away from everything. It's a good reminder of what actually goes on.
@shanaber thank you for your reply, I like the suggestion of a friend, she does have one who is fairly active, maybe I can encourage her to help out? Will see.
My biggest aim will be to open her eyes to portions. That will be a huge thing for her, and a really simple way of starting off. I hope your husband wakes up too. Its so hard watching the ones we love deny like that.2 -
@rheddmobile Glad your friend's dad was able to get the supplies he needed and is doing okay. I can't imagine how hard it is to try to carry on with everyday life in a war zone. Those of us who aren't are more blessed than we realize.
@Avidkeo Hope things go well with you mum. It is hard to make lifestyle changes, especially when you aren't really convinced you need to. Hopefully the friend will walk with her and she'll see that she feels better and wants to do more...and portion control. That's a hard one. Hope you can help her with that too. My dad was told last year that he has diabetes, but doesn't have to take medicine. He will NOT tell people he has it or he will say he's borderline. It really isn't too bad. We're trying to control it by watching what he eats, but that's hard because he loves sweets and carbs. However, he will be 88 in a couple of weeks, so we aren't going to tell him he can't have the things he loves. We just want him to cut back on the amount.4 -

I hear you about the high waisted clothing - we shopping for shorts yesterday, every single pair was high waisted. Not only do I not like the look, but I have no waist, so find them incredibly uncomfortable. If I try something that fits my waist, it's super oversized on my hips and bottom. Bring back hipster pants/jeans/shorts/trousers!!1 -
@Camaramandy648 I’m sorry about all of the tough stuff with which you are dealing. *hugs*
@eleanorhawkins Glad you are feeling better. My husband worries I am going to die running too anytime he hears about something happening to someone in the act of exercising.
I got in 4.5 today. I never know with being on call how much I will be able to do. I plan to try to get in 6 tomorrow, even if I have to break it up to fit around everything else.

@marisap2010 thank you!
And thank you to everyone else who has been so kind to me directly. I’ve had a hard time keeping
up.
Anybody have any ideas about the legs burning while running?
I thought I needed new shoes so i replaces them but alas .... ☹️
When i got home I felt bad for Buzz so I took him out. We went for a little while and he eventually started to get into rhythm with me. I think I should get him a harness - I don’t like the leash pulling his collar against his throat. He did pretty well, marked his spot a bunch, and I ended the day with about ten miles. Still not sixteen, but I have less to do next Saturday so here’s to the 16 miles at that point!5 -
Haven't been participating (tho I lurk a lot), but I wanted to drop in and give a plug to the Revel Kulia 1/2 marathon race. This starts at 1700 foot elevation above Waikoloa Village on Big Island, and ends at sea level at Waikoloa Resorts. The marathon starts another 13 miles up the mountain (Mauna Kea)....for a total (FAST) downhill course. It is a Boston Qualifying course.
This was really well organized: busses took us from the finish area (with free parking) up to the start. There were aid stations every 2 miles with water/gatorade/gels and portajohns. Everything was marked well and monitors were on the course to guide the way.
At the finish line there was the usual iced water, chocolate milk, fruit, pizza....and ice COLD FACE CLOTHS! (Never seen such a thing, but since this run ended in a lava desert....it was a fabulous idea.
In short, if you're looking for a destination run, and hoping to BQ, this may be it.
I went. I moved. I finished.

0119-5k, total-74.8k goal-140k
It's been a week since my last run. This morning I told myself I was going to do a run no matter what, so despite being short on time I went out and ran a 5km build-up - 2km MP, 1km HMP, and then speeding up to around 5km pace before cooldown.
Well it went great. The Nikes are catching me in the front of my ankles, but besides that they are awesome. I still don't know if my newfound speed is me or the shoes, but I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts.I went. I moved. I finished.
@Avidkeo That sounds like a difficult situation. Good luck.6 -
@ContraryMaryMary and @Avidkeo I think they should have both options available. I personally like the high waisted clothing better. I have wide hips, so the hip huggers just make me feel huge. But, then again, if they fit in the waist, they are too tight in the hips. The fashion police should understand that people like different things and have options rather than forcing a fashion trend.6

January Goal: 135k
Cloudy, 20 degrees F, with a little light snow and a northwest wind. Wind was not nearly as bad as I feared it would be. Most of yesterday's slush had frozen, so the footing was pretty good. Thought about an ice beard picture, but my beard is now long enough and white enough that it's hard to tell where the beard stops and the ice starts.
